FCS applications MUST be in default location to use Compressor

Hi,
This is not a help request but half a complaint and a half a tip for other users that could experience my own problem.
Until today, I had never been able to use the Export -> Send to Compressor function inside Final Cut Pro 6. Compressor seemed to freeze for a couple of minutes, told me it could not read the Final Cut Pro project to make the preview and, when finalally started, the compression process hanged.
The problem was that I don't usually leave my applications under the default Mac Application Folder. I use dozens of applications and it's a nightmare to find what I need. Instead, I create several subfolders inside the Application folder and, that way, everything is organized, neat and at quick to find.
http://tinyurl.com/6fcvhp <- Screen capture of my Applications folder
Compressor, and all the applications that make use of it, MUST be under the default Mac Application folder or, otherwise, it just won't work. I had the very same problem using Final Cut Server. Until I placed Compressor in its default location I could not create proxy files, transcode or use any other function related to Compressor.
It's the very first time I have seen this behaviour and I think Apple should fix it making Compressor non-location-dependant.
I hope someone will find useful this information
Best regards

Thanks for the idea. I had already thought about using aliases but that wouldn't stop the Application folder showing a looooooooooong list o applications. As I said, having things clear is just a crazy habit of mine. Now that I know the trick I will just "survive" having FCS applications in their default location. I know I'm the only one here doing things differently. It's just that I have never had that problem with any other application and it was turning me crazy.
By the way, if anyone would like to use aliases, using an underscore as the first characters help having things on top of the list. For instance, the alias "_Multimedia" would appear before "Adobe".

• Changing the default location PowerPoint uses for templates

I do not want to use the default location MS Office initially configures for templates that is buried in some obscure folder on a local machine in that only Office know about. Instead want to keep my templates in the same location on a company server
with the rest of my materials so I can access it from my company laptop or from the Virtual machines I am forced to use in other company locations. This way I will have my templates everywhere I work. When I make changes they are available to me everywhere
I work and are not buried in a folder on a laptop or a virtual machine in a conference room half a world away.
MS Word allows users to configure this default location for templates but no where in PowerPoint can I find any way to configure this location. Previously on my laptop I have been able to configure the default PowerPoint template location, I believe, by
setting the location in MS Word; however, this is not happening for me now on the virtual machines I am using when away. I have scoured the Options settings and if it is there it is well hidden.
To make matters worse I am trying to use what PPT is providing to me while I sort this out and when you try to open "My Templates": there is a message that says:
"To add a template to My templates, click the File tab, click Save As, click Trusted Templates, and then save the file as a template."
Of course when I follow these instructions there is no folder named Trusted Templates on the left side of the dialog box. I am not sure why it is so difficult to allow us to configure this ourselves for each program but apparently it is.

Hi,
Please refer to this kb below:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924460/en-us
As mentioned, if you use Word 2007 or Word 2010 to change the location in which your new templates are saved, you also change the location in which all 2007 Office program templates or all 2010 Office program templates are saved.
Office programs use one registry key to record the user templates file location, you can browse to the following path to check if it's recorded:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\General
The user templates location is stored in the
UserTemplates
string value.
If it doesn't exist, try to manually add it, check if this helps. Detailed information can also be found in the kb introduced above.
Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps
carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/en-us

• Lightroom installs to default location despite specific install location set in application manager.

Lightroom keeps installing to the default install location even though I have a specific install location set in the application manager. Is there a fix for this issue?

These days, many people run Windows 7 PC, not Mac. Not anymore, even in the community of users of Adobe.
These days, installing a 64bits version of windows 7 is not only wise, but is mandatory if you buy hi-level CPU.
These days, many people running a Windows 7 Pro 64bits version are likely to have a SSD where the OS is located (I understand that people with Mac computers can have hard times realizing it).
So when we see:
Lightroom, but also Edge Inspect, Edge Code and Edge reflow as well installed in C: despite having changed default location...
Photoshop and Illustrator will be installed both in 32 and 64 bits versions...
months have passed since we yell in users forum
we presume many things... but not that you listen to your customers, nor that Adobe's looking for any solutions... nor that people who test your apps really own a real computer (no: anything running natively MAC OS is not a real computer... it's a toy for hipsters, a start for children or the only way for old people to keep in touch qith reltives via Facebook, but it's not a computer... I run a computer... nothing to compare).
So will we get any answers ?

• Whenever you try to save a PDF file to a location other than the default location ('My Documents'), Firefox freezes & you have to go to the 'Task Manager' to exit Firefox and stop the error, so you can load Firefox again.

Whenever you try to save a PDF file to a location other than the default location ('My Documents'), Firefox freezes & you have to go to the 'Task Manager' to exit Firefox and stop the error. I have Windows XP (Media Center Edition) and all updates (Firefox, Adobe PDF, Microsoft, virus protection, etc) are installed. This has only been a problem since Firefox 4, and isn't a problem in Internet Explorer.

Hi David,
Thank you for your detailed question. It sounds like the real issue is pdf files. Are there any antivirus/firewalls that might be blocking this specific file type? or are there any preferences in your control panel that might be blocking this?
Do you have any stored preferences for PDF files in Firefox?

• How do I change the default locations for the iTunes music and iPhone back-up folders?

My computer's hard drive is partitioned, with one partition having all of the Windows system files, and the other having all of my documents, music, videos, etc. When I installed iTunes, it automatically created its music and iPhone folders on the Windows partition. I've been able to change the default save folders for other programs to the second partition, but I'm having troubles finding this option in iTunes (I even went back and re-installed it to see if I could find it that way, but no dice). Is there a way to change the default folders for the iTunes library and iPhone files? It takes up A LOT of space on my Windows partition, so it would be very great to get that moved over.
Thanks!

You can't selectively move individual folders withing the iTunes folder, but you can move the entire folder to, say, an external dive. To delink the iTunes application to the new library location:
Open iTunes while holding down the Option key (Mac) or Shift key (Windows).
In the resulting dialog, click the Choose Library button.
Select the iTunes folder you moved to the external hard drive.
Click Choose (Mac OS X) or Open (Windows) and then choose the iTunes Library file inside .

• Making itunes recognise an extrenal drive as the default location always

Hi
I am really hoping someone can put me out of my itunes misery. I have been running the following set up for a while now but it is driving me crazy and if anyone has a solution, I would really like to give it a try!
I currently have itunes installed on my Macbook Pro, running 10.5.1. I have set the location of the itunes library in preferences to be my portable usb drive which is connected at the back of my time capsule. Every now and again, I remove the USB Drive and attach it directly to my laptop so that time machine will back it up and any changes I have made. I am totally paranoid about losing my Apple Losless files and it has taken me Months to get to this stage. Its still a work in progress and I have many more CDs to import. I love working this way as I can play music wirelessly to my stereo downstairs using airtunes which works great!
My problem is this. Every time my computer is restarted, I use boot camp, I use DVD Player or sometimes randomly it seems, itunes reverts to the default location for itunes, being Macintosh HD/userS/music/itunes. This means I have to go back to preferences and manually re-point the location to my external USB drive. It's not the biggest problem except it then wants to update itself and run through all of the files again every time this happens. As you can imagine, this takes quite some time with a large library and I am continually adding music and watching DVD's every day.
It's becoming a real pain each time I need to restart or perform one of the above tasks as I have to wait for itunes to update itself. Is this normal? Is it just a fact of Apple life that itunes does not work on an external drive? In which case, most people must run out of hard disc space at some point. Surely people must have better solutions in running their itunes libraries...? I am hoping some of you can share these with me.
I have tried googling this and have tried consolidating my library, (which took a week!)etc but nothing seems to solve this. What I am looking for is some advice either on running a better set up (I am sure what I am doing is probably not the best way of running itunes) or some sort of command in which I can make itunes recognise that my external drive is the default location for my library and not in the users library permanently.
Any help gratefully received. Thanks!
Samantha

No problem what so ever. I am not certain you will gain anything by it, though.

• Can MediaSource display MP3 file name instead of MP3 tag information? ; Playlist default locat

?I am using Creative MediaSource Player 5.0.38 as an MP3 player on my computer:?. Can we get MediaSource to display mp3 file names instead of mp3 tag information when file is being played as part of a Playlist???2. Playlists are stored in this location:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Creative\Media Database\
or if not logged in as Administrator:
C:\Documents and Settings\[name of your account]\Application Data\Creative\Media Database\?Unlike with Creative PlayCenter, default location of Playlists cannot be changed in Windows registry.?Is there any?way to change Playlist default location?
??3. If Shuffle play mode is selected, MediaSource will still always play the first file on the Playlist? and only then switch to shuffle mode. I found a workaround for this because old PlayCenter 2 had this problem, is this a known bug that they still haven't fixed after all these years???Message Edited by c627627 on 04-6-200706:33 PM

Hi,
I understand you want to place description of Content type as refiner in Search Refinement.
Without coding, you may considering adding a column for description and use this column as refiner.

• Where is the default location for the OC4J logs?

Where is the default location for the OC4J logs?

Depends on what variant of the product you are using.
In an Oracle Applicaiton Server environment (ie the one you install versus unzip) the stdout/stderr streams from OC4J are captured in the $ORACLE_HOME/opmn/logs/<group-instance> directory.
If you are using standalone then stdout goes to the console where you started the process.
The logs for the OC4J instance itself are located in $ORACLE_HOME/j2ee/home/log/<instance_group> directory. In this directory you'll see different logs for differet areas of the server. Most of the logs however are captured in the oc4j sub-directory in the log.xml file. Whenever you enable an OC4J component logger in the j2ee-logging.xml file or via ASControl, this is where the logs will end up.
Take a look at the $ORACLE_HOME/j2ee/home/config/j2ee-logging.xml file -- the log handlers will give you some idea on the different log files that are in use.
You can configure your application loggers to also direct their log into this file if you wish. See http://buttso.blogspot.com/2007/09/directing-log-messages-into-oc4j.html for an example.

• How to: Resetting install location back to "Default Location..." (Windows 8)

I recently upgraded my PC and added an SSD as my primary drive. Like most people, I also have a secondary drive for most apps and files. In the Creative Cloud App manager, I changed the Installation location to a directory on my secondary drive. The problem was, Some applications I wanted on my SSD for performance reasons and there was no way to change back to the setting "Default location..." Because CC installs both a 32 bit and 64 bit version of some applications, I wanted to make sure that it put them in the correct "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)" folders. After some poking about in the config files I finally found out how to do it.
(NOTE: The path below is for Windows 8 and possibly Windows 7, for other OS's it will likely be in a similiar path)
Close the Adobe Creative Cloud app (File > Quit)
Open this file in notepad: C:\Users\ExampleUser\AppData\Local\Adobe\OOBE\com.adobe.accc.apps.....prefs
Search through the text untill you find the install location that you set. Mine was "E:\Program Files\"
Delete only that path (leave the <) and then save the file.
Relaunch the Adobe Creative Cloud app
Then check the Install Location in Preferences. It should now be set back to "Default Location..."

For Mac OS X (Yosemite) I found you need to do the following:
1. Quit the Creative Cloud Application in the title bar.
2. Open Activity Monitor, find the Process named "Adobe Desktop Service". Click the stop sign icon with an "x" in it and select Quit to stop this process.
3. Edit the file ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/OOBE/com.adobe.accc.apps.....prefs
a. Same as in the Windows case, find the line with "installLocation" and delete everything containing a file path between the following ">" and "<"
4. Restart Adobe Creative Cloud from /Applications/Adobe Creative Cloud/Adobe Creative Cloud

• Soft Proof Default Location

Photoshop CS3, Mac OS 10.5.2
After I create a custom soft proof I would like it show up in the "View" drop down. Where is the "default" location to save custom soft proofs so that they show up in the drop down menu?
Thanks

When you save a custom proof condition, the .psf file is saved in user/library/application support/adobe/color/proofing. To view using that soft proof, go to View > Proof Setup, and the file you just saved will be at the bottom of that sub-menu.
Hope that helps.

• Default Location of Photos

Novice iPhone G3 user here, my 5-year old deleted several hundred photos from my phone. I had backed up my phone to my MAC two days before this happened--stupid question, where is the default location those images would be?

Did you import the photos with iPhoto if you use iPhoto for importing photos from a digital camera and from your iPhone's Camera Roll and use iPhoto for photo storage and management on your Mac, or with the Image Capture application located in your Applications folder?
Although photos in your iPhone's Camera Roll are included with your iPhone's backup which is updated by iTunes as the first step during the iTunes sync process, it isn't a good idea to depend on your iPhone's backup or on your iPhone alone for this data. Photos in the Camera Roll should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera. You can't access this data direct from your iPhone's backup, but you can try restoring your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup. If you haven't synced your iPhone with iTunes since these photos were deleted from your iPhone, do not sync. When selecting restore, you will be prompted to update your iPhone's backup which you want to decline or these photos will be removed from your iPhone's backup when the backup is updated.

• How do I change default location for file downloads, as in not "C" drive

Unsure where to make to changes so my downloads will go to another hard drive instead of the "C" drive under documents.

ausing Firefox 8.0 with Windows 7 64-bit, I could not locate to area where I change

Any idea where this default is set under this application?

• What is folder q2tw177e.default located inside the profile folder

The application data folder, windows xp, has a folder labeled q2tw177e.default located inside the profile folder. I can find out nothing with this label when searching google. Makes me suspicious about this folder. Does anyone know anything about it. Thanks.

There is nothing to worry about that folder.
That is the actual Firefox Profile Folder that stores your personal data.
There are two of them:
* C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
*C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
The latter is the location used for the browsing cache and a few other files.
See also the about:cache page for the location of the cache.
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

• Apple Works Install Issue;"Default location required for install not found"

I am a new mac user. Just bought a Mac Air. Trying to install Apple Works 6.2.9. I downloaded, but when I try to install, I get a message "The default location required for this install could not be found. This install will be cancelled." Any ideas? Thanks!

The download isn't the complete application, it's an updater intended to be applied to an installed earlier version. AppleWorks is no longer sold by Apple but may be available on eBay or other retails. It has been 'end-of-lifed' and there is no support for it, however it works well on current Macs.
However given the situation you are probably better off getting something modern, such as iWork.

To bookmark a page, I click on the BOOKMARK menu, then click on BOOKMARK THIS PAGE. I start typing the description of the page in the NAME field.
Frequently, before I can finish typing the description, Firefox will close the popup window, saving the bookmark to the default location. At this point, I repeat the procedure to add a bookmark, finish typing the description, and specify the correct folder location.
