Files disappear when played - ARGH!

I had several dvds converted to play on my ipod. The external hard drive is where I stored them, since my laptop doesn't have the space. itunes advanced properties was set-up for the external drive's use. I opened the H drive movies with itunes and noticed after they had played in itunes, they disappeared from the original folder that I put them in! The "movies" are now somewhere within the itunes library (likely renamed so I'll never find them manually) now but I have no idea why they were moved from the original folder or where the insane program put the files. I CANNOT find the movies to watch it through another program that is not so insanely complicated to use- the movies are now gone!
I had to buy a 250Gb external hard drive to manage the music, since there's not enough room on the computer's hard drive. For some reason, itunes decided to start using my C drive one day, instead of the H drive, originally designated as MY choice (maybe I opened itunes one day without the external hd on?). I noticed the exclamation points on the music and panic!! I started trying to backup music, for fear of losing it. I re-designated the H drive again and did some hacking to backup the songs saved off the ipod and into another backup- then imported the backup folder and lost all play lists as a result. I'm NOW afraid to syc.
How can you backup your files if you don't have control over which drive you designated as the sync or even where the files are placed? Why does itunes remove files from folders when you play them? I've never been so confused by any software in my life as I have with itunes. I'm not able to enjoy the music comfortably and am always in fear of losing what I have. I've turned into a music manager instead of a music lover. The program has a mind of it's own...totally alien to what I want it to do. ARGH! No way I'm ever going to update the software again either. I cannot manage the learning curve on what I've got now, after over a year.

This seems to bee the same problem.

Apple keeps books for a short time (used to be 40 days. I've not seen a recent time frame)
    What version did you have?
Books do nor exist except in the iPhoto database so you can not "find" a book vista TM. You restore a previous library (be sure NOT to overwrite your current library) and switch to it

  • An issue whereby Photoshop .PSD files disappear when saved to a network file share

It has been reported and reproduced by Support, an issue whereby Photoshop .PSD files disappear when they’re saved to a network file share.
Upon initial investigations Support have observed the following behaviour when saving a Photoshop file.
The document is initially saved as a new file on the file share.
The original  .PSD file is deleted on the file share.
The newly created file is renamed to the same name as the original file.
An issue often arises when steps 1 and 2 complete however step 3 fails. When a file is reported by users as having disappeared, the new file created in step 1 can be renamed from  .00_ to the original *.PSD file name on the server as the *.00_ files are normally hidden by the desktop operating system. This allows people to see and open the file from both PC’s and MAC’s using AFP and SMB protocols.
A related issue often reported by users is that they receive an error message “Could not save as” when trying to save a .PSD file. Troubleshooting the issue confirms that the user is able to save the file if they perform a “Save As” operation in Photoshop.
From the reported problems and observations there is clearly an issue with how Photoshop performs a file save operation further exacerbated by the fact the process doesn’t fail safely.

Sounds like you're hitting one of the known MacOS filesystem bugs - worst when working with SMB volumes.
Apple knows about this, and we are pursuing workarounds to the OS bugs.
Yeah, if you value your files, don't save directly to servers, especially on MacOS.

  • Where are music files stored when playing a song stored in iTunes Match?

Where are music files stored when playing a song stored in iTunes Match? Instead of clicking the cloud icon and downloading the song, I simply double click the song and it starts playing. Later, I can quite iTunes, come back and not have to wait for the song to buffer. When I go to about on my computer I am told there is 11 gigabytes of music on my computer. Where are those files stored, do they clear themeselves over time, etc...

but then why does the FAQ state this:
Does iTunes Match stream or download songs?
On a computer, any songs stored in iCloud will stream over the air when played, though you can download them at any time by clicking the iCloud download button.
Do they mean a different computer than the one with the stored music files?  Would be nice if they specified what they mean

  • Layer disappears when playing from Flash Player

I have a dotted line animation in a layer. It shows up fine
when dropping to IE window but it disappears when playing from
inside Flash Player 7. Maybe it needs a newer version to play it
correctly but it's just a layer with a line in it. The SWF is
created with Flash CS3. Maybe Flash Player 7 comes from Studio 8
that is also on the PC.

I just found that it plays fine on Flash Player 9 which comes
with CS3. Some of the features probably are not compatible with
    Player 7.

  • Files disappear when creating a new folder

I'm new to mac....got a macbook this week. I'm in Iraq so I have very limited access to anything. No internet for my mac at the moment...so I can't update even if there are ones. I assume I have the currenct version of everything though. The question...
While switching over my files I decided to reorganize them. I'm working on my external HD and creating many new folders for all my files. On numerous occasions now (4) I have created a new file the standard way...right click>new>file...then named it. On these occasions I have done this it has renamed the previous file I had worked in (even though it was not selected) and then the contents of the file disappeared. This leaves me with the new file I created and another identical file of the same name...now with nothing in it. Some of my files I have backed up, but the last one deleted many videos that I didn't. Happens randomly at no particular time. If I select the file and view its contents often it will briefly change its name back to the original name, but still nothing in it. Then next selection of anything will switch it back. Have not been able to fine the files anywhere. Tired of losing my files. Any ideas??? Thanks.

Hi Craig and Welcome to Apple Discussions....
First of all, thank you for all you are doing. It's so appreciated! Just be safe and come home soon.
Now... I have a feeling your external hard drive is the culprit. Read here:
    Changing the names of items
You can easily change the name of a file, folder, or disk on your computer.
IMPORTANT: To avoid problems using Mac OS X or applications on your computer, don't move or change the names of folders that came with your system (such as the Library folder or your home). You should also not change the names of applications or items associated with specific applications. If you accidentally change the name of an installed item and you experience problems, you can change the name back.
Locate the item you want to rename on your desktop or in a Finder window.
Click the item to select it, then click the name. The name is highlighted and you will be able to edit it.
Type the new name and press Return.
Some document names have a file extension, such as ".txt" or ".jpg." If you change the name of a file and delete the extension, some applications may no longer recognize the file. To ensure the file can be recognized by the application that created it, change only the part of the name that comes before the extension, or open the file using the appropriate application, then save the file with a new name.
You cannot change the name of an item in the Finder window's sidebar. You must locate the item on your desktop or in a Finder window to highlight and change the name.
    And more here:
Getting information about files and folders
You can view and modify information about files, applications, and volumes in the Info window. This information can include:
Comments that Spotlight can search on
Who can view and modify the item.
The applications that can open it.
Metadata that describes a file's contents and how it was created. For example, a photo's Info window may contain the picture's dimensions, exposure time, and the make and model of the camera.
To see information for one or more items, select the items and choose File > Get Info. An Info window opens for each selected item.
To see a summary of information about several items, select the items then hold down the Control key as you choose File > Get Summary Info. A window summarizes information on all selected items, including their total size.
To see information about each item as you select it, select one of the items then hold down the Option key as you choose File > Show Inspector. An Inspector window displays information on the selected item. When you select another item, the Inspector's contents are replaced with information on that item.
I realize that's a lot to digest and your time might be limited. This is something that only takes a few minutes and might help immediately.
Go to MacintoshHD/Applications/Utilities and locae Disk Utility. Launch DU, select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left and then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Depending on the size of your drive, it should only take a few minutes. When it's finished, Quit Disk Utility from the Menu.
Here's how to find out exactly which Mac OS you are running. Click the Apple logo top left of your screen then click, About This Mac. A pane will open. Just under "Mac OS X" will be the version number. ie., 10.4.x
Reboot your MacBook and see if this helps.... I'm retired and have time... if you need one on one help e-mail me: [email protected]
It's the least I can do

  • Why do my pls files disappear when doubleclicked?

Someone asked me how to make an alias of a streaming radio station that they could just click, have it open iTunes and play.
While experimenting I found I could drag the radio station off the iTunes playlist to the desktop and it would create a URL. Doubleclicking the URL usually opened a browser, went to the site and downloaded a .pls file to the desktop. Doubleclicking that file opened iTunes and started playing the station.
Fine, I thought, I'll just rename the .pls file and use that as an alias to quickly get to the station. But alas, the .pls file disappears from the desktop once clicked, even if renamed and/or put into a folder.
I explained what I did to the person who originally asked and they were able to rename the files and not have them disappear on their Mac like mine did. Both of us are using 10.4.11.
Can anyone shed some light on this?

Try showing the import options and make sure the crop option you want to use is one that is not grayed out.

  • Why do windows source directory files disappear when their folder is added to iTunes?

I just got a new Windows 8 computer and installed iTunes. I then copied all of my music to my new computer from the old one into a similar \data\music directory organized by artist and album.
On the old computer (XP)when I add a folder from \data\music to itunes the source album music files remain inplace.
On the new computer (W8) when I add a folder from \data\music to itunes the source album music files disappear.
However, although the album directory is empty, the "parent MUSIC directory" hasn't changed in size. Is iTunes encrypting the source files? Itunes Help does have anything on this happening.
How do I access my source files if I want to do something with them?
This is scary stuff. Luckily I still have a copy on my old computer.
Any clarification on this would really be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Eric-B

Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
iTunes 11 also adds a Home Videos folder...
Your library is obviously in the newer layout, the designated media folder (red outline) is C:\Data\Music and the option Keep iTunes Media folder organized is enabled, so music goes in C:\Data\Music\Music\<Artist>\<Album> etc.
If you're interested you could probably "normaiize" your library with a few carefully chosen steps...

  • The sound on my G5 imac disappears when playing itunes

The sound on my imac just cuts out when playing itunes. If I press the Sound Increse or Decrease button on the keyboard it comes back - for a while !
The problem doesn't seem to be affected by anything else running.
The only thing that does seem to have an effect it is the volume - the lower the volume, the oftner it happens.
    Anybody help me?

One thing that helped was getting a toothbrush and scrubbing the dock connector on the phone.  I scrubbed the connector and used compressed air for about 1/2 hour till the connector looked much cleaner.  An Apple employee told me that the pins on the phone had a little corrosion and sand.  The problem hasn't gone away completely, but has been significantly reduced.  I'm going to hold out until my contract expires after which time I'll switch to an iPhone5 (or newer) or Android phone.

  • !s by songs disappear when played

The latest iTunes issue is that, after moving all my songs to iCloud (i have iTunes Match) and removing them my Macbook, an ! shows up by the song. When I go to play the song, I am asked if I want to locate the song. I hit Cancel, the song plays, and the ! disappears.
Do I have to do this for every song now? The !s are scattered randomly in my large iTunes library.

I don't have iTunes Match and don't use iCloud so I can't speak for that.  Normally if you see a ! by a song it means iTunes has a reference for it but the actual file was missing when iTunes last checked (usually at startup).  If you click on it and it suddenly plays it means the file has reappeared.  A common situation for this is where somebody has media on an external drive and their library files on the internal drive.  They start up iTunes without the external drive fully mounted and iTunes doesn't see the files, but then they start the drive and when you click on the track and iTunes has another look it is suddenly there and plays.  I know you didn't say this was your scenario but maybe there's something else going on similar to this.  Do you manually manage media, or keep media on separate volumes?
How did you remove the files from your Macbook?  Again, I don't have Match but I thought some other icon would appear for those songs.
iTunes Match: Understanding the iCloud Status icons - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4124
By the way, I hope you have your files archived on a drive at home too.  Match is a convenience feature but not a place to store your only copy of music.

  • Assigned genre disappears when playing track

I've been having a problem that I only noticed lately. On some songs (not all) when I double-click the track to play it, the assigned genre disappears. I'm able to "Get Info" and then re-assign the genre, but if I double-click the track to play it again, same thing happens... the genre disappears. Anyone else have this bug? Anyway to fix it? I have iTunes 9.0.2 on a MacBook Pro 17" with OS X 10.6.2.

I was having a similar problem... when I would double-click a track to play it, the genre would disappear. This would only happen with certain genres--ones that I'd added or had numbers in them (e.g. "70's, 80's - Pop").
After working on this a while I figured out I could solve the problem if I revealed the problem MP3 file in the Finder and then changed its ID3v2 tag (NOT the ID3v1 tag) to ID3v2.2.0 (it had been set at ID3v2.4.0). I also had to clear out the ID3 tag comments field (I think it appeared blank in iTunes, but in an ID3 tag editor it had hexadecimal digits in it).
The ID3 tag editor I used was "MP3 Rage" by Chaotic Software:
    http://www.chaoticsoftware.com/ProductPages/MP3Rage.html
What a relief! I thought my iTunes library was corrupted somehow. It seems that iTunes doesn't like certain versions of the ID3 tag spec.

  • Objects in InDesign files disappear when exported to PDF (CS5.5)

I have some text that was created to outlines, filled and has a drop shadow applied. When I export the document to pdf, part of the text (the fill) disappears, and all I get is the drop shadow. I tried changing to a non-spot color, I tried removing all attributes, and nothing seems to work! I also tried copying that artwork to the clipboard and pasting it into an Illustrator file (says it is too big to fit the pasteboard, which I verified sizes - and it should fit. I tried copying the paths and pasting them in Photoshop as a smart object... no luck either. What am I missing? Thanks in advance for any help!

FYI - in the "Adobe InDesign Component Infirmation" dialogue box I learned all kinds of info - are you looking for something in particular? I learned that the document was created in InDesign version 7.0.4.553 (which is what I think I was using before I updated my InDesign earlier today)
There aren't particular obvious signs, no.
Generally at this point the right way to track this down is to work with a copy of the document, and delete pages or objects in the document until you find the cause of the problem. Then look at it closely, perhaps look at the IDML file, or make it available so we can look at it.
It sounds like you have a workaround, but if you have time, it might worth trying to find the real problem.

  • Why do my Itunes files skip when playing?

Alright, I have noticed when I am playing music on Itunes that the files are skipping, usually within the first few seconds of the song beginning. What is up with that!?!? I purchase the files from Itunes. I am paying full price for the songs, but they don't play completely, not even when I load it onto my Ipod.
    Any idea why this is?

  • Files disappear when selected.

I have several MP4 and M4V files on an external MyBook Studio 500 GB hard drive. All but 4 show a small preview. These remaining 4 show the QuickTime logo, but when I select these files, they disappear. If I then click away and then back to this folder, these 4 re-appear. If I use QuickTime to open them, Open is in gray. Finder will not allow me to get information about the file. I figure the file is corrupt, but how can I be sure? Is there a way to recover/rebuild these files?

  • MTS files jerky when played back in the Editor of Premiere Elements 12

    Hi ATR
I know there is only you that helps us Adobe users with problems!!
I have now got Photoshop 12 and premiere Elements 12 set up yey!! so now I want to start my editing
So I go into Premiere Elements Editor and choose my files which are on my hard drive
These are MTS files that have been taken with my Sony Cybershot DSCHX20V however when I try to play back the videos they are jerky so I am unable to edit them
Now I know I asked this question before when I had the trial of 13 and you got it working for me but I cant find the answer
There is no orange or green line so I am unable to render the videos
In the project settings it says display format as 25fps Timecode
Frame size 1920 hoizontal 1080 vertical
    Hope you can help
    Jilly

    Morning ATR
The camera was set for AVCHD and so the videos that were taken are in the format AVCHD mts. I since changed it to mp4 format but the videos that I want ti edit are in mts format and like I mentioned they are jerky
When I am in the organiser of Premier 12 and I can hear the playback so that is ok but its jerky as well as the editor. I've also noticed that playing back in the organizer, the playback is very pixelated?
    1. Forced Timeline Rendering
i did exactly what you said ATR and changed the time stretch to 99% and that worked perfectly!! You're a genius!
    2. AVCHD.mts versus AVCHD.mp4
I found an MP4 format video and added it to my timeline with the MTS files and that one play ok. The time stretch on that file is at 100% so do I have to keep changing this to 99% all the time or only when its choppy and jerky?
Step 3 you asked me to do the below
    From an AVCHD.mts 1920 x 1080 @ 25 progressive frames per second) project, export to Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD with Presets = MP4 H.264 1920 x 1080p25 and
tell us if the playback is smooth.
    Then, from an AVCHD.mp4 1920 x 1080@ 25 progressive frames per second) project, export to Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD with Presets = MP4 H.264 1920 x 1080p25.
Then compare the smoothness of the playback of each.
From looking at my project settings the timebase is showing 50.00 frames/second?
You have said from a AVCHD.mts 1920 x 1080 @ 25 progressive frames per second) project? Do I need to change this now?
Would you be able to tell me how to do a screenshot in windows 8 please? It would be so much easier but I am struggling to do it on the website itself
    Thanks ATR
    Jilly
