File extension dictates importer to use?

Anyone have luck in getting unix shell scripts indexed by Spotlight? Perhaps I'm weird, but I don't like my shell scripts to have extensions. When I execute a script, I don't care if it's python, bash, perl, etc. I just wanna execute it After doing some research, it seems that the file extension dictates the type of file that OS X thinks it is, which in turn dictates which importer will be used to index it. My system shows it as a "Unix Executable File" but that's not specific enough for Spotlight to know how to index it.
I even spent hours browsing the low-level APIs, searching for a way to write a little utility to do this for me, but Apple doesn't expose a way to set the kMDItemKind attribute. I was hoping there was a way to explicitly set the file type for specific files, but that doesn't seem possible. Anyone know of a way?
Is it possible to create a user-defined attribute and then have Spotlight use that value to determine which importer to use?
Thanks,
Erik

Processing Raw in a 3rd Party Application
You can also process your Raw with a 3rd Party app like ACR or Photoshop. But iPhoto does not handle this gracefully and it's a bit of a kludge.
First off set your preferred app as an external editor in iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
Next: In the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, elect to use Raw with your External editor:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
Now when you go to edit the Raw it will be sent to your external editor.
Now for the kludge:
You cannot save a Raw. The work you do must be output to a new file, in a new format (jepg, tiff, whatever). However, as the External Editor is making this new file iPhoto has no knowledge of its existence. Therefore you *must save it to the desktop and then import it back to iPhoto as a new file*.
This means that you will have your Original Raw and the processed version in iPhoto but they will not be recognised as version and original. iPhoto will see them as two separate shots.

  • Mistakenly change file extension while in disk use mode

    I made the mistake of changing the file extension of a file on my Nano (5G) while it was in "disk use" mode. When I unplugged the device and later plugged it in, the modified file was gone. Does the Nano treat unrecognized files as non-existant? I tried using Windows Explorer to find the file, but nothing was there. Also, the overall memory used on the Nano has decreased by what I would guess is the same amount as the missing file. I'd like to get my file back. Any suggestions?

  • Can the file extension be removed when using the File Special Field?

    I placed a Special Field on the top of my topics that gives
    me the filename for that specific topic. I used the Insert >
    Field > Special Field > File and the File Name is inserted
    where I want it. The problem is that i don't want the file
    extension to show, just the name. I can't figure out how to do
    this...Any suggestions....anyone? Maybe a Script or an applet? Any
    input will be greatly appreciated...

    Thank you for your response. I did try something similar to
    what you suggested but the problem is that whatever I modify it
    automatically puts it back like it was as soon as I try to save it.
    This is probably because I used the Insert Special Field commands
    from the Menu. It automatically places this on the code:
    <!--kadov_tag{{<variable name=file
    x-format=default
    x-value=017.htm>}}-->017.htm<!--kadov_tag{{</variable>}}-->
    Where 017.htm is the actual name of the file for the specific
    topic. This means that it's apparently doing this on the background
    somewhere I can't see and inserting the value on the code for the
    topic...
    I hope that made sense! Again, I thank you in advance for any
    suggestions...

  • What is the best file extension for import?

    When converting a DVD to another file extension for FCP, what is the best file extension to use? When I was using Adobe products, I would convert the DVD with Stream Clip to an AVI or MPEG and bring it right in. I found these do not work well in FCP. I know I can play it in and make a capture, I was just trying to find what file extension I should use to bring it right into the browser. I receive some DVD's that are quite long and would rather convert them to another extension instead of playing it in to capture.

    In MPEG Streamclip, use the export settings that match your FCP Sequence settings. Typically that would be QuickTime DV/DVCPro (NOT .DV Stream).

  • MIDI files - opening vs importing and using templates

    I think I'm out of luck on this one, but I thought I'd put it out there anyway. I spent all morning building a new template with 50+ buses for internal recording of audio (Thank You APPLE!).
    I would like to be able to open MIDI files using that template. If I import, only the regions are imported not the tempo map, markers etc. If I open, then I can't have it use my template because it opens in an empty file.
    I've gone into the global preferences and assigned my template as the default template and still no love. Any thoughts?

    I can import the environment but all of the routing is gone. I've got like 50 buses or something and all of my tracks in the arrange are gone as well. No way to import those I imagine. It'll take me only like 10-15 mins to load them all up again, but still thats 1-150 mins each time. Thats why I built a template to begin with, to avoid routing stuff and inserting tracks over and over.
    We need an update on this one stat

  • Display File Extension in iPhoto?

    I've just started to use iphoto.  In the thumbnail view of an event (or for that matter, anytime I'm viewing a display of thumbnails), I would like iphoto to display file name and file extension.  It's not doing that and I can't see a setting in iphoto preferences to enable file extensions.  I know there's a Finder preference to show all extensions, and it is checked.
    Is there a way to display file extensions?

    Yes.
    Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
    1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
    2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
    3 - however, if you get the navigation window
    that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
    This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
    NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
    I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
    Note 1: screenshots are from PSE 10
    Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • [JS] Need Help Removing File extension (in CS2 and CS3)

    Hello All.
    I have a menu in a dialog that needs to list some file names, but without their file extensions (which will always be .txt in my case). The following is some code that successfully does this in CS3, but I also need it to work in CS2. Do you have any other ways to do this? One code that works in both versions (CS2 and CS3) is ideal.
    myNameWithoutExtensionFunction = function( myNameWithExtention ) {
    myNameWithoutExtension = myNameWithExtention
    myEndOfFileName = myNameWithoutExtension.lastIndexOf( "." )   // get the last period (.) in the filename
    if ( myEndOfFileName > -1 ) {
      myNameWithoutExtension = myNameWithoutExtension.substr( 0, myEndOfFileName )
    return myNameWithoutExtension
    Thanks in advance.
    Dan

    I realized my mistake. The above code works just fine in CS2. My mistake was elsewhere. The name I was sending to this function wasn't being recognized by CS2. Once I corrected that and sent a valid name to this function it worked. So in case someone needs to remove file extensions, feel free to use the above function!

  • Support for file extensions with more than three characters when saving - I want my FLAC!

    Why does the Wave Editor still drop characters from filenames with more than three character extensions when you save a file? But since -opening- a FLAC file with an extension of ".flac" doesn't get chopped to ".fla", why does Audition still chop off the extra character when -saving-?
    It gets old quickly when you have to save, close and reopen files in order to get Audition's Multitrack editor to play nice and be able to find files when you reopen the Session.
    Given that the FLAC filter is open source, I may just have to modify the code and recompile it to force a save to ".fla"... But of course, ".fla" is a Flash file extension, which I also use, so that is a crude hack for me.

    Hi bro...
    use in BYTE mode in place of in TEXT mode. and at the end of each line give some special charactor so as to distinguish between lines.This is effected  by unicode check too

  • How to strip file extension off a filename NSString ?

    To retrieve file extension from NSString, we use "pathExtension".
    To retrieve the filename from NSString without the extension we use ?

    9 views any nobodies helping ?
    Oh well...
    I've created this function to achieve this:
    -(NSString *) returnfile_name_without_theextension:(NSString *)filename
    NSString *filename_extension = [filename pathExtension];
    NSInteger filenameextensionlength = [filename_extension length];
    NSInteger filename_length = [filename length];
    filename_length = filename_length - (1 + filenameextensionlength);
    return [ filename substringWithRange:NSMakeRange(0, filename_length) ];
    Hope someone might find this useful.

  • Why do the file extensions (.jpg .gif .png) no longer appear when I click on a previously saved image to use that image's file name (particularly important when saving a series of images using the same root name)?

    I save a lot of images using firefox, often times from a large batch or series of images. It used to be that I would click on a previously saved image and the entire file name including the file extension (i.e. image_example.jpg) would appear in the "save as" line. Now when I click on a previously saved file, the file name appears without the file extension (i.e. image_example). Which means I have to manually type .jpg every time. For a large collection of images that I am hoping to use the same root file name and then add chronological numbers at the end, this has become incredibly frustrating, especially as it is a previously unnecessary task.
    I am using a new Macbook Pro and maybe there's something Apple related to this...? It did not happen on my old PowerBook G4. I have file extensions turned on in System Preferences.
    It should be noted that I have searched high and low and have even gone into the Apple Genius Bar where they were just confused as I was and of course ended by urging me to use Safari (shocker!) as it has all kinds of new extensions and bells and whistles. I seriously feel alone on an island with this dumb, hard to google problem. Thanks so much for any help anyone out there might have.
    I mean: is this as simple as changing a setting in about:config?
    Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for your response Mylenium, however like I mentioned multiple times, I did change all of my trackpad/scrolling settings in system preferences.  And if I wanted to use a normal mouse (or a tablet), I would've gotten an iMac instead of a MacBook Pro.  I travel often and work all over the place, not always with access to a decently sized workspace that would be required for using a mouse or tablet.

  • How to create the Export Data and Import Data using flat file interface

    Hi,
    Request to let me know based on the requirement below on how to export and import data using flat file interface.....
    Please provide the steps involved for the same.......
    BW/BI - Recovery Process for SNP data.
    For each SNP InfoProvider,
    create:
    1) Export Data:
    1.a)  Create an export data source, InfoPackage, comm structure, etc. necessary to create an ASCII fixed length flat file on the XI
    ctnhsappdata\iface\SCPI063\Out folder for each SNP InfoProvider.
    1.b)  All fields in each InfoProvider should be exported and included in the flat file.
    1.c)  A process chain should be created for each InfoProvider with a start event.
    1.d)  If the file exists on the target drive it should be overwritten.
    1.e)  The exported data file name should include the InfoProvider technical name.
    1.f)  Include APO Planning Version, Date of Planning Run, APO Location, Calendar Year/Month, Material and BW Plant as selection criteria.
    2) Import Data:
    2.a) Create a flat file source system InfoPackage, comm structure, etc. necessary to import ASCII fixed length flat files from the XI
    ctnhsappdata\iface\SCPI063\Out folder for each SNP InfoProvider.
    2.b)  All fields for each InfoProvider should be mapped and imported from the flat file.
    2.c)  A process chain should be created for each InfoProvider with a start event.
    2.d)  The file should be archived in the
    ctnhsappdata\iface\SCPI063\Archive directory.  Each file name should have the date appended in YYYYMMDD format.  Each file should be deleted from the \Out directory after it is archived.
    Thanks in advance.

    Here's some info on working with plists:
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/PropertyLists/Introduc tion/chapter1_section1.html
    They can be edited with any text editor. Xcode provides a graphical editor for them - make sure to use the .plist extension so Xcode will recognize it.

  • Import images grid does not show file extension

    I use Aperture in a "referenced" mode. At times, I have jpeg files in the same folder as my nef files (which had already been imported into Aperture). The import images list does not have (or I cannot find out how to display) the file name that shows the file extension too. Of the data available, i can scroll to the right and see a lot of different metadata in the list, but not the file extension.
    Does anyone know how to have the file extension displayed in the list that is shown when trying to import?
    thanks

    Aperture can display just about anything you would like to display. The key is putting the correct field into the metadata set for that is being used for the browser or viewer that is active (you can have two ready to go and switch between them or none with a shortcut key)
    This should tell you everything you ever didn't want to know

  • Importing photos without a file extension name?

    I am running Mac Tiger w/ 1.5gig ram. I am using 1.3.1 V Lightroom. I am trying to import 4000 or so .tif photos that I scanned about 8 years ago and did not save the file name as .tif. I am guessing that is why light room will not recognize them and tells me no photos are found when I navigate to the folder. I am hopping someone can tell me how to make this work without having to re-name or add .tif to all of these scans manually? If I can not do this through Lightroom, is there any way in Photoshop to add the .tif file extension automatically?
    Thanks,
    Cathy

    Why not just rename them all? It would only take a second.
    Oh...I don't know how to do it on a Mac, but it's cake on a PC so I assume it is on Mac as well.

  • Anyone know of a way to import .mov file extension files into imovie '09?

    Great forum. Thanks.
    I can't seem to import a movie file with a ".mov" suffixe.
    Most of the older finished work i have is in that format. I have since begun exporting files with the ".m4v" file extension and they are able to be imported.
    Anyone know of any program available which will convert these ".mov" files to something that is more compatible with importing into imovie '09, or perhaps I am completely so asleep at the wheel I missing something staring me in the face?
    Any help either way would be appreciated.

    How about any free conversion programs that would allow me to convert files from .mov to a format that is more compatible with importing into imovie? If not I guess QTP will be the way to go.
    No, the clips were shot using a SONY HD Handycam. The compression occured during the exporting of the finished clip. Instead of using "export movie" under Share in imovie, I used the "Export using Quicktime" option in order to keep the file size down. It did not give me any indication that choosing that option would prevent me from re-importing the finished piece back into imovie for an edit. It seems odd to offer an export option that is not compatible with importing into the the very program being used to export the file.
    I simply want to be able to either re-import these ".mov" files back into imovie '09, or convert them to a file format that will allow me to at least open them in imovie '09. Any help to that end is greatly apprecited.
    Thanks
