  • How do I use external hard drive

how do I use external hard drive and Photos? I keep getting a msg that there is not enough free space on your photo library volume - i even bought 500Gb of space on iCloud.... that didn't even work please help

    1. Drag the library to a volume formatted as Mac OS Extended, launch Photos with the Option key held down, select Other Library, and choose it. Alternatively, drag it to the Photos icon in the Dock.
    2. iCloud storage space is separate from that on the computer.

  • HT203167 Moved iTunes library from one computer to another using external hard drive.  Cannot play many files.  Says they are missing but locates them in an archive file but still won't play them.  Are the files themselves part of the .itl files?

Moved iTunes library from old computer (PC Windows 7) to new (PC Window 8) using external hard drive.  Library listing shows all music but can only play a fraction of it.  On the ones it cannot play it asks to locate, then refers to an archived version (an .itl file), and still cannot play them.  Do I just need to copy the archived .itl over, or is that not where the actual media are (do the actual media files even exist on the new computer?)?  Any advice or information on this would be helpful.

*Also...is there any way I can filter out all the tracks with the ! so I can delete the unplaying copies as they're taking up room in my iTunes? I know how to find duplicates, but then I have to go and delete each one individually...*
    *Thank you!*

my final cut is running extremely slow after having for 6 months.  I use external hard drives and save nothing on my computer.  it takes a long time to render now. do you think something is wrong with computer. took it to mac store but they fail to help me.  I have a 13 inch mac book pro 10.6.8 8gb 2.3 gfz intel core i5

What did Apple tell you about what they did (or did not) find here?
See if working on the main disk is any faster.
USB2 is glacial, as I/O interconnects go.  And USB2 disks have been known to fail, or sometimes to drop back to USB1 speeds, too.  FireWire 800 is substantially faster than USB2, but still not as fast as the internal drive connections can provide.
Put another way, start varying your configuration, and see which configuration changes (still) have the problem, and which don't.

  • Can you use external hard drives with the HP Omni 10 5600US

Since this a Windows tablet, can you use external hard drives with the HP Omni 10 5600US?
I know there is a micro-sd reader for additional storage but can you use the usb for external hard drives like a regular pc?
I tried looking at the spec's for this tablet and it said the usb port was host only. I'm not sure what that means exactly.

Yes you can.  You'll need to purchase a USB OTG (on-the-go) cable.  I recommend using a drive that has its own power supply but I've successfully used small USB powered drives also.

  • How to use external hard drive and iTunes together?

how to use external hard drive and iTunes together?

Yes I did get to that part.... I went trough external to retrive itunes folder... When I selected the folder, it said that it was locked, choose another folder... I then went to my external again to my itunes folder and and used command I to see if folder was locked and it wasn't.... it was suggested on another forum to reboot.. which I did and still same problem... All I want to do is link my external hard drive that has my itunes playlist from another Mac to my new one.. and to also use the external as the main source for adding new songs to my playlist...

  • How do I install Canoscan film scanner on macbook using external disc drive?

How do I install a CanoScan film scanner using external disc drive ?

sorry, not being very clear. I have the scanner and am trying to instal the operating  programme onto my new macbook. It was fine on my 6 year old one! I put the setup disc in the external drive. I can now get it to load 80% but it then stops. I have then tried to eject the disc - it won't let me as it says it is still setting up - but after 2 hours still says the same and clearly is doing nothing. I can't quit the setup programme - the only way I finally managed to quit was to to force quit the computer to shutdown and then when I start up again I can eject the disc.
Any idea how I make it load the 20% of the setup that it is currently refusing to do?

    What is ude?
How is it connected?  firewire or usb?
When connected it should appear in system profiler.
blue apple > about this mac > more info button. Click on the hardware line. It has a little triangle in front of the work hardware.
    look for firewire or usb.

Looking to move data from OSX 9 to Mountain Lion using external hard drive?

Thanks.  I'd like to get rid of this OSX 9 after retrieving a few files.  If I wanted to erase it's hard drive before I do so, would powering off then on again and immediately start tapping the F10 button do the trick as it does with a PC?

To use Disk Utilities, attach the drive, open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utilities and then highlight the LaCie drive in the left panel of the DU window.  In the right panel, choose the Partition button top center of the pane.  Then decide how many partitions you want on the drive, one is just fine.
Then choose the format, the default is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) which is prefered.
Then name the partition or drive.
Then choose the partition table, the default is GUID which is prefered.
Then Apply and you will get to confirm that you want to erase and format the drive.
Quit DU and you are ready to go.

  • External FW800 drive as main drive...Possible?

I was wondering if it is possible to run your computer off of an external fw800 drive, all the time. that should give your computer a huge jump in speed, right??
If it is possible, could you just set up a Mirror RAID configuration with 2 external drives thus backing everything up?
    Dual 2.5 G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   4.5 gigs ram

    Hi Raynor;
Mirror RAID is not a good solution for backup. What it does is it provides protection from the failure of a disk.
The reason I say it is a good backup solution is say you have an application that has a bunch of files opened. The application aborts and takes the files with it when it goes down. How can you recover? You can because the application will take the files off both disks because they are mirrored.
Hence even if disks are mirrored, it is still necessary to back up the data from the mirrored RAID array.

  • Using time capsule to backup FCP files on External Lacie drives

Has anyone done this with any measure of success? I have my FCP projects on 3 to 4 external Lacie drives and I want to back them up onto my 1 TB TC. It seems TC only backs up the internal HD and not external HD's. Is my only option to drag the data onto TC without any hope of a regular back up?
    Any suggestions would be helpful
    Thanks

Unfortunately I won't be able to tell you too much about time machine. I don't use it. I use another utility to clone my internal HD once a day. I use Carbon Copy Cloner which is scheduled to do an "incremental backup" (only what's changed since the last sync) every day at 4 pm. You could do this same sort of thing via Time Machine. It's just a slightly different paradigm as far as back up strategies go. So it's sort of an either/or: Time Machine vs. CCC.
Then, you'd use ChronoSync to handle the external to Time Capsule. Actually you could use ChronoSync to do the internal to Time Capsule as long as you're, basically telling it to, "make this folder look just like 'this other' folder". ChronoSync can do it all as long as you're NOT talking about making and preserving bootable clones. If you're only trying to do a bunch of "mirroring" then ChronoSync could be "one-stop-shopping".
    Hope that makes sense.
Not sure about "drobo"? Google search leads me to believe it's an external Hard Drive? If so, no. I haven't used it. But there's no reason why ChronoSync wouldn't talk to it and function just fine.

  • Best Option to Improve Computer Speed Using External Hard Drive?

    Hi!
My eMac's 80 gig hard drive is full - mainly due to music, movies and photos - so it is slow and I can't add new media. I cloned the whole hard drive to a 1TB external drive. The computer boots from the external drive. The hard drive is connected to the computer via a FireWire 800 to Firewire 400 adapter cable. I am running Leopard. My RAM is maxed out.
When I boot from the external HD, I seem to get a boost in performance but this seem intermittent and/or not substantial. I have not tested it with a stop watch yet.
I want to get the best performance from my machine. Please help me with the best option. What sounds best?
    1) Forget about cloning. Copy my music, movies and pictures to the external hard drive. Delete these media files from the original eMac to free up space. Run the eMac from the internal drive and access these files from the external drive.
    2) Boot from the cloned external hard drive and use computer like that.
    3) Will it help if the internal eMac HD is not so full? Does this matter if I am booting up from an external drive? Should I delete most or all files from the internal eMac HD and then boot the computer from the EXTERNAL drive? Would this speed things up?
    4) I am open to other suggestions.
The only reason I would not prefer option #2 is that I like to keep all my files on the same drive for backup purposes. I use Time Machine.
    Thanks!

Your Mac will run best and fastest if you run from the internal HD -- it's much faster than an external HD.
And it's best to keep at least 15% free on it; as your startup drive gets more full, your Mac will slow down. Just how much and when depends on a lot of things, but if it gets over 95% or so, it may get very sluggish, apps may hang or crash, data may be corrupted or lost, etc.
So your best bet would be a larger HD in your Mac. I don't know if that's possible or how much it would cost.
Second best would be to put selected data on an external HD, preferably not the one you use for Time Machine. As long as you format that HD for a Mac, Time Machine can back it up, along with your internal HD.
Put Music on the external for sure, and things like documents.
Photos and Video, maybe. Editing will be much slower on a F/W disk than your internal. So it might make sense to do editing on the internal, then put completed video on the external. You'll have to figure that out depending on what you're doing and how.

  • A zillion questions about setting up and using external hard drive

Hello. I recently purchased a Cavalry 440GB CACE USB/FW800 7200 RPM 3.5 in Mac Formatted hard drive. My Mac is a Power PC G4 using OS X 10.2.8.
After much back and forth with the Cavalry support desk, I was able to connect it to my Mac. (The USB cable included was not compatible--fortunately, my printer cable was.)
Through Disk Utility I see that my Mac is detecting the hard drive, but there's no icon on my desktop. My questions are as follows:
    1. How do I get the icon on my desktop?
    2. It was suggested on this board to partition the hard drive. What exactly is partitioning, and is it necessary?
    3. If I do partition the hard drive, into how many partitions should I make it?
    4. Once the number of partitions is set, can that number be changed? In other words, can it be repartioned without erasing anything?
    5. My main purpose for getting the external hard drive is to move all my movies off my Mac. I'm sure I will want to back up other files as well. Should I create one partition for all the movies, and one for photos, one for files, etc.?
    6. Once I get the icon on my desktop, is transferring files as simple as dragging the files onto the icon?
    7. Once I move files to the hard drive, is it simple to move them back to the Mac if I need to use them again?
OK, that's all for now. I appreciate your patience in dealing with all my questions! Thanks.

    Hello,
I'll try my best on the first seven. The remaining zillion minus seven questions will have to wait!
    1. If the drive really is Mac-formatted it should just appear. Firstly check that hard disks are set to appear on the desktop. In the Finder go to Finder > Preferences... >General tab and ensure that the box to show hard disks on the desktop is checked. If that doesn't work go to Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities >Disk Utility. Select the drive in the left hand pane and then click on the "Erase" tab. Erase the disk and ensure the format is "Mac OS Extended (with Journalling)".
    2. Partitioning is splitting the physically drive into two or more volumes. This will allow you to compartmentalise your data. You will have two or more icons appear on the desktop if you do partition. Although they are on the same physical disk you will be limited on each of the volumes to the size you set at the time of partitioning. If you do partition the drive be sure to use the "Apple Partition Map" not "GUID Partition Map". The latter is for Intel Macs.
    3. Whatever you want. My experience is that too many partitions and you loose flexibility in your storage space. Personally on my external drive I have a partition that is exactly the same size as my internal hard drive. I then use that to do a regular clone backup. I then have a second partition for general use. This means I can put files on the external but still guarantee I have enough spare to backup fully.
    4. No. Not without third party tools.
    5. As I said above, in my opinion the best use is to create a partition for backup and a partition for all other use.
    6. Yes absolutely. However if you plan on moving libraries like iTunes or iPhoto then you'll need to show the applications where the libraries are again.
    7. Yes.
    Some extra pointers:
    A. Use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup your internal drive to the external. Clones are fantastic backups as even if the internal drive bursts into flames you will have an identical copy of all user data and settings: http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html (scroll to the very bottom for the version suitable for 10.2.8).
    B. Don't use USB to connect the hard drive it's not very fast. Firewire 400 is significantly faster and will allow the iMac to be booted from the external drive in an emergency (USB will not boot a G4 Mac).
    Hope that helps a little.

  • Using External Hard Drives...

How many external hard drives can be connected to FCP? I am NOT asking how many can be connected at one time.
In the scratch disc section, I have my external set to capture video/audio and to save project files and self contained movie files and other files pertaining to my projects. For the most part this drive stays at home since it needs AC power to run.
Now when I am on the road traveling and want to use a whole seperate drive to capture to how do I go about setting that one up?
I tried doing this a few weeks ago and it wouldn't work. FCP wouldn't allow me to set up the new external hard drive as a scratch disc until I cleared out the drive I use at home which I thought was pretty odd since there are several options where I could add additional external drives.

Ok understand that but let me ask you this. I have a Lacie external drive that I use to capture and save files while I am working at home. I can take it with me but would need AC power. Now I want to get one those 500 GB (pocket drives) that run off USB that I can use while I am traveling (on the plane or whatever). Do I just go to my Scratch Disc option and list the "travel drive"? Does that drive have to be hooked up to the computer when I am setting it up?
So in a nutshell, I would want a drive to use at home and another when I am traveling but have them both listed in my scratch disc section. When I tried this 2 weeks ago, I had to clear my other external drive from the list before I could set up the new drive.
