Field length misreported in application with AL32UTF8 database

Hi all,
I have the following problem with two different applications running against an Oracle 10.2 database with AL32UTF8 character set. The tables in the database are created using NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS=CHAR. The problem is that in the applications, the length of the fields are misreported as being 3 or 4 times longer, so that the users can input too much data which can then not be stored. For example with a field created as VARCHAR2(20 CHAR), it is reported in the application as either 60 or 80 characters depending on where it is run from.
I suspect this is because both applications don't implement proper support for length semantics. One is a Win32 application written in Delphi and using the SqlDirect interface to OCI. The other is a Microsoft .NET framework 1.1 application using the Microsoft System.Data.OracleClient interface to OCI. The application can read and write data including international characters but the lengths are incorrect.
I don't know much about the low-level OCI details but when scanning the documentation I found some information about OCI_ATTR_CHAR_SIZE which is what I suppose the application should use to get the character length of a field.
I made a quick test program using the Oracle Data Provider for .NET and with that it seems to report the column lengths correctly, but changing to that for the .NET application is not something that can be done quickly.
I would be very interested to know if anyone else has encountered similar issues, and if there was a solution that did not involve changing the application, i.e. is there some parameter or something that could be changed so that the application reports the size in characters?
If this is indeed an application/driver bug as I suspect, then I will take the question to the corresponding supplier.
Thank you very much in advance for any input you can give on this issue
Robert

The third-part drivers, like those you mentioned, are usually built on OCI and, if they are not aware of character semantics, they always use OCI_ATTR_DATA_SIZE attribute to retrieve the column length. This attribute is always in bytes and there is no option to change this.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the reply.
My scenario is that there is one web service and this web service has one method name "getQueryOutput".
Input parameter to this method is Select query
select ename form empthe return type of this method is Document. Currently I hard coded the select statement as I want to display all employee name as application starts.
But I am getting following error

  • Can not connect Fusion Web Application with MySQL database

Hello to everybody, I have installed jDeveloper since 3 days ago and I am still not able to run a simple web application just to try! I have worked previously with Eclipse and NetBeans but none of them had sooo much errors related to everything. I pasted the JDBC driver everywhere in the jdeveloper folders, to JDK and JRE. To be clear, I created a Fusion Web Application, created an AppModule, tested the conncection with the database and it was fine, created a simple jsf page and added one DataView from the AppModuleDataControl to the jsf file. Everything is ok and when I want to run the jsf file I receive this error:

I pasted the JDBC driver everywhere in the jdeveloper folders, to JDK and JRE.
The MySQL Connector Java JAR files are not found in the runtime class of the web application as indicated by the error message java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError, msg=com/mysql/jdbc/DatabaseMetaData

  • How to integrate android application with oracle database using oracle mobile database server.

    Hi,
I developed one web application using oracle database. I want to implement same web application in android. My problem is how to integrate android application with existing oracle database using oracle database mobile server. Can u please guide me how to install oracle database mobile server and how to integrate android app with existing oracle database..
    Thank you.

In the Database Mobile Doc set there is an entire book that covers the Installation of Oracle Database Mobile Server.   Chap 4 of that book contains screen shots and all kinds of information that will help guide you through the installation.   We also have a doc on the different mobile clients.  Chap 2 of that guide covers installs and integration of an android app.

  • Flex Mobile Application with online database

    Hi,
I would like to create a Flex Mobile Application but this one have to be read/connect  to a online database ?
I don't found any tuto or infos about that...
Could you please tell me if it's possible and if yes, how to do that
    Thanks in advance !

    I don't understand one thing...
There are different type to do a connection between Flex and PHP.
Which one is the best ?
    1. With AMF (Flex :  service-config.xml, RemoteObject) (http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/articles/crud_flex_php_zend.html)
    2. With Zend Framework (Flex : Callresponder, Time,...)  already included in Flash Builder 4.5 (http://devzone.zend.com/1701/flex-and-zend-framework_part-1/)
    3. With Zend Server and Flash Builder 4.5 with PHP (http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash-builder/articles/flashbuilder-php-part1.html)
It's three differents approach but in 2 & 3, it's auto configured with Flex.. however to do a connection between Flex Mobile & PHP (online), I have to use the solution 1
So, if somebody can help me to explain and understand the difference between that.
    thanks

  • Need to call an application with in  Database trigger

    Dear all
I have created a database trigger that reads the new values inserted on my table and append the record on a text file on the operationg system.
I have a software that convert this text file to binary file.
I can call this software using a command prompt
I need to issue this command prompt from within the database trigger
I need to Know is there a package or plsql code that can call an application.
We can do this easly on the form builder using the comman HOST
But I need to issue this command from within SQL PLUS
    is there a way
    please help
    thanks in advance

another simple way is to write a C program with an exec function that calls the external program.
The C function can be called by the Oracle server as an extproc (like a PL/SQL funtion call).
Check for the extproc Oracle documentation:
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b15658/ldr_demo.htm
Sample programs you will find in your $ORACLE_HOME/plsql/demo directory.

  • Oracle Developer 6 applications with database 10g

    Hello,
My all applications are developed and running in Oracle Developer 6 with database 9i. But now i want to use
database 10g with these Oracle Developer 6 build applications.
Already compiled files (with dev 6 and DB 9i) are runing with database 10g quite nicely, but when i try to
recomplie the source files of these applications with 10g database i got the fowlloing error.
    ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [17069], [45468896], [], [], [], [], [], []
After it i open these Oracle Developer 6 applications source files with Oracle Developer 6i and use 10g database,
    compile and run very easly.
I think it is old version problem .But my development team dont want update all applications to new version (6i or other) yet.
Is there any solution to use Oracle Developer 6 applications with database 10g ?
    Thanx.

The general rule is "Ora-00600s (and 7445s, 3113s) are to be reported to Support". Look in Metalink to see whether any one else has reported it, based on the first argument. If so, there may be a workaround or a patch.
Since you are asking this generically without database version, patch level or operating system, I assume you are using the unsupported free download and do not have access to Metalink. In that context
    1) What is the problem:
The problem is your request (QSL, PL/SQL, Java) is hitting a bug or abusing a part of the Oracle software in an unexpected way. ORA-00600 is simply one of the 'unexpected and unhandled exceptions'.
    2) Required action:
Since it is unexpected and unhandled, there are several ways to proceed:
    - Search the net for the first argument (ktspgetmyb-1) to see whether someone has a workaround
    - Reproduce and Simplify your offending code until you find your own workaround.
Often this happens with some sql statement
    serache for metaling ORA-00600 log

  • How to restrict io field length...?

    hi,
how can we restrict the io screen field length on the screen with out changing field type....
    Regards,
    Anil.

    Hi ,
Do you want to restrict the display or the input length.
In case you want to restrict the display with the select-options or parameters  then simply use the extension
    ... VISIBLE LENGTH vlen
    Effect
This addition allows you to shorten the visible length of the corresponding screen field on the selection screen to vlen.
and in case you want to restrict it based on the number of characters then check out the following code.
    PARAMETERS   p_test TYPE c LENGTH 10.
    DATA  test TYPE i.
    AT SELECTION-SCREEN ON p_test.
      test = STRLEN( p_test ).
      IF test > 4 .
MESSAGE 'Length greater than 4' TYPE 'E'.
      ENDIF.
    reward if usefull.

  • Htmleditformat & Database Field Lengths

I happened across an article about SQL injection, a topic I frequently look back into to see what new threats have been discovered, and this particular author was pushing for the use of htmleditformat on all form data being inserted into a database. Now I have coded and secured several different websites against SQL injection, each using simlar to slightly-varied techniques at blocking those pesky hackers, so my question is not how to prevent SQL injections, but instead my question is more about htmleditformat and database field lengths.
htmleditformat on user-inserted data is part of my SQL injection prevention scheme, but on rare occasion I have this problem:
Let's say I have a field in my database for the user's first name, with a generous length of 20 characters.
The user's name, just as an example, is 18 characters long. No problem, right?
But let's say that user's name has a symbol, or foreign language character, that then gets converted by htmleditformat behind the scenes? Suddenly that 18 characters balloons up to 23 characters, generating an error because my CFQUERYPARAM maxlength is 20, not to mention the field in the database.
So, for those who do scrub user data with htmleditformat, how do you handle this, if at all?

I agree with mack. HtmlEditFormat is intended for displaying strings, not making them safe.  You might try using the StripHtml or SafeText user defined functions from cflib.org to remove undesired HTML from your input.

  • Problem with applications and accessing database

    Hi
I have a serious problem with my applications.I was trying to change "users"'s folder icon so I changed the setting in information.I don'y know what I did but It made these problems:
many of applications does not open for example
itunes-->The folder "iTunes" is on a locked disk or you do not have permission...
picasa alerts me with a database error
yahoo messenger just pops up once and doesn't open.
    firefox the same problem
net monitor alerts with a database problem.
    evernote same problem
all of my address book is erased.
I think somehow I removed the db files or I changed the permission and the programs can not access to their db files.

don't know the last thing I have done was trying to change the icon and after that I found out about the problem.Maybe sth else caused the problem . anyway I copied all of my files to a new user and I removed the user with problems & everything is ok here.thank u all.

  • Application deployed on Oracle Java Cloud Service - SaaS Extension is not connecting with cloud database.

    Hello Experts,
I have deployed an ADF application on Oracle Java Cloud Service - SaaS Extension and also deployed database objects from local environment to cloud using JDeveloper. I can see the cloud database has tables and data which I have deployed but when I access the application it seems it is not able to connect with cloud database.
I have followed below document and same sample application (HRSystem).

Please guide me what can be the issue.
