FCS2- Importing ( AVC HD) from Sony Hybrid HDRSR12

Hello to all FCS2 users.
(Please forgive me if this question has already been posted.)
I have a Mac G5 with Final Cut Studio 2.
I was in the midst of purchasing the Sony Hybrid HDRSR 12 camcorder, but... unbeknownst to me,
I discovered that I will not be able to import any video from its digital hard drive via FCS2, due to the fact that this particular SONY (tape-less) product can only work with a Mac that has the Intel chip. (?)
I spoke to someone at Sony about this enigma and they in turn informed me that there "might be" a plug-in/codec available for the regular Mac G5/Final Cut Pro 6.0.4 (Studio 2) users.
I hope this makes sense.
Does anyone know?
Please let me know before I am forced to purchase a Mini-DV camcorder.

Here's what I've been doing. I noted you already have the Mac hardware and OS covered; don't know if FCP6 (FCS2) is required for the SR12 as I only picked up FCS2 recently (was using FCE). Anyway,...
I've got the cradle/dock plugged directly into a USB port on the front of the Mac, not through a hub (don't know if it matters; don't have a hub to try it). With the SR12 docked, turning on the camera automatically brings up the "USB select" screen, at which point I'm choosing the top/left "USB connect" option (the one with the hard drive icon). The SR12 then tells me "Connected" - end of SR12 setup ("that was easy").
I've launched FCP and selected "Log and Transfer..." from the File menu. This brings up the Log and Transfer window; it briefly shows a "{camera_name} adding..." message, and then a list of clips with the (default) name, first frame still, volume name, media start (00:00:00;00) and media duration for each. If I select the first clip and click on "Add Selection to Queue", it begins transferring the clip. It shows a general status that implies it's transferring, but no elapsed or time remaining (which would be "nice"). Using an HC7 and Firewire, a 30 minute clip would take 30 minutes to "Log and Capture" in realtime; using the SR12, a 27:12;18 clip (recorded in FH mode) took approx. 24 minutes (I'm guessing lower quality/resolution clips would be smaller and consequently faster). Personally, I think the best advantage of the "Log and Transfer" method is that it's a background process; I can do other things (like this) while it's working.
Note: I didn't see any codec choices during the "Log and Transfer" process, although in the "tasks" menu (pop up menu with gear icon), under "preferences", there are two "sources" listed - both appear to default to the "Apple ProRes 422" option for video. For the "AVCHD Plugin" source (which I'm guessing applies in this case), there's an "Apple Intermediate Codec" transcode option, but selecting it doesn't give me any other sub-options for 50i or anything else, so I'm not sure where that comes in.
Hope this helps.

  • IMovie '09 Won't Import HD Content from Sony HDR-SR11 Camcorder

    Hi,
iMovie stopped importing HD content from Sony HDR-SR11 camcorder. It only recognizes the standard definition content in the preview thumbnails. Previously this used to work with both a FireWire cable and a Mini USB. All of a sudden it doesn't import HD clips. There's no plugin failure either, because I reinstalled iMovie '09.
    System Specifications:
    Intel iMac 20" (Late 2008)
    Intel Core 2 Duo@ 2.4 GHz.
    4 GB RAM
    Snow Leopard (10.6.4)
    Thanks!

With this camera you must erase the SD clips from the camera before you can import the HD clips.

  • How could I Import RAW  photos from sony A300 into Lightroom 1.4.1?

How could I Import RAW photos from sony A300 into Lightroom 1.4.1?
RAW photos files in sony A300 are saved as "*.arw".
    any one can help?

This is well known bug. One day Adobe will recognise that with the best live view system (A350/300) and best usability (A700) they need to take the Sony DSLR's seriously.
Use the Import function, but use "choose files". Your CF card (in Camera or reader) will just be another drive. Navigate down to the folder with the pictures - control+A, choose selected. Then choose copy to new location and import (safer than using move).
Don't forget to tick the backup box.
    Hope this helps. Peter

  • Cant import raw files from sony rx1003 into iPhoto

Cant import raw files from sony rx1003 into iPhoto.  with rx1002 no problem! any suggestions?

Every model of a manufacture's camera have a different  RAW format and, therefore, you'll have to wait until Apple receives the necessary information from Sony so they can create a RAW Compatibility Updater that includes that model.
In the meantime you can try the Adobe RAW converter with might support that camera model to create a dmg file that iPhoto will recognize and begging shooting the highest resolution jpegs until the updater is released.

  • Does FCP7 directly imports AVCHD files from sony cam?

Does the new FCP 7.0 directly imports AVCHD files from sony cam?
Does it need any conversion? If yes, how is the conversion time, and does the conversion degrades image quality?
    Thanks in advance.

Which sony camera? there are a lot.
Yes, it needs to convert. AVCHD isn't a format that most editing systems deal with natively. You will be converting it to ProRes. The conversion time is dependent on too many factors to give a precise number. Based on computer used, processors, RAM, how much footage, where it will be stored...all of that. The conversion doesn't degrade the image.

LOG AND TRANSFER.  I have the full workflow here:
    http://library.creativecow.net/ross_shane/tapeless-workflow_fcp-7/1
Make sure you are running FCP 7.0.3.  That version deals with files from the NX5 the best.  If you are on a previous version, like FCP 6....you will need to use CLIPWRAP2 from Divergentmedia.com.  As the specific AVCHD format the NX5 uses is something that FCP 6 cannot really deal with.
    Gotta love new camera formats.

  • I can not import 60p files from Sony NEX-FS100U to Final Cut Pro X.

I can not import 60p files from my Sony NEX-FS100U to Final Cut Pro 10.0.1.  Does Sony offer a plug in?

I shoot fishing footage of big catches.  Slow motion playback appears to me to be much better when shot it 60p even compared to 60i.  It also blows away all of the other formats for a "still" grab.  Thank you for your help as I did a search and downloaded Clip Wrap which converted the files to .mov and they actually do import the full 60 frames.  Thank you again for your reply.

  • Can't import live video from Sony PD 170.

Just got Final Cut Pro X. In a New Event I am able to import live video from the new MacBook Pro computer's built-in camera and pre-recorded video from my Sony PD-170 camera. However, when trying to import live video from the PD-170, the program only APPEARS to do so--the clips never show up once I close the import window. Any suggestions?

I think iMovie is corrupted. I would like to try to uninstall iLife 11 but when I put in the disc there is no uninstall option. I tried trashing iMovie from applications and reinstalled all of iLife (I believe wasted space on my HD) but the issue remains. (Maybe because I didn't delete the receipts?) iMovie can not see any devices or use iSight for capture...

  • How do I import RAW images from Sony NEX 5-R to iPhoto?

I have Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and iPhoto 9.4.2 and have installed Digital Camera RAW compatability update 4.01 but still can't import RAW images from my new Sony NEX 5-R digital camera.. any ideas? I also have Photoshop CS6 - should I import through that if iPhoto isn't a feasible option..?

This is the list of currently supported cameras
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5371?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
The Nex5-R is not on the List and so that Raw format is not supported at this time.
Note: The Raw from every model of camera is different. Note: that's every model not every brand. So, the NEF produced by a Nikon D40 is not the same as the NEF produced by a D60, the CR2 produced by a Canon 350 is not the same as the CR2 produced by a Canon 400.
Therefore the Raw for every camera model needs to be added individually. If yours is not supported then let them know you want it:

  • Import video, stills from Sony Mini DVD-RW?

    Hi.
I just bought a Sony DVD 403. How do you import video from the Sony DVD-RW?
When trying to drag the files from the mini DVD I get "Unsupported File Type" into iDVD, iMovie HD, Quicktime, and Final Cut Express. (All are the latest versions). Thank you for your response.
    Walter

    Thank you Len!
I wouldn't mind spending the 20 dollars if it lets me import my videos from the
Sony DVD-RW. I find it odd that iDVD plays the videos without anything of the mini DVD alright but I can't save them? Are you sure about that JPEG 2? When I
do a get info it does not say what those files are. Thank you for all your help.
The USB on it is useless, I can't figure why no fire wire and I for sure thought
I could import from a DVD. What a disappointment. You have great video and
sound and can't get it into the G4.

  • Importing to FCPX from Sony Camera

I am trying to import 1080/60P clips from a current Sony camera into FCPX.
I am well aware of the tradeoff of size vs editing ease between AVCHD and ProRes. In this case I have hundreds of clips, most of which will be trimmed drastically if they are used at all. So I am hoping to do a rough cut in native format, then transcode that rough cut for final editing and cleanup. Should be a big saving in disk space. I have a new quad core Mac that should be able to play the native clips quite well.
I already have an archive of the camera files on a Firewire 800 drive. I was hoping that FCPX would be able to import it by reference, creating little wrapper .mov files. However when I try to do that, I get a message that the folder containing the video cannot be imported. (It does offer to import the folder of stills that is part of the same file structure).
If instead I choose Import from Camera, FCPX happily ingests the video files but from the size of the .mov files it creates it is clear that they are not references but copies of the camera originals. That makes complete sense for initial import of an actual SD card or USB-mounted hard drive, but I really don't want another 50 GB of files filling up my drive.
If necessary I will use that process then delete the 50 GB of originals (I do have another copy on a second drive). But I am hoping that there may be a way to create reference wrappers around the files I already have on my drive so that I can work with them where they are.
I am interested to know why FCPX behaves as it does, if anyone knows. For example, are audio and video multiplexed differently in the camera archive than in the .mov files that FCPX creates?

    Thanks for the quick reply.
Camera is HDR-PJ760, which has proved to be absolutely amazing for handheld shots in difficult conditions. Many of the shots in this project were taken from a boat on the ocean, where a tripod would not have helped. All using the highest available quality settings at 60P. You can't get back quality thrown away in the camera. (Yes I know that the high compression in AVCHD is in fact throwing away a lot, but there is always some tradeoff to get a reasonably compact handheld camera.)
I am guessing that the camera files are muxed, and that is why they cannot be used directly. If that's the case, I will just have to put up with the conversion step.

  • Importing a project from Sony Vegas

I'm trying to import a project that was initially edited in Sony Vegas to do audio and color correction in Final Cut. Apart from rendering the project out to an HDV tape, and re-importing it into Final Cut through Log and Capture, what is the best methodology so as to retain the most data for timelines, etc.
We can even go so far as to have the original hard drives, but I just can't fathom how to migrate into final cut.
    Suggestions?

The back to tape method sounds good. Otherwise using flip4mac to import an intermediate AVI's is also good.
    Does Vegas export EDL's ?

  • How can I import a movie from sony DCR trv340 tape to Macbook Pro?

I have started using iMovie, I know it's been there quite a while, and I am trying to imort from a tape using Sony DCR-TRV340. I can import tapes created on the TRV340 but other tapes that were created on a different Sony device, from back in late 1980's will not load. When I pllay them on the camcorder they appear and I can watch them in iMove but they will not record. It says NO DATA FROM DEVICE. Is there a way to fix that or a setting that needs to be changed?
    Any hel would be appreciated.

A dual mode camcorder with both a photo camera and camcorder function.
While Apple doesn't seem to list these as compatible, have you tried connecting with a firewire cable, and turning on iMovie and seeing if it recognizes your camcorder?
Here is Apple's commentary on trying to get a camcorder to work:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1059#2
What about contacting Samsung, often companies have a knowledge base.
I know this isn't what you were asking, but if you have something recorded you absolutely must have, I have a hunch a friend with an older windows computer might be able to get it downloaded, then you could transfer it by thumbdrive to imovie.
    Just a thought.
