FCP (studio):  imac vs. powermac

I am purchasing a new mac. I know using a powermac will be better, but for the price will I really see that big of a difference using the iMac(2.1) vs. the dual core 2.0? and, will the standared graphics cards offered be much different? thanks for the help!!
  Mac OS X (10.2.x)

FCP will run on either, but if speed has any weight in your decision making, go with the faster machine. The Power Mac has always been the multi-media design workhorse, and while the iMac may reflect a few of it's attributes, it isn't the same machine.
Having said that, I have edited on an eMac, an iBook, a Powermac G3, G4, and G5- but the faster machine always gets the job done... faster! The way I fugure it, a cheaper computer lowers my overhead, so I can charge less- but if I bill by the hour am I really saving the client any $? Also, if you are thinking of doing multiple/long projects, you will want expandability. My system software (FCP Studio, Dreamweaver, Adobe, etc.) takes up nearly half of my 150GB system drive, and my 150GB scratch drive is almost always full, and in turn overflows onto my 300GB external drive. If that isn't enough, I can easily order a few 250GB HDs and have them installed in less then five minutes due to the nature of the powermac- something I can't do with an iMac. Worth thinking about...

  • New mac mini and imac vs powermac G5 running FCP studio

I want to compare running the FCP suite on the new max minis and imacs that came out today vs what I am currently using:
Currently I am running FCP Studio on a Powermac G5 dual 2GHz with one gig of ram. I believe the frontside bus is 1GHz. I believe the stock video card isan ATI Radeon 9600 Pro (AGP 8X Pro) video card with 64 MB of DDR SDRAM.
With this being said, is it safe to assume that the new entry level mac mini would surpass my G5 in terms of performnce in both video (NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with128MB or 256MB of shared DDR3) memory processing (intel core2 duo 2GHz)?
If not would the two low end Imacs (using NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256MB of shared DDR3 memory) and processing power handle FCP studio better than my current powermac G5 setup listed above?
I am wondering because I spoke to a apple sales person who transfered me to a system engineer that said I'd have a slow time rendering video on FCP with the mac minis as well as the 2 low end imacs. This may be but Im wondering if it is still better than what I am using
I appreciate your opinions, but please only answer if you really know,
    Thanks!

For FCP/FCS I would not save on anything but will get the max what my budget allow. You will be always doing more and the workflow in FCS will entice you to open almost all apps in FCS concurrently to make use of the advanced features. I think that the new iMac are powerful enough to handle FCS, but once again, the extra dollars will save you alot of pain. FCS is a pro app and is not to be underestimated. Good luck.

  • Uninstall FCP Studio?

    Greetings,
I am selling my powerbook and want to uninstall FCP studio so I can put it on my new Desktop.
(I did not have any projects on the machine- so I did not need to do any back-up.)
I removed all FCP folders from finder and trashed them.
Is this all I need to do?
    It's my understanding that you can only run FCP on one machine at a time so;
When I go to re install FCP Studio onto the powermac- how does it know that I have uninstalled. off the powerbook?
    Thanks

  • IMac vs Powermac for FCP

I am debating between an iMac and PowerMac for FCP editing. I am primarily a shooter but would like to offer editing to clients as well. Don't anticipate anything to graphics or effects intensive. For fairly simple editing does the PowerMac have a huge ($1500) advantage over the top of the line iMac?

    iMac:
DV, HDV, DVCPRO HD (possibly) and maybe AVCHD only. Those are the ONLY formats you can edit. I say possibly with DVCPRO HD because the ONLY drives you can use on an iMac are firewire drives. Those are fine for DVCPRO HD (Firewire 800 required), but only for working with P2 DVCPRO HD...nothing from tape. You only have one firewire bus, so capturing using that bus for the camera, AND for the drive is sketchy. Will work most of the time, but not all of the time. Forget Uncompressed SD or HD...not gonna work. The ONLY thing you can upgrade is the RAM...that's it. So Motion will work fine, but not optimally with the graphics card already in place.
    Mac Pro: great expandibility
YOu can install different graphics cards, install capture cards for working with uncompressed HD and SD...and can install eSATA cards for working with faster drives. It comes with 4 internal drive slots, three empty, so that you can install fast drives internally that will work with uncompressed SD and DVCPRO HD and ProRes (ProRes on the iMac will be iffy).
Mac Pro is a professional machine, and iMac is a consumer machine. If you work with DV and HDV only, and only need firewire drives, it should be fine. But that's about all you can do with it.

  • Best minimum iMac for running FCP Studio

A client of mine has hundreds of hours of tapes\film she wants to turn into a film. I want to set her up with an 'inexpensive' iMac powerful enough to run FCP Studio ...
I want to transfer (up-rez) all her footage to an HD ProRes format (not sure which yet), so she will be working in HD.
She needs to be able to view her footage and rough cut it into manageable chunks. Then I'll help her with the editing ... right up to final post-production, at which point we will move it into my studio which has all the bells and whistles.
So I'm looking for just enough power to capture all the footage, to work in HD, but not so much that she goes broke setting up an edit suite she may only use for this one film.
    All ears,
    Ben

Check the minimum system requirements for FCP Studio. That will tell you what minimum hardware is required to use it. According to the Apple site:
*Minimum System Requirements to Install All Applications*
Mac computer with an Intel processor
1GB of RAM (2GB of RAM recommended for working with compressed HD and uncompressed SD sources; 4GB of RAM recommended for working with uncompressed HD sources)
ATI or NVIDIA graphics processor (integrated Intel graphics processors not supported)
    128MB of VRAM
Display with 1280-by-800 resolution or higher
Mac OS X v10.5.6 or later
    QuickTime 7.6 or later
    DVD drive for installation

  • Imac for FCP studio

Is anybody using an imac to run FCP studio out there? I wanted some opinions on getting an imac for my second computer at home to edit with FCP studio. I have a macpro in the edit bay at work for running motion as well as using it for rendering and the heavy stuff. I just want to be able to run FCP studio smoothly at home for fine tuning, sound editing and rough cutting projects. I have a couple of external hard drives so storage won't be an issue. I just wanted some input, what works/what dosen't, etc.before I buy.
    thanks in advance.

Been running FCP Studio, Logic Pro, Reason, After Effects, Photoshop, and everything else I can stuff on my hard drive on a refurbished i5 27" imac. The machine will be a year old in April. No problems at all....that's only because I got Applecare when I bought it It's a beautiful machine.

  • External Hard Drive for PowerMac G5 for use with FCP Studio

    Hello,
I'd greatly appreciate any recommendation for an external hard drive for a PowerMac G5 for use with FCP Studio.
    Thanks.
    -graziemile

We see alot of Lacie issues here and elsewhere.
Drives fail... period. I believe you hear more about Lacie drives failing because they sell a ton more of them than many other suppliers. I've got 8 of em sitting right here on the desk and two more at the second station. I've lost one since I started using them years ago (and it had problems right out of the box) and I use them pretty heavy.
I understand that they use several different brands of drives in their enclosures, but from my experience they must have pretty good QC standards for what they package.
The guy said the G Techs were a little overkill for his needs. Lacie doesn't pay me. But if someone asks "how are Lacies?" I'll tell them they've been great for me and many others I know, especially if your requirements are capturing DV.
In five years, I ain't heard anybody say anything about it.
As for FCP. I love it! In 20 years of business, it's probably the purchase that's given me the most bang for my buck. But if you haven't heard people knock it, you've never met an Avid zelot, bruhhhhh, just the thought gives me shivers.
The drives X mentioned are designed for video work.
What Studio said, well he gives out some of the best advice on this board
(and maybe the most! ) and my reply to his post... that's why I used the little smiley face. No offence intended X.
I only meant to say that, in a world where software like FCP can do what it does at the price it does it, and drives like Lacie and G Tech can give you the storage they do for the price they do, the line between consumer and professional products is easily blurred.

  • FCP Studio 3 install on Power Mac G5

Anyone has tried to install the new FCP Studio 3 on a Power Mac G5 Quad computer? I have a PowerMac G5 Quad with FCP Studio 2 and want to find out wether I can upgrade to FCP Studio 3 or not?
    Thanks,
    r

Yes a shame about the G5 I had one until it went POP at the begining of the year.
Remember that any project created in FCP7 will not open in FCP6.
and once a FCP6 project is updated and saved in FCP7 it won't go back- so create a duplicate project.
have been playing with FCS3 for a couple of days now it's very good.

  • Is the latest version of FCP studio compatible with Radeon X1600 graphics..

I read under the requirements that the latest version of FCP studio is not compatible with "integrated graphics cards"... what does that mean to me with an iMac that has a Radeon X1600 with 128MB and a bus type PCIe? Will it work?
    Thanks!

Final Cut Studio 2 (with FCP 6) runs just fine on my 2.0 GHz 20" iMac CD, which has a 128 MB ATI Radeon X1600 with an external display (1280x1024) connected via DVI.

  • FCP Studio & Snow leopard

I have the original Final Cut Studio (Version 1.0.1) that I bought when I had a G5 powerpc iMac. I have since upgraded to an Intel iMac, and just installed Snow Leopard. Motion wouldn't launch at all, so I uninstalled the entire suite with FCS Remover. Now I can't install FCP Studio at all. It says "Your computer does not have the hardware required to run this software. See the Read Me for details."
Is this because the software is so old? Do I need to buy the new $300 FCP upgrade? Thanks in advance.

You need to buy the upgrade. That version of FCS was designed for the PowerPC processor machines. When Apple moved to Intel, the application was re-written to work with those processors. The older version won't work with the new processors.

  • FCP Studio on a Mac Mini

I am using FCP 4.5HD on a Mac Mini with 1GB of RAM and an external 7200 RPM Firewire drive.
Performance isn't too shabby for the projects I've been working on, even tho it isn't a G5.
I am seeing some good prices for FCP Studio, but I wonder if upgrading will really provide me with a benefit above and beyond FCP 4.5?
Any thoughts? Will my work environment be more feature-packed and efficient, or will the Mini choke on the newer software, obviously intended for G5s?
    thank you!
    r

    ray:
i was running FCP 5 on my iBook with a 1GHz G4 and 1.25GB of ram. here were my experiences:
    1. i was able to run FPC with no problems. real-time effects will be available as processor horsepower permits. i even did some multi-cam editing wtih 2 video sources. i was able to log and capture MiniDV footage to both the internal hard drive and an external hard drive.
    2. DVD Studio Pro works just fine for designing DVDs and i would do some layouts, then reconnect media on my G5 and let it render all the MPEG-2, then burn (the iBook also didn't have a DVD burner)
    3. Motion does not run, the video hardware just doesn't support it. Your mini will probably be the same.
    4. Soundtrack Pro runs great. i've used the iBook in the field at live (wedding) events to record audio of musicians (about 20 mins continuously). i've also used the iBook as a portable audio editing station, just plug in some good headphones and you're ready to go.
    5. LiveType runs OK, albeit a little slow on the rendering and such, but its workable if you're willing to re-render a lot.
the MacMini you're using will probably be similar in many respects to my iBook since they both use notebook hard drives, but you've got a good external FW hard drive to make up for any deficiencies there. Your G4 chip is probably a good 25-50% faster than mine, so rendering times might not be too bad.
    good luck!

  • Is this Mac ok for work with FCP Studio 5.1?

    Hi all,
in the next few weeks i'm hoping to make the change from PC to Mac based editing, using FCP Studio 5.1. This is what i'm thinking of buying:
imac 24" TFT (this will show HD won't it?), 2.33Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 667 DDR2 RAM, Nvidia GeForce 7600GT 256MB, 250GB Hard Drive, DVD Writer.
Will this run FCP Studio 5.1 smoothly?
    Many thanks, mat.
ps. what is the deal with FCP 6? Is it set for release soon? If so, i may put off the move until then.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    These specs suggest it should:

  • FCP Studio 2 wont respond after archive and instal... please help

Hi I have been on the imac forum with the first half of this problem. Ill start from the beginning to give you some background.
I did a routine apple software update and when restarting my computer it got stuck on the blue screen and would go no further. After trying everything I had to do an Archive and Instal. This worked and I can now fully boot up.
However, after this process my FCP S2 will not work. When I click on any of the FCP S2 icons, they bounce and nothing else happens. It does not matter if I do this from the apps folder or on the desk top. The strange thing is that DVD Studio will open and works like normal.
Is there anything I can do to get my FCP S2 programs to work again and if not how should I go about reinstalling so I will not lose all my projects. What is the proper procedure for deletion and reinstallation.
Thanks so much for your time

backup project and all other work files
clean install Mac OS (this wipes the hard drive clean)
install from installation discs FCP Studio
    reinstate the project files

  • FCP Studio 2 unexpectedly quits on save

I've been using FCP Studio 2 for some time. Recently Livetype, Motion and DVD Studio suddenly started to expectedly quit when saving. FCP itself seems ok.
    I've:
         • repaired permissions
         • trashed prefs
         • created a new user account
         • safe boot
         • reinstalled FCP Studio 2  ***I thought I had removed all components and pref files prior to reinstall, but I apparently did not. The registration info was               retained
         • all software on iMac is up to date
Not really interested in trying to reinstall OS X at this point. Any other suggestions? I am including some of the reports from the quits.

I did try Crash Analyzer after posting, and it pointed to the ProKit is a probable issue. My guess is that a relatively recent Software Update is causing the issue.
I checked the Downloads section on Apple's site, which lists version 7.0 is the latest download for 10.6. Tried to install it, but an alert stated that a newer version is present.
So, I guess I need to try to downgrade somehow to a prior version of ProKit. Don't know how, or which one will do the trick for Studio 2!
