Ffmpeg sound delayed when recording screen

Again, apologies for opening multiple questions, but I feel these things are best addressed in separate threads:
I am using this command:
ffmpeg -f alsa -i hw:0 -f x11grab -s wxga -r 25 -i :0.0 -qscale 31 /tmp/out.mpg
I am trying to do a screencast and have noticed that even though I set the lowest quality, I still get a 1-2 second delay in audio into my feed. Does anyone know what I have to do to get rid of this delay?
Thanks!

hi stressat, thanks for all that! I tried your examples, with the following results:
ffmpeg -f alsa -ac 2 -i hw:0 -f x11grab -r 30 -s wxga -i :0.0 -acodec pcm_s16le -vcodec libx264 -vpre lossless_ultrafast -threads 0 output.mpg
playing back the above with "mplayer output.mpg" yields error:
[AO OSS] audio_setup: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: No such file or directory
AO: [alsa] 48000Hz 2ch s16le (2 bytes per sample)
Video: no video
Starting playback..
followed by squeaky noises out of the speaker. No idea why mplayer chooses OSS, after all I selected alsa? Also, as you can see, no video, even though I do have x264 installed.
Your second example:
ffmpeg -f x11grab -i :0.0 -s wxga -r 30 -b 6500 -bt 712k -sameq output.mpg
Playback shows only part of my screen, but bigger as if it had been switched to 640x480 before recording. Odd.
Didn't try fbdev as I want to record an X session. No idea why the video in the first example won't record, maybe I have to play with a different codec? I am using a fairly recent laptop, so I shouldn't have an issue (Aspire AS3810tg)
Thanks for your help so far! It is very much appreciated, even if I may not ever find the right settings...
I also took a peek inside /usr/lib/x264.h but that didn't enlighten me at all about what other options I could try passing to the library...

  • IMovie Delay When recording

    Does anyone see a delay when recording with the built in camera?
    While the camera is recording there is about a second delay to the time I see it on the screen.
    Can someone tell me if this is normal because I don't remember having it with Tiger?

    Thnx for your help and from what i can now see is that there is a delay between when i press record and when the timer at the top appears, but this is no longer causing problems with footage being missed because of the error.
    Thanks,

  • Microphone delay when recording

    Hello people of the creative community I'm writing to you about my soundcard, let me start from the beginning. See I bought a 5.1 soundblaster sound card and I used it for recording music and music playback and it worked perfectly. Ok about a month later the outlet on the soundcard got broken because the mic cord got pulled to hard while it was still plug into the internal soundcard, so i went out and bought a new soundcard only this time I bought the 24 bit 7.1 soundcard and everything installed perfectly only now when I try to record theres a delay in the vocals when I'm recording and I was wondering if there was something I could change in the configuration options that would fix this problem

    If your 24-bit card is Live! 24-bit then
    - if you're using ASIO compatible software for recording --> instal Asio4All drivers
    Use ASIO/Asio4All drivers with latency set as low as possible (least 5-10 ms when recording, 10-50 ms while mixing).

  • CP4 Freezes Machine when recording screens

    Hi - I'm using CP4 on a new machine which is 64 Bit Win7 with Office 2010.
    Previously I ran CP4 on 32 Bit Win XP with Office 2007 without any problems.
    However, since I have upgraded I am experiencing problems when recording.  This seems to be worse when recording Office 2010 screens or when any Office 2010 programs (like Outlook) are running.
    When I'm lucky the recording just stops working - the print screen key doesn't work, the end key doesn't work but I can still click the CP icon in the system tray to return to Captivate.
    When I'm unlucky my entire computer freezes and no keys work, even Ctl + Alt + Delete and I have to force a shutdown.
    I've had a look in the event viewer and this seems to be the problem:
    Event ID: 80
    Source: Sidebyside
    Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 4\AdobeCaptivate.exe".Error in manifest or policy file "" on line . Unfortunately I don't really understand what this means or how I can solve it.
    Just posting this in hopes that it means something to someone.
    Thanks for any help you can provide.
    Best,
    Aimee

    I'm just including the information here in hopes that it will help other users working with CP4 and Win 7 or considering this option.
    I have had major issues with this and was back and forth with Adobe Support for three months.
    In the end they produced this:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/827/cpsid_82758.html
    (notice it only mentions 64 bit)
    But at the beginning of the process they said that Adobe Captivate was compatible with Win7.  Several technicians I spoke to also told me it was and in my case notes the technician indicated that this was new information to him so I think I was an early case of the problems which can arise.
    It does seem from my experience that the issue with Win7 is more severe with 64 bit.  My colleagues are working with 32 bit and while they experience some strange quirks (can't open cp files via the recent items etc) they are able to record using Win7 and CP4.  I will be getting a new 32 bit Win 7 image to see if this rectifies the problem.  Perhaps the 64 bit image also explains the issues I had with the CP5 trial.
    So for what it's worth anyone considering upgrading or experiencing problems I'd advise against the 64 bit version of Win7 together with Adobe eLearning Suite.  I hope this message will perhaps save you from the trials I've experienced in the last four months trying to work this out.
    All the best and happy captivating!

  • How do I fix the Audio Delay when recording Voiceovers?

    I've been recording voiceovers in Final Cut Pro X and noticed that its a huge delay in the audio when I play it back. The recording is like a second or two behind making the voiceovers sound wayyy off to whats actually goin gon in the video. Is there any fix to this or is this a hardware issue? I'm running Final Cut Pro off of an External harddrive since my Macbook Pro can't handle the program as well. Its a 2009 17 inch. 4 Gigs of ram....150 Gigs of storage space left running on Mavericks. Any info is appreciated.

    The VO or the video is a connected clip. You can trim it and move it according to your needs. Or do I misunderstand the issue?

  • How to show mouse clicks when recording screen with quicktime?

    How can i show the mouse click when i record the screen using quicktime player?

    Why? What program feature do you intend to offer, by knowing what a user clicks on (besides the application itself).Hi, well what I have to do is to start the application minimized in the system tray. Then the application must be listening for crtl+shift+left click in any part of the desktop or an opened application, when that happens, I have to show a window asking if the user want to take a screenshot starting in the x,y point he clicked, once done, I have to take an screenshot...so on.
    How can I do that? Can anybody give me a hint? Thanks in advance.

  • The sound delays when it in my compressor 1.2.1, somebody can help me

    I tried the same problems that you people, now that I was to think that the problems had finished, is when I discover another one. In the DVD Studio Pro when I make preview, I repair that the sound is delayed, not in the begining of the film but in the midle and it continues until the end. What can I do?

    If you mean, that when the sound file is created with
    Compressor, and you import and play it in DVD Studio Pro,
    adn it starts fine, but then is gone as it gets closer to the middle, I haven't figured this one out either, but
    I know it is somehow related to quicktime, as under QT 6.52
    everything is fine, but under QT 7.04 it happens frequently.
    What I've done in a workaround, is to export my audio
    seperately from FCp or QT Pro or iMovie, as an AIFf
    and then process seperately with APACK. this often
    leads to good audio, without the problems generated
    by Compressor.

  • Delay when recording audio compared to my midi click

    Im using my Powerbook G4 1.5G and a Presonus Firebox to record audio with a midi click. I´m using the firebox mixer for monitoring and have switched off logic software monitoring. I have no latency when listening while recording, but when listening to the recorded file, it´s delayed compared to the pre-recorded click loop.
    This is what I don´t understand. Why is the recorded file delayed? I have the delaycompensation off. It does not matter if I record on the internal disk or a Lacie external firewire disk.
    I have a G4powermac and a motu 2408 mk3 with no problems like this what so ever.
    Should i do a midi signal output correction? Is this really necessary on a setup today? Why do I not have the same problem on my G4 Powermac?
    I hope somebody have an idea.

    there is always some latency when the signal goes thru the computer.
    you can do a test and determine how much delay you are seeing and then
    go to:
    audio/audio hardware & drivers/drivers
    and in the recording delay box put in the amount to be compensated for.
    With my setup i fugured out that I had 57 ms of delay.

  • Noisy sound data when recording 16 bit. Anyone experience this?

    I'm working on a program that displays a spectrogram and it works just fine with 8-bit audio, but not so well with 16-bit. In the 16-bit data there's an incredible amount of noise that isn't present in the 8-bit data. Oddly, the noise is present across the entire range of frequencies I'm reading. If it makes a difference, I've only tested this on Vista. Here is an abbreviated code snippet:
    ArrayList<double[]> wave = new ArrayList<double[]>();
    int sampSize = audioFormat.getSampleSizeInBits();
    numBytesRead = targetDataLine.read(data, 0, data.length);
    wave.add(new double[dataSize]);
    if (sampSize == 16) {
          for (int i = 0; i < numBytesRead / 2; i++) {
                wave.get(wave.size()-1) = (double) ((data[2*i+1] << 8) | data[2*i]);
    } else if (sampSize == 8) {
    for (int i = 0; i < numBytesRead; i++) {
    wave.get(wave.size()-1)[i] = (double) data[i];
    //perform fft on wave data

    Alright. I've created an "sscce" as suggested, and managed to keep it just under 20KB. It's pretty self explanatory but I will describe it briefly:
    The program graphs the waveform of data read from a microphone. Two graphs are displayed. The top graph displays the data read in 8-bit form, and the bottom graph reads the data in 16-bit form. I wasn't sure if it was possible to read in 8-bit data and 16-bit data from the same source simultaneously, so you have to toggle between them. Clicking in the graph area will pause/unpause that graph, allowing the other graph to run. Pausing both graphs allows for the data to be compared side-by-side.
    This image illustrates my problem: http://yfrog.com/3d8vs16graphj. The data was recorded during silence, so what you see is purely noise. The 16-bit data clearly has plateaus that aren't present in the 8-bit data. I believe these "plateaus" are the cause of the broad spectrum of noise in my fft results. If anyone is interested, please test my code by copying and pasting directly into a new project:

  • N81 8gb sound delay in java and sis games

    Hi i need some answers about this problem. There is a 0.75 second sound delay when i try and play any java or sis, sisx game, even the new ngage demos have this sound delay, i am not the only one having this problem either, check out ngage forum and there are at least 5-10 who say they also have this sound lag. Could anyone have any ideas if this will be remedied in fw updates or will have to send my phone off and hope it is replaced with a unit which does not have this problem, if it is replaced at all. I have called nokia careline and they have no record of any such bugs but i find this amzing to hear, if it is a faulty batch shouldnt nokia post this on their web pages so consumers can do something about it, after all enough people are mentioning this problem its not just me. Any help is welcomed.
    regards

    Well, 0.75 seconds isn't too bad. I have a few suggestions. Don't keep too many applications on, Don't use up too much battery power and don't use all the memory of your memory card.
    That's right people, I'm back. Where have I been? I have been getting a life, away from this electric madness.

  • When I film something the sound isn't recorded... why?

    When I try to film something, the sound isn't recorded only the images. Does anybody know what is the problem? In the begginning it used to record everything but after I don't know what happened and when I play the movie in the top of the screen appears like a line showing the fragments of the whole movie and a bar goes passing over the images like a timeline....

    The same thing happens to me. But in my case my 12yr old son noticed that I cover the phone's speakers with my hands while filming, not that thats your case. I just thought to tell you cause its funny is all. Hope some one can assist you. Good luck.

  • IPhone 4s Voice Memo App has 5 second delay when the record button is pressed. When it starts recording, it goes from 0 seconds to 5 or so seconds recorded. This happens randomly and often and sometimes has the delay but starts at zero. Solution Anyone?

    After iOS 7 update, my iPhone 4s Voice Memo App has 5 second delay when the record button is pressed. When it starts recording, it goes from 0 seconds to 5 or so seconds that it shows has recorded. This happens randomly and often, sometimes it will have the 5+ second delay but starts recording at zero seconds. Besides the delay it has been working fine as far as saving and playback is concerned. I have plenty of storage on the phone itself and it NEVER had this problem before I updated to iOS 7. I've reset the phone a couple times by holding down the power and home buttons at the same time. The reason I have an issue with this is that I'm always recording song ideas, melodies, and scratch takes; what I'm saying is when I come up with an idea I need to be able to know that when I hit record it will start right then so I don't forget anything that has just popped in my mind.
    Does anyone have a solution or suggestion?

  • RMBP, Chrome, Youtube: Video delays when in full screen

    Hi all,
    I have a retina Macbook Pro running Mac OS X 10.8.2, Chrome 25.0.1364.99. When I watch youtube videos there is normally no lag. Once I switch into full screen mode, there's a slight delay where instead of the video the screen will show a blank white screen before switching to the video.
    This results in a slight 0.5-1s lag of the video behind the audio.
    Opening the same video on Firefox and going to full screen doesn't result in this blank white screen and does not result in video lagging behind audio.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thank you,
    it also worked for me

    Had the exact same problem the past couple of days, was really frustrating as it was making videos play delayed in full screen and I tried searching for it everywhere but couldn't find any solutions.
    Anyway, what I did has fixed it as a temporary workaround:
    1. In Chrome, type chrome://plugins in the address bar
    2. Click top right to expand +Details
    3. Navigate to:

    You need to disable the first of the two entries...which I have highlighted in Bold above.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can you use midi sounds when recording videos on Photobooth?

    Can you use midi sounds when recording videos on Photobooth?
    Basically, i like to record videos of me singing and playing guitar or keyboard, but to get a good sound for the keyboard I'd like to be able to record the audio using MIDI sounds...
    Ive got Logic, I've got M-Audio Fast Track Pro, into which i have my mic, guitar, and keyboard midi plaugged into. I can use it to record the mic and guitar on photobooth as they are audio inputs, however i can't use the midi sounds on the keyboard :/ I have tried having logic open with the desired MIDI sound selected whilst recording but it doesnt work...
    Is there ANY way this is possible?
    HELP PLEASE!
    Thanks!

    I Have just the same problem, if I shout very near the microphone i can just hear something, did you manage to solve the problem?
