Failed installation of Avast

Trying to install the latest Avast on a MBA running 10.9.5. No sign of any problems. Machine running fine. I had installed Avast on another machine of his and it did some good, so he wanted it on his MBAir.
The problem, the installer fails at the final stage with a completely generic message that's no help.
Looking at the console log, lead me to believe a couple things:
- Perhaps it was tripping over a permission problem.
- or perhaps it wasn’t happy that Chrome was not installed.
One specific log line item says (which might be the key if someone can interpret, my Google searches haven't been able to untangle):
"CoreServicesUIAgent: Error: qtn_file_apply_to_path error: Read-only file system"
So, here are the things the DIDN'T solve the problem
1) repaired permissions
2) installed Chrome
3) repaired home permissions
4) restarted
5) turned off Gatekeeper
6) redownloaded installer
7) ran Disk Repair, which led me to booting into Recovery Mode to fix a couple directory structure mismatches.
Any ideas what else it could be tripping up this install?
I don’t have enough experience with Avast to know whether or not this is an “Avast problem”, but I certainly have more experience with installing under Mavericks to say Avast is most likely the culprit here.
I suppose I could give up on Avast and go to ClamAV, but he’s “sold” on Avast. I realize there are other virus protection solutions and I realize there's some debate on whether or not anti-virus software SHOULD be installed on a Mac. Just looking for suggestions on the installation problem itself.
Have submitted a ticket to Avast, but only a canned response so far.

Non-Apple "anti-virus" products are worthless and will prevent your Mac from working as designed. Some such products are malicious. "Avast" is not the worst of them, but it comes close.
Nothing in the world can prevent you from succumbing from "phishing" scams.
There will always be threats to your information security associated with using any Internet - connected communications tool:
You can mitigate those threats by following commonsense practices
Delegating that responsibility to software is an ineffective defense
Assuming that any product will protect you from those threats is a hazardous attitude that is likely to result in neglecting point #1 above.
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up", "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources.
Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
"Questionable sources" include but are not limited to spontaneously appearing web pages or popups, download hosting sites such as C net dot com, Softonic dot com, Soft pedia dot com, Download dot com, Mac Update dot com, or any other site whose revenue is primarily derived from junk product advertisements.
If you need to install software that isn't available from the Mac App Store, obtain it only from legitimate sources authorized by the software's developer.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iCloud, iTunes, or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose:Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Java can be disabled in System Preferences.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
The same precaution applies to Adobe Flash Player. Newly discovered Flash vulnerabilities appear almost weekly.
Beware spontaneous popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > check "Block popup windows".
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but unsolicited popups are commonly used to deceive people into installing unwanted software they would never intentionally install.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever receive a popup window indicating that your Mac is infected with some ick or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
The same goes for a spontaneously appearing dialog insisting that you upgrade your video player right this instant. Such popups are frequently associated with sites that promise to deliver "free" movies or other copyrighted content that is not normally "free".
The more insistent it is that you upgrade or install something, the more likely it is to be a scam. Close the window or tab and forget it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. Most of these attempts are pathetic and are easily recognized, but that hasn't stopped prominent public figures from recently succumbing to this age-old scam.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

anyone have experience with this problem?

Hi Bill, yes, I can do that. Created one several levels deep.
I assume you mean HS is running on Vista. It's not clear if you're
problem is in creating that directory on RDS remote host (from a HS
client running Vista) or specifically in also creating the
directory on an RDS remote host (or localhost) running Vista. I was
able to create a directory several levels deep on both a remote
machine (not running Vista) and my localhost running Vista, both
    via RDS.
I'll add, FWIW, that I'm running HomeSite+ 5.5 (not HomeSite
5.0). If you (or others) really are still on 5.0, there's at least
    a free update to HS 5.2 (
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/resourcecenter/resourcecenter.cfm?pagename=hs%5F52%5Fupdater& loc=en%5Fus&)
To update to HS 5.5, it would cost a HS 5.0 customer US$29.
    More at

That said, no release of HS specifically lists Vista as
supported (see the requirements page, which lists Win2k3 as tha
    latest OS specifically supported):

I'll point out as well that if one has Dreamweaver 8, that

  • Windows 8 64-bit, failed installations and RAID 1 resync on HP ENVY h8-1520z

I recently purchased an HP Envy h8-1520z with a single SSD and 8 GB RAM running Windows 8 Pro 64-bit.  I installed 2 Western Digital 500 GB WDC WD5000AAKX-001CA0 HDDs on SATA ports 5 & 6 and configured them as RAID 1 in the BIOS.  I have started installing apps on the RAID 1 array (E since the SSD is only 256 GB.
While installing software, some install fine, but often the installation hangs with no errors indicated and I have to kill the installer task through task manager.  I usually follow that with a system shutdown or restart and almost every time that results in a resync of the RAID array.  Sometimes the shutdown or restart is quick, and other times it takes several minutes with intermittent disk activity as indicated by the drive light.  I have sometimes given up after 10 minutes or so and powered down by holding down the power button.  I can understand a resync after the forced power down, but it seems that all it takes to cause a resync is a failed installation, and that seem to happen a lot, even with software that explicitly says it is Windows 8 compatible.  Sometimes the applications run fine even after an apparently failed installation and other times not so much.
Has anybody else seen this behavior or have any suggestions?  I’d like to get this sorted out before I load any more software.

    Hi,
Did you check each hard drive for straps? There should not be any straps installed on the hard drive. These drives do have strapping posts.
Did you use the AMD RaidExpert to create the array volume?  Did you wait until the RAID migration was complete before using the array volume?
Check the AMD RaidExpert for errors. It's possible that you have a bad hard drive(s).
Many applications want to be installed on the C drive.  Your SSD is 256GB so you should have plenty of space for most applications and the application performance will be improved.  Use the RAID 1 array to keep and store your data. The mirroring process of RAID 1 will protect it in case one hard drive fails.
You might want to consider removing all of the data etx.. from the array, use the AMD RAIDExpert to delete out the array volume.  I would then run for hard drive diagnostics.  If the hard drives are free from errors then use disk management to separately reformat each hard drive.  Now go back to the AMD RaidExpert and create your new array volume.
Be sure to review the software and bios updates for your PC.

  • Failed installation: How to rerun Adobe Application Manager updates for Photoshop CS6

    Hi.
The installation of  Adobe Extension Manager CS6 failed - while 2 others update for Photoshop CS6 did intall. I was installing Adobe Reader X .
That's why I discovered the notication from the application manager about updates for CS6 - and I just confirmed that as well.
Apparently the Reader installation blocked only the update installation of Adobe Extension Manager CS6 - saying another installation process was running ... such stuff happens sometimes.
However, it seems Adobes Application Manager update module does not track its failed installations? It does not automatically advertise that update has not been installed and notifiying me again to install it. At least not immediately ...
So how do I rerun the Adobe Application Manager update moduel to check for updates manually?

    You go Photoshop CS6 > Help > Updates ...

Hello i've been really exited to donload photoshop and so i decided to try the free version i downloaded creative cloud and went into th eapps and click on photoshop try it free i waited a few 30 mins and it stopped and told me this
installation failed installation completed through some components failed to instal correctly.
and then i was like whatttt?!?!?!?!?
so I decided to come here and ask why this is happening please answer ASAP I really need photoshop for important stuff!!!

Try restarting your computer, then try again. Awhile back, some of the apps which I think included photoshop require the microsoft runtime to be updated. That runtime requires a restart to finish installing. But since it is a piggyback program, the error code telling you do so is hidden in the log file.
If it still does not install let us know.

  • Failed installation but space available going down. How do I delete files?

Hey I bought Sims 3 a few months back when I was using OSX 10.5 and then I upgraded to Snow Leopard when it came out and now I need to reinstall the game. I have tried about 5 times and each time the install stops working (gets to copying file x of y and doesn't move past this point). Unfortunately now it's gotten to the point where I only have 2.8GB free space on my HDD. I can't find any sims or EA files on my HDD so I can't delete them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

After HD failure, managed to resurrect computer with OSX10.4.11 on a new 500GB PATA drive. Once almost everything was working (couldn't send email despite settings being same as Macbook Pro running Leopard) I decided to update to Leopard
On first attempt - the installation failed saying HD was wrong format. Using Disk utility confirmed that no permissions errors and that it was Mac OS Extended (Journaled) which I thought was correct.
Second attempt and this HD now has Yellow triangle with Exclamation mark stating that I cannot install on this HD.
I have another new 500GB PATA drive which I can slot into the computer. I was advised about partitioning to 2x250GB. What type of install ought I to do bearing in mind that I have spent many hours resurrecting the OSX 10.4.11 software with settings etc.
Another issue is that 2 of the existing HDs are no longer readable. They are detected in Disk Utility, but no longer display Volume name. When I restart computer, it gives the following dialogue box
    Disk Insertion
The disk you inserted was not readable by the computer
Then 3 buttons: Initialize, Ignore or Eject
So far I have been pressing Ignore as I do not want to wipe data. Mac Help hasn't been able to when searching for Disk Insertion or Initialize or Initialise.
Your issue is not similar and you should start a new thread since the original poster's problem is solved.
It is always best to start a new thread rather than add to an existing one with a new problem/issue. It only confuses the responses, since nobody can tell to whom they are directed.

  • Installer Logs Location for Troubleshooting Failed Installs.

I'm attempting to troubleshoot failed installations on packages built with the Mac version of AAMEE 3.0.  Where are the installer logs located that give relevant failure information?  The system log only passes along the generic "The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance." message when the install fails.  Thanks.

The detail logs can be found at PDApp.log file present in user specific temp folder. You can find this folder using %temp%\PDApp.log (if msi is run from logged-in user account) OR [BootDrive]:\windows\Temp\PDAp.log. (No user logged in)

  • PSE 10 - multiple failed installs; I give up

    Adobe staff and forum members,
I really wanted to upgrade to PSE 10 (and in fact, I felt sort of forced to because PSE 8 does not support the RAW files for my new camera) but I ended up getting so frustrated last night that I returned my downloaded copy of PSE 10 and PRE 10 (the combo pack).  I got PSE 10 to run for a day or two, then it began crashing immediately upon launching the Organizer. I did several uninstalls and reinstalls to no avail, then spent about two hours on the phone with two customer service reps yesterday, doing multiple installs/uninstalls, multiple downloads of the files, etc.  I finally gave up and did the return, but I'm writing to express my extreme displeasure with the quality of this product and the download option for getting the files.  Customer service was of little help, and the second person I dealt with was abrupt and didn't explain what he was asking me to do.  He had me opening what I thought was an online chat to discuss the problem, but it turned out that I was allowing him to take over the desktop on my computer and work on my machine.  I am extremely uncomfortable with someone half a world away taking over my machine, for both security reasons (and he was changing security settings on my machine without asking or explaining) and because it will make it harder for me to replicate what he did in the (very likely) event that I have to address the same problem in the future.  I was also irritated that he didn't clearly ask me if it would be okay with me to take over my machine; this sort of request seems like something that should be very clearly requested and explained.
After it became pretty clear that my downloads were failing multiple times, I was offered the option to order disks and handle the install that way, but of course there is an extra cost for that option, which I was trying to avoid in the first place. (And I'm not at all sure that going that route would result in a complete, trouble-free download and installation.)
Overall, I don't feel that Adobe does a very good job of readying its products for launch and testing them thoroughly in various user configurations. I'm not a techie, but I see lots and lots of frustration on the forums and in various other places regarding perceived premature launches, poor customer support, etc. I realize software has to work on an almost infinite variety of machines and configurations, but it just doesn't seem like it should be this hard to install and use a product. What's more inexcusable to me, though, is Adobe's customer service after the sale. As I said, the second rep was abrupt, didn't explain what he was doing, and didn't solve the problem. It's also difficult to deal with international-based customer service at times when there are language or accent difficulties, which are particularly challenging when you're dealing with something complicated and technical. I tried in vain to reach someone in the US sales office this morning to complain, but the telephone system does not give you an option to talk to someone without knowing a name or extension.
In short, Adobe has lost a customer and it's a shame for all concerned.  PSE has a lot of powerful and neat features that I hoped to learn more about and use, but it's just not possible at this point for this user.

26kel I apologize for your experience.  If you can please private message me with your e-mail and phone number I can review your previous interaction and provide feedback to the technician and his supervisor.

  • What a victory: failed installs due to "shared technology" errors returns endless threads via Google

I purchased PSE 10 (download) and lit up an install. It failed. I searched Google and oddly, the moment I hit the terms "photoshop elements 10 install fail" I got 40-50 results for "shared technology" failures. You guys are failure stars!
By the way, I cannot thank you enough for wasting my day like this. Back in the old days one had to visit microsoft.com to waste an entire ******** day trying to get their poorly engineered product installed, after it's failed endlessly to do as expected. Bill would be proud, if he weren't busy out there earning billions of dollars by giving away millions...which is nicer than what I have to say about you right now. Who needs time with their kids? Install PSE!!! It's a great time soak!
So, with that, I beg of you to please start sending me the usual asinine, nonworking fixes-in-a-box to get this product installed on my machine, even though we both know it won't work. Meanwhile, I have purchased downloaded, installed, and started using the Corel's latest version of PSP, which nearly FLEW into my hard drive and immediately worked right out of the box. Boy, they suck, huh? No. They don't. You do.
I've followed the hilariously funny and equally useless advice on your help forums (my favorite: " If you are using a downloaded installer, or running the installation from the hard drive, the Shared Technologies can fail because of the installation path. Copy the installation files to a folder to the root of the drive." Really? So you're saying "to install this stupid product, first you must fix our stupid mistake." Love you. Truly, I do.) and nothing has worked. I assume you will end up pointing at Microsoft and calling them bad, since every other app on my computer works without this moronic, yet remarkably popular, failure.
And even if we get this (endlessly) failed implementation to work - emphasis on IF - I will probably de-install it and demand a refund, depending on whether PSP has their product up to par, which is far more likely than Adobe having a working fix.
Now, I will say for the record that I have been harsh, and snide, and nasty. I am tired, and frustrated, and it's been four hours, and I have had enough. Having said that, deal with it. I am your customer (for the moment). Why do I need to ask you to make your product work? Isn't that the point? Is it? Helloooo?

It has occurred to me that Adobe's support people may be cowards. Then again, I am being a jerk, and it's probable they may have read my comments and said "screw this guy." I might say that. Then again, if I worked for a world-class company like Adobe I might step up and defend my product.
Then again, I might not, because they fell off the tracks some time ago and failed to stay in sync with the technologies they need to work with (read: Microsoft) to the degree they have Google reflecting:
a.) Adobe's level of failure in compatibility given the immediate and numerous responses to the simple keywords "elements fail" returning an astonishing number of responses (mine at the top lately) and...
b.) Adobe's own technical staff offering roughly a dozen differing, non-working fixes to the issue and...
c.) Adobe's studied and intentional avoidance of my emails, this thread, and hilariously worthless chat support.
It is very likely the source of the issue is an administrator profile glitch on the MS side, or perhaps an MSI issue, but good luck getting that clarified from Adobe.
    They!
    Don't!!
    Know!!!
And they don't care. All I can say about that is I am glad I only dropped sixty-odd bucks on this product rather than seven-odd hundred for CS6. Maybe I'd get support if I had, but these snotty threads would be YouTubed, Reddited, and published in the local paper.
Next: there has been a breakthrough! An amazing breakthrough!
Among the many useless and stupid bits of advice Adobe's staff throw around on the support site, there is a great recommendation to try to load the product in safe mode. Last night I booted into safe mode and tried to run the installer, which of course immediately popped a dialog box stating it couldn't run in safe mode, so there's Adobe's great advice for you. While I was laughing and taking screen shots for posterity I glanced at my desktop, and there it was: the Photoshop Elements 10 icon. What are you doing there? I double clicked, and viola! It was loaded all along! Opened right up with that blue screen with a thousand names of the dev team.
Wait. What? I thought it rolled back? It SAID it rolled back the install. No? That 5 minutes it spends “rolling back” it just pretends to roll back, deletes the icon, leaving my computer polluted with a product I already got a refund on from Amazon? Really?
Anyway I rebooted back into my normal state and lo and behold, the PSE 10 icon is still there on my desktop. It did not install from safe mode. It had been installed from the beginning, and for whatever reason booting into safe mode and rebooting back seems to fix whatever idiotic and mindless failure Adobe built into this thing which they couldn't otherwise help me fix. Plain reboots did not do this: only booting into and back out of safe mode.
Thinking I was imagining things, I got up this morning and checked. Yep. There it is on my desktop, working as if it had been there all along and I hadn't been ignored, avoided, led astray, given stupid advice, or sold a product that clearly wasn't ready for sale. PSE 10. Working. Seemingly fully functional. Glory be.
Now, since I am the one who fixed it, I was thinking Adobe should pay me. I spent about 10 hours fuming over this thing, and I bill $65 an hour as a consultant. I realize that I am not an Adobe coder or support specialist, but I fixed it and should be compensated for my time at my rate. A bonus is in order as well - call it pain and suffering. 10X$65 plus a little sweetener, let's call it a thousand bucks. What do you say, Adobe? Are you going to award my ingeniousness and brilliance? You couldn't handle it, and still can't, but I did it. Me. The bitchy, whiny one infesting your support board with angry hate. You owe me.
Yeah, I didn’t think so. Anyway, I have always liked PSE and have used past versions to great success. I think I will like PSE10 just as much, regardless the fact my view of Adobe is that much dimmer for the shamefully bad experience of late. This has been a pretty sucky couple of days, and from the boards and complaints I have found out it's the exception rather than the rule, but exceptional nonetheless.
Now I shall screenshot this thread and publish it everywhere I can find a place for it. I will call out the responses I received from Adobe (none) and the great support I received from Adobe (none) and the quality service I received from Adobe (none). Then I will do my level best to remember what the heck I was doing that made me want to buy PSE in the first place: there was a photo of...something, and I wanted to...do something. What was it? I've spent so much time in Adobe FailShop I have forgotten what I was doing here in this bottomless abyss of fail...
Ta taa, Adobe Support. Love you, really I do. True story.

  • MBP not working properly after failed installation

    Hi, here's my problem.
Yesterday when trying to install the iphoto update and java update through the app store software update (I'm running OSX 10.8.2)
it told me when trying to install, that the installation failed. ever since then, it's been running EXTREMELY slowly. It will take minutes to open up a finder window, load a webpage, open an application etc. It also won't load icons properly, for example, on the dock, the normal DOWNLOADS and DOCUMENTS stacks or whatever you want to call them, all show up as clear dotted squares. JPG Thumbnails on the desktop or in folders no longer show a preview of what the image is, instead just showing the preview application icon for each file.
I tried using the following methods to fix things
-Used Disk Utility to verify and repair permissions, also verified the drive, (no errors)
-Used Disk Warrior to graph and rebuild the main HDD with the operating system
-Used Onyx to do maintenance on temp files and other file links etc.
-Re-installed the Java Update and iPhoto updates manually from downloading them through the apple support webpage since they no longer showed up in the app store when choosing software update.
-I also re-downloaded the OSX 10.8.2 Supplemental update to see if that would resolve anything, but none of these things have helped.
It's still running extremely sluggishly and I get the beachball for minutes at a time even when just right clicking or accessing the apple menu to choose recent applications or whatever.
Can someone tell me what's wrong and how I can fix it?
Also, I'm on the 2.2Ghz Intel Core i7 17" model wit 8GB of RAM.
    Thanks

here's the most recent 50. it looks like the console's logs don't go nearly back far enough to go to the time when the trouble started.

  • Failed installation of Lightroom 5 from Creative Cloud App Manager on Windows Vista 64Bit

    Hi,
I recently subscribed to the Creative Cloud. All applications from the App Manager downloaded and installed successfully, except for Lightroom 5, with the error message below. The LR5 download seems to be successful, but after about 2/3 of the way through the installation, it fails and gives this error:
