File from AFP volume vanished!

I had a user yesterday attempt to modify the name of an InDesign CS3 file she had been working on a shared volume and it just disappeared on her. She stated that there was a error "30 or something" and then the file just disappeared. I did a search myself on the (G5 Xserve - 10.4.9) server and I could not locate the file anywhere.
This server has not caused us any problems in the past, has 75% free space on the boot drive and 50% free space on the Xserve RAID the file in question resided on.
Any ideas as to what may have happened to this file and how I might prevent this from happening in the future?

Although I have not seen this behavior with CS3 products, such errors are much more common with CS2 products. Since you didn't actually see what happened, I'd go with the following generic suggestions:
1. Update your server to Mac OS X Server 10.4.11. (I noticed you're still at 10.4.9.)
2. Make sure that InDesign CS3 is up-to-date (5.0.1).
3. Was the user attempting to rename the file using Finder or Adobe Bridge or the Version Cue save panel? (Hint: Just use Finder!)
4. If the user is, in fact, using a CS2 product, the best thing to do would be to copy the file to the local computer, modify it, then copy it back to the server.

  • Can't move files from one volume to another

Using the 1.2 client on SLED, I don't appear to be able to move files from
one volume to another. I have two drive "mappings", each to a
different volume on a NW65SP5 box, but when I try and cut and paste files
I get an error saying "Not on the same file system". However if I drop to
a terminal and just use mv, that works.
    Is this a known issue?

I know there are some issues in Gnome/Nautilus that's being worked upon.
These are outlined in the Readme. For example it's not possible to copy a
folder from Server A to Server B, then delete the folder form Server A.
Finally later on copy the folder back to Server A from Server B.
Also Gnome is leaking file handles, which could be the cause for the
    problem we're getting here.
I'll ask my contact at Novell about this and have him enter it in as a bug

For a workaround you already have a good alternative of using mv in a

  • After Update, cannot delete files from nss volumes

Not sure if this is the same problem caused by the SLES11 upgrade, but after running all the upgrades on an OES11 system, I can see all the nss volumes of the upgraded servers from workstations using the Novell client, and I can copy or create files on these volumes. However, I cannot delete any files, they disappear from the workstation windows explorer when they are "deleted", but an f5 promptly shows the files are still there. I can go into the server as root, and delete the files under Linux with no problems, so this part is working OK.
I am running Novell 11.1 patch 1, and this problem has only been noticeable after the update installation.
I have supervisor rights to the volumes and files, and if I additionally set all the other file rights, I am still unable to delete the files.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Cheers.

I had a similar problem at updating with SP3 on SP4. It was similar, that permission ERASE is not applied to all trustees working through ncp in spite of the fact that it was available.
Has solved a problem that has redefined this permission for trustees on all catalogues.

  • Can't copy files from NTFS volume with Read Only permissions?

I am trying to copy files from an NTFS volume used previously for Windows onto another volume which is Mac OS X Extended...
However, certain files fail to copy due to the fact that I 'don't have permission to access some of the items'...
So I found the items which are causing the issue and viewed the permissions for them which display as 'You can only read'... I presume I am correct taking these as read-only permissions which (to my knowledge) should allow the files/folders to be copied accross to a new volume assuming that the existing volume is left without any changes attempted.
So can anyone suggest to me why this is? And how I might rectify the issue?
    Thanks in advance

Ok I've just worked out that 'You can only read' is referring to the fact that I can only view permissions but not add any. Below this statement, no permissions are listed which may explain why I cannot access the files but does not explain why I can copy/access some files, also with no permissions...

  • Need help getting servername from afp volume mount

Hello I am trying to write a script to take the path of a selected file or folder, put it on the clipboard, and make it a PC friendly link/path to email to pc users in my company. We are sharing files off of 3 servers.
My problem is not with the scripting, but with the fact that all mounted volumes from these servers show up only from their mountpoint in the Volumes folder, i.e. /Volumes/DeptShare/Inbox/ and the like. In the "Get Info" Window I can see the servername (Server: afp://servername/pathtofile/etc) but I cannot find any clean way to call that from a script, to tie a mountpoint (Volumes/DeptShare) to the server it's on, if the user has volumes from more than one server mounted...
So my script can't replace "Volumes" with the proper servername.
Hope Im being clear, happy to elaborate, much obliged for any help.

Hi Bob, thank you so much for the quick response.
Unfortunately system_profiler SPNetworkVolumeDataType isn't revealing a server name for me. I think part of the problem is that it is afp; smb does reveal the server name there. Similarly, when I type "mount" in terminal, the afp server/login for the volume is just listed as a long character string starting with afp_ instead of a username@servername like with smb. With the SPNetworkVolumeDataType all I'm seeing re: server info is this: (I think the first part is just bonjour looking at our domain, I actually can't browse any servers through that. But I included it anyways in case)
    Servers:
    Type: autofs
    Mount Point: /Network/Servers
    Mounted From: map -fstab
    Automounted: Yes
    MyShareName:
    Type: afpfs
    Mount Point: /Volumes/MyShareName
    Automounted: No
Another way I was trying to do this was to try and somehow "ping" a path to filename on each server, to see if the file/path could be checked or return an error and the script could know which server it was on. But I can't figure out the right language to do that either. I can do it like this in terminal:
    \[-a /Volumes/path/file\]
    but not like this:
    \[-a /servername/path/file\]
    or this:
    \[-a afp://servername/path/file\]
so I still don't have the server name tied to the path.
The only other thing I can think of is having the script check the mountpoint name against a list of share names on each server, but that's a little heavier than I was hoping this would be. Plus it drives me nuts that the "Get Info" window can see the servername I can't call it easily somewhere!!

  • Delete File From Mounted Volume

    Hey,
I am trying to delete the "Calendar Cache" files on both my laptop PowerBook G4 and the Mac Pro Quad that I sync my calendars with. I am using ChronoSync and the individual calendars sync fine, but there is a little house keeping needed with the cache file. They need to be deleted on both systems in order to "refresh" the views of the calendars.
So after the sync of calendars, I have the software initiating an AppleScript that deletes both. Here's the script:
+(* PowerBook Files / delete cache file *)+
+(* Please note that both systems have the same username. This may be arise a conflict *)+
    +tell application "Finder"+
    + activate+
+ tell application "Finder" to delete file "Calendar Cache" of folder "Calendars" of folder "Library" of disk "useranthony"+

+ tell application "Finder" to delete file "Calendar Cache" of folder "Calendars" of folder "Library" of disk "/volumes/useranthony"+
    +end tell+
I am having trouble addressing a deletion on the networked Mac Pro Quad.

why send it to the trash — just delete it...
(* PowerBook Files / delete cache file )
    try
do shell script "rm -rf /Library/Calendars/Calendar\\ Cache"

  • Unable to delete the files from CSV volumes on HyperV Cluster

    Hello There,
I have a HyperV failover cluster with CSV Volumes recently i moved some of the VMs to another cluster.
VMs are moved but i still have the VM files on the CSV volumes which are occupying the disk space i tried to delete the VHD files / VM folders which are moved but it doesn't delete the files, please suggest.
This file when i browse it from  a server and delete the file it disappears but when i revisit the folder i find the files still on the disk, i did try to delete the files directly
from the server through command line as it is running server core.

HyperV is good about not allowing you to delete files while they are still in use. You can try to reboot host, make sure all parts if your VM moved to the new location. If that VHD is associated with a VM on any host you will not be able to delete
it. Delete the VM's that may have links to it. Not knowing you configuration could it be a parent disk?  Be carful because if you can't delete it it's likely in use, I've see VHD merge after you delete a VM too preventing you from deleting the files.
You may just want to wait a day or so and see if it free's up. If it is doing a merge reboot will pause and restart it so you won't be able to remove until the merge is done, once you delete a VM and a merge starts there is no way to tell if it's merging,
watch the size and timestamp of the VHD is it changing if it is something is using it.

  • SIMPLE : Move FIle from Mac to SMB system

I would like to move 1 file to a SMB connection. The script works when moving the file from afp to afp. But when I run this script I get a message that the program can't deliver the file.
So I have always connection between the disks (Script that starts every day)
The path is OK but I guess it's something with privileges? Don't get more info about that from scripteditor.
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
    set this_file to ("SERVER1:DATABASES:DATA1:test.txt")
move this_file to ("smb:192.168.000.000:X:DATABASES:DATA1:") with replacing
    end tell
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.
    or ("Volumes:X:DATABASES:DATA1:")

You approaching this in the wrong way.
When you ask the Finder to move a file you specify the source file and the destination directory.
You're trying to provide a URL, and that's the mistake.
If your SMB volume is mounted on the desktop then its path will be /Volumes/SERVER_NAME, and you can just reference it by name, therefore you want something more like:
    tell application "Finder"
      set this_file to "SERVER1:DATABASES:DATA1:test.txt
      move this_file to folder "SERVER_NAME:X:DATABASES:DATA1:"
    end tell
As far as the Finder is concerned, the first element of a path is taken as the volume name.
You might want to add some error checking to ensure the volume is mounted before trying to move the file, too.

  • Reading files from shared mapped folders

How is the correct approach to read files from a volume which maps a shared disk?
I mean, we have the Y:\Folder which maps \\bla_bla\root\folder.
Our application has to read into Y:\Folder.
How do we create a File object which points to Y:\Folder?
    Thanks.

    > We catch a java.lang.NullPointerException
Okay. You know how to debug those, right? Some condition exists that is causing an NPE (that line alone won't do it), so you'll need to do some investigating.
    How to resolve a java.lang.NullPointerException
You'll want to ensure that the directory actually exists, you've mapped it correctly, you have the appropriate permissions to access it, etc.
    Good luck!

  • Files copied from AFP share point are unwriteable by client

This is the same issue as: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8044984
Has anyone found a fix yet? Basically, when copying files from an AFP server, Leopard is not having the file inherit the permissions of the parent folder. It is inheriting the permissions of the file within /Volumes.
I am accessing an AFP share point on a server that has files that are 644 (readable by everyone, but only writable by the owner). I am not the owner. When viewing the AFP volume on my client within /Volumes/whatever the permissions appear to be 400 (unwriteable by the owner, no access to anyone else). When I copy the file over to desktop, the permissions remain as 400 when they should obviously be 600.
What does this mean? Even though I am NOW the owner, and it is on MY desktop, I am unable to write to the file unless I chmod it. Very, very annoying and this behavior is unique to Leopard. Tiger does not mangle the permissions.
The server is ubuntu-8.10-server running Netatalk.
The test clients are Leopard 10.5.5 and Tiger 10.4.11
    On the server:
    $ pwd
    /srv/www
    $ ls -l
    -rw-r--r-- 1 www-data www-data 1024 2008-11-23 23:29 test.doc
    On the Leopard client:
    $ pwd
    /Volumes/www
    $ ls -l
    -r-x------@ 1 sauce staff 1024 Nov 23 23:29 test.doc
    $ cp test.doc ~/Desktop
    $ ls -l ~/Desktop/test.doc
    -r-x------@ 1 sauce staff 1024 Dec 7 00:21 /Users/sauce/Desktop/test.doc

I don't believe this is a problem of leopard in general. i can not reproduce this behavior with any of my afp shares. no matter how i connect (as an owner or as a guest) after I copy something to the desktop it gets standard 644 (not 600) permissions.

  • How can I migrate file shares & permissions from one volume to another on the same server?

I am replacing a storage array and as part of that process, I need to move files/folders and Shares/permissions from one Volume to another volume within the same server.
The server is Windows 2003 file server.  The file transfers are not a problem, moving all 40 shares with permissions etc. is my main concern because in order to maintain everything I need to change the drive letter of the new volume to match the old
one so that links to various resources throughout the network do not break.

    Hi,
If you want to copy files/folders from one Volume to another volume within the same server, you could use the File Server Migration Tool (FSMT) or Robocopy to accomplish your goals. The tool can move all of the files from the shares on your original volume
    to the new volume.
For more detailed information, you could refer to the articles below:
    File Server Migration Toolkit
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2006.10.utilityspotlight.aspx
The File Server Migration Toolkit (FSMT) is a free download available at:

    Robocopy
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc733145.aspx
FSMT and Robocopy will not copy Share permissions but only NTFS permissions. So if the drive letter will not be changed, you can backup and restore the Share permission with steps here:

  • Finding whole mapping from database file - filesystems - logical volume manager - logical partitions

    Hello,
Trying to make reverse engeneering of database files and their physical carriers on logical partitions ( fdisk ).
And not able to make whole path from filesystem down to partitions with intermediate logical volumes.
    1. select from dba_data_files ...
    2. df -k
to get the listing of filesystems
    3. vgdisplay
    4. lvdisplay
    5. cat /proc/partitions
    6. fdisk /dev/sda -l
       fdisk /dev/sdb -l
Problem I have is that not able to determine which partitions are consisten in logical volumes. And then which logical volumens are consisted in filesystem.
Thank you for hint or direction.

    Hello Wadhah,
Before start the discussion let me explain I am newcommer to Oracle Linux. My genetic with dba experience of Oracle is from IBM UNIX ( AIX 6.1 ) and Oracle 11gr2.
First task is to get the complete picture of one database on Oracle Linux for future maintenance tasks and make database more flexible and
    preparing for more intense work:
    -adding datafiles,
-optimize/replace archive redolog files on separated filesystem from ORACLE_BASE
    - separating auditing log files from $ORACLE_BASE to own filesystem
    - separating diag directory on separated file system ( logging, tracing )
    - adding/enlarging TEMP ts
    - adding/enlarging undo
    - enlarging redo for higher transaction rate ( to reduce number of switched per time perceived in alert_SID.log )
    - adding online redo and control files mirrors
So in this context try to inspect content of the disk space from the highest logical level in V$, DBA views down to fdisk partitions.
The idea was to go in these steps:
    1. select paths of present online redo groups, datafiles, controlfiles, temp, undo
       from V$, dba views
    2. For the paths got from the step 1
locate filesystems and for those filesystems inspect which are on logical volumens and which are directly on partitions.
    3. For all used logical volumes locate the logical partitions and their disks /dev/sda, /dev/sdb, ...

  • Migrate File Server data from one volume to another

I am looking for the best way to handle this situation. We have a VHD that has a 4KB cluster size that is getting close to the 16TB mark so no expanding past that due to the cluster size. In the past whenever i needed to pull this off i would preload as
much data as possible with robocopy, then during a maintenance window take the share offline, do a refresh with robocopy then flip everything that i needed to flip drive letter and share setup etc.
I have the space to do a complete copy like this so that is not an issue. But other things to keep in mind are the data is deduplicated so we are talking 20TB total. The other is the backup of the File Server is done at a file level with DPM so DPM will
see this as a new volume and be an issue.
At this point i have time to plan and am just looking for ideas.

  • Excel 2008, read-only file access from network volume

    Hi,
    Need some assistance please.
    I recently setup a Macbook Pro 17" 2.4Ghz (10.5.2) and did a migration from a Powerbook G4. Installed Office 2008.
Excel will not open ANY files from a network volume without giving a read-only access error.
Word is ok and opens files fine.
drag the file from the network to the desktop and it opens ok. drag it back and it copys ok.
so, I created a new user and the problem persists.
I fired up a Macbook running 10.5.2 and Office 2008 and it logged onto the network fine and opened the excel docs just fine.
mmm, ok must be an OS problem.
So, I have just endured waiting for the archive and install to complete on the Macbook Pro and the problem is still there !!!!!
    Help.
Is my only fix going to be a complete erase and start again from fresh ?
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

right then, as it looks like I'm talking to myself....
I have just wiped clean the Macbook Pro.
I installed Leopard from scratch, then installed Office 2008.
Logged back onto the network share, and the read-only error came up again, ONLY in Excel.
    bugger.
Did the same thing with my Macbook and all is fine.
Copy the file to the local hard drive, opens ok.
I then copied the file to another Mac on the network.
    mmmm, opens fine.
    what's the difference....
mmmm, the machine it opens fine from is running 10.4
the machine which hosts all the data is running 10.3.9
    could this be the problem.
Just done a software update check on the 10.3 machine and there are some security updates that need doing.
Going to run that now and see what happens, otherwise I think the iMac running 10.3.9 is going to need to come up to 10.4 and fingers crossed this will solve it.

  • After copying a file from NTFS to HFS volume, file size changed when viewing in Windows

    Hi guys,
I have a Mac Air running Mavericks on a HFS partition and Windows 7 on a BOOTCAMP NTFS partition. I have some files that I want to read/write from/to both systems. Since OS X can't write NTFS and Windows can't write HFS either, and I don't want to use any 3rd-party tools/drivers, I have to adopt a "stupid" way: in OS X, I copy those files from NTFS to its HFS partition, make changes, then switch to Windows and sync them back to NTFS.
The problem is, after I copied a file from NTFS to HFS in OS X, it seemed ok. But when I switched to Windows, the very copied file in HFS partition had its size changed (bigger) although I didn't make any changes to it in OS X yet. This happens to almost every file I copied, text and binary. For those text files, I tried to open it with EditPlus in Windows and EditPlus reports the correct size on the status bar.
    How could this happen?

I am not sure if this is what your seeing but...
The same unaltered file on two different volumes might use different amounts of disk space. This is because a 'disk' is divided in to 'blocks' and a block (also historically known as a 'sector') is a certain minimum size. So if disk-1 has a block size of 512 bytes and disk-2 has a block size of 1024 bytes then a file containing just 10 bytes will use up twice as much space on disk-2 as disk-1 even though it is the exact same file.
Beyond that, Macs can add additional information like Spotlight tags, labels, icons, etc. which make a file bigger. If you are modifying a file then presumably that also implies adding additional content e.g. for a Word document more text and this will make it bigger. Also depending on some programs are configured or designed 'deleting' text may only mark it as deleted and not really delete. This can apply to older versions of Word which has a 'Fast Save' feature, new versions have removed this and do a proper delete.
You would have to give more details like what you are doing to the document, what kind of document, and what the two sizes are.
Finally, there is one other potential difference, some systems and manufacturers use 1024 as a unit for measuring file and disk sizes, some use 1000. It will be the same number of bytes in each case but 1000 bytes in one case would exactly equal 1MB, and in the other it would be 0.9765MB.
