File Synchronization

I am looking for a way to synchronize files from an OS X server to Windows clients. The feature ideally will operate similar to Offline Files in Windows.
What options do I have for this with an OS X Snow Leopard Server?
Thanks,
Arman

You might take a look at Chronosync from Econ Technology. I see the price has gone up to $40 dollars, but once you buy a license you can update forever. I recently wrote them to get a new license and they sent me one with no problem (do save the email they send you, my email address has changed several times over the years, but with a copy of my previous emails from them everything was fine).

I just now used it to sync a folder in my home directory to the FAT32 drive I share with my Vista installation. You can customize things any way want: synchronize deletions or not, and many other options as well. When you run a particular sync of a folder you save it, then the next time you want to do the same thing just double click the saved sync file. It is incredibly fast when you do it that way.

  • File Synchronization problem with TimeStamp

    Win2k, LabVIEW 7.0
I'm trying to do file synchronization between the data files I produced on the local disk, and a remote server.
I am doing a LIST FILES on the local folder, and a LIST FILES on the remote folder.
For each file, I do a GET FILE INFO, and look at the LAST MOD data (a TIMESTAMP value).
For each file in the SOURCE folder, I match it up with the corresponding entry in the DESTINATION folder.
I then compare the times, and if the SOURCE timestamp is greater than the DEST timestamp, then I delete the DEST file, and COPY the source file to the DEST.
There are a few files that fail this process, though, and I am puzzled as to why.
If I look (via Windows explorer) at the properties of one of these files, it says the LAST MOD date is 6:09:20. That is the case for BOTH the local copy and the remote copy.
However, the SYNCH logic above insists on copying this file every time it runs. When I add logging stuff to the synch process, it tells me that the local file has a date of 6:09:21, and the remote file has a date of 6:09:20, so it wants to copy it.
But after the copy, things are exactly the same - Windows shows the times identical, but LabVIEW shows them ONE second apart, and copies them AGAIN the next time it runs. This is true for about 6 files out of a folder of 50-60. I suppose I could allow for that one second, if I knew why it was there.
What's biting me here? If the file really had a MOD DATE resolution of 1 mSec say, then I could understand that maybe the PROPERTIES window truncates the value, and the TIMESTAMP does not. But even then, it ought to copy ONCE and set them the same...
The "Server" I am testing on is running OSX, 10.4.6, if that matters.
    What am I missing?

That's not the case. If you read the real thread (I'm not sure how this got posted here, though I know I'm responsible), you'll see that I found cases where it rounded(?) the time from an even number to an odd number of seconds.

  • Any SYNC APPs that allow for specific file synchronization for the MacBook Pro??? Please advise..

Any recommendations for a sync app that allows for specific file synchronization rather than just a complete back-up program?  I want to be able to synchronize certain files only on multiple external hard-drives?
    FYI:[[Using a 15" MacBook Pro on Mac OSX Version 10.6.7, Processor 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 4GB RAM 1067MHz DDR3]]

I'm pretty sure you should keep Boot Camp 2.1, Scorpio.
I'm not sure about the driver only or complete reinstall question though.
Probably the best place for an answer to this would be over in the BootCamp "Installation and Storage" forum at http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=237 where the "specialists" in this sort of matter hang out.
Post a link to this thread over there as well, so that people will know what has already been suggested.

  • Source File Synchronization

Hi, i dont know if the subject line makes any sense so allow me to elaborate.
I have these two bytecodes, x.src and y.src. I use jcreator pro to write, compile and run these files.
Is there any way i can set y.src to run as soon as x.src starts running? That is, not just run the programs simultaneously but synchronize their startup.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
Ok allow me to break it down.
I have a program called service and another program called spy.
Service reads ascii characters from confidential.txt, converts each character to binary and depending on the bit places locks on file.txt, 1 meaning a lock and 0 unlock. This is problem 1 - it requires a solution.
Spy periodically checks lock status on file.txt and depending on the lock status determines the bit until a byte has been determined. This byte is than used to get back the ascii character. This is problem 2 - it requires a solution.
My problem is..how can i synchronize spy with service to accurately determine all the bits to get the correct byte? Im getting all garbage and im pretty sure most of the characters im seeing isnt ascii. This is problem 3 - it requires a solution.
None of the above really seem to have to do with starting and stopping the apps either although the last might make it implicit. But that would be problem 4.
I suggest you skip 4 until you are sure of 1 to 3.
3 requires its own solution. Such a using a dedicated file or some other way to signal.

  • Can macbook air and 24" Imac/Leopard 10.5.2 achieve file synchronization

To renew my three year old Apple machines, I have chosen to use one macbook air and one 24" Imac. The questions are:
    1. can these two machines be set up to harmonically synchronize and keep all document files (mostly text) between them up-to-date when next to each other again?
    2. can all email folders (received and sent) be synchronized as above
My work requires that the macbook air should be traveling with me and I would need to fully synch both machines upon returning to base.
I am requesting any possible/feasible well tried/applied solution with Apple and Mac products.
All advice will be appreciated. Thank you.

    Welcome to the Apple forums:
You might try DiskWarrior as another tool.
I would personally shy away from using FileVault. It turns your user folder into a huge single file and TM only backs it up after you log out. And each backup is a full backup (not incremental) because any change to any item in your user folder means that the entire FileVaulted folder has changed. So TM quickly fills up your backup HD.
If you have the need for security, I suggest using a FlashDrive for the data. There is no reason to encrypt all the apps, AFAIK, but only the data.
Some have had good luck using Ubuntu. Create a bootable system DVD or CD and copy your HD contents to a backup drive and work from there. But with FV, that may not be very helpful.

  • Filr 1.1 File Synchronization Behavior

I am thinking about upgrading from Filr 1.0.1 to Filr 1.1.
The minor issue that I ran into with Filr 1.0.1 was that I had to enable scheduled synchronization for each and every user's "My Files" folder. I had to do this so that each user's ENTIRE "My Files" folder would fully synchronize with their Windows client. If I did not do this, then top level folders in their "My Files" folder would synchronize, but there would be no subfolders inside them; unless they would first access the subfolders in the web or mobile app. I asked on this forum a few months ago if there was a way to set scheduled synchronization for all of my user's "My Folders" at once. No one answered, so I took that to mean no. Anyways, before I upgrade to Novell Filr 1.1, I would like to ask the following question:
1.) Does Filr 1.1 provide "Just-in-Time" functionality to the Windows client that is similar to how the web client and mobile client work? If it does, I don't believe that I would have to set scheduled synchronizations as described above. A practical example of how this would be useful to us is, if a user created a new file on our file server near the end of the work day, by just saving it to their h: drive instead of going through the Filr client which is the way they are accustomed to doing that, and then 30 minutes later at home wanted to continue to work on it, they could do that instead of having to wait for the next scheduled synchronization to occur before they could see it.
    Thank you.

Yes, this has been resolved in Filr 1.1. In the properties of a Net
Folder Server there's a new setting, "Allow the desktop app to trigger
    initial home folder sync."

  • Data Services (BODI) password file synchronization by external application

    Hello,
Question: Is there any batch/shell process that update the BODS password file?
Issue: An external system (P-Synch) change the developper repository passwords every 60 days. The passwords have to be changed manually on the BODS server or account get locked.
Objective: Automation of BODI password syncrhonization (reset) on the server.
My dream: application_cmd -Repsoitory -Account -Password
    Thank you,

There's not a good option for that.
In the past, there was ABC Amber IPD converter which could extract or convert data from backup files to CSV or text files, but ABC is no longer available and I don't know of another IPD file extractor.
I don't know of another option. Let's see if someone else might.

  • File synchronization problem

I have a file "C:/test.txt" that app1 is reading (which takes a long time lets say)
At the same time app2 has an updated version of "C:/test.txt" so it creates "C:/test.txt.tmp" and writes it to that file, then it renames "C:/test.txt.tmp" to "C:/test.txt"
    BUT this fails.
This should work and I think it does on *nix machines (since app1 would still be pointing to the same inode), but it fails on Windows.
Is there some sort of work around for this on Windows? That is a real problem for anything with numerous applications accessign one file (and it shouldn't be if the OS took care of it correctly)

What?? That is the convention used by almost all systems. And it is the standard that most OS adhere to. The rename on most OS is an atomic action so it is the preferred way to update a file that is being accessed without worry of read errors (on any app that is reading that file) if the inode the file pointed to is preserved. This /should/ work on all OS (and does on most) but on Windows the file is locked (and this is due to the way the file system handles things I imagine). So making [2..n] applications (completely independet of one another) all access a file synchronously difficult. Any ideas on a "workaround" for the Windows OS?

  • Automatic file synchronization suggestions

    Hello all
I have received the following request from one of our local administrators.
My wish is to do this the most "sophisticated" way possible, but without using any third-party software.
Can I kindly ask you for any suggestions what might be the best approach to implement this, please?
Both servers are on the same domain.
    Here is the request:
We need an automatically copy of data between two servers.
This should be on a daily base at 17.30 local time.
    Source:
    \\%server1%\Shared\folder1\folder2\folder3\
    Destination:
    \\%server2%\Shared\folder1\folder2
Task:                     Copy, changed and new, files and folders, but don’t delete the files/folders in the Destination if they are deleted in the Source.
When:                  Workdays at 17.30 local time (GMT +1)
    EDIT:
Is robocopy an option in this case?
    The IT guys from LukOIL

Yes, robocopy is an option. It's what I use for daily backup scripts of some servers. Never had a problem with it.
I have prepared a command that I think might do for what we need.
    robocopy \\%server1%\Shared\folder1\folder2\folder3 \\%server2%\Shared\folder1\folder2 /E /MAXAGE:14 /MON:15 /XO /XL /XX /IT /L /LOG+:E:\Shared\IM\_robocopy_logs\robocopy_log_file.log
Can you please review it for me?

  • Destructive _Reads_ or file synchronization

Given a Java program that makes a request via a file, and a non-Java program that writes results to a new file, is there a way that the Java program can do destructive reads (when it reads a record fro the results file, the record is destroyed)? Or, is ther some idea how the Java program can know thta the non-Java program is done writing to the file? TH Java code needs to avoid both a) not reading all the recores that will be written to the file and b) rereading a record twice. ^Thanks.
    Ken

I came across the answer to this a while back. The answer lies in the FileLock class included java.nio API:

  • Offline Files Synchronization

When running a "Sync All" on offline files, it runs for an hour or so and then just stops and says Sync Failed with 1 error.  The error message says "The Handle is Invalid."  That is the extent of the message.  I currently have offline files
to use 200GB on my 1TB hard drive and am only using 154GB of that space.  The files are also set up to be encrypted.
The offline files have run fine without any issues for several weeks, and then I added 132MB of files this past weekend.  Ever since then I have not been able to get a full sync to run.  Not sure if this is a coincidence or something else is happening.
Any suggestions would be appreciated as I have not found anything of value online.

    Hi,
I am also facing the same issue, when i say "Sync All" it runs
for some time and then just stops and says Sync Failed with  error. The error message is "The Handle is Invalid." If i see the files which gives cross mark and it will not allow to open the files, any suggestions or solution...?

I use a program to file synchronization, which is called File Sync. File sync program (www.fileutilityblog.com/archives/240) is one of the most efficient programs of all that I know. That is why I use this program and haven't any problems. May be it will help you, too

  • Archiving old TM files--new TM disk

I'm moving my TM setup to an NAS drive. I originally wanted to use the NAS for iTunes, but that was too problematic and I discovered you can't back up an NAS drive to TM. So, I'm moving my iTunes folder to my old TM drive (USB external) and using the NAS for TM backup. I'd like to archive the backup files from the old USB drive, at least for a while, but I get error messages when I try to copy them. An example is "The item 'backups.backup.db' can't be moved because 'imacbackup' can't be modified". ('imacbackup' is a folder I created on the NAS.) I get other error messages when I try to copy the folder to the iMac itself. Is there something funky about the TM files that make them unmoveable? Thanks!

I doubt Disk Utility will even work on a NAS. But CCC should. If it doesn't provide access to a NAS then you'll need to try something that will such as:
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    Silver Keeper
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    Synchronize Pro! X
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Or I don't see why you couldn't use the TM application to restore data to the NAS.

  • Difference between File Sharing, Dropbox, and Public Folder?

I have this MBP out front & my Mac Mini in back. I'm comparatively new to networking, altho I've used File Sharing (FS) & Dropbox (Db). It seems now, there are a myriad of ways to sync my two computers. (ICloud is also used, just for Mail & iCal, since those are the only two I have that Apple allows on iCloud. I have the computers networked w/ an Airport Extreme. That all works flawlessly.)
I'm aware of Apple's Drop Box, but it doesn't work since the two computers are over 30' apart.
The three subject features all do the same thing, I believe, so along with this question, I'm asking which of the 3 is preferable. Dropbox confuses me because it refers to the Public Folder, when it seems only necessary to drag a file to the Db folder, rather than the Public Folder. Anyone know where the Public Folder fits into the Db scheme of things? Or even into the FS scheme of things? Or even into the total file sharing/snycing landscape? My hunch is to ignore the Public Folder.
As to File Sharing, if I opt for this, then I don't need Db or the Public Folder. Right? The problem w/ FS is that both machines need to be up & running (and not in a Sleep mode). Also, FS is irrelevant when it comes to the Web. On top of all this, most apps come w/ the capability to upload files, photos, etc., for the Web. I'm in a situation where I need to keep track of what I'm sharing, whether it be through FS, Dropbox, or the Public Folder.
I would really like to simplify my workflow by settling on just one means of syncing my two computers. I'm aware that Db is good for sharing files not only between my 2 Macs, but putting stuff on the Web.
How do some of you share data between computers? What do you go with? All 3, 2, or just one? How do you keep things straight?

I'm aware of Apple's Drop Box...
    You mean AirDrop.
The three subject features all do the same thing, I believe...
    No, they're entirely different.
File Sharing is a file service that works over a local network.
Dropbox, which I've never used, is a cloud-based storage and file-synchronization service.
The Public Folder is the subfolder of your home folder that's accessible to other users of the same computer, and also to other users on the network if File Sharing is active. (The term "Public Folder" may have another meaning in the context of Dropbox.)
How do some of you share data between computers?
There are many ways to do that, in addition to the ones you mentioned. It's not really clear what your requirements are.
