FDA CFR 21 Part 11 using DSC Module

I am implementing an application using the DSC Module that needs to comply with the regulations for digital signature etc. according to FDA CFR 21 Part 11. I have been reading the tutorial:  Using LabVIEW to Create FDA 21 CFR 11 Compliant Applications and it explains how to comply to the different sections of the regulation. Most of it is pretty straight forward, however when it comes to signature manifestation there is very little information on how this should be done? There is no explanation on how a signature can be tied to data that has been collected or how a signature is suppose to be stored (other than that it can be written to the database)?
Is there anyone that has implemeted this using the DSC module that can provide me with some design ideas?
Best regards,
Bjorn Larsson

Hi Joe,
Thanks for your response.
The problem is more of a design issue. I have gone through the training material and the tutorials for FDA CFR 21 part 11 and do not clearly understand how to manifest the signature or how a signature is related to logged data.
Below is an excerpt from the http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/4570 : My comments or questions are in red.
11.50 Signature Manifestations
(a) Signed electronic records shall contain information associated with the signing that clearly indicates all of the following:
(1) The printed name of the signer.
You can programmatically get the printed name of the signer and log this information to the database.
This is no problem I know where to get the login name. But not how to log it to the database? Should I create a shared variable with type string and enable logging? It is not really ideal to log this to the Citadel because it is more of an event and is better suited in an relation database? It is unclear what the author of the document ment with "the database".  Is it the Citadel or just a user designed database?
(2) The date and time the signature was executed.
The date and time is attached to all data logged to the database.
This implies that the signature should be logged to the Citadel database?
(3) The meaning (such as review, approval, responsibility, or authorship) associated with the signature.
You can design the application so that when a user applies an electronic signature, he/she must choose the meaning of the signature from a list, such as review, approval, responsibility, or authorship. The DSC module can write these meanings to the database with the signature.
Again this refers to "the database" as if it was obvious? It is simple to add a combobox with meanings, but this is better implemented using a relation database since the meaning needs to be attached to the name and date?
(b) The items identified in paragraphs (a)(1), (a)(2), and (a)(3) of this section shall be subject to the same controls as for electronic records and shall be included as part of any human readable form of the electronic record (such as electronic or printout).
All the information in part (a) of this section is written to the database. Therefore, you can use SQL queries or MAX to retrieve it in the same way you can retrieve all other data written to the database.
Here the author implies that the signature is stored in a relation database and retrieved by SQL queries? Also there is no explanation on how a signature is tied to logged data? In other words, a user needs to know what he applies his signature to? Is a dataset or a time interval or something else? How can a user find out what data that has been signed and what has not been signed?
Please let me know if I have completely misuderstood or missed some built in functionality of the DSC module that makes signature manifestation easy?
Best regards,
Bjorn

  • Control valve that opens and closes linearly using DSC

I have to create a control valve that opens and closes linearly.I want to view its variation in percentage wise in the graphical form which uses DSC module.

    Hi Gerardjoe,
I'm not sure that I completely understand what you're trying to do. In the DSC modules, the valves (2D and 3D) are simply boolean indicators.
One thing you could do, to see some sort of a percentage change, would be to have an indicator such as a vertical fill slide. Here, you would put a number between 0-100.
Then, you could have a comparison, such that if this value was over, say, 60, then the boolean value would be true and the valve would turn on. Else, the value would be false and the valve would stay false.
I hope that this answers your question; if I did not understand correctly, please do respond and clarify.

  • Is it possible to connect labview with opc server without using NI dsc Module ?

    Hellow sir,
I want to get data over labview using OPC server and i am not using any dsc module vi (Alams, print, GUI, security).I am using share variable to get data from OPC server to labview. Now i want to deploy that application to third party computer. (where there is no NI software is installed)
    i am using labview 8.6 and 2009.
    Many ? like....
    1) what is the procedure to install that application in third party computer.
    2) Do i need to use my dsc run time licence..?
waiting for your valuable feed back.
    Thank you.

Hi, When you connect to NI OPC Server by creating New I/O Server > OPC Client. You will see all registered OPC Servers running on local machine or remote machine. I used KepServerEx from Kepware and LSIS OPC Server from LG with no problems. Just make sure that the OPC server is running.
    Hope it helps

  • LabVIEW 8.6.1 DSC Module and SQL Server Agent

I had the following system constellation:
    - LabVIEW Professional Dev System 8.6.1 installed (complete)
    - SQL Server 2005 Express
Since Microsoft's SQL Server 2005 is no longer distributed, I had to install SQL Server 2008 Express on my system, too.
Everything is working fine, but after installing the 2008 Express version the SQL Server Agent appears in the '2008 instance!
This is quite good, but normaly the Express editions doesn't contain the Agent...?!
Since LV8.5 (?) the DSC module uses Microsoft SQL Server Express, right? (--> This is very good, but the documentation of the DSC module is more than bad.!!)
Is there any context between SQL 2008 Express <--> LV DSC??

    Hi _avr_,
There's no documentation about LV DSC
supporting SQL Express 2008 because it's not supported. It may work if
you were to detach the database and reattach it, but it's something we
    have not tested.
You are writing, that SQL Server 2005 Express is no longer distributed, however this is a Software which is a part of Installation Pack of a DSC Module. So if you have the DVD for LabVIEW with DSC Module you could install it without any problem. For DSC Module 8.6 we included the SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 on the DVD.
I do not really now why in your case the Agent is appering. You have right, the SQL Server 2008 Express does not contain any Agent.I do not have any explenation for it.
NI supports only DSC with SQL Server 2005 Express. The DSC Module 2009 is also working with SQL Server 2005 Express SP1. For Windows 7 SQL 2005 SP3 is recomended.
I would suggest you to deinstall the SQL Server 2008 Express.

  • Questions re: Licensing & Feature Availability of the DSC module

    Hello,
I transferred a project to another development PC. When I opened it, some of my network shared variables (NSV's) were flagged with Feature Errors: "Initial Value: Not licensed or cannot be edited outside of LabVIEW." I found out that it's because I didn't install the DSC Module on the newer machine; removing the "initial value" feature made the error message disappear.
That error itself wasn't a big deal, but it got me thinking and investigating. http://www.ni.com/white-paper/4679/en says:
If you want to use the features of the LabVIEW DSC Module, you must host the shared variables on Windows. The LabVIEW DSC Module adds the following functionality to network-published shared variables:
    · Historical logging to NI Citadel database.
    · Networked alarms and alarm logging.
    · Scaling.
    · User-based security.
    · Initial value.
    · The ability to create custom I/O servers.
    · Integration of the LabVIEW event structure with the shared variable.
    · LabVIEW VIs to programmatically control all aspects of shared variables and the shared variable engine.
    Question 1
I did not realize that the Initial Value feature was part of the DSC Module. If I use it in a project, does that mean that my customer would need to buy a DSC runtime license? (I'm not using any other DSC feature)
    Question 2
In my project, the NSV's in question were hosted on a cRIO target, yet my prototype (which had Initial Value enabled) ran happily without issues. This contradicts the documentation above which says "you must host the shared variables on Windows". Is this expected?
    Question 3
I created a new NSV on my new machine (which doesn't have DSC installed). I saw the "Scaling" option. Is Scaling part of the DSC module or not?
    Question 4
Initial Value and Scaling are generic features, unrelated to data logging/supervisory control. Why are they in the DSC Module? Should they not be in the base SV Engine?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
    1. Yes, any build that uses DSC features require a runtime license.
    2. That's a recommendation for more reliable operations.
    3. No, it is a native LabVIEW capability. The DSC modules simply adds more features regarding communication to protocols, alarming, etc
    4. Initial value, Yes. Scaling, no. I believe is for easy access. Old school method is the one shown in here at the section "Initialize Your Shared Variables".

  • Dsc module modbus server handling uint8 variables

    Hello!
I have a problem with handling Modbus uint8 variables in the dsc module . Unit8 Shared variables
are available in labview but Modbus i/o server Unit8 variables are not:
    http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/371618J-01/lvmve/dsc_modbus_using/
In our controller we split some 16 bit modbus registers into two 8 bit variables to pack some more usefull data in there.
All of my shared variables are running nicely in the shared variable engine but I've no way of
easily binding them to my Modbus i/o server uint8 variables easily.
    Any ideas?
I like the auto-scaling logging and binding of the DSC module shared variables
so I want to avoid some manual labview processes.
I want to view all shared variables in my front ponel at run time. I have 300+ variables so I'm trying to avoiding manual one-off hacks.
    James

    jamesy777,
The reason Unit8 variables are not available in the Modbus I/O sever is the nature of the I/O server data types compatible with the registers. If you’re writing to two registers, you can just read those two separate registers as U16s in LabVIEW. Otherwise, if you’re writing to the upper and lower half of the register, you can split the register into its 8-bit halves using the Split Number function in LabVIEW.

  • Error with quantity field:Datasource Creation Using Function Module method

Problem with DATASOURCE Creation using Function Module method :
I have created a datasource ZSTANDARD_COST_PRICE using Function Module method . The datasource creation is successfull when I remove the quantity field from the Z table . If I dont remove the quantity field from my Z table it gives an error as "Units Field WAERS for field STPRS of datasource ZSTANDARD_COST_PRICE is hidden". I am not able to remove this error . Please someone guide.
Let me know if my explanation is not clear enough.
    Thanks in advance,
    Neha.
Z table definition is as below :
MATNR MATNR CHAR 18 0 Material Number
BWKEY BWKEY CHAR 4 0 Valuation area
LFGJA LFGJA NUMC 4 0 Fiscal Year of Current Period
STPRS STPRS CURR 11 2 Standard Price   " Here the currency field is WAERS and table T001
PEINH PEINH DEC 5 0 Price Unit
VJSTP VJSTP CURR 11 2 Standard price in previous year
VJPEI VJPEI DEC 5 0 Price unit of previous year.

    Hi,
You should add it as one of the main fields as you have added other fields and not as the currency fields...that is..it should be part of the data source and you should be able to see it in RSO2...
Also if added as i said then it will come as new field in the data source...you can either let it be there...or hide it..
also if you want to populate it then you will have to write the code for this fields as well.
    Thanks

  • I want to Host my Shared Variables on a cRIO, but use DSC for Logging/Alarming/SCADA

    Hi everyone,
What I'm trying to do is this:
-Host shared variables on my RT targets (cRIO-9022) for reliability
-Use the DSC module to log to database, track Alarms, develop distributed HMI
The problem I'm running into is that the DSC engine (it seems) needs the shared variables it is monitoring to be hosted on that computer. The DSC engine can not run on a real-time target.
My end goal is to create a plant-wide network of cRIO's that are all linked back to a central server/PC that runs DSC to collect and stores data in a database. The plant HMI would also connect to the central server and get their information from there (not directly connected to the cRIO process). Is this possible/does any one have ideas on how to do this efficiently?
    Thanks for the help.

    Sachsm,
Thanks for the input. I tried to create a test project for this type of architecture (bound NSV's) but am running into some errors.
I have attached a screenshot of the project and front panel showing the binding status of each variable **see attached picture**
    Hosted on PC:
-Clone (Variable1) ---- This is bound to Variable1 on cRIo using the "Create Bound Variables" option in the Library
    -Variable3
    Hosted on cRIO
    -Variable1
As you can see, when I drag variable 1 directly onto the PC front panel, the variable connects (indicator is green). Likewise, when I host Variable3 on the PC and drag it to the front panel, it connects. However, when I drag the Clone (variable bound to Variable1 on cRIO) onto the front panel, it cannot connect. Any thoughts?

  • Use AM module to post pre-paid expense asset amortization (Straight Line)

I'm new to this area and please explain in detail what I'm supposed to do for this requirement.
The requirement: Use AM module to post pre-paid expense asset amortization (Straight Line amortization)
The implementation of this capability will allow Property Accounting to enter prepaid expenses into the FA subledger and have SAP automatically post monthly straight line amortizations as part of the month-end process. The idea is to configure a new asset class for "prepaid Leasing Commission" assets that will have the following GL accounts.
    GL Account: 159001000
    Cost Center: 159001000
    Profit Center: SN09120001
    Non-Reconcilition Account: 159002000
    Expense Account: 890304000
What I have done so far:
I have created an asset and have created a Cost center and assigned the profit center to that. I have also created a non-recon account. The question is where do I use the Non-recon account and the expense account and have the SAP post it automatically? Will be helpful if you can provide the steps I should be following and the tcodes for this. Thanks for the help.

    Hi,
I would recommend that you go through the IMG of Fixed Asset Accounting and complete the FI-AA configuration.
You store the accounts to be used in postings in the node "Integration with General Ledger".
Requirements to use cost center as accounting object are documented in the SAP Help Portal as well as in note 684659.
    Regards,
    Markus

  • Pharmaceuticals Best Practice - 21 CFR Part 11

I work for a SAP partner and our company would like to learn more about and provide support for 21 CFR Part 11 compliance - tracking changes and who made the changes.  Do we need to have the pharmaceuticals best practice installed in our SAP installation, or can I simply just use the AUT01 - AUT10 transactions?
Any help / suggestions is appreciated
    Kathleen

    Hi Kathleen,
The trick with best practices is that you can use different building blocks from most best practices in other environmnents. U can use the configuration guide P45: Configuration Guide (http://help.sap.com/bp_pharmav1600/Pharma_US/HTML/business_support_EN_US.htm), by 'simply' following the steps in this guide.
Ofcourse there is a but, because you need to be sure that you implemented the right notes and baseline packages.
Hope I gave you some direction in where to look.
    Kind regards,
    Ruud

  • What is the best way to detect loss of OPC Server connection when using DSC Tags?

I'm using the DSC Module on a new project and I'm pretty impressed so far. The HMI Wizard has saved me quite a bit of time.
My application is configured where the DSC Tags are connected to remote OPC Server Tags.
The issue I'm having is that I cannot detect a loss of the OPC Server when the application is running. Read's of the front panel controls/indicators still return values and the little "connection" icon next them is still green. Even if the connection icon turned red it wouldn't help since the Front Panel is not visible when the main application is running. It is a Sub-VI that's in charge of OPC Data Interfacing. The rest of the application uses the data from the OPC Sub-
    VI.
I cannot effect a change on the OPC Servers, so I need a method of detection when the Server is lost on my end.
Any ideas on the best way to do this?
    Thanks,
    Jim

    Hi Jim,
Ideally, error-reporting and -handling should be the way to handle this. However, if errors are not reported/handled as is sometimes the case with OPC, a quick-n-dirty way to do this would be to check for a "heartbeat" signal from your OPC Server. This could be a boolean tag which toggles On and Off (or a counter ticking). You then read this Tag in DSC in a slow loop using the Read Tag VI (not the front-panel control). And keep track of the Changed? output from this Read Tag VI.
As long as the 'Changed?' output is true, you are receieving data from the OPC Server, and hence it's alive. You may add some deadband logic to wait for a specific period of time before declaring the Server's really dead!
    Hope this helps,
    K

  • Alv's using function modules

    hi,
in alv's using fuction modules how to add pushbuttons in application tool bar?

    Hi Ganapathi,
Check out the list of Function Modules
ABAP_DOCU_DOWNLOAD     Download ABAP documentation in HTML format.
APPL_LOG_DELETE     With this function module you delete logs in the database according to specified selection conditions
APPL_LOG_DISPLAY     With this function module you can analyze logs in the database.
APPL_LOG_DISPLAY_INTERN     With this function module you can analyze logs in local memory, e.g. when you have only collected log records at runtime and do not want to write to the database.
APPL_LOG_INIT     This function module checks whether the specified object or sub-object exists and deletes all existing associated data in local memory.
APPL_LOG_READ_DB     With this function module you read the log data in the database for an object or sub-object according to specified selection conditions.
APPL_LOG_READ_INTERN     With this function module you read all log data whose log class has at least the specified value, from local memory, for the specified object or sub-object.
APPL_LOG_SET_OBJECT     With this function module, you create a new object or sub-object for writing in local memory. With a flag you can control whether the APPL_LOG_WRITE_... messages are written in local memory or are output on the screen.
APPL_LOG_WRITE_DB     With this function module you write all data for the specified object or sub-object in local memory to the database. If the log for the object or sub-object in question is new, the log number is returned to the calling program.
APPL_LOG_WRITE_HEADER     With this function module, you write the log header data in local memory.
APPL_LOG_WRITE_LOG_PARAMETERS     With this function module, you write the name of the log parameters and the associated values for the specified object or sub-object in local memory. If this function module is called repeatedly for the same object or sub-object, the existing parameters are updated accordingly. If you do not specify an object or sub-object with the call, the most recently used is assumed.
APPL_LOG_WRITE_MESSAGE_PARAMS     With this function module you write a single message, with parameters, in local memory. Otherwise the function module works like APPL_LOG_WRITE_SINGLE_MESSAGE.
APPL_LOG_WRITE_MESSAGES     With this function module you write one or more messages, without parameters, in local memory.
APPL_LOG_WRITE_SINGLE_MESSAGE     With this function module you write a single message, without parameters, in local memory. If no header entry has yet been written for the object or sub-object, it is created. If you do not specify an object or sub-object with the call, the most recently used is assumed.
ARFC_GET_TID     will return the IP address of the terminal in hex.
