Family Plan: 2 iPhones - 1 Computer

I'm just about ready to buy my 2 iPhones (for me and my girlfriend), and I'm going for the family plan, plus unlimited texting for the both of us, which would be an additional $30, if I'm correct.
What I'm thinking about now is the activation. If it helps to answering my question, I own a 2nd generation Mid-end MacBook, my girlfriend a 1st generation iMac 17-inch. We don't live together.
Okay, now my question is how the activation of two iPhones work through the Family Plan using one computer (my MacBook). I'm guessing I plug in both iPhones to my USB ports, occupying the only two that's there, and I just go through the whole process like normal? But, the thing is, how does the second iPhone get activated? I mean, will activating one iPhone with a Family Plan detect the other one that I have plugged in? Or do I have to activate them individually?

I'm sorry if I'm not making any sense. It's hard for me to explain. I'm want to get through this activation thing w/o any issues whatsoever so I can just go ahead and use them immediately. I really don't want to have to go back to the Apple store or AT&T to sort this out.
Thanks in advance.
Harold

I think this is going to work OK, considering what I've read above. But if you'd indulge me so I could clarify my understanding of this.
I've had an iPhone for a couple of months now, and my son, who lives in another city, is getting his mom an iPhone for Mother's Day. I have the single-user AT&T plan, of course. If I understand the above correctly, in order to add the second iPhone to my account and change the account to a Family Plan, I would:
• Dock the new iPhone to my computer, using my iTunes account.
• At the appropriate prompt, select the option to add the new iPhone to an existing account.
• Follow directions to convert that account to a Family Plan (according to whatever options I choose).
• Let the iPhone activate, then check my AT&T Web page to make sure my wife's name appears as the primary user.
Correct?
I'll also need to add the ability for her iPhone to make calls to The Philippines, but I assume I'll do that by later calling AT&T and requesting that service.

  • Switching over to Verizon family plan with iPhone 4S?

I'm switiching from T-mobile to Verizon for the iPhone. Now the rest of my family would like to switch over as well but only one of them wants the iPhone 4S with me. When I went through a mock purchase with the regular iPhone 4. apple.com told me I had to visit a store to set up my family plan and would not let me pre order anything unless I was starting anew verizon contract by myself without a family plan. Is ther a way around this and if not, what's next? Will the iPhone be available at a Verizon store so my family and I can set up all our phones at once? Or do My brother and I need to go to an apple store to get our iPhones and set up the plan, but from there where and when would the rest of my family get their phones? Can anyone shed any light on this or offer any insight? I'm new to the chaos of trying to get an iPhone, especially when switching carriers. Thanks.

IMO, your best bet is to go to a VZW store and work it all out there.  They can switch you over and get you the phones you want right there in the store.

  • Switching to AT&T with family plan -- need multiple iPhone 4's

We are currently Verizon customers coming to AT&T for the iPhone 4. We want to get three iPhone 4's, along with another regular phone, and put them on a family plan. My son lives 4 hours away, and won't be able to come to the local AT&T store on June 24 to get a phone.
Because of the limit of one per customer, can my husband and I each pre-order a phone and then still buy an additional iPhone 4 for my son at the AT&T store on June 24?
Could my son pre-order an iPhone 4 and have it shipped to my address for me to have activated with the other phones? He is not planning to transfer his number, the rest of us on the plan are.
Since he's not porting his old number, could he pre-order and have the phone shipped to him and then add it to our family plan once we've activated our new phones? Or do all the phones on the plan have to be activated at the same time and place?
Any information would be appreciated -- thanks!

AT&T has a whole upgrade and new account guide on its website. Looks like new accounts can order one per person in line but only one per account online. Existing accounts can order one new iPhone per line (numbers with AT&T accounts). Nothing has been released about Apple's pre order policy.

  • Trying to get iPhone with Family Plan.

I currently am on a family plan, and would like to get the new iPhone, if I add another line and get the iPhone will I be able to change the iPhone to another line on the Family Plan that already has the data and text packages already on it and then just use an old phone on that line that does not require a data package and just pay the $10 a month?

Why was I under the impression that you had to buy a data plan when you add a line with a smartphone?  I too have a family share plan and if I were to add a line to the plan, I could do so for $10/month but I'd have to get a basic phone otherwise to get a smartphone it would be $10/month + Data plan for that line... That's not the case?
I am not following here. You may have been "under the impression that you had to buy a data plan when you add a line with a smartphone" because you do have to buy a data plan when you add a line with a smartphone. Furthermore, you have to keep the data plan as long as the smartphone is active on that line. If you activate a basic phone on that line at some point in the future, you can cancel the data plan as you will no longer have a smartphone on that line.
So yes, if you get a smartphone on a new line, the cost for that line will be $10/month + the cost of the data plan.
If you are only adding the new line just to get a smartphone which you can then switch to another line, you can cancel the data plan on the NEW line after the smartphone is switched to the other line because the new line will no longer have a smartphone active on it. The cost for the new line will then be $10/month.

  • Upgrade to iphone - downgrade part of family plan

I am currently under my parents family plan. Our contract ends in November 2011. I would like to get the iphone soon. My father would like to downgrade his plan to something with less minutes. I would like to keep the same plan i currently have with my blackberry but would like to upgrade to the iphone. Would i have to wait until the contract ends to make all these changes? if not then will there be any charges beside the fee for the new phone itself?

You can change your calling plan at any time, it will not affect your upgrade eligibility or contract. There will be no extra charges for changing your plan. If you and your father are on the same account (I'm assuming you are) when he changes the minutes, just remember that your line will have fewer minutes to use as well, as they are shared among all lines on the account.

  • Upgrade non-smartphone line to iPhone 4S and then transfer to different phone line on family plan

I am on a family plan where I have a smart phone and my father and mother have normal non-data phones.
My line is not due for an upgrade until June 2012.
A verizon rep told me that I could use my father's upgrade to pre-order and activate an iPhone 4S and then re-activate my father's non-smartphone on his phone # and activate the iPhone 4S on my own phone #.
Once activated on his phone number they will add the Data plan; but once I reactivate his old non-data phone I will no longer need the data plan.
Will this work? I'm not sure the rep I spoke to understood that my father has a non-data phone when she explained this procedure.

If you have an online account with Verizon Wireless, you can transfer the upgrade from one number on your account to another number on your account (for example, transfer the upgrade from your father's phone to your phone).
Sign on to verizonwireless.com. Log in with your user ID and password. Click on My Verizon, and select Upgrade Device. Below each phone on your account, there will be an upgrade device date, and a link to Transfer Upgrade. Click the link and it will ask you which line you want to transfer from, and you can transfer the upgrade to your phone. You won't need to switch the data plan on your father's phone at all.
I just did the same thing on my account to be ready for the new phone tomorrow. Hope this helps!

  • I have purchased a new iPhone on an upgrade from one of my family plan numbers, how do I activate it to use with another number on my account

I purchased a new iPhone through upgrading one of the phones on my att family plan. when I receive the phone how do i switch it to another phone number on my plan I want to use it with?

I have a friend who does this every year. He just brings both phones into his AT&T store and they swap the numbers for him. Pretty painless process, as long as they are not too busy (i.e. iPhone lauch day)

Thank you for reaching out to us, labrylao4. Regarding the issues with messaging, is this affecting only SMS, iMessages, or both? When you or her try to send each other messages, do you receive any error messages while it is sending? If it is for iMessages, have you tried to send while connected to WiFi?

  • Getting iphone, Questions about Family Plan. NEED HELP!

So right  now I am on a family plan with my Dad and mother and we all have old phones that are basic basic. Our family plan has no Data plan at all, and in fact the plan is so old that it does not exist anymore. However I am moving away soon and I want to upgrade to an iphone. My question is this, If I upgrade, will I have to get my own plan? Or will I be able to just upgrade my phone and add the data charges just to my phone without making my parents upgrade their phones as well?
Any help will be awesome. I don't want to go into the store and talk to a sales person because they are motivated by commission so it would be in their best interest to upgrade all or them. So if I can go in there educated about the specifics of upgrading it would help.
    Thanks!!

Thanks to our forum member for the great information!
In addition, please note that you will most likely be able to keep your current calling plan when you upgrade your line to an iPhone 4; however, if the iPhone 4 is not compatible with your current calling plan you will be notified when you process your order online if you login to your My Verizon account and you will be presented with your new calling plan options.
If your calling plan is compatible with the iPhone 4, you will be able to simple upgrade to the iPhone 4 device and add the data plan to your line. This does not affect your parents calling plan in any way. You can also separate your line from the family calling plan and have an individual calling plan for your line and have your parents lines stay with their family share plan.
If you do not feel comfortable ordering your upgrade phone online or at a store, you can also order your upgrade from the comfort of your home if you dial 1-800-922-0204 to contact our customer service department.

  • How many iphones I can buy the contract price by using family plan?

The apple.com only allows me to buy one iphone.
if I choose a sprint family plan, can I buy more than one iphone by contract price?
Can I buy them on apple.com or I need to go to a sprint retail?

I believe Apple's limit is 2 phones per purchase, at least during the first few weeks of a release.  That's not to say you could not do 2 purchases of 2 phones.
How many lines to do you have elligible for upgrade?

  • Family Plan Question for iPhone 3G

My brother and I share a family plan together. He already has a first generation iPhone on the account and I am getting the 3G iphone when is comes out.
Will our plan go up 30 dollars when I get the iPhone setup or will it go up just 10 dollars for me adding the 3g data price on the account?
This probably didn't make any sense lol, but any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Brendan

Info I've been getting from ATT:
2g(original) remains 20 bucks for data and 200 text message
3g add 30 dollars to account and if you want text - 5 bucks for 200 messages.
10 dollars more would be only if you upgraded to 3g and gave away old iphone.
since you're keeping 2 iphones to account you need data for each iphone and its corresponding data plan. You will renew a 2 year contract with att for 3g and if eligible for upgrade you pay discount price and 18 dollars upgrade fee to appear next bill !

  • More questions about iphone family plan - second line regular phone

I am planning to switch from a verizon family plan(2 phones) to att family plan with 1 3g iphone and one regular phone.
I will get the iphone and my wife won't
what is the best free phone to get from att ?
and how can i do this in apple retail store? they don't sell other phones right?
don't want to go to att store because they usually out of stock of iphone...

I would say your best bet is to go to an apple store and buy your iphone. Apple stores do not carry any other AT&T phones, and AT&T stores do not have many free phones. Once you buy your phone register online with AT&T and add a line there, they have tons of free phones online and ship second day air.

  • IPhone & Family Plan

Hello. I really need help here. I need to find out some information about prices.
    1. How much would it be with a family plan of 1400 shared minutes with one iPhone and two normal phones along with unlitmited texting for the iPhone?
How much monthly, though. Not at the start.
Also, I do not currently have AT&T, i'm switching so is there a difference in price there?
also how much is the average govenrment charges + surcharges?
    Thanks in advance!

    http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/specials/iPhoneCenter.html
The 1400 FamilyTalk plan is $129.99/month.
It only includes 2 lines...one additional non-iPhone line is $9.99/month.
    Unlimited messaging is $19.99/month.
So that adds up to $159.97.
As for taxes and fees, those will vary by your location. You can get an estimate of what they will be by going to http://www.wireless.att.com/customerservice/additionalcharges and putting in your zip code.
If you are still in a contract with your current cellular provider they will charge you a fee for early termination of the contract. This fee is typically $175 - $200.
