File permissions and ownership questions

Hi all,
I'm a bit confused by the file permissions in Snow Leopard. In particular, whenever I create a folder, there is always a group permission assigned to "staff".
1) how is "staff" different from "everyone"?
2) how come if I remove the group permission for "staff", I can't add it back? It doesn't seem like the "staff" group actually exists (it doesn't show up in the user/group dialog)
And finally, does anyone know why ownership is so weird on removable drives? It seems like the "owner" of a folder created an a removable drive is just whoever is logged in at the time. So, if I log in as UserA and do an ls, I see the owner as UserA. If I log in as UserB, I see the owner as UserB.

staff is the default group that includes all users with accounts on your computer. everyone means everyone including remote users connecting as guests if you have file sharing on who don't have user accounts on your computer.
2) how come if I remove the group permission for "staff", I can't add it back?
in short, because GUI for changing permissions is really messed up in snow leopard.
It doesn't seem like the "staff" group actually exists (it doesn't show up in the user/group dialog)
it does exist, it's just not offered as an option in that dialog. see my comment above about GUI being messed up.
Furthermore, please never delete staff from permissions this way. on top of being messed up GUI for changing permissions is buggy in snow leopard and when you remove staff from permissions that way the group on the item in question changes from staff to wheel (which is why you have to unlock the lock with your admin password in order to do this). this is wrong in most instances as only root belongs to the group wheel.
And finally, does anyone know why ownership is so weird on removable drives? It seems like the "owner" of a folder created an a removable drive is just whoever is logged in at the time. So, if I log in as UserA and do an ls, I see the owner as UserA. If I log in as UserB, I see the owner as UserB.
it's not true for all removable drives. it's only true if a drive has ownership disabled (can be done in the get info popup) or if it's formatted FAT. all thumb drives are formatted FAT by default. FAT is an old windows file system which does not understand POSIX permissions and treats everything as read+write by everybody.

  • File permissions and ownership in the /Applications directory

    Hello,
I've noticed that the application files in /Applications have a mix of the following ownerships:
    root:admin
    myusername:admin
    501:admin
I understand that 501 refers to the first user created, however the current username that I use is not the first one that was created.
I find that often when I am deleting an app, I am prompted for a password.
I also just tried to edit a text file in an application subdir and could not save the changes due to lack of permission. The owner was 501 and I had to use sudo to chown it.
What is the ownership supposed to be on all of these files?
    -Travis

    Travis B wrote:
So the real oddity is that there are thing in there that are owned by 501 and tbarth? They should all be root?
No. Only those applications that were installed by a correctly designed installer should be owned by root. That is a fairly small subset of all current applications. Most applications will be owned by whomever dragged the application into the Applications folder.
Should I chown them all to root:admin? Or root:root? Or just leave it all as is...
I think you should leave them. Regardless of who owns them, you don't need to be creating any text files in there.
Please be clear on this fact: if you do any sort of chown or chmod on anything in /Applications you are running a distinct risk of rendering your system inoperative.

  • File permission and ownership problem

I am trying to resolve some file permission and ownership problems that are left over from using Migration Assistant to set up my iMac from an older iMac. In a terminal session when I use the ls -l command I'm getting a file/directory owner of 504. Sometimes the group is admin and sometimes the group is also 504. I think this is because the owner of the file on the old computer is not present in the new one but I want to be sure before I just change the owner and group.

The following should give you an indication->
    id -un 504
    or you could try->
dscl . list /Users UniqueID | grep 504  && echo "User exists" || echo "User does not exist"

  • File permissions and Adobe Software

We have a problem with file permissions and adobe software. In Illustrator and Photoshop I can open files from the 10.4.7-server that are opened by another user at the same time and in Indesign, in the contrary, I cannot open any file on the server. Always error "no rights" or "is opened by another user", also if logged in as admin.
In MS Word for Mac we have no problem, if a file is open (Word) and I try to open the same file on another workstation, error "is open" is showed correctly. We have 3 10.4.7-Workstations and a 10.4.7-server on a G4/800. Can anyone help?

Assuming you're connecting via AFP, this may help:
    1. Start with current updates: Update your client and server software to version 10.4.8. Update Photoshop CS2 to 9.0.2, Illustrator CS2 to 12.0.1, and InDesign CS2 to 4.0.4.
    2. In Illustrator and Photoshop I can open files from the 10.4.7-server that are opened by another user at the same time.
This is actually not normal. Instruct your users to avoid opening files simultaneously, as this will result in lost data.
If you have SMB/CIFS access to the same share point, disable oplocks; allow only strict file locks.
If you've disabled the lock manager for AFP, re-enable it. It's enabled by default in /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist.
    3. For InDesign documents that won't open, delete their corresponding lock files. Whenever InDesign CS or CS2 opens an .indd or .inx file, it creates a corresponding .idlk file that simply serves to flag the .indd/.inx file as open. If File.indd won't open, locate and delete File.idlk and try again. The lock file will be stored in the same folder as the document.
    4. Double-check your file permissions. Start by verifying the filesystems (Disk Utility/First Aid tab/Repair Volume button) of the server volume that houses the affected share point(s). You'll have to disable sharing to do so.
Ensure that your permissions are correct, and adjust them as necessary. Consider using an ACL to apply read/write access for users or groups, because ACLs offer the superior inheritance model. See my ACL Tips post (http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=1732788) if you haven't already.

  • Can't boot into OS X.6 after changing permissions and ownership

    Hi,
I'm in the process of migrating to OS X.7 - booted into Lion I changed permissions and ownership on the other disk that I use to startup into OS X.6. I set it to "ignore ownership on this disk" and granted read and write access to "everybody". Restarting my Mac into OS X.6 now doesn't work anymore - the grey spinning circle spins forever.
Does anybody know how to fix this so that I can boot back into OS X.6? I'd be real thankful...
    Best
    Jurgen

Thank you for your reply. I was able to repair permissions on the failing disk using the OS X.7 Lion recovery volume - quite amazing that one can do that.
However the internal disk of the iMac that has OS X.6 on it still fails to boot.
Any other suggestions? I'm a bit desperate to use OS X.6 because a few apps that are vital to me do not run under OS X.7 (they need Rosetta).

  • Problems with file permissions and authorization/authentication and hostname (using ddns)

    hey guys!
decided to rewrite this entire question...it was too hard to understand what i want.
I have a student version of server 2012 r2. I installed like 50 roles, and then deleted 90% of them. i have....a bunch of webserver roles, almost all of them i bet, and misc others. no AD or dns roles..i deleted those i thought they might have been the problem.
I connected this to a dynamic dns courtesy of No-ip.com. example.ddns.net
when installing a blog or cms, and I am asked for the server name (for database) do i use localhost, 192.168.1.###, my router ip, computer name, example.ddns.net, or something else?
Same question above for iis bindings! What do i put for the host?
secondly, what file permissions do i set up? I can't seem to access umbraco, for example, from outside the network unless i use windows admin credentials in the physical path credentials via IIS advanced options.

    Hi,
The issue is related to IIS, I suggest you ask for help from IIS forum for better and accurate answer to the question.

  • Serious trouble with permissions and ownership

My archive/install/Migration Assistant upgrade to Leopard has turned into a nightmare concerning 'ownership' of my files and hard drives.
To make a long story short, after many many problems wherein files and drives were 'owned' by me but unaccessible to me (often with two ownership qualities attributed to me- one "Read & Write" and the other "Custom", a situation I could not edit or change) I restarted with the installer disc and repaired permissions on my Leopard startup partition. It took several hours and went through thousands of files identifying "ACL" problems.
Now all my drive icons except for my startup disc have locks on them and I can't write to them even though I supposedly have permission. Carbon Copy Cloner fails to copy to the locked drives*.
This situation now obtains EVEN WHEN I BOOT IN TIGER: my drives have little lock icons on them. I thought I could revert to Tiger to fix this, but apparently I'm stuck. I need to know how to "unlock" my drives (and eventually return to Tiger).

  • Aperture Exporting JPEG's from RAW: file size and quality questions?

    Hey Everyone,
So, I'm using Aperture 2 and I've got some questions about exporting from RAW to JPEG. I shoot with a Nikon D70 so original RAW files are 5-6mb in size. After doing some basic post processing when I export the pics at "full size" with picture quality of 11 out of 12 then the resulting JPEG is about half the file size of the original RAW file. For example a 5.6mb RAW becomes a 2.6mb JPEG. The resolution in pixels per inch and and the overall image size remain unchanged. Have I lost picture quality due to the exporting JPEG being smaller in file size?
My friend who works with me prefers to edit in Photoshop and when he follows the same workflow his saved JPEG from the identical RAW file in Photoshop is minimally smaller in file size, say 5.6mb to 5.3mb. He's telling me that my Aperture edited photos are losing quality and resolution.
Is he right, are my pics of lesser quality due to being a smaller file size? I've always been told that the quality of a picture is not in the mbs, but the pixel density.
I've bee told that Aperture has a better compression engine and that the resulting files are of the exact same quality because the PPI and image size are the same. Is that what explains the much smaller file sizes in Aperture?
I tried changing the picture quality in the export menu to 12 out of 12, but the resulting JPEG then becomes larger than the original RAW at over 7mbs.
Can someone please help me understand this better? I don't want to lose picture quality if that is indeed what is happening.
Thanks in advance for your help.

JPEG is a "lossy" file compression algorithm. Whether Aperture or PS, *every time a JPEG is saved some loss occurs*, albeit minimal at the 11 or 12 level of save, huge losses at low save levels. Some images (sky, straight diagonal lines, etc.) are more vulnerable to showing visible jpeg artifacts.
*Both of you are losing image data when you save to jpeg.* IMO the differences between the apps is probably just how the apps work rather than actually losing significantly more data. The real image data loss is in using JPEG at all!
Is he right, are my pics of lesser quality due to being a smaller file size?
    I doubt it.
I've always been told that the quality of a picture is not in the mbs, but the pixel density.
The issue here is not how many pixels (because you are not varying that) but how much data each pixel contains. In this case once you avoid lossy JPEG the quality mostly has to do with different RAW conversion algorithms. Apple and Adobe both guess what Nikon is up to with the proprietary RAW NEF files and the results are different from ACR to Apple to Nikon. For my D2x pix I like Nikon's conversions the best (but Nikon software is hard to use), Aperture second and Adobe ACR (what Photoshop/Bridge uses) third. I 98% use Aperture.
I tried changing the picture quality in the export menu to 12 out of 12, but the resulting JPEG then becomes larger than the original RAW at over 7mbs. Can someone please help me understand this better? I don't want to lose picture quality if that is indeed what is happening.
JPEG is a useful format but lossy. Only use it as a _last step_ when you must save files size for some reason and are willing to accept the by-definition loss of image data to obtain smaller files (such as for web work or other on-screen viewing). Otherwise (especially for printing) save as TIFF or PSD which are non-lossy file types, but larger.
As to the Aperture vs. ACR argument, RAW-convert the same original both ways, save as TIFF and see if your eyes/brain significantly prefer one over the other. Nikon, Canon etc. keep proprietary original image capture data algorithms secret and each individual camera's RAW conversion is different.

  • SVN Source - File permissons and format issues

    Hi,
I checked out source from svn repository and tried to build, permissions on files are wrong, is it SVN doing or repository have files with that permission?
I also noticed, tomcat sh files have again wrong permission (no execute or read) and also in dos file-format, which means it would throw ": bad interpreter: No such file or directory" error, if executed on *nix boxes. I have to convert those using dos2unix..
BTW! things failed even when I was trying using sudo...

Wrong in what way ? On which files ? On what O/S ? What SVN revision ?

I had no such problems in my SuSE or Unbuntu Linux boxes.

  • Library Share Permissions and Ohter Questions

I am setting up Library Server and want to know little bit about it:
    1.  What are the permissions required on the share of library server? which service accounts, computer accounts or cluster objects to add? and what permissions?
    2.  Is there any limitation with respect to name of the share that it should not have any spaces in the name?
    3.  Is there any limitation as how many folders inside a folder would be listed in the console?  I have around four folders inside the main shared folder and only two are showing in the console.  Can it only contain packages or single file
and not extracted ISO images?  The folders inside the main shared folder that is showing only shows bit of the actual content of the folder.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for the replies.
    1.  But, when we create a folder and share it to be seen by the VMM Console, with what permission should be shared i.e. everyone read only or vmm admin account read only, etc.
    2.  So, it is better to use underscores on all folders at least just to be safe.  correct me if I am wrong.
    3.  Actually, I have made a folder of Setups which has folders like applications, operating systems and drivers, etc. folders with respective content in them.  When I am adding it as library share, it shows some of
the content not all of it.  Should I just add .cr to the parent Setup folder or all the folders inside it?

  • File Permissions and security - sharing with FW externally booted Linux

I want to be able to access my Music folder and others on my Powerbook's internal HD from my Linux OS (Kubuntu 9.04) which boots from an external Firewire drive.
It worked fine when I changed the permissions in "Others:" to "Read Only", but I am afraid that this makes me vulnerable to having files stolen so I changed it back... Am I correct in assuming this?
Is there a way that I can add Read/Write permissions to my Linux user account?
    Thanks ahead of time.

I did this with NFS, but I haven't tried it from a shared harddrive.
how should I do if I want the permissions to work in both OSes?
You can change the permissions of files and directories in either OS.
I suggest that you make a complete backup of your system. You should create a second administrator account from which you use to change your original account. You should log out your original account before proceeding.
    Mac OS X ... harddrive -> Applications -> Utilities -> terminal
    Ubuntu ... Applications > Accessories > Terminal
    Your current user is:
    echo $USER
    Let's assume myuser
To find out your UID and GID do:
    ls -ln
    ls -l
Or, you can use the id command.
    id
compare the output and write down what you find.
You best use the numeric value for your userid. In this case it is 500. To list all the files owned by a userid do:
    sudo find / -user 500 -exec ls {} \;
    # adding a -x before the / limits the search to the current file system.
    Mac OS X ... harddrive -> Applications -> Utilities -> NetInfo Manager
In the middle column is the function. Pick users then select your user. Click on the lock at the bottom of the panel. Go into the property list and change UID and GID.
    In the Ubuntu terminal,
    man 5 passwd
... will give you the format of the passwd file.
    sudo nano /etc/passwd
... the format is user-name, password, uid, gid, ...
    control-o
    ... to save
    control-x
    ... to quit
The groups are defined in /etc/group
    cat /etc/group
Now change the UID and GID of all files:
You best use the numeric value for your userid. In this case it is 500.
    sudo find / -user 500 -exec chown 1100:211 {} \;
/* Where chown has the format of chown uid:gid file-name */
/* adding -print before -exec lists the files that will be changed. */
/* You may want to leave off :211 if your uid & gid are not paired. */
/* Notice the -exec runs another command on the found file. */
    sudo find / -group 20 -exec chgrp 211 {} \;
On the Mac you get into single user mode by holding down command-s when you poweron your machine. Just in case you run into problems.
On Mac OS, there are a few files that have the old uid as part of their names. The .Trashes file will be only removal media and maybe everywhere.
    /.Trashes/501
    /Library/Caches/com.apple.IntlDataCache.501
    /Library/Caches/com.apple.IntlDataCache.sbdl.501
    /Library/Caches/com.apple.user501pictureCache.tiff
On Linux, there are a few files that have the old user name as part of their file and folder names:
Here is another explaination of the procedure. ( It misses some file because the auther checks only the most likely places.

  • Shared file system and other questions

    Hi,
Is shared file system common for all WL in the cluster or each WL has its
              own one.
Next questin is connected with proxy server.
I'm not sure if there should be one proxy server for two servers working in
one cluster or each server should has own proxy server (I mean WL proxy
              server).???
In my opinion there should be one proxy server which redirect requests to
server in cluster using some balancing method. But when I read documentation
about cluster's architectures I saw the picture where each WL cluster server
had proxy own server. I'm not sure if this picture showed only outline of
architecture or it was real solution???
Is it better to install another proxy server (for example Apache) than WL
              proxy server?
In previous questions I asked if it is possible to replic static classes,
fields etc. Prasad Peddada told that it is not replicated. But I wonder if
there exists some method to force replicating it.? Maybe we can implement
              some method and run it?
              Thanks,
              Best regards,
              Robert

    Mike.
In WLS51 cluster, it is better to specify different workingDir for each
server. You can create a weblogic.properties in your per-server directory
and add jspc properties in that file.
              Cheers - Wei

  • File name and place question.

How would you file the following. I have a series to edit, so for example you have "Show 1" and within this you have V.1, V.2 and V.3.All 3 versions share the same beginnings, but are then different from half way through. You also have 2 sources of HDV from different cameras.
Does this make sense? I have been opening a scratch folder for say "Show 1" and then within that folder opening 2 more folders named "Cam 1" and "Cam 2" and then sending the appropriate HDV footage to these folders.
Does the fact that these folders are "Scratch" folders have any technical significance over and above any other type of folder?

I would make a separate project for each show in the series. This will automatically create a separate folder inside capture scratch for each show. All the media for that show should go into that folder.
The problem occurs when you have media that's shared in multiple shows. There are different ways to do this, but it depends a great deal on the specifics of your series and how you work. There is no one way to do this.

  • Where do Itune files live and other questions

I know Itunes is a media player, but does it also hold the files.  Mostly for grins, I tried to copy a talk in Itunes to another folder and it would not let me.  Is it true it does not allow for this?
I gather that for music it is one-way synching, from (in my case) the MBP to the (in my case) Iphone.  If I want to delete something from the Iphone and have to uncheck it on the computer and resynch?

"I gather that for music it is one-way synching, from (in my case) the MBP to the (in my case) Iphone."
    Correct.
"If I want to delete something from the Iphone and have to uncheck it on the computer and resynch?"
    Correct.
The iphone is not a storage device.  It simply mirrors the selected content of your computer.

  • Customize alerts on ALERT.log file? And another question

We just setup and have started to use Grid Control. So far, I have been very pleased with what I have seen.
    Just some questions though.
Is there a way to customize the "Generic Alert Log Error Status"?
Can we have exclusions for that alert? We get are getting messages on alerts for a bug that exists in one of our DB's. If we can some how exclude this particular error, that would be great. That possible?
Secondly, can you schedule checks on a database to check the state of the database? This is something I would like to do if possible.
    THanks.

    Go to targets - databases - <database>
On this page on the left side, you'll see a heading "Diagnostic Summary"
    The you'll see something like:Alert Log <date>
Click on the date, go to the bottom of the page and click on "Generic Alert Log Error Monitoring Configuration"
Here you can configure exactly what alert log messages you want.
Yes, depending on what it is you want to do. Look at User Defined Metrics, Reports and possibly Jobs to see what fits best with want you want to do.
