File Extension Trouble

hi,
I edit a lot of templates and configuration files with
homesite. Version 4.5 did not have problems to open doubleclicked
files like *.conf, *.tpl, if the extension was add to the options.
Since I am using Version 5 some files can not be opened by
doubleclick although their extension is added to the new Extension
Manager (Editable and In Filter checked). Homesite starts but it
displays a blank page only. I always have to use the internal
explorer to open these files. What can I do?

No web site expert here but I would suggest changing the .m4v to .mp4 and ask one of those friends if they still have problems. .m4v is something I always associate with iTunes and don't really see it used elsewhere.

File extensions and other formats

I'm having trouble with file extensions when saving AW files in other formats. I suspect it may have to to do with a recent upgrade to 10.5
I have (as recommended in the forum) deleted the AW plist files, but it didn't help.
Here are the symptoms:
1. When saving, "Hide extensions" is always checked. I remember it as always being unchecked (which I prefer) . Unchecking it every time is getting annoying.
2. If I uncheck Hide Extensions, I can save as an AW file with its cwk extension, no problem
3. If I change the File Format to something else, like Text, then the Hide Extension box (which I had previously unchecked) is now checked again. The previous cwk extension disappears, but the period remains.
4. If I then uncheck Hide Extensions, a second period appears.
5. If I try to get rid of the extra periods and add txt so that the file is filename.txt, I get an error message that says I can't use the extension ".txt", and that the required extension is "." Using both leaves me with "filename.txt."
6. The only solution has been to let it save with Hide Extension checked, then go into the finder, use Get Info to unhide the extension, and then save it with the correct extension, which is getting to be a real pain in the patoot.
Help, anyone? I'm ready to downgrade back to 10.4.

Downgrading to 10.4 won't help much. The problem lies in AppleWorks being a Classic application that was carbonized to run in OS X. It just doesn't "understand" extensions. Although adding the period in Leopard is new, the problem with the error messages when you save an AppleWorks document as text or Word & add the appropriate extension is not new. I've given up & just add the correct extension in Finder.

Bridge removing file extension after batch rename

Hi All,
I've been having trouble with what appears to be a problem with Bridge in Photoshop CS2. I'm well aware this is an older version but, in this case, I don't think that should matter. Here is my situation:
After batch renaming jpeg files, I've had a problem with Bridge simply stripping off the file extension on all the newly renamed files. This never happens right away...always later. In other words, I'll batch rename a folder full of photos without issue, note that the rename was successful, and then return to that same folder a short time later to find white thumbnails and missing file extensions. This has happened exactly the same way on two different computers - and always with the delay.
This is getting to be very annoying. Has anyone had or heard of a similar issue? Thanks very much...

First use the menu tools / cache / purge cache for folder, if still in trouble restart Bridge holding down option key to refresh preferences

Toggle file extension with Automator

I am looking for the easiest way to automate toggling a file extension between two options. It needs to be the easiest possible solution as it is intended for Architects (specifically working in Revit) who are not the most technically savvy users.
My first thought was to use Hazel. Something along the lines of watching the folder in question (all the files that need to be toggled are in a single folder and its subfolders) and activate Hazel when the label changes to red. the rules would change an RFT file to RFA and RFA to RFT and put the label back to none. Sadly, I don't think I can change the label on Windows files, so that doesn't work. And the delay waiting for Hazel to process would be frustrating.
So then I started looking at Automator, and I can easily do one or the other, but I am having trouble with getting a conditional to work. My workflow right now will Filter by one extension and Replace Text in the Extension Only with the opposite. What I want is to filter by RFT or RFA and then do one of two Renames depending on the value of the Extension, but passing the full file path on to the Rename.
I know I can do this in AppleScript, but ideally I would like to make it work in Automator as this is an envoronment where more of the target audience might experiment and expand on the idea, whereas writing code is unlikely to be something of interest.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

The httpUploadForm (Oracle JSP) tag just generates an HTML form
which has a file upload field:

It is up to the browser on how to present a file dialog. I don't think you can restrict it from the form...
By the way, you can get contextual help by right clicking on the httpUploadForm tag (or any tag) on the Component Palette and selecting help...

File extension getter

Is there a method in the API that will get the file extension off of a file name so that I can filter out certain ones. I'm providing an example just in case I'm using the wrong terminology, which could be why I'm having trouble finding it in the API.
ex: MyProgram.java
and then I only want to print it to the screen if it has the java extension.

"Extension" isn't a cross-platform concept, so Java

I only program on windows............
I normally use this in my code:

All other .xls documents created by Mac Office 2004 retained the .xls file extention when I migrated them over to the new MacBook Air.

I know what happened. When I saved the document I somehow hit the Hide File Extension box. Sorry to trouble this group. I simply resaved it w/o activating the Hide File Extension feature.

Problem with reading file extensions from a Fat 32 Drive

I have been copying image files from my imac 24" OSX 10.6.8 to a Maxxtor One touch external USB drive, the drive is FAT 32 format for a PC. My wife then connects the same drive to her laptop which is running Windows 7. She then sorts the images into different folder gives me back the drive to have more loaded to sort. The problem is when I get the drive back all the image files have a funny little box behind the file extension and the preview icon is blank with a exe in green, the file info says it's a Unix extension.
I tried to remove the little box and open the .tif file or .jpg files and all I get is a image is not readable. The same drive can be mounted back to my wife's laptop and the images open up just fine in Windows media viewer.
What's going on here and how do I fix and prevent this from happening again?

So No one has any ideas on how this is happening and how to go about repairing the problem.
The trouble as I see it comes up once she moves the files into another folder on Maxxtor drive when it's hooked up to the Win 7 laptoop. The Data then is unuseable on my Mac from that point on.
I need to know WHY so I can aviod this from happening again, and how to fix currently there is 250 GB of image files I can not access on my Mac and I still have about 2 TB of image files to go through, and THEY ALL NEED TO BE ACCESSABLE.
Anybody?

Cannot open file with GRD file extension

I received a file with a GRD file extension, but get an error message saying the gradient file is bad or corrupted. I tried 3 separate files, same result.
According to the internet, Photoshoop is supposed to be able to open these files.
Does Photoshop open GRD files, is there a patch I need, or is there another program better suited to open these files?

Mavericks doesn't recognize unknown file extensions as extensions

I did a clean install of Mac OS X 10.9 mavericks recently, and now the darnest things is happening:
I can't seem to get Mac OS X to recognize that unknown file extensions are file extensions.
I don't mean I'm having trouble associating file extensions to apps or any of that elementary stuff. What I mean is if there's no app on my system that recognizes a particular file extension, then Mac OS X is treating it as if it weren't a file extension. For example, in Get Info… I can't hide an extension for an unknown type. This also means:
I can't seem to assign all of these files to a single application as I can for known file types.
In my case, I have a bunch of plain text UTF8 files with a .ctp extension (these are HTML/PHP files that act as templates in a framework I use).
Additionally, the files seem to have old legacy type/creator codes (I think, or some other mechanism). Because:
Finder indicates some are Unix executables.
Finder indicates some are simply "Document."
I've cleaned Launch Services, restarted, added the filetype to BBEdit (hoping it would take ownership and update Launch Services). All to no avail.
I suppose I could create a quick and dirty Mac App and register a new UTI and take ownership of these files, but that seems kind of user unfriendly in general. Does anyone have a better (quicker, easier) solution?

Let me point out another behavior to the above that is puzzling. If I rename a file, e.g., myfile.ctp to myfile.ctp.php then Mac OS X knows that there's an extension, and treats the file properly. Then if I again remove the extension (leaving the .ctp) Mac OS X is treating the file as if it didn't have an extension at all, even though it's ".ctp".

Changed file extension FCP cant find the files

I am working on an old project created with FCP2. The captured source clips do not have a file extension and it was giving me trouble sending clips over to Motion. I changed (manually) the file extension of one file to see what happens. Predictably FCP could not locate the file and I had to relink. The problem is that every time I opened FCP it gave me the same error. So I manually REMOVED the extension. FCP still gives me the same error message! and I have to manually find the file each time I open the project. In the finder the files without an extension show up as a black icon, but the file I messed around with the extension now shows up as a QT icon (even though i deleted the extension). Any advice on how I can get FCP to recognize the file once and for all, and maybe how to better change extensions? gracias!

From the Finder, right click one of the files and choose Get Info.
In that window you will see a section "Name and extension".
There is a checkbox to hide/show the extension.
You can also apply the hide/show option for everything at once in Finder > Preferences > Advanced.
Back to that Get Info window: What application is listed under the "Open With" section?

Photoshop cs5 is not appending file extensions

in previous versions, photoshop appended to the file extension in the fiel save/save as dialog box. it no longer does this and when you save a file it does not append the file extension to the file name, resulting in unknown fiel type.
i am running windows 7 64-bit with photoshp cs5.
it does not make any since to have the option of appending the file extension if the program is not going to do it.

Just tried this out on my Windows 7 64 bit system, and I get the same results using Photoshop.
When I save a file in Photoshop CS5 64 bit with the name 047. Crayon - Abstract the file is saved as 047. Crayon - Abstract without a file extension, no matter what document type I select in the drop-down.
In Word I get the expected result:

SSMS 2014 File Extensions

Why can't I associate file extensions within SSMS 2014? I want .TAB, .PRC, .UDF, etc. to open as a .SQL file would, i.e. connected to a server and with appropriate syntax colour coding.
Adding an extension in Tools\Options\Text Editor\File Extensions has no effect. This is using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 12.0.2000.8.

That's not the problem. Files such as .PRC or .UDF will open within SSMS 2014 when double-clicked from Explorer, however they don't have syntax colouring, don't offer the option to specify a server connection and can't be executed, (not surprising
if they're not connected to a server!).
This looks like a bug that was previously reported in SQL 2012, which if this is the case, is frankly pathetic from MS. Every organisation I've worked for differentiate their database object types by these kind of file extensions, so my current employer
is certainly not unique in this. IF this can't be resolved I'll have to pay for something that will work, such as Quest's Toad product, not ideal when I've already paid a huge sum of money for SQL Server.

I regularly download a zipped csv file, of the format: "filename.csv.gz". As the name does not change, Firefox adds a digit to distinguish it, so for example I get "filename.csv-3.gz". This is a pain as it changes the file extension which means that I cannot open the extracted file without first renaming it. I want to keep an archive of all the files, so deleting them each time isn't really an option, and neither is moving them to a different location each time. Is there any way the naming convention for downloads can be changed?

I think you have to disable it in your Operating system:

The extension is usually .mov, .m4v, or .mp4. But you can't just change the extension. The movies have to be encoded in a particular fomat. Anything downloaded from iTunes or plays in Quicktime player will be fine.
