FCP Upgrade:  Books

I'm upgrading Final Cut Studio 1 to Final Cut Studio 2, and I have a couple of questions about the documentation supplied with the upgrade.
First, I'm a little surprised to see that, other than one small book on the new application, Color, all of the books appear to be entirely about Final Cut Pro. I don't see any books on the new features of, for example, Motion 3. (Yes, this definitely is a Final Cut Studio upgrade.)
Second, what should we do with the old documentation? That is, should we toss the old books about Final Cut Pro and replace them with the new ones, and keep the rest? Do we keep all of the books?

Unfortunately, I don't have a whole lot of room in my studio, so I think I'll chuck the old Final Cut Pro printed books, and replace them with the new ones, but keep the other (e.g., Motion-related) printed books. I think I'll mostly be working with the PDFs anyway.
By the way, I ran into another problem during the installation: After getting the installation going with the first FCP disk, it told me to insert the Audio Content 1 disk. Fine, except that it didn't eject the first disk! I tried several ways to try coerce it to eject the disk, but I couldn't find any. Do any of you know of any means to force it to eject a CD when an installation script is clearly just plain confused?
I've managed to get around the first such request for a new disk by hooking up my old computer in Target-disk mode, and putting into to into its DVD drive. Hopefully when it's done it will eject that disk from that drive! If not, it apparently wants one drive per installation disk! Unfortunately, target-mode seems to be working kinda slowly...

  • How to do FCP upgrade from 4.1.1 to 6

Am using FCP 4.1.1 on G4 dual proc mirror door and G4 powerbook. As I have been out of the country without access to techie stuff, I need to know if it is possible to upgrade from FCP 4.1.1 to FCP 6 utilizing the Studio 2 upgrade.
Am considering putting FCP on both an old machine plus a new Macbook Pro.
I am unfortunately not a geek, but just want to use the software once the installation challenge is met so please give me simple advice to follow step by step. Also have original FCP versions all the way back to V1, so would I need to load that disk and all other versions forward? Also would the V1 need to be installed with OS 9 open if the process needs to start there? Your help is much appreciated.

You will need to purchase the $699 "Upgrade from Final Cut Pro or Production Suite". When installing, it will ask for the serial number from any full retail version of Final Cut Pro (not academic and not an upgrade to a previous version). You won't need the discs loaded or installed, just the serial number. Your FCP 1.0 number should work.

  • Upgrade to G5 and FCP 5 from a series of FCP upgrades, 1 through 4

I will be upgrading to FCP 5 on a new G5. I bought FCP 1.1, and have steadily upgraded to FCP 2, 3 and 4. Since the new G5 will NOT have OS9, and since I would need OS9 to install FCP 1.1 in order to upgrade to 2, 3, 4, etc., will I be forced to buy a FULL version of FCP 5, rather than simply upgrading? Has anyone else worked around this problem? Thanks, Michael Lengel

If you've bought the Final Cut Studio Upgrade, then
you'll need the serial numbers for all the apps that
    were in Produciton Suite.
Production Suite consisted of FCP HD, Motion 1, DVDSP
    3.
An FCP 1, 2, or 3 serial number will not allow an
upgrade to Final Cut Studio. Only an FCP HD serial
number (which is the same as an FCP 4 serial number.)
I'm afraid this is not entirely accurate, Brian.
If you're buying the $499 FC Studio upgrade (aka 'from Production Suite'), then yes, you'll need to provide the serial numbers for the 3 apps.
However, if you're buying the $699 FC Studio upgrade (aka 'from any verision of FCP'), then all you'll need to provide is your original, standalone FCP serial number.
In my case, was the latter (upgrade from FCP) and my original serial number is from FCP 3. Since I did an erase and install of Tiger prior to installing FC Studio (aka no FCP on my system, just like a fresh G5), I was only asked for my FCP serial number. I plugged in my FCP 3 SN and was good to go.
Of course, my original reply reflected the fact that Michael only mentions upgrading to FCP 5. (You're saying that path is different than upgrading to Studio, Brian?)

  • Best FCP training book?

    HI there,
I'm using and learning FCP, but I know I'm missing lots.
It's FCP 7 (came with FCS 3, and it included just a tiny little manual).
I know there are various books out there designed to help people like me learn my way around this app, and show me some neat short-cuts, etc., but I'm wondering if the FCP cognoscenti can recommend one in particular.
    Thanks in advance, Malcolm

    Hi Malcolm
I would highly recommend the Diana Weynand books for Final Cut Pro, and as it's already been pointed out she does have the new one for FCP 7 out.
If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch I would also recommend the app titled iKeysToGo also developed by Weynand.com. It is a learning that puts the complete list of Final Cut Pro 7 commands in the palm of your hands! It's only $2.99 and is most used apps I have in my arsenal. Here is the link at Weynand.com:

  • FCP Upgrade from FCS to cater for QT7.6

I'm in the UK using PAL
I've dropped a clanger recently and uprated to QT7.6 from 7.2 and can no longer log and capture any stuff from video tapes (analogue) yet I have a local demand for quite a lot of transferring from tapes still to be done. QT7.6 is the culprit. I can't get rid of it to downgrade. If I can move up instead and once again log and capture analogue it's the way for me to go. If I upgrade my FCP 5.1.4, wiil l then be able to use my analogue log and capture for editing purposes again?
I was gong to trash everything and re-install but if I can gain everything back by upgrading, I'll do it that way. I'm already furious at being seemingly cheated by Apple in obeying its advising all QT7 users to uprate to 7.6 and don't wish to further aggravate my problem with yet more errors ....
Anyone using a higher grade of FCP and also doing log and capture of analogue stuff. All help needed here. Ta!

**** - **** - **** ... I erased everything and reinstalled OSX then tried to install my Final Cut Studio upgrade. It wouldn't accept it for installing without the serial numbers of the previous FCPs (1,2 and 3) that I USED to have but which disappeared in the direction of a grandson ... The grand idea was to in any case re-install the FCS from the Lacie but it won't go. Just flashes to indicate beginning to open up but that's all. I realise that I should perhaps have reinstalled the FCS without installing OSX first, it having OS 4.7 which installed earlier, albeit without wroking properly.
What a mess I'm having with Mail, too! I've gone onto Virgin.net and am using its mail facility in the absence of the Mac one which which incessantly asks for a proper pasword. At the moment, Apple is definitelyout of favour!
I can get FCP 5.1.4 to make a showing within the Lacie but it won't operate in the fresh set-up I've done on my startup drive - and of course, it is suffering from not being able to log and capture analogue stuff, the reason for all this mess in the first place.
Help if possible would be most appreciated.

  • FCP upgrade question

When purchasing an upgrade for FCP, does the previous version of the software need to be installed on the computer, or is just the serial number enough? I just got a new G5, and my old FCP isn't compatible with Tiger, so it won't be on the new system when I set it up and upgrade...

I believe the installer requests both the previous version serial number, and the new one for qualifying upgrades

  • FCP Upgrade

ok my post got removed because apple said it was speculative. i have no idea what that was about so i'll rephrase my question:
so i am very new to the apple/mac ecosystem and final cut pro. current version is fcpx so i am assuming it is fcp 10. from previous versions, did y'all like buy everytime a new fcp comes out? like if you had fcp 7, did you buy fcp 8, fcp 9, fcp 10 separately to upgrade your current fcp version? or was it a free upgrade from like fcp 9 to fcp 10? thanks

    av_l_nch3 wrote:
…  i'm guessing fcp7 is also discontinued since fcpx is the only one in the apple website.
this is correct - the whole FinalcutPro7-suite of apps (+DVDSP, +Soundtrack) is obsolete.

There were some major upgrades in the past, which carry-on the name of an app, but were completely re-built from scratch, such as iMovie, Logic - and FinalCut.

    e.g. there was iMovieHD6, no 7, but iMovie08 - which internally had the version number 7… -

  • FCP upgrade with Tiger

    Mark (or whoever can help)
I have FCP 4 and I am having the same freeze on capture issues that first appeared when I upgraded to Tiger. Will I be able to download a fix for this (as I have FCP, not version 5.)

#45 - FCP 4.5 and Mac OS 10.4.9 - how to get it working again
Shane's Stock Answer #45 - How to get FCP 4.5 working again under Mac OS 10.4.9
Apple's solution: Archive and install the OS again, this time updating only to 10.4.8.
Another COOL solution: Samba2007 posted that a friend solved the FCP 4.5 + OSX 10.4.9 capture issue adding the Capture Scratch folder to the Privacy of Spotlight in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4417320#4417320
OlSchoolCutter tried with SUCCESS (see post in that thread).
Then follow these stesp and try (it's free!):
    1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    2. From the View menu, choose Spotlight.
    3. Click the Privacy tab to reveal the areas that Spotlight will not index.
    4. In the Finder, open your "Final Cut Pro Documents" folder.
    5. Drag the Capture Scratch folder into Spotlight's list.

  • To install Livetype with FCP upgrade...

I have live type data from a previous install of Final Cut Pro 4.5.
now i'm upgrading to FCP Studio and Live type is bundled. there's 12 Gigs of data! should I uninstall the old data from the Library/Application Support/Live Type folder first (theres 8 G of data in there! my hard drive might choke!

The Hardware test seems a bit scary.... don't know what the error message means, but you don't have enough graphics card for sure.
To run it all you need at least one of these cards:
ATI Radeon 9800, 9700 Pro, 9600 XT, or 9600 Pro
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 or 9600
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT, 7300 GT, 6600, 6600 LE, FX Go5200, or FX 5200 Ultra
For 16- and 32-bit rendering: a graphics card with at least 128MB of VRAM
Further, if it were me, I'd perform and erase and install of Tiger, update it, then install the studio and run software update again. Of course this will erase your startup disk, so be sure to backup what you want to keep first.
The motherboard error though leads me to think that it's probably time to upgrade your Mac all together. Might have an authorized repair center look at it, but I'm seeing dual G5's selling on ebay for less than what a logic board and graphics card would probably cost for your G4.... sorry to be the bearer of bad news sort of, but hey, a faster Mac with more RAM would make your life a lot better with FCS.
I'd want at least a dual G5... a new quad machine would really make things sing... if you're a pro, surely by now you've amortized out that G4, right?
I also think the minimum RAM you should be running is 4 gigs. FCS 2 is one demanding set of apps... Not to say you can't get your machine to run it, you should be able to, but if you're a working pro, it's time to upgrade it all I think.

  • Purchasing FCP upgrade in US when FCP 5 was purchased in Hong Kong

This may be a dumb question, but I have a friend that wants to buy me an upgrade to Final Cut Pro Studio (I currently have Final Cut Pro 5) in the US. I purchased my copy of FCP in Hong Kong. Will there be any problems with my friend purchasing FCP Studio for me in the US and giving it to me when he visits (I don't live in the US)?

Hi wokboy, I see you just registered here today, so welcome to the Discussions.
Are you referring to Apple's current offer to upgrade (in your case) FCP5 to Final Cut Studio for $99? If that's the case, then you'll first need to send your FCP install disk to your friend, and he will have to send it on with payment and the upgrade form to Apple.
    More info here:http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/
If you use the standard US English version, I don't think it would be a problem.

  • Price for FCP upgrade to new version soon after purchase.

There will be a new version of FCP later this year. I'll wait to buy my first FCP, if the upgrade won't be free in a few months. Does anyone know the pricing policy for full upgrades within a short time after purchase? Thx.

Regarding new releases, here's some news/commentary from about six weeks ago:
    http://9to5mac.com/2013/06/11/apple-confirms-new-version-of-final-cut-pro-x-comi ng-alongside-new-mac-pro-later-this-year/
I was struck by the comment (we'll see how things pan out), "With Apple’s recent campaign to win back skeptical pro users to Final Cut Pro X, we’d imagine the new version of Final Cut Pro X coming later this year will also include a number of other features that pros have been missing since Apple scaled back the software’s feature set with a new design two years ago."

I need to upgrade to FCP 5, I have v4.5.
The $200 price tag is really great.
I usually leapfrog and get every other version.
The $50 crossgrade will be available by end of March.
I'd like to get it but my question is......
when did the last big version of FCP come out and when in the next big one due, I'd like to wait and get that one. Do you think there is a version 5.1 or 5.5 to be released this summer or by the end of the year.
what should I do with all my old versions of FCP, just through them in the trash, too many big honkin boxes accumulating.
    thanks.

then I bought v4.5 upgrade (came in a big black box)
did you buy the production suite version (with Motion and DVDSP)?
The $200 price tag is really great.
The $50 crossgrade will be available by end of March.
uhhh the only one you need is the 199 one
it is an upgrade to STUDIO UNIVERSAL
it IS the crossgrade and upgrade in 1

  • Problem playing with Multicam editing using samples from Tom's FCP 5 book?

I have some media from the DVD accompanying the book Final Cut Pro 5 Editing Workshop.
There are 4 camera angles of a music trio but unfortunately there is only audio on Camera 1.
This means that though I can switch video angles, the audio for about 75% of the final clip is missing.
Is there any way to ensure that the audio is added to all the clips and angles?

There is an excellent podcast tutorial series called "Creative COW Final Cut Help Tutorials Podcast (SD)"
    in the iTunes Store.
The latest three are very in depth concerning the new Multicam in 10.0.3 and address your audio concern and much, much more.
    Can't recommend them enough.

  • FCPS upgrade or full version?

    Hello!
I got Final Cut Studio 2 unused from a friend - I already had Final Cut Production Suite on my Mac installed. After installing it, I had no problems (despite with importing AVCHD 720p/50 clips).
Now I'm wondering, is the FCS2 version I got a full version or an upgrade? In other words, can I get rid of the old Production Suite?
The serial number sticker says: Final Cut Studio 2.0.1 Retail
The sticker on the box says: MA 886 D/A (not sure, the "6" ist hardly readable)
Has anybody an idea how to make sure its not only an upgrade and I will have to keep the old SN?
How do the SN stickers look for known full or upgrade versions?
    Thanks

...oh thanks! Never had that idea before thrillcat O.o
And what will that proof, other than that the final product on my mac will be FCS2? I'm asking if someone can confirm that on an upgrade version the stickers are different.
How hard is it to just answer the question?

  • FCP Upgrade Problem - Quartz Extreme

Help! I've owned FCP for many years, and currently have a MacBook Pro that I've used since the original Intel switchover.
Apple's "Software Update" suggested that I install the Pro Application update the other day, I clicked "OK" and now my FCP won't run any more! I get an error message saying that Final Cut Pro requires Quartz Extreme video.
Why on earth would Apple "auto-update" software (which I paid good money for) such that it is now disabled on my machine? Can this be true? Would Apple really do that? Help!

Well, duh, of course I was the one who clicked "OK".
But the point is that it was Apple's Software Update application which "recommended" that I install an update which now has rendered a $900 application inoperable. All other instances of software updates from Apple (including both manual installers and the Software Update app) detect the hardware and OS specs before "recommending" and installing something which permanently disables the application on my hardware. This is clearly something they missed on this one, and I'd like to know how to get back the software I paid good money for (without re-installing from scratch, which looks like where I'm headed).
So, don't give me this "you're the one who clicked OK" stuff.
