Hello,
How much Autogrowth value to choose is really a tough question to answer unless database growth and other stats are available.It depends on business logic and disk space present on your system.
Identify how much your data grows within week or month see daily backup size to get the exact value.You should not set it too low such that file has to add more files too frequently and not too high such that when you look at DB free space it holds unnecessary

  • How to design SQL server data file and log file growth

    how to design SQL DB data file and log file growth- SQL server 2012
    if my data file is having 10 GB sizze and log file is having 5 GB size
    what should be the size in MB (not in %) of autogrowth. based on what we have to determine the ideal size of file auto growth.

    It's very difficult to give a definitive answer on this. Best principal is to size your database correctly in advance so that you never have to autogrow, of course in reality that isn't always practical.
    The setting you use is really dictated by the expected growth in your files. Given that the size is relatively small why not set it to 1gb on the datafile(s) and 512mb on the log file? The important thing is to monitor it on an on-going basis to see if that's
    the appropriate amount.
    One thing you should do is enable instant file initialization by granting the service account Perform Volume Maintenance tasks in group policy. This will allow the data files to grow quickly when required, details here:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms175935%28v=sql.105%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
    Also, it possible to query the default trace to find autogrowth events, if you wanted you could write an alert/sql job based on this
    SELECT
    [DatabaseName],
    [FileName],
    [SPID],
    [Duration],
    [StartTime],
    [EndTime],
    CASE [EventClass]
    WHEN 92 THEN 'Data'
    WHEN 93 THEN 'Log' END
    FROM sys.fn_trace_gettable('c:\path\to\trace.trc', DEFAULT)
    WHERE
    EventClass IN (92,93)
    hope that helps

  • File growth settings basics

    I am pretty new to MSSQL (not a DBA), and trying to understand the basics of filegrowth settings. None of the databases have a max size set, so presumably they will keep growing as long as their is free disk space. But then I noticed there is file growth
    column in sys.database_files that can be set to a percent. How can you tell when that growth is going to trigger? Say for example a 10GB database with a 10% file growth, something is going to then grow to 11GB? But how can you predict when the growth kicks
    in when there is nothing to say 10% file growth will kick in when the DB reaches XYZ size?

    Autogrowth happens when there is no more space for a transaction to complete.
    It is a good practice and highly recommended not to keep the autogrowth in Percent, simply because the higher the size the bigger the growth.
    I would suggest to set it in MB's say 250 MB and monitor and fine tune. The basic idea is that the autogrowth should be quick and queries should not have to wait while the file growth happens as it hinders performance. You need to find the sweet spot
    here so that autogrowth operation completes fast and increases to a reasonable size such that another autogrowth is not required immediately.
    That being said, we should never rely on autogrowth. Autogrowth is to cater for unforceen situations when a huge data load quickly filled the space which was not anticipated. You should always pre allocate the space for your data and log files depending
    upon the growth predictions.

  • Outofmemory while creating a new object of file with size more than 100 MB

    I have created an application which generates a report by getting the data from our archived files (.zip file).By the time, the application is reaching a file with size more than 100 mb, it is running out fo memory while creating the object of that particular file. Can some one help me by tellin if there id way to resolve this issue?
    Thanks in advance

    If you're getting OutOfMemoryError, the simplest thing to try is to give the VM more memory at startup. For Sun's VM, I believe the default is 64 MB. You can increase this by using the -X args that control the heap size. For example: java -Xms128m -Xmx256m ... etc. ... This says start with 128 MB of heap, and allow it to grow up to 256 MB.
    One thing to consider, though, is do you need that much stuff in memory at once? A more intelligent approach might be to unpack the archive to the file system, and then read a file at a time or a line at a time or a whatever at a time is appropriate for the processing you need to do.

  • Couldn't Upload file with size more than 2K

    Hi,
    i am developing an webapplication where in i have to upload a file.we are using hibernate for data storing and retrieval.problem comes when i am uploading a file with size more than 2k bytes.if the file size lesser than 2k it works fine.i found that its a bug with thin jdbc driver version 9.but i am using 10g jdbc driver.still problem exists. i am not suppose to use oci drivers.
    working on
    OS: windows Xp.
    Apps :weblogic8.1
    DB: oracle 9i
    if anyone has solution plz mailme at [email protected]

    I'm not sure where the issue would be. Are you saying that you are using a 9i driver to access a 10g database? If so, download the newer driver and add it to your WEB-INF/lib directory. Remove the existing driver.
    If, on the other hand, you are using a 10g driver for a 9i database, I would not expect problems. However, you could always download the older driver and try it out.
    Or am I missing something?

  • Solaris 10 - File System Size / Layout

    Hello, Im very new to Solaris OS UNIX world and have a question around the file system.
    I have SUN System with a single 36GB of Hard Disk, and eventually I want to install Oracle 10g on it as a development server for myself.
    My question is around the file system size and layout
    I have installed Solaris 10 and accepted the default file system, which is as below:
    Filesystem size used avail capacity Mounted on
    /dev/dsk/c1t1d0s0 5.0G 3.4G 1.6G 69% /
    /devices 0K 0K 0K 0% /devices
    ctfs 0K 0K 0K 0% /system/contract
    proc 0K 0K 0K 0% /proc
    mnttab 0K 0K 0K 0% /etc/mnttab
    swap 1.5G 1.1M 1.5G 1% /etc/svc/volatile
    objfs 0K 0K 0K 0% /system/object
    /platform/sun4u-us3/lib/libc_psr/libc_psr_hwcap1.so.1 5.0G 3.4G 1.6G 69% /platform/sun4u-us3/lib/libc_psr.so.1
    /platform/sun4u-us3/lib/sparcv9/libc_psr/libc_psr_hwcap1.so.1 5.0G 3.4G 1.6G 69% /platform/sun4u-us3/lib/sparcv9/libc_psr.so.1
    fd 0K 0K 0K 0% /dev/fd
    swap 1.5G 136K 1.5G 1% /tmp
    swap 1.5G 88K 1.5G 1% /var/run
    /dev/dsk/c1t1d0s7 28G 28M 28G 1% /export/home
    What I dont understand is when I eventually install Oracle, where will the directory go for it?
    The /home/export folder is aprrox: 28GB which is now taking up most of the space, and I understand that this is for users, therefore my question is:
    1.Should I have allocated a more space to the root file system for oracle during the OS install?
    2. If so what should I do? (its not a production system and I know it will have to go somewhere on the single drive, Im happy to rebuild as Im still learning the OS).
    Any suggestions?
    Rgds
    D

    Thanks, I do have this but needed info on the file system layout... but I have the info now...
    If you select the auto file system layout on Solaris 10 then it gives the remaining space to the home/export . I have since re-installed, customised the file system layout and have space for the database.

  • Setting the file system size for the emulator

    Hi,
    I am trying to set the file system size of the emulator so I can test what happens when the system is full and I try to write to the file system. I am using WTK 2.5.1 and I went into preferences -> storage and set Storage size to 10KB. But when I run the emulator and check the available size of the root directories using:
    try {
             Enumeration roots = FileSystemRegistry.listRoots();
             while (roots.hasMoreElements()) {
                String dir = (String) roots.nextElement();
                FileConnection fc = (FileConnection) Connector.open( "file:///" + dir );
                System.out.println( "Available Size on " + dir + " : "+ fc.availableSize());
                fc.close();
          } catch ( IOException ex ) {
             ex.printStackTrace();
    }I get the remaining size of my pc's hard drive, not what is remaining from the 10KB I set.
    Can you tell me the correct way to do this? I don't want to fill up my pc's hard drive in order to test this!!

    Has anyone got an answer to this?

  • Expand file system size

    Dears
    Can we expand mounted file system+ size on solris 10 ???, knowing that I'm not using SVM
    Thanks

    And you're asking this question in the Solaris 9 forum?
    The answer is yes in both cases, though. 'growfs' will expand a mounted UFS filesystem.
    It doesn't help you create the space necessary to expand it, though. That can be very easy or very difficult depending on how your storage is allocated.

    Sorry, can't be done.
    If it was any other filesystem than root, you could do by using SVM.
    But root filesystems can't be stripes or concats. Only simple mirrors.
    So SVM isnt going to work.
    If the spare space was after the partiton. You might have been able to do it by the "dirty" method of manually expanding the partition and using
    growfs to expand it. You would have had to do it by netbooting or cd booting since growfs can't be used on the current root.
    But in any case, you can't do that either since the space if before the partition not after it.
    So, reinstalling is your only option..
    Well, If you have a spare disk, you might be able to copy the filesystem over to a larger partition on the other disk, growfs it and boot off that instead.
    You'd want to try it on a test systen first...
