File Sharing and Permissions ANNOYING!!!

I'm trying to share files between my macpro and macbook pro, both running 10.5.2. The files appear to share fine between the 2. I throw a file into the public folder and it pops up on my other mac, even opens fine. But when I go to save it, it says I don't have sufficient privilages. It seems that by default any file that is shared is the property of the sending mac and automatically denies me write privilages on any files I send between my macs. The only way to fix this is copy the files once they reach their destination mac, which is annoying when you're dealing with large files and whole directories full of large files.
What I want to be able to do is copy a file or folder from, lets say, my macbook pro to my macpro and automatically have full privilages on it, without the need to re-copy it. I even set up a folder outside of the public folder and set that up as a shared folder. That didn't work. When I connect between my macs I do it via direct ethernet and I don't use the guest account.
I'm a digital graphics artist, so this is **** trying to keep my assets available and up to date on both my machines.
Oh, and I can't use target disk mode unfortunately (has to do with license servers, floating licenses and lengthy 3d renders).
thanks for any help on this,
kvb

The easiest way is to authenticate as a valid user on each box.
For your MacBook Pro
Click on "Connect as..." on the MacPro icon and enter the username and Password of a valid user on the MacPro.
For your MacPro
Click on "Connect as..." on the MacBookPro icon and enter the username and Password of a valid user on the MacBookPro.
That should work, with full access.

  • AD Credentials, File Sharing and Permissions

I've created a sharepoint on an Xserve G5 running Mac OS X Server 10.4.5. This sharepoint is to be shared to both Mac and Windows clients using Samba. A local group was created that is comprised mostly of Active Directory users. This local group was given Read&Write access for the share. The users in this group can all mount the share. However, whenever the group users try to delete existing files, or add files to the share they receive an error stating:
"The operation cannot be completed becaue you do not have sufficient priveleges for some of the items."
I've verified that the correct users are in the group, that the group has Read&Write access, and that the users can mount the share. I just can't figure out where the permissions would be wrong to give that error. Everything looks right, to me.
    Help?

I've seen this error message before; these links may be of interest, even though they don't solve your problem:

Your situation may be similar; however, I would also check to be sure that the "ignore permissions/ignore ownership" box is un-checked in the Info window of the volume that houses the share point. Occasionally, I've seen situations in which that has caused the failed copy error.

  • Two 'everyone' accounts in sharing and permissions, privilege is set to custom, saving files not possible! Help Please!

    Hi!
I have an issue where many files have multiple users named 'everyone' in the get info dialogue box.
The first listed 'everyone' has custom access instead of read and write access.
This means that I can not save files without individually selecting them and changing this permission flag.
I have tried selecting folders and applying to enclosed items, I have turned off file sharing for the drive (it is a second hard drive installed via an optibay equivilent) and am getting frustrated having to unlock each indiviual file.
As you can see, there is a second everyone account.
This account does not appear on folders, so I can't apply changes to a group of files. If I select a group of files with the issue all sharing and permissions options are greyed out and can't be changed.
Is anyone else suffering from this, it is a new issue since upgrading to lion.
    Thanks!

    Hey stool,
Yeh so I took my Mac to the guy from the authorized repair shop thingo, and the guy was like helpfulness = 0
He had no idea what it was and offered to take it in for 24hours. I tole him no since I need my laptop for school work! So he said well we we could do a fresh install which in my case did NOT work!
So I'm still stuck with the same problem, 4 hours wasted for the fresh install and a repairman who has no idea what to do!
    Oh well!
I'm going to go back to googling!

  • Files locks and permissions

    Hi,
I've just started a new job and taken over a Mac Pro. I've been given a new login as an admin but i've got problems saving files etc. everytime i come to a folder i haven't touched i only have read permissions so i can't re-save files, or save new ones in these folders. So at the moment i'm having to keep going to 'get info' clicking the lock at the bottom, entering the password. and allowing admin to Read and Write so that i can save files.
To be more specific it says this in the 'sharing and permissions':
Edit 1 (not me) - Read and Write
admin (is me including) - read only
    everyone - Ready only
I'm getting slightly annoyed with this, is there someway to give me full read and write access straight away or am i going to be click the blooming lock icon forever?
    Thanks
    Mark

First move any important data/files from the old user's home folder to /Users/Shared. Then make a new user account for yourself in System Preferences -> Accounts. You will have to get your system administrator to do this for you if you don't know the admin password. Log in and use the new, fresh account. You will have read-only access to the files in /Users/Shared. Do a Command-D on the files to make new copies of them, with correct permissions so you can edit them.
Reinstalling everything is still important; make sure you do it at the earliest opportunity.

I'm going to assume that since you deleted your hard drive and all its files, you had a backup, yes? If the backup has an OS (bootable clone), then you can boot into it by holding down the option key when you start up you iMac and choose the backup drive. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to copy the files back to your iMac.

  • Macbook will not start after sharing and permissions error

I was cleaning around my files and went into the info of my Mac.
I clicked get info on the desktop icon and accidently messed up the sharing and permissions settings.
My computer would not let me into my Mac icon on my desktop, saying I didn't have certain permissions.
I tried restarting and now my Macbook will not startup. It turns on and loads, but never goes past that.
I removed the battery and placed it back in but it is not working still.

  • Set up user accounts from another Mac in Sharing and Permissions?

    Hello!
I'm using GoodSync (app) to synchonize several folders between my MacBook Pro Retina and my iMac daily, via a scheduled task. GoodSync is installed on the MBP and the folders that I'm syncing between the two are connected via network shared. (See screen shot --- this is from the MBP)
This method works, however in order to get everything to share properly, I had to set read and write permissions for all the groups (my username on the iMac, and the "everyone group") under Sharing and Permissions for every folder and it's contents. I'm concerned that "everyone" has the possbility to get into/ruin my files and folders. (see screen shot -- this is from the iMac)
Is there anyway I could assign my MBP's user account to come up under Sharing and Permissions in the Get Info window (on the iMac) for all the folders I'm syncing between the computer, that way I could give just the MBP or just the MBP's user account the permission to "Read and Write" (on the iMac)?
Could anyone please tell me how or give me a more secure way of doing this? Really liking GoodSync over my local network because my data doesn't get copied to a cloud.
    Thanks for looking/contributing advice!
    Julie.

You can create a sharing-only account in the users and groups system preferences, and use this as a means for establishing permissions and access to shared folders so syncing programs can access them. This account can be managed in the file sharing preferences just like any standard account, only that it does not have a local home folder and cannot be used to log into the system at the login window.

  • Strange Sharing and Permissions and Admin Users question.

I am having problems printing and need to change the permissions and ownership on a library file
    My directions were to:
[ The fiery cups filter needs ownership changed from admin to system (root) ]
My secondary question is I am making the assumption that when someone refers to my "system (root)" that this is the same as "my name (me)" Yes?
But my primary mystery question is
As I went to change the permissions on the above top topic I noticed I had four choices.
I am the only single user of this computer. My permissions are set to Administrator status.
I apparently had a guest account enabled but I don't remember turning this on.
On the get info window, at the bottom, under sharing and permissions, NAME and PRIVILEGE when I add - select a new user or group, I have:
    My account "my name (me)"
    "administrators"
    and *"firebird database"?*
"everyone" is already there as a standard default.
*I don't know what the **** "firebird database" is. It shows as a single user account.* My guest settings were enabled to connect to my shared folders, which I have turned off. Is this "firebird" part of Apple code or has something been compromised without me knowing?
    Anyone know? Thanks in advance.

Root or System ownership is not the same as you. You are a restricted user. Root is an unrestricted user.
If you have installed third-party printing software with incorrect permissions, then start by using Disk Utility to repair permissions. Do not begin changing file/folder permissions when you obviously do not know what you are doing as this could screw up your entire system.
Firebird is a third-party database program that you must have installed. Obviously there is a problem with it. Either uninstall it or contact the developer for assistance.

  • How to change external hard drive sharing and permissions

I have two new hard drive that are formatted NTFS. The sharing and permissions is et to ready only so I can only read the drives I can't edit any files on these two drives.
Both drives are connected via USB to my iMac running OS X 10.9.5
I have other drives on my network that under sharing and permission I have  'Custom Access' for file sharing. Both these drive are NTFS format.
How can I change the other two drive sharing and permission settings to 'Custom Access'
    Thanks

There is no permissions you can change. OS X can only read from an NTFS formatted drive. If you need to read from and write to an NTFS formatted drive you will need to use a utility such as Tuxera NTFS 2012.3.4. Alternatively, re-partition and reformat the drive for a Mac.
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • Best Practises for File Sharing and Print Server on Windows Server 2012

Is it better to have File Sharing and Print Server installed on the same Windows 2012 Server ?
Or, they should be installed on 2 different Windows Servers ?
    Hussien Sherief

It will work just fine to combine them.
But most people would recommend keeping functionality separate... if the budget allows.  That whole "single point of failure" concept.  If that server dies, you've lost both of those functions.

  • How do I set up file sharing and keep my Firewall on?

When I turned my Firewall on, I lost the ability to share files and screens on my LAN. When I looked at the advanced settings, I saw that File Sharing, Screen Sharing and Web Sharing were already set to Allow incoming connections but other, related, services, AppleFileServer, httpd, kdc, netbiosd, and screensharingd were set to block incoming connections. I reset the latter to allow incoming connections but was still unable to access my computer from another. Once I turned off the Firewall, I was able to access file sharing and screensharing from another computer on my LAN.
I have a firewall built into my external router so I have some protection but I still feel uncomfortable with the Firewall on my computer turned off.
When my firewall is on even with setting up to allow incoming connections, there are lots of console messages like:
1/8/12 3:00:00.882 PM Firewall: Deny netbiosd data in from 192.168.1.2:51619 to port 137 proto=17
They go away as soon as I turn off the firewall.
I did not find the Apple technical article "Set firewall access for services and applications" at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.7/en/mh18503.html useful at all.
Any ideas as to what is wrong?

I normally have a Firewall enabled. I recently had to do an erase and install of Lion, followed by a one-by-one re-install of all of my software. One of the first things I did was to set up all of my System Preferences the way I like them; Turning the Firewall on was one of them. Later I noticed it was off and turned it on again. I had already set up sharing and was surprised to see the problem when I turned it back on.
As to why do I think it needs to be on. It is another part of my security layer.

  • XP pro file sharing and guest password - how to enable guest password?

    Hi,
I want to share files between two Windows XP pro computers. I would also like that these shares can only be accessed with a password.
Here's a description of my setup:
I have two laptops: over 1 yo Fujitsu-Siemens (FS) running on Windows XP pro (finnish) and a brand new Thinkpad T61 (TP) running on Windows XP pro (english). Both of theses computers have guest account enabled and these accounts have also been password protected. FS's guest account is called "vieras" because of the language settings and TP's guest account is of course just "guest". Guest account passwords have been enabled using "net user <user name> *".
I've disabled simple file sharing on both computers, set shared folder permission to only contain these users: TP - "Guest (TP\Guest)" and FS - "Vieras (FS\Vieras)". Both computers have F-secure on them so I've made firewall rules which enable following services both ways to a specific IP: Ping / ICMP echo request and reply ; Windows file sharing and network printers ; Windows network browsing ; ICMP / Internet Control Message Protocol. I've also enabled these services on Windows firewall.
These computers can connect to each other either via Wi-Fi access point (b-mode) or directly using an ad-hoc Wi-Fi configuration (g-mode). Obviously the latter is used for more bandwidth hungry file transfers. Also, sometimes a cross-over Ethernet cable is used as well for even faster file transfers.
Everything on my setup works just fine except just one thing. I connect to a shared resource by running the computer's IP address. When I connect from TP to FS it prompts for username and password. FS accepts both english and finnish names for  the guest account provided that the password is correct. But here's the problem... When connecting from FS to TP _no password or username prompt appears_. If I browse TP's shared folder sessions (under My Computer -> manage) I can see that FS is logged on as "vieras" i.e. FS's guest account.
Since I enabled FS's network shares over a year a go I can't remember everything I did to make it work. Every relevant configuration on TP and FS seem to be identical (e.g. "Security settings -> local policies -> security options -> Accounts: limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only -> enabled") but still TP accepts connections without password prompt.
I've tried to get TP's password prompts enabled for a while now without any success. I did a lot of searching on the subject but I could only find instructions on how to disable guest account password prompts for network shares.
Has anyone had similar experiences or does anyone know what I should try out next? Thanks...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Success!
I solved my problem by changing guest account passwords. I tried to keep things simple by using the same guest password on both computers. This however allowed FS to log on to TP without guest password for some unknown reason. My logic would tell me that having the same guest password would allow both computers to log in without password but this wasn't obviously the case. I guess Windows has its own logic that I can't figure out or this issue had something to do with different language setups. Anyhow my shares work now like I want them to work.

  • Problem using file sharing and screen sharing in Leopard

I have Mac OS 10.5 Leopard installed on 4 computers in a Home Network and have a problem with sharing files and using screen sharing. Here is my setup.
MacBook Pro with my logon ID
MacBook Pro with my fiancee's logon ID
Mac Mini with both of our logon ID's
Mac Pro with both of our logon ID's
The problem I have is I am able to access the Mac Mini computer where we have an external Hard Drive connected for data. She is also able to access it. The only problem is we have it set up to only share this external USB drive. Yet for both of us it shares the external drive along with the internal Macintosh HD. Fortunately this is not a very big deal but since I'm not sharing all those drives why is it doing this?
Also, I am able to connect from the Mac Mini for example to my MBP and vice versa for screen sharing along with file sharing. Yet if she tries to connect to the Mac Pro from her MBP and vice versa it won't. It simply times out and will never connect for screen sharing or file sharing but yet the Finder shows the Mac Pro. We have a 2nd hard drive in the Mac Pro which is the one set up for file sharing. I am also unable to connect to the Mac Pro's HD. Everything appears to be set up correctly. For my MBP on the Finder it shows the Mac Pro but once again I am unable to connect to it for screen sharing or file sharing.
Also, not sure if it's related but even for her MBP she is unable to connect to it from any other computer in our network although it's set up for file sharing and screen sharing so I'm not sure if it's related to her logon ID. Then again as mentioned above neither of us can connect to the Mac Pro.
I tried to make the above sound as simple as possible. I am relatively new to networking and of course Leopard but even on the Mac Pro all settings sound the same as on the Mac Mini where we can both connect to. The only big difference is on the Mini we are connect to a USB external drive, on the Mac Pro an internal drive. Is there something I could have overlooked or are there known issues with Leopard's sharing features?
We both have .mac but since we are using this on an internal network (some wi-fi, some wired, all through an Airport Base Station Extreme) I would think this has nothing to do with Back to my Mac.
I appreciate any help with the above.

    Hi!
I have a WD my book external hard drive plugged into my imac and I want to share it over my network with my apple tv. I went into system preferences > sharing, checked "file sharing" and added my external hard drive to the shared folder. So now it is listed in "shared folders" but under "users" everything is grayed out (it says "read and write" for "everyone" - but "read and write" is grayed out, and it doesn't let me add or subtract users). Now I can access all of the folders I shared from my imac except for the externalhard drive. What's going on?

Hi RRFS!,thanks for help.I forgot to tell that hard drive has 2 partitions 1:format :Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and that works properly,2:format:MS-DOS (FAT32) and when i "get info" for both :first has shering & permitions:You can read and write - with name and privilege, second has shaing & prermissions:You can read and write- without name and privilege
