File retrieved by SharedStorageAccessManager.CopySharedFileAsync is empty

I have a really strange problem in my Silverlight WP 8.1 app, which some users reported to me, but which I cannot reproduce myself.
My app registers a file handler to open e-mail attachments. The file handler is working so far, however some users report that the files are empty in the app or contain the string "NIL". I tried a lot of debugging in the emulator and on my phone,
but I have not been able to reproduce this. Therefore, I added some "client-side debugging facilities" into the app. My code in the file handler looks like this:
var storageFile = await SharedStorageAccessManager.CopySharedFileAsync(ApplicationData.Current.LocalFolder, localFileName, NameCollisionOption.ReplaceExisting, fileToken);
var fileProps = await storageFile.GetBasicPropertiesAsync();
using (var ras = await storageFile.OpenReadAsync())
using (Stream s = ras.AsStreamForRead()) {
var sr = new StreamReader(s);
var fileContent = sr.ReadToEnd();
My first assumption that I encounter some line break issues. However, users having the issue report that the file size in the app (I display fileProps.Size in case of an error) is zero, while the mail app shows several KBs. I told users to install a text
reader app and try to open it with this app, and from what I hear the multi-KB attachments are also empty in the text reader app. Users also reported, that the effect does not occur with all files, so the problem seems to occur only in certain combinations
of devices and files.
From what I see, my code is OK - and it seems to work in most cases. What can I do about this problem? And as a first step, how can I further debug it? Getting the file properties seems the most I can do with the storage API ...
Thanks in advance,
Christoph

Hmmm.
Well there are two possibilities I'm thinking here.
1)
The file is somehow messed up on their phone but in a very strange way since it can be forwarded OK.
This seems rather unlikely.
3)
The files are fine on the users' phones and user error or whatever means they could open them in a text reader but aren't.
I would refactor async calls into callbacks.
I would also consider saving some info to isolated storage and implement some sort of error reporting service.
Serialise file data like size and perhaps the first so many bytes to xml.
Give them a button or something allows them to send last transmission data to your service.
Supporting end consumer apps is a bit of a challenge without data.
Something we've been discussing recently since I'm ( unusually ) working on something consumers will use.
Hope that helps.

  • Corruption in text files retrieved through Adobe Drive on Mac

    I am running an OpenCMIS based CMIS server on Mac. When viewing text files retrieved from the CMIS repository through Adobe Drive, there is nontextual content appearing at the end of the file. XCode, for example, ends up displaying this content as a variable number of '¿' characters. This is not just a visual problem as file comparisons between a file retrieved through Adobe Drive and the same file retrieved through other means detect the files as being different.
    This is only happening with text files. Binary comparison of nontext files retrieved through Adobe Drive and files retrieved through other means detect the files identical.
    This only occurs when the CMIS server is running on a Mac and Adobe Drive is running on a Mac. Adove Drive running on a Windows machine and connecting to this same CMIS server does not have this problem and vice versa.
    This problem does not occur if I retrieve files through other CMIS clients.
    Any help/resolution you could offer on this issue would be appreciated.

    Having same issue. Using Indesign CC 2014.2 update, OS X 10.10.3 and any server using a smb, afp, or cifs connection.

  • [SOLVED] /sbin/ldconfig: File /usr/lib/libhd.so is empty, not checked.

    I am getting very weird behaviour. For some reason, my kernel got wiped out. Luckily, I got it back.
    But some things are just not right. Firefox doesn't work at all, no idea why. There is absolutely no terminal output.
    When trying to re-install it, I get this messages in pacman
    /sbin/ldconfig: File /usr/lib/libhd.so is empty, not checked.
    /sbin/ldconfig: File /usr/lib/libhd.so.16.0 is empty, not checked.
    /sbin/ldconfig: File /usr/lib/libhd.so.16 is empty, not checked.
    But those files are not owned by any package? What's that all about?

    I tried with ldconfig but nothing changed. I still get the same error. Any other suggestion?
    After you find out what package owns that file, try to reinstall it. Another problem could be a filesystem corruption (software or hardware).
    I had already tried with pacman -Qo, but no package owns those files.
    It probably is a filesystem corruption. I had my /boot partition unmounted when pacman updated kernel26 and kernel-headers, and it crashed while creating the new image with mkinitcpio, so I had to shutdown horribly. I lost also many of my KDE configs, but that's no biggie.
    Still... what can I do about those files?

  • Why is Acrobat cloud sooooooooo slooooooooooooow - it's quicker to file, retrieve and photocopy paper than use this rubbish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    And why is it so difficult to find out how it should work - trying it out is so slow

    One day somebody will invent PAPER!
    I used to be an Acrobat fan, but it's getting slower to run any of the applications and the cloud storage is about as responsive as clouds in the Gobi Desert

  • Can i retrieve a deleted file when my Trash is already empty????

    hey guys,
    i need your help!!! Can i still retrieve an important file, that i accidentally deleted, when my Trash is already empty??? please please help!!! is there any way that i could retrieve the file???

    Hi leecastasus;
    First thing is to stop using the Mac. The more you use the Mac the greater your chances of overwriting the deleted file.
    Get a demo copy of Data Rescue II. The demo will tell you if it can recover the file for you. If it can then you must pay for it to do that actual recovery to another disk.

  • I restored my bookmarks from a resent .json file, but one folder is now empty and one is missing.

    Hi,
    Because of reasons my computer needed to be refreshed. My old firefox profile folder was saved though, and with that the bookmarkbackups. As the title says I restored my bookmarks from a resent .json file, but one folder (containing probably about a hundred bookmarks) is now empty and one other is missing completely.
    In some places I have a 5 levels deep folder structure for my bookmarks, but since the folders missing are from different levels I don't think this is the problem.
    The now empty folder contained six or seven other folders, that in turn contained a lot of bookmarks with titles including non-alphanumerical characters. †?|&*()<-/., to be precise. However, if I restore a very old .json (from september 2013) the folders are present and contain the mentioned bookmarks - albeit much fewer, since the file is old. A few other bookmarks still present also contain the mentioned characters, so this is probably not the problem either.
    The folder that is completely missing just contained a lot of bookmarks that were to be sorted.
    When opening the more recent .json files (I have a whole month of automatic backups to choose from) in the firefox scratchpad it would seem that the bookmarks are missing alltogether, so I suppose that there is not much to do about it (please correct me if I'm wrong), but I definitely want to report the bug.
    Is there anything at all to do about it?
    Thanks,
    Hanna

    If the bookmarks aren't present in the JSON backup then it is likely that you got a corrupted places.sqlite file at some time that caused the backup not working properly.
    Did you try all the backups?
    Note that the xxxx part of the bookmarks-####-##-##_xxxx.json file name shows the number of bookmarks in the file.

  • How do I write an excel file and check what the next empty column would be to put the data in?

    I have somehow managed to write the portion of labview that prompts the user for a name. It checks a file to see if they are a new user or not and then assigns a number if they are. The program then acquires data that is to be put into a spreadsheet. Each subject will have ten trials which will have three columns. How do I get the information into the columns and then check each time to see which column it should go into (i.e. the next empty column for that subject). I have attached what I have thus far. I wrote this a long time ago and haven't touched it for some time so everything is a blur.

    To perform those operations in excel you will use ActiveX. I will attach some examples of using Excel in LabVIEW and you can use these to do exactly what you want.
    These three examples show how to manipulate properties, write to excel and read from excel. Let me know if there is more I can do.

  • One file in Trash refuses to be emptied.

    I have one file in my trash that refuses to be emptied.
    I receive a message 'Emptying the Trash cannot be completed because "BootX" is locked.
    I have tried holding down the function key as suggested but to no avail.
    Can anyone help?

    brianmered wrote:

    both commands produce that response or just the second one?.
    Sorry to labour this V.K. but since I emptied the trash following your previous advice my trash bin doesn't act 'normally'.
    that command simply unlocked the trash folder on your TM drive, no more. what you describe sounds like a different issue. do you mean that this happens to trash even if you try trashing something on your main drive?
    You should
    1. reboot and see if that makes a difference with trash.
    2. if it does not run the following terminal command and post the results
    ls - aldeO ~/.Trash
    3. also run
    sudo chflags -R nouchg ~
    Instead of being able to drag files into it and batch delete the trash it now gives a message as I drag the file into the trash icon on my dashboard stating that the files will be immediately deleted , am I sure I want to continue. The files are deleted but the process of deleting files now requires several more key strokes. Is there a fix for this?
    BTW I really appreciate you taking the time to walk me through this......regards...Brian

  • Playing a video file retrieved from database using JMF

    Hello!
    I am developing a multimedia application that has to store videos, music, pictures in a database. I did a little searching and found that JMF is a very good solution in playing video/music using Java. I found some examples to play the video/music stored on the hard drive (as separate files), but i have to be able to take the video/music from the database, and feed it to the JMF player. Has anyone some suggestions about how this could be done?
    Thanks in advance!
    Edited by: radu.miron on May 8, 2008 9:03 AM

    Well, i think i didn't make myself clear enough :). i know how to retreive the data from the database. The thing is this: let's suppose i have a 700 MB movie stored in the database. One option to play that movie would be to retrieve it from the DB, create a file somewhere on the disk, and put the data retrieved from the database in that file. But this involves that the disk will be overflooded when let's say 100 people watch 100 different movies. Another option (as i see it) would be to gradually take parts of the movie from the database (first 50 MB, then another 50 MB, then another and so on), and feed it to the JMF player. The user will watch the movie, but will not have the whole movie available, just a part of it. As he watches it, the application takes the next chunck of movie data and feeds it to the JMF player. That was the question i intended to ask, if anyone has any idea regarding the second option, and not the part with retrieving from the database, but the part with giving the JMF player video data to play.
    The example i found on the web with JMF player is the following:
    import javax.swing.*;*
    *import javax.media.*;
    import java.awt.*;*
    *import java.awt.event.*;

                        int status =
                             chooser.showOpenDialog(PlayVideo.this);
                        if (status ==
                             JFileChooser.APPROVE_OPTION) {
                             File file = chooser.getSelectedFile();
                             try {
                                  load(file);
                             } catch (Exception e) {
                                  System.err.println("Try again: " + e);

  • File/Save As Text creates an empty file

    I'm attempting to produce a text file from a pdf file.  The file seems to have many pages of text, but Save as Text produces an empty file

    Can you select any text using the select tool?
    It could be that they are scanned pages that don't contain any actual text but simply images of text.

  • Can't import ISO Files in VM Manager because of empty Server Pool Drop Down

    Hello,
    I have the problem I can't import ISO files to my ressources because in the import mask the Server Pool Name Drop Down is empty. In the Virtual Machine Templates mask the Server Pool Name is available and I have already one VM running with a oracle template.
    The Server is 2.2.1 and the vm manager is 2.2.0. The server is a Pentium 4 3.2 GHz with 4 MB of RAM. The High Availabiliy Mode is enabled for this server pool.
    Has anyone an idea what the problem could be?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thx in forward
    Ben

    I am not expert in this area myself, but I believe the issue may be with shared storage changes that are needed for high availability.
    The following reference may help: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E15458_01/doc.22/e15444/ha.htm

  • Oracle 8.0.6 replication - Mlog file in the master does not empty

    Data in the log file in the master database does not deleted after the refresh job successfully completed for this table. I also tried the Complete refresh table. this but the log file still is not empty. All records in master table replicated to this remote site fine. What must I do to empty this log file, since it keeps on growing. Please help.

    One Mlog could be used by many snapshots (mviews)
    This select:
    SELECT sl.log_owner,
    sl.master,
    sl.log_table,
    rs.owner,
    rs.name,
    rs.snapshot_site
    FROM sys.dba_snapshot_logs sl
    JOIN sys.dba_registered_snapshots rs ON rs.snapshot_id = sl.snapshot_id
    select all mlog and associated snapshots (mviews).
    Check for your one, how many snapshots are there.
    Do refresh for all snapshots and mlog must be empty if there are no modificatiion of master table.
