FF5 is a worse resource hog (335,544 K!) than previous versions, even with only 2 tabs open and I cleared the cache, so what can be done?

Plug-in container never goes below 28,000 K (and that's lowest). Twice it froze up looking at a page of book cover images. If I listen to Pandora while working, the plug-in container goes up to 105,000 K (and keeps rising), while FF can increase to over 361,000 K.
COMPARISON:
FF5 - 2 tabs (no Pandora) - drops to @357,000 K and plugin-container eventually down to @29,000 K
IE8 - 2 tabs (Pandora & Amazon) - @135,000K & @28,000K
Win XP Pro, Svc pk 3
Intel core 2 duo cpu
T7500 @ 2.20 GHz
Anti-virus - Panda online
Firewall - Online Armor
SuperAntispyware 4.54
Advanced System Care 3
Spybot S&D

I just downloaded the Memory Fox add-on and it helped immensely! Between the plugin container and FF5 it was using about 325,000K. Now it's down to operating at around 160,000K and will then drop the total for the 2 to about 55,000K periodically. Works for me, hope it will for you.

If it says you don't have enough privileges, it's because you are on a guest-style account. Contact your system administrator for support on that, or change into an administrator account to install Firefox.

  • Performance in CS4 worse than previous versions

I use Premiere 2.0 at work and love the stability and smoothness of the editing workflow. Don't get me wrong there are a few hiccups here and there, but what software does not have that?  I use CS4 at home on my core i7 920 6 gigs of ram geforce 285 WD raid 0 setup.  CS4 playback is ok but the editing workflow can be very sluggish.  I know that this performance issue has been reported by many, but there does not seem to be a clear explanation for it. The computer system always gets the blame, but when a previous release of premiere runs perfectly fine on a slower system and the newer CS4 runs worse on a bigger, faster system, it does not make any sense.  I know that some things have been rewritten in the software, but why such a drastic change in performance?  I have been using premiere for years, but this sure is a good way for adobe to push its customers to  look at other NLEs.

    Jim,
I have not compared it to previous versions, but CS4 4.1 on playback from the timeline of a HDV project shows this CPU load:
This is while having numerous processes open (as you can see from the 73 ones active).

  • Playback Skipping Problems with iTunes 7.3 or later - Resource Hog?

Audio playback on my computer was fine on all versions of iTunes upto and including version 7.2. The problem started when Apple released iTunes 7.3 (for the iPhone - which I don't have). Audio playback was fine if iTunes was the only program running. But if I was also using another program - like a simple 3d game or even just using the lasso tool in Photoshop - then playback sk..sk..skipped constantly. So I closed iTunes and tested my music library on Windows Media Player 11 with other programs running and audio playback was consistently good - no skipping at all. But I'd rather not use Windows Media Player if iTunes can work properly! I suspected that iTunes 7.3 had become a resource hog. When iTunes 7.4.2 was released I was hoping that the problem would be solved. It wasn't. So I uninstalled iTunes 7.4.2, re-installed iTunes 7.2 (the last version that worked) and audio playback (with other programs running) is great again. So I don't think the problem has arisen from installing any other programs. My question is : WHAT THE **** HAVE APPLE DONE TO iTUNES since version 7.2?! Please help, because I don't want to be stuck with this version and never be able to update!

    anybody?

  • CPU resource hog FMLE 3 vs. FME 2.5

Has anyone experienced a huge CPU drain by FMLE 3 - going to over 90% (and sometimes 100%) which is causing jerky video capture and audio skips.
I'm encoding at a lower level of 500 kbps for video and 32 kbps for audio with VP6 and the capture to hard disk is so very jerky.
FME 2.5 works great at the same settings on the same machine and doesn't use more than 55% of CPU resources, with a very clean capture. I've gone back to using 2.5 till I can figure out what's going on with 3.0/3.1
Why is FMLE 3/3.1 such a resource hog? Any help and advice would be much appreciated.
    My system specs are:
    Core2Duo Laptop 2.0 gHz with 4GB Ram
Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit (and 64 bit)
    Pesi
    http://www.webcastlive.mediastreams.ca
    http://www.mediastreams.ca

OK - here's where it stands with both input and output size set the same (720X480) and all other factors remaining constant as before:
    v. 2.5
CPU resources used when not recording: 15-17%
CPU resources used up while recording: 40-50%
    v.3.1
CPU resources used when not recording: 15-20%
CPU resources used while recording: 75-85% (peaking occasionally to 95%)
(still 25% more than v.2.5 but manageable).
Does this mean that I am always forced to stream and the larger output size?
Here's another variation of the test with v.3.1 ...
    Input size: 360X240 Output size: 720X480 - CPU used: 98% !!!
Input size: 360X240 Output size: 600X400 - CPU used: 72%
(What's the implication of using a smaller input and larger output size? How would it affect the quality of the end result video?)
    Input size: 360X240 Output size: 360X240 - CPU used: 22% !!!
Input size: 720X480 Output size: 360X240 - CPU used: 50%
Input size: 720X480 Output size: 600X400 - CPU used: 90-95%
Input size: 720X480 Output size: 500X334 - CPU used: 75%
(Unfortunately Input sizes are fixed by fmle and cannot go between 720X480 and 360X240)
Note: despite the interesting results of the input/output tests, its still evident that 3.1 uses 25% more CPU resources than 2.5, making it the less efficient of the 2.

  • Lower priority of a resource hog?

Is there anyway to lower the prioirty of a resource hog?

I am sure you feel better for having a rant, but you haven't provided any information about your system, so no suggestions for help are possible.
I have a 5 year old XP box and iTunes uses 0-2% CPU capacity when laying AAC files. iTunes has always been fairly slow to load but it is faster than Firefox on my system.
You can find old versions of iTunes on FileHippo. The mods don't like us posting the link but it is easy to find.

  • Is IOS5 a resource hog for iPads?

Ever since updating my iPad (original version iPad) I have experienced a marked increase I the number of times I have been knocked out of an app. Particularly with Safari. I have been diligent about closing down apps (double push home button, close out each one individually) and restarting iPad once daily. But still the problem exists and I suspect Safari is taking up more resource and services in IOS5 than its predecessor.
    Does anyone have similar experience?

There have been a few threads discussing this very same issue. I had some problems with Safari crashing on me as well. I deleted a couple of apps and then restored my iPad - to the backup that I made a couple of days before the update - when my iPad was working just fine. Before the update, I wasn't closing apps or doing anything at all to free memory.
Since the restore, Safari has been much better, but I have still crashed a couple of times. I have also experienced crashes with other apps that pull content from the Internet. I go to Settings>General>Diagnostics & Usage and I can see all of the low memory warnings and the crash data - not that I can interpre it correctly - but it shows me all of the times that Safari crashed - due to low memory issues.
Frankly, I thought that was not supposed to happen with the iPad, - apps should shut down as needed so you don't have to close them on your own. So I'm not sure where the problem lies - but to me - that indicates that there is a problem somewhere with memory issues.

  • Odd resource Hogging by Firefox Version 6 & 7

I have seen this thread in two forms: firefox using too much CPU and Firefox using too much memory.
I have tried all the suggestions listed in what threads I can find, including running in safe mode.
Basically, I run FF version 3 or 4 and it runs fine.
I upgrade to Version 6 or 7 and immediately upon start up, Fire fox consumes 45% of my CPU cycles, 200,000k + of my memory, and 100+ handles. Open up 2 tabs and it rockets to 60% CPU, 300-400,000k memory, and 2-300 handles. Each site takes between 30-70 seconds to load, even local ones. It continues to grow the resources slowing the browser down even further as it is used. I downgrade to version 3 or 4 or 5 and it's back to normal.

  • ITunes 10 is a massive resource hog

After updating to iTunes 10, I noticed that my computer was running considerably slower than usual. iTunes 9 used about 2% system resources when playing music and minimized to the dock.
So after checking Activity Monitor, I discovered that iTunes 10, when under the same conditions, uses a whopping 20% of my system resources. I **** you not. What is the deal here? It is really slowing down a lot of my other applications, and it's getting to the point where I just hook up my iPod to my speakers to play music instead.

The same thing happens to me. My GPU clock speeds go way up as soon as I open iTunes and go between any of the major pages (library cover flow, iTunes store, etc). One time I found my GPU temp at a whopping 70C after using iTunes...I can run many graphics-intensive games at max settings and only hit a temp of 75C. This is a problem that needs to be addressed. I'm using an EVGA GTX 470 btw. Does anyone know how to report bugs to Apple?

  • Facebook news feed cpu resource hog on Firefox.

Anyone else seeing this bug on Firefox. I'm using 32 bit on netbook. When I switched to other tabs, the cpu usage drop immediately. When I switched back to facebook news feed/home tab, the cpu usage will shoots up to 100% and does not drop.
I only have vimperator and noscripts addons. I've already tried disable javascript on facebook but still the same. No problem with Chromium, though. I've noticed recently that google plus feed on chromium become cpu hog too on my netbook but not on Firefox.

  • When will you get rid of the resource hog, "Plugin-Container.exe"

Plugin-container-exe has a memory leak. When you go in and out of numerous web sites, it consumes more and more and more memory and turns my computer into a dog. Since the inclusion of the plugin-container, explorer is now a better browser.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== The last update that included plugin-container.

Are you serious that this is your "solution"? I did as you suggested -- changed the flags to "false" -- and now I restared Firefox with a mere 10 tabs open (no videos; just a few text pages, gmail, yahoo finance, barrons.com) and Firefox is consuming 1.1 gb of RAM. What's the reason behind this? It looks like whatever resources were being swallowed by plugin-container.exe are now being swallowed by Firefox itself, so that doesn't solve the problem.
Is Firefox a good idea taken too far? When it began, the Firefox project was a fast, nimble browser. Is it now too bloated and convoluted to be of any use? Is it a victim of its success?

  • Saying what plugin-container does is not a solution to the problem that it is a resource hog

https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/forum/1/704242 claims to be a closed question because a "solution" was provided. What solution? You say what plugin-container is supposed to do, but you don't say how to disable it and still use plugins or whether anything is being done to address the resource concerns that were raised. It's a POS and should be fixed or eliminated.

  • McAfee resource hog

My previous AV, ESET, expired and as BTNetProtect is free I thought I'd give it a try. Install went fine but then I started noticing things slowing down, especially on boot up and watching my CPU resources I see mcshield.exe using up to 90% at a time.
A quick search on google and I discover it's a known issue and various patches have been issued to resolve the matter, the patches I guess don't work for this version.
Anyone have any solutions else I'll go back to ESET.

Try MeanMint's advice above. MSE made a huge difference to the running of my computers. After uninstalling McAfee, you should download and run their clean-up tool to get rid of a surprising amount of junk. It's here: http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507. Many people recommend also installing Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) to run a scan now and then to supplement MSE.

  • Resources garbage collection, can be done this way ?

    The problem
I would like to apply the same concept of garbage collection to system resources like Files, Database resulsets, Sockets etc...
    The reasons
I am tired of looking around desperately into a program to identify memory leak that are instead resources leak. And this is getting worse while program size grows.
    How it could be done
-- Let's have a resource manager class from where I get the wanted resource (I will write this class, fairly easy).
-- Let's say that this manager class is a thread that runs in a scheduled way and this is decided by me (this is also something anybody can write).
-- Let's say that when it runs it checks for all resources (objects) that it has given to the rest of the program if the reference count greater than one. If it is > 1 then the resource is still in use, else it can be deallocated (that just means calling close and then leaving the object to garbage collect).
    What I need
A way to know in a reliable way how many objects are having a reference to a given object. Is there such a way ?
    Evangelism on..
Please, if anybody at Sun is reading this, this IS a TOP issue. If you look around you will see more and more issues of leaking, they are resources leakage because it is NOT easy to ALWAYS close a resource.
Someone may say "use the finally" of yes, try to think to use the finally to deallocate memory and you will immediatly understand the mess that will come.
Garbage collection is a good idea let's have a way to apply it to resources.
    Thanks

I have no problem, as it is, in making applications
reliable. As usual the problems come in deciding how to do
    things.Yes.
    >
Which is why mine don't. Since resources are usedin
so few places it is easy to manage their usage. We are not talking on who has the biggest gun...Eh?
    >
The sad thing is that the problem most of
the time is NOT yours but of somebody else thatforgot
to clean up after himself...Sounds more like a management problem than a code
problem. If you are allowing programmers in your
organization to write code which leaks resources oris
so poorly designed that other users can notproperly
dispose of resources then it is a managementproblem.
    Ok, let's drop it here.
I hope you will never have to deal with code other
that yours or written by your coworkers.
I always deal with other people's code. And they with mine. Although I occassionally work on one person projects - perhaps 2 weeks every three years. the rest of my career has always involved multi-person projects and often (if not always) involve third party libraries.
So I believe I have dealt with others code.
in the applications that I work on.)There is java.lang.ref in a way it seems to dowhat
    I
    want....
I don't believe so. Finalize() more closely fitswhat
you might want to do. java.lang.ref is used in
building caches of disposable entities. And it is
most definitely only useable with memory.I have a funny sensation that whatever I write you say
    no...Not necessarily.
Thanks for your help, if anybody wants to add
    something useful to
what I am tryng to do they are welcome.I am trying to be useful.
I am trying to point out that you are looking for a new feature in the language that just isn't very useful to most people. I was trying to point out why it wasn't useful to most people.
    Perhaps this might help.
Look at it this way, go look at the bug database and look at the top vote getters for things that people want fixed. Then you might trying looking through the RFEs for something like you want. If it isn't there then add it. If enough people actually want it then it will be voted for. With enough votes it would have a better chance of being added.
Of course that presumes it could be done in the first place. Based on my memory of past topics in the forums on reference counting I suspect that the answer is no. But you might want to read those.
