File import questions and folder display questions

I am running LR3 on Win 7 x64. I have a few questions.
I have a hard drive assigned to drive letter "B:\" Why doesn't the file imported see this drive in the list of drives? I have to use the "other drives" and browse every time that I want to add files from this disk. Other drives, including networked drives are fine.
When importing from a main folder and including subfolders, is there a way to filter files in any manner? I never want to import web galleries that I have made in bridge, for example. These files have very small JPG files, thumbnails and web images. Is there a way to exclude them form consideration whilst importing? Is there a way to reveal and show the thumbnails with the folder structure? I don't want to have to browse to every folder individually when I am trying to import all useful images from an entire disk. If LR would at least show the folder structure of the subfolders when you select photos from a top level folder, this would help. How can I do this?
In the library view of folders, how I filter on all files in one disk? I can select a folder under the disk and see just that folder, but LR will not allow me to select the entire disk. Is there a way to do this?
How can I display the entire folder structure in the laibrary panel? Some folders are not showing their top level folders that they are inside of. How do I reveal this information?
In the library module, how can I filter on file dimensions? I thought that I had seen this, but I can no longer find this. Sorting by file dimensions would also be an option to accomplish what I am trying to do. I need to delete all thumbnail images and tiny images from the catalog. Is there an easy way to do this?

No, because you don't import a whole disk, you only import images.  And the toplevel disk bar you see there is the disk where the top level folder is stored, not the entire disk.
Let me make this clear.   When I want to view an entire disk,  I am only wanting to select images that I have already imported, not the entire disk including images that I have NOT imported.
I am not sure if you dont understand what I am saying or what.  If you have folders of images inside a top level folder, you can easily select the top folder to see all subfolders that you have imported.  Why can't I select the disk as the top level folder to see all of the images that I have imported on that disk?
I have a cattelog that has images from 8 different disks.  I use removable drive bays so all 8 disks are not available at any given time.  I just want the ability to select all images that I have imported on a disk, just like you can do at the folder level.  I am at a loss as to why this is a problem.
My point about bridge was that LR is a far superior program for organizing images due to its database.  But LR is lacking in some features that could have easily been put into it.  If bridge can do the type of filtering that it does without a good database engine, then certainly LR could and should do it.  In no way do I want to use Bridge to manage cattelogs with 150,000 images.  That would be insane.  I have no issue with the fact that you have to import your images first to use LR.  It has to be this way to work with the database.  My issue is that the filtering is not nearly as comprehensive as bridge.
I dont need help with my workflow.  Back when I shot many of the images that I am importing now into LR, there was no lightroom.  My workflow was much different back then than it is now.  My comments were that I assumed that LR could do things that it cannot, not that I needed help with my current workflow.  Much of the issues that I have now with LR are due to the old workflow and trying to import only the raw images.

  • Nokia E6 White question and one little question

    Hi,
I am planning on buying the Nokia E6 in white, but I am really worried about the fact whether the keypad or the cover of the memory card and USB slot will get dirty. (yellowish)
And my second question: The Nokia E6 is provided with a leather case in some countries, but I am about to buy one E6 and I think it's not provided here in the Netherlands. I wanted to know if anyone knows the exact model number of the leather case provided in the box, so I can buy it separately.
    Thanks!

Hi, I have bought the white E6 from the Netherlands, and you're right - there is no case (and no memory card).
The USB slot shouldn't get too dirty that easily since it is not white, but silver (same as the back cover).
Haven't had the handset long enough to know if the keys get dirty.  The finish on the keys is a matt white (not glossy/shiny).
One downside of the white (and possibly silver) is that when you set the backlighting on the phone to a low level (to save more power), it is quite difficult to the the keys.  I have had to set the backlight to at least medium so that the light is bright enough against the white keypad.
I must the colours offered are rather boring (white/silver/black) but presumably it is because it is sold as a business phone.

  • Heat, Fan, and dimming display questions

I have a hot running MacBook Pro. I've had the unit returned for service and only one of my four issues was resolved. The unit is going back again for service.
I seemed to irritate the last tech support person by asking questions about the heat issues. Maybe some people here can help answer the question that changed his tone for the worse during the remainder of the support call.
Can you easily hear the fan(s) when they operate or do you have to put your ear real close to the laptop to hear the fan(s) operate?
I asked because I couldn't tell you what a fan sounds like on this machine. I'm on my second motherboard and I cannot feel any air flow from all those vents (or anywhere else for that matter) along the back of the laptop near the display hinge.
Has anyone found a correlation between a dimming display and heat? What happens is the display dims the equivelent of bringing down the brightness down three levels and after a few seconds it brightens back up.
The laptop is going in for a second repair for the following reason:

Hello I just wanted to give you some insight on the screen dimming. If you have not unchecked the box at the bottom of the display pane is system prefs the display will dim when ever it scences a lower light situation. I have attached a picture. HERE

  • Capture time and folder organization question

    hi there,
i just imported a a ton of photos to lightroom this past weekend.  a number of photos are dated incorrectly.  i changed the dates with "edit capture time."  now, i want the files to be resorted into appropriate dated folders.  does lightroom do this or do i have to manually move the images from a folder labeled with the old date to a folder labeled with the new date?
also, when i organize by capture time, the photos in library are still not in chronological order by capture time.  i am using lightroom 2 on mac.
    thanks!

There'll be one top folder, but LR wants to organize by date as you import, which is just right for most, and I am not suggesting eschewing this. Just on a mass of older images, etc., I personally wouldn't bother sorting them by date/folder unless you have a compelling reason, such as one's boss saying "that's how WE do it here...."
I am a bit of a renegade, perhaps, in that I never use camera generated names/numbers*, and usually name the images after I've culled and edited, and (shudder) change the name of the folder from date to event or location. There are brilliant folk who'll say this is wrong, but it works for me. Nicely!
    * If you're backing up at the same time as Import, you're pretty much stuck with the camera numbers, afaik.

  • MacBook Pro 13" and Thunderbolt Display Question

I am considering purchasing a 13" MacBook Pro to use with the Thunderbolt display.  I do a fair amount of photoshop work and am concerned that the lack of a dedicated video card and the dual-core as opposed to quad core in the 15" will be a limiting factor. I would be purchasing the i7 with 8GB of ram in the 13".  Has anyone used this combination (Thunderbolt and i7 13" Pro) for Photoshop, and how has it performed?
    Thanks!

Thank you for your response, I will definitely way that option more heavily. I was hoping to be able to accommodate the 13" form factor. As a student I bring my computer everywhere so the smaller size would have been nice.
    I
f I may waste a tad more of your time, is the reason behind the GPU and quad core because of photoshop or the 27" monitor in general? The only reason I ask is that I am only a casual photoshop user so that alone may not sway me, but if powering the thunderbolt display is of a concern for the lesser device then the decision becomes much easier.
Sorry to ask so many questions, I know a decent about computers but I am not too familiar with the thunderbolt adaptor and as such am not sure how that interacts with the GPU and such.
    Thanks again!

  • Blank grey screen and folder with question mark at power up

When I turn on my computer, the screen goes grey and makes loud, unusual noises. There was no hint of a problem last time I booted up my macbook and I can think of nothing that would have caused any structural damage to the computer. An icon with a folder and a question mark inside of it appears after a minute or so of the computer being in this blank, grey state. If you could give me any information about what might be wrong with the computer I'd greatly appreciate it.

Insert the 1st install disk and boot up while holding down the C key. Then when you get to the second screen for installation look in the menu bar under Utilities and run disk utility. Verify your drive and repair it if it needs it. You have something corrupted or your hard drive may have crashed.

  • Networking And Target display Question.

If I have my 2011 iMac all set up and running as a slave using the ethernet port can I then use my iMac's display with the other TB compatible Mac using target display mode.
This would be for the Vienna Ensemble Pro 5 where the iMac would be used for the sample libraries.

    Hi Phillip,
No idea & can't test, but it should be safe to try.

  • IMac 20 and 24" Display Question

What is the difference between the 20 and 24 inch display?
I understand a difference may exist in that the 20 inch is a TN and the 24 is another type display. This is new to me.
Can someone offer a brief explanation of which is a "better" display? I am not gaming and am not a pro user but want the nicest display possible.
If both are benchmarked the same, then the tie breaker would be the display. IS bigger better?
    Thank you.

My wife & I debated the $300.00 difference, & we finally decided to go for the 24". Great decision. The display is huge & gorgeous. I have a 20" iMac G5 at work and it now seems small. We did, however, decide that the extra cost for the 2.8 ghz was not worth the extra cash, so we went with the 2.4. No freezing, artifacts, or anything else (so far).
DEFINITELY get the 24" - you will be thrilled!

  • MacBook and Cinema Display Question

I have a MacBook and need to know if it will work with a 30 inch Cinema Display.  I think it will, but need to check since I have one that can be sent to me. The Thunderbolt displays do not work with the MacBook, which I did not realize until I tried it.  My MacBook is about 3 years old.
Any answers are appreciated.  Thank you so much!

I should clarify that my MacBook is a white MacBook, was probably new in 2009, and worked perfectly fine with a 24 inch Cinema Display.  That one died and I can either spend $600 on getting it repaired, buy a refurbished one, or use a 30" one that a friend has and is no longer needing it.  It's good to have friends, I just want to make sure it will work before they send it.

  • Iphoto 11-File import RAW and JPEG

iPhoto 11, Snow Leopard 10.6.7 RAW supported and Sony DSLR A300 supported...
My question is simple: I understand (i think) that when I import pictures into iPhoto that they will be converted to JPEG. I have a number of JPEG files. But if I shoot something in RAW (.arw) and import it, does iPhoto 11 import the RAW image AND make a JPEG or does it just take the RAW photo and NOT convert to JPEG?
    Cheers-
    Kelly

    Greetings Kelly,
Read this help menu item from iPhoto for "RAW" as it may help shed some light: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iPhoto/9.0/en/pht41627265.html
iPhoto imports RAW files from compatible cameras and stores the RAW files in it's library.
It creates JPEG refrence files for viewing on screen to speed up performance which is also stored in the library.
If you edit an image, the edits are made on a JPEG copy that iPhoto creates (you can also have it save them as .tiff which is mentioned in the link above) and stores it in it's library.
    Cheers.

  • H8-1520T Case question and OS transfer question

Hello all in the forums here.
My first question is this- I have an HP H8-1520T and noticed on the back next to the main system fan there are what look like metal shields that you can take out. I was wondering if this is what they truly are, and if so what the purpose would be. I noticed it was located close to the pump fan pins on the motherboard, so I can only assume it would be to allow for a radiator if one wanted to water cool their system. If this is the case, what size and thickness radiator would fit, because I want to water cool my system but don't want to have to buy a new case if I dont have to.
My second question is this- I recently bought a SanDisk Ultra II SSD for my boot drive. I was wondering how to transfer the OS from my 1TB Seagate Barracuda to the SSD. I have already tried two programs, Paragon's Migrate OS to SSD 4.0 and Seagate's DiscWizard software, both to no prevail. I was wondering how to transfer it.
    Thanks

  • Certview Question, and 1Z0-052 Question

    Hello All,
I recently passed 1Z0-051. Very pleased with that. I have been reading Oracle press book for almost 1 year, and preparing for 1Z0-052 for almost 1 year. I have 1 year experience of Oracle database experience, integrating it with coldfusion for web design.
1st issue) I have logged into certview previously succesfully a few days ago. Tried today, and it wanted me to "authorize" a second time, my creds from the pearsonvue website, which I did, exactly as name/email/city are listed on pearsonvues website. So I put the information in,,1,,2,,,3 times, locked me out, and everything was matched up correctly.
Why did it ask me a second time for authorization, when I linked the account/creds two days ago?
2nd issue) Any last minute tips before attempting the 1Z0-052? I have been using 11G at home for a year installed on linux.
$195 is quite a bit, so hence the reason I want good results.

Why did it ask me a second time for authorization, when I linked the account/creds two days ago? One possibility is that you were using different Oracle SSO's .... some have used one for work and one for home.
Another is that Certview was in a maintenance period.
A third is that Certview has a mind of its own and will do this from time to time.

$195 is quite a bit, so hence the reason I want good results. The Oracle Press book practice questions / tests should give you a good idea of the standard you're at providing you haven't used them over repeatedly and have meorised the questions. (In which case buy the sybex book or get SelftestSoftware practice tests). But I think there comes a point where one has to take the exam.
Other than that use normal test preparation good practice.
eg: Ensure you know where the Test Center is and plan to get there in good time and decide what you going to do if you get there early!!! ... etc. etc. Be aware you to plan your test and to be aware of how to handle questions that you dont know (eg marking them for review later etc).
There is also a possibility you may be able to grey out answers you wish to disocunt by right clicking on them ... read the intro pages to the exam carefully to see it this is available. this feature is not available on some simulators. It may or may not be present for your exam.
Chec kthe exam topics on the oracle website exam page to ensure they have not changed.

  • Pic question and gingerbeard update question??

When I save a pic or something where is it saved to?  Ive looked on my SD card and I cant find it.  I want to save pics from APPS and the internet.  I cant seem to find them anywhere...  Please help...
Is the gingerbeard update something I should look into getting?  Does it update automaticallly or do I have to go get it somewhere.  I have the incredible and am wondering if its something I need to get??  Thanks everyone...

If we get gingerbread it will be pushed to your phone over the air and you will get a notification to install it, but we don't know when or if we will get it. I'm not sure what the directory is for pics. Do you have a file manager app (like astro or estrong)? I believe you need to use one to find the folder with your pics, unless you plug it in to a pc and view the sd card that way. Also, is your camera set to save the pics to the sd card? If not then they will be in the phone's memory.

  • Placing Illustrator and InDesign Files, Importing text and forms into Library

Firstly, is there any way at all to maintain the working elements of an Illustrator or Indesign file if placing in Muse, is it even possible?
Example: I have a fully created website layout with text boxes and vector images saved in Illustrator.
I'm wondering, can this be bumped to Muse using the 'Library' feature as a whole, as elements like the contact form were in the Katie's Cafe tutorial?
I understand how that works for singular images, but is it at all possible with a complex image that contains both text and vector, or does this image need to be sliced up and saved as individual elements. Is there anyway to extract the text boxes from Illustrator or InDesign as they are? How are working text boxes created in InDesign as mentioned in the Katie's Cafe tutorial?
Thanks so much in advance, and sorry if this is totally obvious!

    Hm, okay.
How would I know if the file is corrupt?
Well, you often don't, until it crashes and is unrecoverable. Then it's too late. But "insanely swollen file size" is a symptom. However, I can't know if your file size is reasonable or not, depends on the content, and it sounds like your content is pretty heavyweight. For instance - I thought it was possilbe to strip out custom brushes when saving AI files to bring file size down. I've never touched an AI file that was too large because of the number of swatches. So, depending on how much you have in there, then maybe your two-gig file isn't on the verge of crashing and burning.
I did inherit it, but have since used it as a template and "saved as" various versions. I'm not really sure if it started in 5 or not.
Cool trick: Click on Help, then hold down Control when you click on About. This will take you to a "Component Information" screen, and in the lower-left-hand corner you can see the Document History. So you can learn if you inherited a file that started in CS5. Or in CS3, or in PageMaker.
General best-practices as recommended by forum regulars is to finish a file in the format in which it started. If a file has to be moved from an older version to a newer version, then exporting IDML or INX before moving is advised. This is because of a lot of anecdotal evidence that opening up old files in newer versions and then doing a bunch of work is correlated with file corruption.
I have not tried to export-to-IDML-and-reopen, but I certainly will. What does this do exactly?
Well, it'll do a bunch of different things. It'll reinterpret the file format, which can strip out corruption. It'll strip out all image previews. If there is cruft in your file, then this will probably remove it.
