FCP 4.5 on Intels

I am considering buying a Macbook or maybe an Imac in the spring and wanted to get some idea of the capability of these machines, if I decide to run FCP 4.5 on them. I primarily edit DV footage, but will be embracing HDV in the next few months too, so, How do these new machines, with their dual core processors handle this video and moreover, multiple layers of video and effects in real time?

What Brian said (4.5 won't run on intel).
Plus, as no one here in userland has run such a configuration (since the Universal Binary version won't be out for another month or two), there is no way to know how well it will perform.

• FCP 2 on iMac Intel 2009?

When I had an iMac G3 (2002) with OS X and OS 9 Classic, I had no trouble installing the FCP 2 in the Classic environment. Then later I was able to upgrade to FCP 3 in the OS X environment.
I no longer use that computer and intend to deinstall the FCP. But, I am faced with a situation: Since I have only the upgrade of FCP 3, I cannot install it except on top of FCP 2. But, FCP 2 it seems cannot be installed in anything later than the OS 9 Classic environment. Does anyone know of a solution here other than buying a whole new FCP 3 (or later?) to install on my new iMac?
If I have to buy a new one, which one do I have to get for compatibility with my new computer?

Are you talking about Final Cut Pro 3 or the new Final Cut Studio, containing Final Cut Pro 7?
If you're talking about the "old" FCP 3, I'm not sure how well it will run on your intel iMac. The recommended environment for FCP 3.0.4 is OS X version 10.2.8 and Quicktime 6.2, according to this list.
Having said that, I know I ran FCP3 on later versions of OSX and Quicktime without problems, but running it on an Intel mac under Snow Leopard might be a step too far!

• FCP 5 upgrade on intel duo core?

Can anyone comment on any stability issues with an upgrded FCP 5 Studio package running on an Intel powered machine? We are purchacing a new lap top and want to run shows edited on the G5.
Thanks

We are purchacing [sic] a new lap top and want to run shows edited on the G5.
Run "shows" means what? And has what to do with the stability of FCS?

• FCP not Universal on Intel

I recently purchased a new 24" iMac (2.16GHz). My wife needs to complete a project using Final Cut Pro. Problem is - we don't have the crossgrade yet. That will take weeks to get in I'm sure.
Question is: Should we install the non-Universal version on my new Intel Mac? Will it be SUPER SLOW? I think I should have planned this a bit better...

I'd go FCP on the PB G4 867. I used a PB 1Ghz until very recently and for simple projects that didn't require a lot of rendering, it was great.
I wouldn't advise iMovie if you will be wanting to complete the project in FCP. You'll have to do some dancing to get the footage and sound back to FCP.

• FCP 4.5 on Intel Mac?

A couple of general compatibility questions:
Will an Intel-based Mac run Final Cut Pro HD 4.5?
Also, will a PPC running Leopard do all right with 4.5?
Thanks.

David is correct to say that FCP 4.5 is not supported on Intel machines, but FCP 4.5 will run fine on 10.5 and 10.5.6 on Intel Macs. I'm running it now on a unibody 2.53 MBP. You need to follow the advice here:

• Will my copy of FCP run on the Intel machines

I currently have a G5 with a PowerPC chip and I am looking at purchasing one of the new MacBooks. However, I heard a rumor on the internet that my copy of FCP, which was purchased a year ago, will not run on the Intel machines.
Is this correct?

http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/
Ok I found the link. So I have the entire Final Cut Studio Production Suite that I bought this Spring. So that means it will just cost me $49 for the upgrade?
Does the crossover effect any other applications?

• FCP 4.5 on Intel iMac

Hi
I expect this question has been asked alot.... I am about to upgrade to an intel iMac 20'' with 1 Gb ram are there any problems running final cut pro 4.5 on the new intel machines? and if so are the patches available to fix this?
Thanks
Jon

Hi,
Once agian let me INSIST, you can run FCP v5 for powerpc on a mac book pro, The apple website may say you cannot but have you tried this yourself or are you going on their information??
I have tried this and although you may not find this conclusive proof, i have gone to the trouble of taking a screen grab of my system profiler and apps list.

As we can see in the apps list highlighted, Final cut pro version 5 for power pc. In the system profile we can see i am running a intel core duo machine.
You will have to trust me that this does work, i wouldn't have gone to all this trouble if i was not telling the truth.
The apple website is not gospel and you should try bending the rules sometimes it's amazing what you can achieve!!!

• To surrender or not to surrender FCP studio disks for intel upgrades

I don't have intel chips in my macs, but I am doing work with a guy that has the FCP studio 5.1 upgrade. Some assets are not backwards compatable.
I could go up, but I dont' like the idea of having to give back my discs in case a drive fails and I have to reload FCP.
What are you you guys doing about making the migration?

I used Disk Utility to make images of the discs before I sent them in. I also sent them in right before vacation, and when I got back they were waiting for me.
You could also just clone your system drive before sending them.
There's plenty of ways to prepare yourself for a potential crash, especially since it only takes about a week for the exchange.

• Non-functioning cross-dissolves with FCP 5.1 on intel

I am having trouble with FCP 5.1 running on my macbook. My cross dissolves work when used between two clips but as a fade to black, it doesn't work, or rarely does. I have 8 hours to finish this project to be showed at a wedding reception tomorrow. I've tried trashing the prefs and it did nothing, i emptied all my render files, checked for updates and nothing makes a difference. Please help, I'm runnng out of time.
Patrick

Thanks for trying...
Very strange...and not discounting your proficiency with FCP.
When you place the dissolve end on edit, the dissolve shows up on the end of the clip? but then the clip never dissolves to black?
Yes, the dissolve will show up on the end of the clip, but it plays back as if it is not there. This happens whether it is rendered or not. If I use a cross dissolve between two clips, it plays back perfectly. 'Some' of the clips will dissolve to black but the majority play back as though the transition is not there.
Any chance you're working with a 'favorite' dissolve that may have it's begin/end parameters adjusted?
Tried that and went back and got the original transition and made sure everything was set how it should be. I thought for sure it owuld be the prefs, but no such luck.
Any chance you've got your video layers scrolled downwards and there's a clip on a lower track?
No, I have made sure there is only one track with nothing underneath.
Are any of these clips nested?
Nope.
Thanks for trying though.

• Running FCP HD 4 on Intel Mac?

Hello
Not sure where I should post this....
I recently acquired FCP HD 4 (retail) for a screamin' deal. I was hoping it would run on my Mac Pro. It installed fine but when I try to open it, I get configuration error with hardware/software is missing and lists ppc G4 & AGP graphics card. Now, it won't run on my eMac cuz the eMac has hardware issues and runs @ half its speed, not to mention lack of ram.
So, my question is, is it possible to hack FCP HD to make it "think" it's running on a PPC mac?
(Is this a safe topic to bring up?)
Music Luver

The reason you got it so cheaply is because it was completely obsolete software over 5 years ago and is not of any use to anyone who has a remotely newish computer.
For an expert opinion on whether anything can be done you need the Final Cut Studio forum but I wouldn't hold out much hope as people are having problems getting FCP6 to work with Lion.

• Will FCP-X work on Intel i7 (2.8 GHz; 2 cores)?

Have MacBook Pro that seems to meet requirements for FCP-X except I'm not sure about the processor.

You need to check your MBP against the system requirements here:
http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
The only comment I would add is that Apple recommend 2 GB RAM as minimum - this is way too little fore FCP X.

• FCP 5 won't stay open for more than a minute

First I upgraded from Quicktime to Quicktime Pro to convert .avi's to .mov's. That worked for about three weeks then suddenly all converted files played without any sound. Now after editing an mp4 on FCP I decided to upgrade the media to avi, so I upgraded the mp4 to avi using VisualHub, whose output plays fine in Quicktime (with sound), but while editing it together in FCP I've started to have problems while trying to integrate FCP with LiveType. I have to save after every change to the sequence. After integrating a LiveType file into FCP I found FCP shuts down after running for a minute, regardless of what I'm doing with it.
I'm currently working on an iMac Intel Duo and hope this doesn't rise out of a non-universal version of FCP running on an intel processor (perhaps a problem with Rosetta). If so I might have to upgrade to FCP 5.1
Any ideas?

How would I check the pixel dimensions?
With the mp4 they were copied off of a dvd with a program called Handbrake (it copies DVD's onto your iPod), though often whatever I get out of Handbrake I also have to put through a program called moviepod (which converts media files into mp4 format and once the conversion's done it appears on your iTunes browser).
I recently purchased a DVR which can load DVD's into the computer through multiple formats but then the DVD was rented and I figured I just as well use the media I already had in my computer.
Oh, and by the way, Thank you for the help so far. Though I'm afraid there's no clear resolution in sight I appreciate your apt attention.
The avi media is just the mp4 media converted through VideoHub (I've had no luck with either .avi or mp4 files using Compressor). The problem with editing may rely in my choice of converting programs and not FCP at all (the truth is I don't know much about these programs, outside what I use them to do (convert media) ).

• Blu Ray EASY EXPORT option in new FCP 7

Would love to hear from anyone who has tried the new feature Easy Export in FCP 7 upgrade for Intel Macs, particularly the Blu Ray burning export from within FCP 7 to Blu Ray Disc. What is the quality (limits) and do we finally have actual Chapter Marker Options, and truely custom background / menu image options? I'm considering finally giving up on my PowerPC G4, and going with a new Intel based Mac, or wait a little longer if this upgrade is not worth it.
I'm currently burning Blu Rays with Toast 10 and a LaCie BD Drive with great results.

Some details on what is new, there is a link for the movie for sharing
http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/whats-new.html, also a link for a PDF about in depth (page 55 indicates you can use third party templates or your own. Someone mentioned it is XML based, but not sure if anyone has given it a whirl yet. I ordered my upgrades when it was announced, should have it soon, don't know when I will try though.

Your answer may be in those two sentences. Not sure which version of Final Cut and the rest you are running, and disregarding the blu-ray issue for a moment, if you system is working for you, and you are getting good results, that is one thing in favor of not changing right now. If the total of all the changes in the Studio are appealing, then perhaps it would be worth it. Right now you are burning blu-ray with results you like.
Alot of it depends on budget and the rest. Plus the new Intel will smoke in terms of speed and workflow. OTH, if those things are not jamming you up, well, maybe holding would be the prudent move. (Though of course the incremental change in the machine configuration would be something to make your head spin....:) )
