FCP and the Panasonic HVX200

We are currently researching what is needed to upgrade to this new camera, Panasonic HVX200 with FireStore HD, and to see if our current FCP stations need upgrading. The two main stations are:
Dual 2.0/G5
6 GB RAM
2 TB RAID
23" Apple Display
ATI Video/128 MB
Sony NTSC Monitor
Kona Capture Card (not sure what version)
Flying Cow MIDIman
Sony BetaSP Deck
First, if we shoot DVCPRO 50, can these systems handle this type of footage? Also, can we shoot DVCPRO 50 and go down to DV as we normaly do? I'm guessing this footage will still be better than our old cam, even after downsampling.
Second, what would be a nice system to make this cam sing? I would start with a Quad G5 with lots of RAM. Looking for video card, monitor, HD suggestions.
Thanks in advance!
--Alex

YOu know what, I haven't tried the DV option yet. Tell you what, I'll shoot DVCPRO HD and DV and look at the difference. Other than the obvious quality differences, I'll see how it manages the lighting situations.
I don't want to try to dig into this camera and set it for DVCPRO 50, because they will be using it again for another shoot and I don't want to mess with the settings.
Are you shooting DVCPRO 50, then downconverting to DV for the quality? jst curious. I haven't done it, so I don't know the answer for sure.

  • Optimizing FCP and the studio

    Hello,
I am a user of FCP and the rest of the Studio, but I only use the "consumer" version. I use it for professional purposes ( I work for PCTV) and I wanted to know if anyone who uses this stuff professionally has any advice on how to make the system more powerful and usable. I find it hard to believe that Peter Jackson's crew had to wait 14 hours to render and compress a few minutes worth of graphics or compositions. What do I need to buy to make the system faster and more capable? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Matt

  • FCP and the QUAD

I have the latest version of FCP and just downloaded the update. Does this update allow FCP to take advantage of all the Quad's processing power?
    Thanks!
    david

It depends on what you are doing.
I have been doing some testing on a quad this morning. If it simple stuff like Colour Grading, or some filters, then no worries. It will go flat out.
If you do something like drop a basic motion project (10 seconds) into the timeline, and render it, the whole thing will grind to a halt. Do this, and pull up the activity monitor, and you will see the system trying to pick which processor it is going to use. it will swap processors about every 4 seconds, while the other 3 processors sit idle. fun fun fun.

  • FCP and the Elgato EyeTV 250 - Recording Live Gameplay

I have my Nintendo Wii connected to my Mac Pro, via the EyeTV 250. Due to the EyeTV's current limits, it is impossible to simultaneously record and play gameplay footage without a considerable amount of lag, using just the EyeTV software. The EyeTV FAQ suggests using a 3rd party program to get around this problem....
Another option is to use 3rd party software to capture what's happening on your display - you can isolate the EyeTV video window and record, while you're using EyeTV to play.
I am still fairly new to the world of digital video and editing (first year film student), and I am having trouble figuring this one out. How do I get this working? Any help would be appreciated!

I don't think there's any way to make FCP do this if that's what you're asking. You need some screen capture software.
SnapzPro is one, there are others.

  • Using AVI files in FCP and the 3ivx codec

    Hello there,
My video camera only films in .AVI files which the Mac cannot 'see' although the audio is fine. From my research it seems like the only codec available to allow you to 'see' the video on .AVI is the 3ivx codec which I downloaded before and which worked fine but then the trial ran out and left nasty watermarks all over my files which were a pain to get rid of. Is buying the codec the only thing to do? Has anyone bought the codec, so I know it's a safe website?
What I had been doing to avoid the codec was using iSquint to convert to mp4 and then using that file in editing software, then converting that to a youtube friendly file and then on to youtube itself, meaning that all the compression left the youtube video very very blurry.
Is the codec my only option?
Thanks for your help on this, it's driving me mental.

What camera only shoots 3ivx, Jenni?
And have you tried Perian yet? It will allow Quicktime to read 3ivx along with many other otherwise unsupported codecs. Suck it and see ... some users have issues with Perian installed, others get along with it just fine.
Converting to mp4 for editing is not recommended, nor is editing in 3ivx or any AVI wrapped codec for that matter. Convert it instead to a proper intraframe editing codec (such as good old fashioned DV) ... you can use the free MPEG Streamclip for this

  • Help w/ .mxf files from the Panasonic 200

First things first, thanks in advance for all the help.
Second, I've been reading posts from this site as well as others, and I believe my problem to be a new one that has not been addressed.
Here are the details. A friend of mine shot a short feature using the Panasonic AG-HVX200. He didn't do much research into the editing side of this camera and this is where the problem lies.
He only had one card, so he would transfer the files from his card to an external hard drive. The only files he kept off the card were the .mxf files. For each clip I have 1 video track and 4 audio files.
According to a tutorial I watched, I need the file, LASTCLIP.txt in order to import into FCP using the Panasonic P2 import function.
I downloaded flip4mac's product as well, but did not have any luck. I wasn't sure if this was because:
    1) It was shot on a Panasonic and not a Sony
    2) I didn't have the LASTCLIP.txt file
    3) I wasn't doing something right.
So I was wondering if anyone knew another method to turn these files into a .mov for FCP or if flip4macs would work and I was doing something wrong?
In addition, my friend was pretty sure he shot this at 24fps, 1080, which as I am reading is apparently not supported by FCP. is there a work around for this assuming we solve the first problem?
Basically, if anyone has any insight on how I can get these files to a workable file for FCP that would be so great. Thanks again

So all that was copied over were the Video and Audio folders from within the CONTENTS folder? No ICON, no CLIP?
Man...this is happening a lot lately.
While I have found that the lastclip.txt file isn't as important as I stressed in the tutorial, getting the ENTIRE Contents folder is. Not only do you have the Video and Audio files, but the pictures that the Import function on FCP uses (in the ICON folder) as well as information relating to each clip (the XML files in the CLIP folder).
Sorry, but flip4mac won't help here. And yes, 1080p24 is not in the Easy Setups...so is most likely not supported. What you can try is to make a sequence that matches the settings of the clip by using a trick I learned not too long ago:
www.proapptips.com/shane NON-STANDARD CODECS IN FCP. Try that and see if things work. If not...
Man...I just did a test. I copied ONLY the Video and Audio files to my hard drive and tried to import. "Could not find a P2 volume." I got this all the time until I had ALL the folders in the CONTENTS folder. I was, however, able to import without the LASTCLIP.txt file. But no, if one of the other folders were missing...even the empty ones, I could not import.
So...without those folders you are out of luck...at least on FCP. An Avid HD system on a PC can read the MXF files natively, so it might not need all the other folders.
I was a DP on a film in college where we got a brand new camera to use, a Eclaire ACL 16mm camera. This camera loaded DIFFERENTLY that the other film cameras...and I just wasn't paying too close attention. ANYWAY, long story short, I shot the ENTIRE 4 days only to find out that I shot through the base of the film...the back. I didn't expose the emultion, but the plastic backing it resided on, resulting in a deep red, out of focus image. We had to re-shoot the entire film.
If FCP is your only editing option, you might be faced with a similar problem...the need to re-shoot. But if I were you, I'd try to track down an Avid and either use it, or have the people import the footage and lay it to DVCPRO HD tape, and use that tape as your master.

  • Compatibility OK between Air TV and TV PANASONIC TX-L55DT60E LED 3D : is it OK before I Buy ? Thanks.

Hi, I would verify the compatibility between the Air TV and the Panasonic TX-L55DT60E LED 3D ?
Is it OK before I buy ?
    Thanks for your answer,

It has HDMI so should be just fine, be sure to turn off any silly motion settings the TV offers.

  • Help!  Audio for 16mm project, material to FCP and back again to 16mm

I am getting ready to send an AIFF file of the audio I created on FCP, working with video that was created from a 16mm to video transfer at my lab. They tell me the transfer was a non-drop frame transfer. The lab made a digital file from the transfer, which I imported into a FCP project with 23.98 sequence settings.
I want to compare the frame length of my WP to that of my video file so that I can determine how the audio house who will be transferring the AIFF to mag needs to compensate, and I am confused about how to measure the video file's frame length. If the sequence settings are at 23.98 fps, and the project runs from 1:00:05;12 to 1:11:49;08, to determine the frame length should I be assuming there are 24 frames per second or 30?
I don't have access anymore to the FCP so I can't check but a basic question is: if the sequence setting are set to 23.98fps, does that mean the timeline only has 24fps? When I convert at 30fps, my video file is 22 frames longer than my WP...
Thanks for any advice and questions--that all may be explained poorly...

When your project and sequence settings are at 23.98, it is for two main reasons. 1. ou are working with video footage shot at 23.98 and 2. you are working with film (24 fps), which was ultimately telecined to video which runs at 23.98. This is mainly implimented because you plan on either going back to a higher resolution "online" which you will be synching up the timecode with a better quality copy of the tape at a coloring house, or you will be using the edl from the 23.98 sequence to give to a negative cutter, so they can cut the negative correctly according to the timecode and how it links with the keycode.
I assume you are making a final product that will be on celuloid- an actual film print, not a video copy. is this correct?
Please clarify the following: did you shoot on film, get a telecine to a beta or dvcam, do you have a timecode burn-in on the tape and when you captured the clips into final cut, did you utilize Cinema Tools?
If you did run your clips through cinema tools, did you do it correctly (starting the process on the "aa" frame).
Is your project set to 23.98 or just your sequence? when you place captured clips onto the timeline do they have to be rendered? Is this a sync project or was it shot MOS?
And lastly, as I previously asked, are you sending all of your negative, the edl from FCP and the aiff to a negative cutter?

  • FCP and Logic working together

Hi. I would like to know if there's some way of two people working at the same time, in the same project, one editing in FCP and the other doing audio in Logic. I mean, any way of the guy working in Logic being able to update his project with the changes made in FCP?
Someone told me this would be possible with EDL or XML, but i don't know anything about that stuff. I tried exporting a xml from FCP to Logic, but the automation is all wrong and every track is assigned to the same output...
    Any help with this issues?
    Thanks,
    LR
    P.S.- FCP 6.0.1 and Logic 8 running on a DP 1.8 G5 with 10.4.10

After some tests i found a way of doing what i want in STP with the "conform" function.
Any way of doing it with Logic?
I posted this in the FCP forum, but maybe i should post it on the Logic forum...

  • Can FCP log and transfer footage from the Panasonic full HD 1080p camcorder

Hi, my subject heading says it all. But I have read a review of the current consumer HD camcorders from Panasonic that says they have their own codec, and that it cannot be edited on any software but their own, which is not available in a Mac version... the review was a few months old, though, so hopefully Apple have now put in place updates so that we can ingest footage from this camera...
Does anyone know about this? If not, any idea where I can find out?
Thanks very much for any light on this situation!

Sorry if you didn't know about this, but the review says that when recording at 1080/50p Panasonic uses a proprietory codec... I assumed that would be any model they produce that records at 50p.
The review of the Panasonic HDC-TM700 states "The camcorder uses traditional AVCHD compression for every shooting mode other than the 1080/50p setting. (my emphasis)<
If the reviewer doesn't know, how would we? We're FCP geeks, not universal camera knowledge base wonks.
Research the codec specifically and the camera model you are likely to find some kind of hack or workaround. I have two Panasonic hdx170s and we have absolutely no issues bringing in full 1080 from the P2 cards but most of our stuff is shot 720.

  • Connecting Panasonic HVX200 to FCP to view the color chart realtime

    Dear All,
I want to use the waveform and vectorscope monitors from FCP to test my HVX200 while aiming at a DSC Labs color chart.
Of course, one of the ways is film the chart first, and then Log and Capture the shot to FCP and check the waveform and vectorscope.
But I am thinking if I can use my Mac Book to connect to my HVX200 to view the waveform realtime. Possible? Any suggestion? Any tool needed to connect them?
    Thanks a lot in advance.

  • About the panasonic 750 and FCP express

Hi Al. Finally i got the Panasonic 750. With the blue ray burner and 4GB on the Imac) First video I'll make will be for Australia, so i will work in PAL. My question here it's when I do the export, I'm not sure what settings I have to choose. Interminate code?. DVCPRO PAL ? And the Format is? 720 x 576 PAL? (that's what i have in express) 1920 x1080 (no PAL or Ntsc) What do you recomend me?
    Thanks.

Brands of cameras will yield differing results of White Balance.
FCE has a Color Corrector and also a Paste Atttributes feature.
You tinker with one clip in the CC for the desired look then Copy that clip.
Next step is to select one or more clips and Paste the Attributes.

Details of specific steps are in the FCE manual. It's in PDF form and is available in the FCE menu.

  • FCP and Panasonic AF-hvx-200 & SONY Z1

I am considering buying a Panasonic AG-HVX200 and was wondering if there are any compatibility issues with using it my current workflow with FCP 5. Currently I am shooting with a Sony Z1 HDV camera and Im shooting in HDV mode and then downconverting that into a SD DV-Pal Comp. I realize that the Panasonic is a different format, I was just wondering if I can combine the two different footages from the two cameras in a single sequence or do they require separate seqences? How can I export the final sequence using these two different types of footage? Any Help would be appreciated.

You don't route thru the deck at all. The only connection you have to the deck is firewire...for capture and output. Unless you want to capture at a different codec like DVCPRO HD, then you connect to the deck via the component cables, or HD SDI if the deck sports that (which I doubt it does).
Monitoring is done thru the card...typically on an HD monitor, but it can downconvert to an SD one as well. But if you want to do any sort of color correction and see what it REALLY looks like, you need a professional HD monitor. One from Best Buy won't do. But that is for like broadcast work. Getting an HD monitor to see generally what your image looks like is a good idea. You will need to get one that has Component or composite connections. Or, if you get the MultiBridge Extreme, it has a DVI out that you can then use another Apple 23" or Dell 24" monitor for viewing.
The Intensity is good for going to TVs with the HDMI connection, and capturing from cameras that have HDMI out (not many do).

  • Panasonic HVX200 / DVCPRO HD and 32fps issues

    Hi all,
I'm having some problems shooting and working with 32fps footage in FCP.
The footage was shot at 720P/25PN in Film Mode with a frame rate of 32fps.
However all the footage we've imported into final cut via P2 is coming up as
50fps - and the footage has a number of dead or double frames.
We've been trying to narrow down at what stage in the process the problem
has been introduced or something was done wrong and i just cant figure it out.
I just found this in a apple white paper on P2 camera workflows:
"720pn, is a new native mode. In this mode, only the true frames that were shot are recorded onto the P2 card. Because the P2 card is not tied to a videotape rate, the frames are recorded with no pulldown pattern. This rate also extends the recording time of a P2 card."
Which is what we were shooting in yet i still have a pull down pattern when i try and conform the 32fps footage back to 25fps for editing.
I've been reading manuals and support forums for hours.
Does anyone have any advice or answers for such a problem?

Greetings from NTSC land! Welcome to the forums.
I have shot with the 200 but am no expert. So with that said here we go.
I do not think that it is possible to shoot 32 FPS in 24FPS mode. If you shot 32FPS then what you have is a 50FPS file with pulldown added. You can only shoot 24,oops, I mean 25 FPS natively. I believe that you will have to use Cinema Tools to conform,
BUT, as I said, I am no expert, with any luck Shane will drop by as the resident HVX200 evangelist and expert, and he can really help you!
