FCP academic version versus high definition camcorder

I’m planning to upgrade my camera for one with high definition, for example HDR-FX1 HDV and I would like to know if the final cut pro academic version 5.0.4 that I have would work
Thanks
Lina

  • Using Sony High Definition Camcorder with Premiere Elements

My computer is a HP Pavilion Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 CPU, [email protected] GHZ, 1.59 GHz, 1.99GB of Ram. It is used solely for music(SONAR and Band in a Box) and photo/video(Adobe Premiere) software and never used online. My computer says that in my C drive I have 159GB of free space, total 224GB. In my D drive I have 376MB free space, total 8.63GB.
I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0, plus Adobe Premiere Elements for Windows XP. (Old versions, I know)
Up until now I've transfered and edited what I've filmed and created productions with no problem what-so-ever in Adobe Premiere Elements using my Panasonic MiniDV camcorder. I now have the Sony HD (high definition)Handycam HDR SR11 and it's much more complicated to get my recorded images transfered to my Adobe software.
I can't figure out how to capture from the camcorder directly into Adobe Premiere Elements? I'm having to transfer it to my computer hard drive first and then add the media to Adobe Premiere. I have to record in SD (standard definition) to even do that.
Also, I can't figure out why the images once tranfered into Adobe Premiere Elements, are playing back misshaped (subjects are either elongated or short and chunky)?
    Am I doing something wrong?
Doesn't my version of Adobe Premiere Elements work with this particular camcorder?
Is it just a matter of upgrading to a newer Premiere for high definition/standard definition camcorders to work? If so, which one?
    Thanks for any help!
    Carolyn

As stated by Peter use AVCHD Upshift from VASST or upgrade to PE7.
Also you need to set up your hard drives properly.
The best way is to have 2 seperate hard drives. One small one for the OS and all your other programms and another large one for all your work. Hard drives are never to be partitioned. This slows down the workflow.

  • A good High Definition camcorder that is compatible with Mac OS X 10.5?

ok, i need to find a good HD camcorder for my macbook pro which uses imovie 08, but i am using imovie HD 6. my budget is around $250 and i am willing to purchase on ebay. i recently bought an HD camera off ebay for $130, it was good but i found out later it wasn't compatible with MAC! so, i need a little bit of help from anyone who knows anything about ebay, hd cameras, and mac support.
and one more question, is the Aiptek hd camera supporting Mac? - because is records in HD .MOV format which is mac format. (quicktime).

Those little Aiptek things, though supposedly shooting in hi-def, use high compression which iMovie HD 6 just can't deal with. If you buy one of those, you'll have to run the video through other programs first in order to make it compatible with iMovie 6.
They usually record in something like 720p ('progressive') mode, which iMovie generally doesn't like: it expects to receive normal i ('interlaced') video ..the kind which standard-def broadcast television generally uses.
A hi-def picture needs to be nice and stable for you to get the best out of it - otherwise it's just as much a wobbly blur as standard-def. So for good results you want a camera which has an image stabiliser built in. I don't think the cheap'n'cheerful Aipteks do.
Even though the Product Description may say "..A-HD is your 720p HD Camcorder, Digital Camera, and Personal Media Player/Recorder! Captures true to life, vibrant colors and astonishing High Definition images like you've never seen, right in the palm of your hand.." ..that's just advertising blurb or twaddle, of course. Who says that these are images "..like you've never seen.."? ..If you have already seen images from a JVC, Sony, Canon or other decent brand hi-def camcorder, then those from the Aiptek camcorders are pretty disappointing. But no advertiser is going to spend money to say "..images far more disappointing that those of other camcorders.." ..are they?
So - as Karsten suggests - you should be looking for an HDV hi-def camcorder on eBay.
P.S: You wrote "..records in HD .MOV format which is mac format. (quicktime).." ..but several QuickTime formats - although they do play in QuickTime Player - won't work properly within iMovie (e.g; sound or picture may be missing). Such formats need to be converted into another .mov, or .DV format before trying to use them in iMovie.

  • How come I don't have serial number button for FCP academic version?

I just received the Academic Version FCP and on the installation disk, there is no button to install the serial number or user information.

FCS comes with the serial numbers printed on the front of the getting started booklet. If you don't have that, you'll need to call Applecare. In the box you should find a card with Applecare phone support numbers.
Give them a call. New purchases come with 90 days support for installation issues.

  • Fcp academic version change

I have final cut studio 5.1 academic version. I realize i cannot upgrade the academic version so I am thinking of just buying fcp6 academic. my question is this- when I go to install fcp academic 6 will it automatically uninstall 5.1 and save my projects and project settings? thanks

Ok...then any ideas on how i 'upgrade' (change) from 5.1 to 6 without having 2 versions of fcp installed on my system or uninstall 5.1 and then instal 6 w/o losing my projects?

  • Helpful advice for new high definition camcorder owner

I recently purchased a new camcorder to record games for our high school basketball team. (Canon vixia HF R10)  I have been playing around with the settings to find the best setting for recording fast moving action.  Any advice on settings?

Really for a camcorder there isn't anything special.  Only things I can think of are:
    1)  Make sure you do not use any modes (such as "night mode") that can potentially drop the framerate below normal.
    2)  You probably have the option of 24p and 30p framerate modes - choose 30p for sports.
    That's basically it for video.
For still pictures, it's all about the fastest shutter speed, but for video - not important as long as your shutter speed doesn't go so slow as to reduce the framerate.

  • Canon HV10 High Definition Camcorder

I notice this device is supported in finalcut2, I also notice it only comes with a usb cable? Is there an option to hook up a firewire cable to it?
Does anyone have this camera? I would like to know before possibly making the wrong purchase?
Anyone have this camera and how does it work?
    Thanks

Well I was curious so I checked out the PDF manual online. Sure enough, page 12 shows the DV/HDV terminal (item 27) right below the Component and A/V output jacks. It's shown again in greater detail on page 57. Starting on page 64, directions are given to connect to a computer, complete with more pictures of the output terminal.

  • Insignia 5.0MP High-Definition Digital Camcorder

Does anyone know if this camcorder is pictbridge compatable?
it'd be cool to get one of those l'il pogo printers to print stills with, just not sure if this cam will work with it.
    thanks!

    Hi mylo,
The Insignia 5MP High Definition camcorder is not Pictbridge compatible, and in fact there are very few manufacturers that provide Pictbridge compatibility with a camcorder since Pictbridge is used for printing still images not videos. The manufacturers that have camcorders that are Pictbridge compatible are Canon, Sony, Panasonic, JVC, and Samsung. I hope this helps!

  • JVC High-Definition - Import/Playback Problems

    Hello,
I just bought a JVC High-Definition camcorder... and whenever I play back the files on my Macbook Pro, it sort-of skips, and the sound can't catch up (in Quicktime). Well, when I open it up with VLC, it works just fine!
My problem is with Final Cut... when I want to edit the footage... it freezes the comp.
It won't even play sound... and hardly video when I try playing it from the bin.
    Any suggestions? (with Easy Set-up?)
Not sure, any help would be greatly appreciated!

    THANK YOU!!!

I use the non-HD version of the same (or similar) camera you have. You have to convert the .tod files. My camera makes .mod files. I'm sure it's the same thing. I use a free program called mpegstreamclip to convert.
JVC recommends a program called Capty MPEG Edit. I dropped the fifty bucks. It works, but not as well as the free one. Go figure.
If you would like to send me a small .tod file, I'll try and convert for you and see what happens. Maybe save you a few bucks.

  • Why isn't my high definition video converting to standard definition?

What I'm describing here, I've successfully accomplished many, many times using Premiere Pro CS5 and now Premiere Pro CS6. Now, for the first time ever, it's not working and I'm completely baffled. (This is a high-end Windows 7 64-Bit machine with 16GB RAM running Premiere Pro CS6.)
Here's a basic summary of my workflow. Nothing out of the ordinary here.
    1. I shoot my video using a high definition camcorder (the same one I've been working with for the past year or two.
    2. I import my high definition video into a 1920x1080 sequence in Premiere Pro CS6.
    3. I edit my sequence until I'm happy.
    4. I enter and name my Encore chapter markers in the sequence.
    5. I create my Encore project and import the sequence as a timeline and set up my menus and such.
    6. I build my Encore project, first into a standard definition DVD image file (so I can later burn SD-DVDs) and then build it again into a high definition Blu-ray image file (so I can later burn Blu-rays).
The Blu-ray burn is turning out just fine.
But the video in the DVD burn is all black. I can jump around from chapter to chapter and I can hear the sound, but the video doesn't show up!
I tried this a couple times thinking that maybe Encore just messed up the SD-DVD creation process but I got the same result each time. When I preview the project in Encore, it all looks just right.
So I figured, okay, something's not working when I import the sequence.
I went back to Premiere Pro thinking I'd just export my 1920x1080 sequence into a widescreen standard definition AVI and create a new sequence just for the standard definition DVD.
The exported AVI is black as well!!
I don't get it. Why on earth won't my high definition video convert properly to standard definition?
The high definition sequence looks completely normal in Premiere Pro. What could I possibly be overlooking??
One final note. Just as another test, I copied and pasted the sequence in Premier Pro, truncated it to a couple minutes (the full sequence is 90 minutes long), and exported to a widescreen AVI again.
It just finished, I tried playing it back in Windows, and it, too, is all black, sound but no video.
Like I said, this is nothing new for me. I've done it countless times with other projects. I could really use some assistance with this one.

So I exported my completed high definition sequence to an MP4 and re-imported back into Premiere Pro. Right-clicked it and created a sequence from the clip. Then I imported my chapters from the old sequence into the new one.
I returned to Encore, modified my project to work off the newly created sequence (what a pain having to recreate all the scene links) and voila, it had no trouble making a DVD this time.
So I guess I'll get out of the bad habit of my old routine and create a sequence the "right" way from now on. Funny how we get used to doing something one way and stop thinking outside the box after a while.
Jim, I don't see how that's necessary. As long as I create an Encore project based on a good high definition sequence, I have never had to do anything other than have Encore build a standard definition DVD based on the high definition sequences. It has always done the conversion for me and produced really good DVDs. Once I create a DVD image that I'm satisfied with, I simply have Encore build a Blu-ray image using the exact same project, and that works perfectly as well. I suppose I may be missing something here but it all works and works well, so I don't see a reason to create two projects when one works well.
On a separate note, is it just me or doesn't everybody think it's high time that Adobe offer a feature to import markers from one sequence into another. I can do it automatically but I have to use a macro that I created separate and apart from Premiere Pro. For that matter, I think Encore should also offer a feature to remap all scene links to a new sequence instead of forcing me to fix them one by one myself.
Anyway, thanks to all of you for pointing me in the right direction!

  • High Definition

Just upgraded from making iMovies with 30 second clips from a stills camera to making them with a Sony High Definition Camcorder, HDR-HC7E(DV Tape) and would appreciate some advice on a few things regarding the 1080i high definition-I have made a few of these in iMovie and export them back to the camcorder for viewing through an HDTV. Since I have not yet bought the latter, I cannot view in HD.
The first question is what happens to stills(say from iPhoto) imported into an HD project in iMovie. I use stills selectively not only in the canned themes but also with a Ken burns effect to make some point in the movie. Specifically, does iMovie convert the imported still into a high definition clip if the project is high definition and does it matter?
Secondly, when exporting directly back to camcorder or via a file, a menu box pops up at or near the end of the transfer and asks if you want to make another copy. If you click no thanks the camcorder is disconnected. Is this what should happen?
Thirdly, can anybody recommend any useful sites/books for getting the best out of camcorder audio accessories- I have a clip on Lavalier which seems straightforward and substantially improves commentary audio whilst filming but I do not really know how to make the most of the shotgun mike which I also have.
Finally an observation. This camcorder is fantastic and works well with iMovie.

    ..mmm. delicious..
    Where was I..?
Sony's own mics for your camcorder are shown here (click on that link), and they clip onto the camera's 'Accessory Shoe'. Other mics can be plugged into the mic socket at the front of the camcorder.
Note that Sony cams have a 'plug-in power' socket for external microphones: that means that low voltage power is provided inside the microphone socket, to power those mics which can make use of that, instead of their needing a separate battery of their own. Not all external mics are wired the right way to make use of that. So MOST external mics work OK when plugged into a Sony; SOME work excellently, without needing a separate battery of their own (e.g; the wonderful little Vivanco EM216, which has terrific bass for a stereo mic so tiny!); and SOME mics give very poor results in that Sony external mic socket, because their own internal wiring is incompatible with the way that Sony send a low voltage though the socket. "Try before you buy" is the best motto.
Your own clip-on 'Lavalier' mic must be one of those which does work well with Sonys.
Many people buy the popular 'Audio-technica'-brand shotgun mics, but I'm very disappointed by them, finding them rather "thin" and "tinny", but - as with all mics - you've nothing to compare them with till you DO compare them with other brands of a similar type ..and perhaps many people are satisfied with them - or perhaps they've bought them, and then discarded them.
You don't say which shotgun mic you have.
You say "..I do not really know how to make the most of the shotgun mike which I also have.."
Generally, a shotgun mic picks up sound from directly ahead, and good sound from perhaps 6 feet (2 metres) away. But it WON'T pick up much sound from the sides, or behind it.
So you wouldn't use one at a party - because you'd miss all the general noise and "atmosphere" all around - unless someone was giving a speech, and you wanted to clearly pick up everything they said instead of it being drowned in the general noise, in which case you'd point the shotgun mic directly at them. So you'd use it at a wedding, to pick up the minister's words, and the bride's and groom's, and for speeches; but you wouldn't use it at a fairground, or a beach, or anywhere you wanted to pick up sound from all around.
It's like a telescope; it doesn't pick up what's everywhere around and nearby, but it picks up, and sharply focuses on, what's rather more distant. You wouldn't use one to record a conversation, unless the people talking were right next to each other and a few feet in front of you ..because it would pick up only the one person it's pointed at, and wouldn't pick up any others. But you WOULD use it to distinctly pick up someone at the other end of a fairly quiet room; someone giving a talk or a speech, or someone on stage, or the striking of a distant clock, or a distant whispered conversation.
Outdoors, shotguns can be quite susceptible to wind noise, so they generally come with a "windshield", but you often get better results with a specialist "fuzzy" cover such as a "Rycote".

  • Playback trouble with *.m2ts high-definition video files

I just bought a new high-definition camcorder and downloaded files to my PC (Lenovo 3000 V200, 4GB RAM, CPU is 2GHz), but they playback in a choppy manner. Anybody have any ideas?
Could it be that my processor is too slow? If so, can I upgrade my processor?

I ran into the same problem. I had some picturess that had great detail. I put them into iMovie to get the "Ken Burns" effect, but when I shared them and used them in KN the lost their detail. I called Apple and the tech told me how to get HD images into KN.
In iMovie there are many options as to size and resolution when you use share. I think that I have used HD images stright from Photoshop to KN also. Hope this might help, somewhat late.

  • Burning High Definition Video to DVD

I'm using a Canon HV30 with iMovie '09. How do I save the movies to DVD? Is there a high definition DVD burner that I can buy to save the movies to? If not, what's the point of a high definition camcorder if I can use the functionality? I'm guessing I'm missing something.

Nope; that's the way it is!
Apple would like you to produce hi-def files which you put on your Mobile.Me internet service, or put on your AppleTV, for people to see them.
You can, of course, get an external Blu-Ray burner and buy "Toast 10" to burn your HD files ..or you can burn HD files (..about 20 mins' worth..) onto a standard DVD using Toast or Apple's 'DVD Studio Pro' ..but they won't play on ordinary DVD players, possibly will on old Toshiba HD-DVD players, and should play on Macs.
It's the hi-def wars: burn to disc vs. distribute as (moderately) hi-def H.264/MPEG-4 files.
"..what's the point of a high definition camcorder if I can use the functionality?.." ..exactly!
Sometimes I put them on my Mobile.Me Gallery, sometimes I put them on my AppleTV ..now if only I could get this Serial-ATA LG Blu-Ray burner recognised by my Mac I'd be busy burning ..but which of my friends or relations has a Blu-Ray player on which to play the finished article if I send them a BD disc?
Wake me up again in 4 years' time, when this has all been resolved..

  • High Definition Video

    Forum,
I have posted a similar question before but can not find the post, please forgive me.
I have bought a Sony high definition camcorder model HDR-HC9E 1080/50i.
If I record in HD format can I use that format to produce a HD video if I do not have a HD burner and player.?
To put it another way is there any benefit in recording HD if I do not have the HD burner and player kit.
There seems little doubt it will have to be Sony "BLU RAY, but I am quite relaxed about that.
    I thank the forum again.
    Michael Craven.

+is there any benefit in recording HD if I do not have the HD burner and player kit.+
    Michael,
the higher is the resolution of the original format the better it will look even on a SD DVD.
Test it. Compare a SD DVD created from a DV project to a SD DVD from an HD.
    Best,
    G.
