Failure to repaint a Graphics clip when drag another window past

Hi there,
I have a JEditTextArea (a syntax highlighting Component) inside of which I have added a LineNumbering Component. This works ok in all but that my line numberer doesn't always repaint itself when its required to.
At the moment it repaints ALL of itself whenever repaint is called. In the past I have tried only repainting the area inside the Graphics.getClipBounds area, for efficiency - however, this didn't work.
The problem occurs when I have an optionPane popped up infront of part of my LineNumber'er component :leading to no linenumbers being painted. then when I click on my component - it then repaints itself
Please could someone tell me the proper way to repaint this LineNumerer so that it never has a portion of it that is unpainted.
Thanks in advance - Edd Turner.

My iMac all of the sudden started going in and out of the dashboard, then started changing all files on the desktop to 2's. It also did this when having another window open. Do I have a virus?

There are no viruses that can affect Apple OS X.
What files do you keep on the Desktop? How many?
Performance tip: Keep the Desktop clutter-free (empty, if possible)
Mac OS X's Desktop is the de facto location for downloaded files, and for many users, in-progress works that will either be organized later or deleted altogether. The desktop can also be gluttonous, however, becoming a catch-all for files that linger indefinitely.
Unfortunately - aside from the effect of disarray it creates - keeping dozens or hundreds of files on the Desktop can significantly degrade performance. Not necessarily because the system is sluggish with regard to rendering the icons on the desktop and storing them in memory persistently (which may be true in some cases), but more likely because keeping an excessive number of items on the Desktop can cause the windowserver process to generate reams of logfiles, which obviously draws resources away from other system tasks. Each of your icons on your desktop is stored as a window in the window server, not as an alias. The more you have stored, the more strain it puts on the window server. Check your desktop for unnecessary icons and clear them out.
Keeping as few items as possible on the Desktop can prove a surprisingly effective performance boon. Even creating a single folder on your Desktop and placing all current and future clutter inside, then logging out and back in can provide an immediately noticeable speed boost, particularly for the Finder.
And it is why Apple invented 'Stacks' for Leopard.
Here is Apple's take on the subject:

  • Do not duplicate the graphic style when you copy and paste a feature

I rely heavily on the use of graphic styles.  However, when I copy and paste a feature that has a graphic style assigned to it, a duplicate of the graphic style is created.  I sometimes end up with a large number of these duplicate graphic styles that I have to trash.  This does not happen with the selection tool+alt shortcut for copying.  However, I can't use this shortcut when I want to paste in front or paste in back, which is the case at least half the time.

Only advice I can offer is Option Left cursor, then right cursor, to make an exact copy in same position.
This will give you a clone as the action does form the previosu poster, but unfortunately no oslution for when you want to target layers.
If anyone else has any input on this here is how to reproduc:
New document, create a graphic style (eg: fill yellow, stroke none) and save
    Close the document
    Open the document
copy and paste the element with the graphic style, and with every paste multiplies faster than a tribble on Star Trek
I played with changing the clipboard options, no luck. Exists on CS4 Mac, CS5 Mac & PC, might go back as far as graphic styles do.

  • The music stops when clicking another window! How do you fix in Audition CS6?

The music stops recording when I click into another window! How do you fix in Audition CS6?

For all the information about this, you need to read this FAQ. It tells you what to do (easy - just remove the check from Release ASIO Driver in Background), but also what the implications are.

  • Annoying window behaviour when dragging

Often when dragging a window aside it jumps and stack on top of the most left top window (or so). It seems this happens when dragging a window on top of another window's title but not always. When it does happen it can be reproduced several times in a row but sometimes it doesn't happen at all, hence this behavior is inconsistent. It is also application independent.
Is it possible to get rid of this behaviour?

At least on Windows this depends on the OS setting, and not a JVM setting (at least I'm not aware of a setting which controls window dragging, I only know of one which affects window resizing)

  • Urgent: left and right cut off when dragging entire clip to project

When I right click the clips in the event library and click "Select entire clip" and drag that to the project window, the left and right sides of the video are cut off.  If I select only a single clip and drag that up or a portion of a clip, it looks ok.  I need to get this thing done in an hour or so and I am baffled because there are people in this video that are being cut off!  Help!

Actually, the more I look at it, the entire frame is cropped, even though I have "Initial Video Placement" set to fit in frame, not crop.  The quality really gets lousy too when dragging them in.  I am baffled why dragging a single clip fits the entire video, but dragging the entire clip series gets cropped...??

  • Clips automatically lengthened when dragged into timeline

    Hello,
I'm new to FCP X, just as I am with video editing so please forgive my noviceness!
When I drag clips from the Event Library into the Timeline(?) (The bit at the bottom, where you arrange the clips) they are automatically made longer. For example, one clip has a length of 54 seconds in the event library, but when dragged into the timeline, it has been stretched to 56 seconds. I'm trying to match a band's studio recording footage to the finished audio and it is impossible when the clips are slowed down (and subsequently lower in pitch).
Is there a setting I need to know about to prevent this? How can I fix this problem?
    Many thanks

If you mark the 'In' and 'Out' points and then press the 'E' key, the clip should be added to the Timeline exactly as marked in the Event Library.
Press 'Q' to add it above the Timeline as a Connected Clip at the Skimmer or the Playhead position.
Press 'W' to insert it into the Timeline at the Skimmer or the Playhead position (all the other clips will be pushed along the timeline to make room for it).
Press 'D' to overwrite it to the Timeline at the Skimmer or the Playhead position.
If you try some of these options and the clip duration changes, I suggest you trash your preferences.
Unexplained faults like this can often be fixed by clearing out FCP X's preferences (for some reason, they get knotted up from time to time).
Download Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager (free, simple to use, and perfectly safe, both to download and use).
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
With Preference Manager, you can backup the Prefs when FCP X (or any of the Apple Professional Applications) are working normally. Then when either of the applications are acting strangely, Trash the Preferences, then Restore from your backups (just a mouse-click).
If you trash the prefs and don't restore them, you will need to manually restore all your FCP X settings again, so it's a great idea to backup Preferences from time to time when FCP X is working well, then your backups are up to date.
Doesn't fix every problem, but it fixes a lot.

  • Premiere Pro CS6 Crashes When Dragging

Trying to edit in PP CS6 and keep getting this error every time I drag files.
"Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premiere Pro to shut down. We will attempt to save your current project."
This happens every time I try to drag any footage. Regardless of files or locations.
I'm working (at least trying to) on a Mac Pro (Mid 2012) running OS X Yosemite 10.10.1.
    Processor- 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory- 16GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics- ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB
The Adobe applications manager says everything is up-to-date and I've tried everything I can think of.
    Restarting computer.
Testing different video files in the project (happens with all)
Moving files to a different drive
Creating a new project on a different drive
Opening old project with footage that worked before.
No luck with anything.  Any help is greatly appreciated! I've got deadlines to meet and no backup computer!

Hi, did you get anywhere with this? I am having a similar issue in Premiere Pro CC 2014.
    The issue is as follows:
If I try to drag a clip, sequence, effect or transition ANYWHERE within the program, it will crash - with the serious error message. In order to 'reset' this, I HAVE to restart my machine. Once I have done so, I can continue editing as normal for a while (up to an hour, or so) but eventually, it WILL crash again.
The crash ONLY happens when drag something... This can include moving a clip on the timeline, dragging a clip form the source viewer or project window, dragging an effect or transition.
The crash happens after I have clicked, as soon as I start to move my mouse.
I CAN click and drag to extend in and out points on the timeline, and I can do 'insert' edit using the button on the source monitor. The footage plays fine.
I am trying this on a CLEAN OS X install, with only Adobe packages installed, to eliminate any potential of interference from other programs. There are no third party plugins or drivers installed.
My system is: Macbook Pro 2011, 16GB Ram, 1tb SSD, OS X Yosemite 10.10.1. Intel Graphics card, so no option to turn on or off hardware acceleration. It is set to software only.
I have tested this with projects and footage on an external drive, same issue.
I have been using the system on Mavericks and had no problems. I'm guessing it was either the update to Yosemite (I have reinstalled from scratch numerous times to rule out any errors during installation), OR a recent change to Premiere.
Interestingly, I have noticed that once this crash has occurred in Premiere, a similar problem will occur in After Effects. Again, until the machine is restarted.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!!

  • Correct clipping when calling "paint()" from thread

How do I achieve correct clipping around JMenus or JTooltips when calling paint() for a Component from a background thread?
    The whole story:
Trying to implement some blinking GUI symbols (visualizing alerts), I implemented a subclass of JPanel which is linked to a Swing timer and thus receives periodic calls to its "actionPerformed()" methods.
In the "actionPerformed()" method, the symbol's state is toggled and and repainting the object should be triggered.
Unfortunately, "repaint()" has huge overhead (part of the background would need to be repainted, too) and I decided to call "paint( getGraphics() )" instead of it.
This works fine as long as there is nothing (like a JMenu, a JComboBox or a JTooltip) hiding the symbol (partially or completely). In such case the call to paint() simply "overpaints" the object.
I suppose setting a clipping region would help, but where from can I get it?
Any help welcome! (I alread spent hours in search of a solution, but I still have no idea...)

For all those interested in the topic:
It seems as if there is no reliable way to do proper clipping when calling
    "paint()".
The problem was that when my sub-component called "repaint()" for itself, the underlying component's "paintComponent()" method was called as well. Painting of that component was complex and avoiding complexity by restricting
on the clipping region is not easily possible.
I have several sub-components to be repainted regularly, resulting in lots of calls to my parent component's "paintComponent()" method. This makes the
repainting of the sub-components awfully slow; the user can see each one begin painted!
Finally I decided I had to speed up the update of the parent component. I found two possible solutions:
    a) Store the background of each of the sub-components in a BufferedImage:
When "paintComponent()" is called: test, if the clipping rectangle solely
contains the region of a sub-component. If this is true check if there
is a "cached" BufferedImage for this region. If not, create one, filling
it with the "real" "paintComponent()" method using the Graphic object of
the BufferedImage. Once we have such a cached image, simply copy it the
the screen (i.e. the Graphics object passed as method parameter).
    b) To avoid the handling of several of such "cached" image tiles, simply
store the whole parent component's visible part ("computeVisibleRect()")
in a BufferedImage. Take care to re-allocate/re-paint this image each
time the visible part changes. (I need to restrict the image buffer to
the visible part since I use a zooming feature: Storing the whole image
would easily eat up all RAM!) In the "paintComponent()", simple check
if the currently buffered image is still valid - repaint if not -
and copy the requested part of it (clip rect) to the screen. That's it!
    The whole procedure works fine.
    Best regards,
    Armin

  • Mac mini VPN headless, slow graphics performance when no monitor plugged in

I am using a Mac mini, headless, with no monitor, keyboard or mouse, via VPN from a Windows machine over a LAN. Everything works fine and setting everything up was a breeze. However, something very odd I noticed was that if my Mac mini does not have a monitor plugged in to its video output, the rendering of the graphics over the VPN is very slow. It is most noticable when hovering over the dock and activating the animations etc, though it is noticable all the time. It's so bad that it would be IMPOSSIBLE to watch a video clip or simple animation. It's as though frames are being dropped. Now, this can be immediately fixed if a monitor is plugged into the Mac mini and turned on, and the VPN to the Mac mini from my Windows machine works flawlessly and the graphics are rendered perfectly, with little to no delay or frame skipping.
I have a hunch that the Mac could be disabling some kind of graphics acceleration when the monitor is not plugged in, but I am not a Mac expert by far, this is my first Mac experience. It was purchased solely for the VPN and headless use, so if I can't get it working properly, it's a waste.
Note, I have tried several VPN client/viewer combinations and they do not change the situation.
    Thanks in advance.

Also, when I try to use the remote with the Mac mini (pressing the menu button), over VPN with no monitor attached to the machine, I simply get a white blank screen until I press the menu button again.

I must have been HALF ASLEEP when I wrote this.
I do not mean VPN, I mean VNC!!. Sorry for the confusion.

  • Finder Slow, windows jumpy or jagged when dragging?

I just updated to Mac OS 10.7.5 Lion and the finder seems to be slow, when I drag windows there skipping, NOW I do have a 2 monitor setup and when I drag the window to it, its just fine, even when I scroll with a mouse wheel its skippy, I play Minecraft and it runs fine and then BAM FPS drops to 4 or 5fps ( that might be different I know but who knows), also, when I'm on Safari it lags as well not the loading of the site just when I scroll. I have an Nvida 8800 512MB graphics card. I have done all the updates and Nvida doesn't have drivers for this card for the Mac for 107.5. What could be causing this?

Anyone have an answer to this seems all I do is search google for Finder slow on Mac Os X 10.7.5 and all I find is Time Machine slow this slow that. I really need to know I hate having to restart my Mac over and over. I have 7GB RAM if that helps?

  • Graphics move when adding filters

I'm having strange things happen when using graphics.
When I add a filter eg GausBlur my graphic moves down when adjusting blur. I also get this when I apply other filters as well, but usually when I add a second filter/plug to the graphic.
I'm on a macpro dual quad, 16g ram and all apps are up to date
    Cheers

The graphic shift has nothing to do with Blackmagic--that's a bug (or at least an issue) with Premiere itself.
It's pretty simple to replicate. Plop a Drop Shadow effect on a title (or other alpha graphic), followed by a Gaussian Blur (or Fast Blur) effect. You can first see the shift just by swapping the order of the effects; they can be left at detent, and simply changing the relative positions of the effects will cause the graphic to jump.
If Drop Shadow is above Gaussian Blur in the effects stack, even with GB set to 0, changing the Softness parameter of DS will shove the graphic down and to the right.
If Gaussian blur is above Drop Shadow in the effects stack, even with DS set to 0, changing the Blurriness parameter of GB will shove the graphic down and to the right. However, in this case, you can mitigate that negative effect by ticking the Repeat Edge Pixels option in GB. No matter what you move, the graphic will stay where it should. This doesn't work in the other scenario, however.
My understanding of this--though I'm not sure whether it's a bug or a functional limitation--is that when you're adjusting these softness parameters for either effect, you are altering the clip's dimensions via the alpha channel. That's why ticking the Repeat Edge Pixels option stops this; it clamps the alpha channel to the original image's dimensions. As you adjust these parameters, the alpha channel's dimensions bloom/grow larger, and this changes the clip's anchor point, causing the shift.
Obviously, this isn't right, no matter how you slice it, but I suspect that simply saying it's a bug is not really getting to the heart of the matter. I imagine there are some larger underlying issues with the way Premiere Pro handles alpha channels and effects that manipulate them that would have to reworked first. In other words, this is probably not something you'll see in a point update; it will likely require a new version of the software to see a true fix.

  • Mac Pro + Airport Extreme = Mouse Cursor Chaos Display Issues When Dragging

Graphic display issues (mouse lag and latency displayed on the screen when dragging an object (photo, window, application, document, etc.) from the top 50% of the screen to the bottom 50% of the screen. Mouse cursor starts to display serious lag and latency and loses ability to stay on the object being dragged anywhere below the 50% horizon line of any display.
Mac Pro (any model 2007 to current 2009 production) with Airport Extreme installed.
    Symptoms:
On any object the mouse cursor selects and then drags from anywhere in the upper portion (50%) of the screen display (no matter the display being used) to the bottom portion (50%) of the screen display, shows great lagging and latency as if the cursor is "hanging on for dear life" or as if the processor were running several intense applications and cursor was not responding.
The mouse cursor fails to stay in concert with the object being dragged anywhere in the lower portion of the screen although is fine in the upper portion of the screen.
Issue only presents itself when selecting and dragging an object from bottom to top or top to bottom of the display.
I have deduced that the issue with this "polarity" (i.e. the 50% horizon level of the screen north and south) is due to some magnetic or waveform interference from the Airport Extreme card and most likely due to its position on the motherboard and/or next the the Intel processor. Also could be enhanced by the Bluetooth card which is also located next to this card.
After checking various Mac Pros (at Apple stores, friends and received via Apple Online store) the common denominator is the Airport Extreme Card. When it is NOT present, no issues are present with display cursor lag; when it IS present, all the above apply.
No one at Apple seems to realize this issue or cares about it. Ditto for Genius Bar Apple Employees; seems to be a mystery on par with the Bermuda Triangle (which ironically is also magnetically-polarity related.)
Still waiting for a Apple Product Engineer to contact me and have 3 tickets open with Apple from 3 different Mac Pros on this. Problem first noticed May 2009 although first generation Mac Pro from 2007 also suffered same issues and just now putting the puzzle together on this relationship.
Any others out there notice this as well? Check it out if you have a Mac Pro and Airport Extreme Card installed inside of it.

I also have the same exact problem. I have a i5 iMac Mid 2011 with an upgrade to 10.10 Yosemite connected to an external display. I like you never had this issue with Mavericks. Zoom is so painfully slow now that I had to disable it. My iMac has 12 GB of RAM and even with no apps opened, zoom is killer slow.. makes me want to punch a wall-kinda slow.
I think it's clear to say that something is up with 10.10.. some bug.
    Apple please fix us zoomers
