Film lines

Please excuse an obvious newbie question, but I am editing a fast action piece that desperately needs film lines. You know the ones, those lines that jump across the screen while watching an old movie? I have beeen trying to find a way to create these, but have not been able to do so as of yet. Are there any plugins that I might be able to look at for just such an effect?
Any advice would be most welcome!

Yet another free way if you own DVD Studio Pro, is to use the film grain from a template and composite it over your footage in FCP using whatever blending mode works best.
You can find the file used in the template by searching for "leader cover NTSC" and then control click and choose "show package contents". Within "contents/resources" you will find "Bluemaster_loop_NTSCv2.mov".
Copy it elsewhere on your drive and import it into FCP. Lay it on top of you video and copy the loop as many times as you need. Then use a blending mode that acheives the look you want.
I know it is a few steps to do this, but it is free and gives a very organic look. But you may not want the film to be that jacked-up, and unfortunatly, there is not really an control over the grain, jitter, lines and degree as to which it messes with your footage. You may get that control from a bonified plugin.
Hope that helps and makes some sort of sense.

  • How to spool for a file inside a procedure

    Hi,
I have a Procedure. Now that procedure writes some values into a file in /tmp directory (in Unix). Now there is a server program that reads this file does some manipulations and writest the output to a particular fiel(this file not the same as input file) in the same directory. My PL/SQL code or procedure has to keep looking for this file (output file generated by server program). How can I spool for a file in PL/SQL? Is it possible? Could you please put some light on this as of how to do it?

  • Remaining quality of stop motion animation using jpeg photos in i-movie

Creating an animation in i-movie using photos in jpeg-format from i-photo, I would like to know if the quality of the jpeg-photos inserted into the i-movie-film-line remains the same during the process working with i-movie.
Can I save the photo-data inserted into the i-movie film-line several time without its quality becoming less and less?
    Thank you for your help!

    Welcome to Discussions.
iMovie saves your media ( video, stills, audio) as imported. When you save a project you are saving the instructions you have given iMovie. The media is kept intact.

  • Cropping and Transforming on 16:9 to 4:3 with Pillars

I currently use a Canon XH A1 in HD mode to capture 8/Super 8 film. As you know this old film lines up more closely to 4:3, so I have to crop it in final cut X, and use transform to center it. I have beeen mostly been eyeballing it for center, but that can be off a bit or a little.
My question is, how can I make my viewable image size consistent across all the film I crop and transform. Is there an overlay that can give me the exact dimensions every time?
I can use the transform to enlarge, or crop to shrink if necessary, I just want the pillar boxes to be in the same place all the time. Any help would be appreciated.
I am using 10.0.6. Disgesting first with Imovie and then importing the Imovie Event Library from within Final Cut X.

you could do the math once on one clip.. Then write down the numbers and enter them into the transform x/y fields.
Should be faster than eyeballing each and every...
    i.e the center of of a 1920x1080 is 960 & 540

  • Importing subtitles into DVD Studio Pro 4 that were created FCP Studio 6

    Greetings!
So in all the DVD Studio Pro 4 documentation, I couldn't find any work flow that allowed you to create subtitles, via *Text or Boris 3D Titles* in Final Cut Pro Studio 6 and then export or import your work into DVD Studio Pro to be used in the subtitle fields... Is that possible?
After painstakingly entering in subtitles for a feature film line-by-line, timing them perfectly to picture and making them look beautiful with crisp-text & a slight drop-shadow... It would be wonderful to import those files (as graphics files? DVD Studio Pro can import those...) in our DVD for release, with optional subtitles-- Instead of making/encoding 2 versions; with & without subtitles.
What is the best way to export these files, created for the film subtitling in *Text or Boris 3D Titles* so that we can import them into DVD Studio Pro 4 subtitle tracks... Could they be exported with an Alpha Channel so that the background is transparent? And will this then be excepted into DVD Studio Pro 4 to be placed in the subtitle fields?
Please help us conquer this seemingly-necessary procedure... I would really hate to think that to achieve this task we'd have to re-enter, re-design & re-time ALL subtitles to make our DVD... All of your suggestions would be most appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jason

OK-- I love that I've found a way to answer my own question on this forum (but actually I must credit my buddy James for finding out about 'TitleExchange Pro') It looks pretty cool and should do exactly what I've asked about: Exporting/ Importing subtitles made in FCP to DVD SP...
TitleExchange Pro is a unique tool which makes complicated things simple.
If you ever wished to get your titles out of FCP into DVDSP (or another DVD authoring application), get titles into FCP from another source like DVDSP or STL, or ceate a QT with all your FCP subtitles without the need of rendering (and get automatic selection of language) or just "equalize" your FCP titles TEP will be the right tool.
There's a slight catch but it might be worth it, if this works as well as it states...Cost 135 EUR:) You can download a limited demo version that works for 30 days & 50 titles...If anyone wants to give their feedback on this software, please post it here-- We'd all be interested.
Download & more information about this process at: http://www.spherico.de/filmtools/TitleExchange/
Also, check out this video tutorial on the product... It explains exactly how to do the task-at-hand... http://www.studiodaily.com/main/minisites/finalcutpro/f/mtutorials/6851.html
Hope this finds you all well--
    Peace,

  • Love version 9 but 1 anomaly I have just encountered

I have a video that uses the old film effect. I can render it to mpg or wmv and the effect works fine with the film lines animating etc. BUT when I render it to any kind of quicktime file the old film effect is frozen and doesnt animate. Can anybody recreate this? Doesnt matter what codec either. I have a great machine and all the latest drivers including quicktime most recent version. May be a bug. Your thoughts please.

I already had the latest quicktime installed when I intalled premiere
elements 9. Are you saying I need to reinstall quicktime? Seems a little
screwy since the codecs are machine based and premiere elements only
provides a wrapper to use them.

I do some VJ-type work, involving playback of QuickTime files from the computer to projections, and I get good results using ProRes 422. That's convenient, because ProRes 422 is such a great editing codec, too.
Traditionally, VJs use PhotoJPEG codec, which also works well, but it's a bad editing codec. So you would have to export an edited master, then convert.
If you want it to look as good as possible, definitely schedule some time to test the footage on the wall. You may want to change the color correction of your footage to match the projectors. And if you feed the video wall some flat gray, you can see if any of the projectors need to be  adjusted.
I'm not sure what application you're using for playback, but QuickTime Player 7 works well. It has an option to play fullscreen on an external monitor (View > Present Movie…).

  • My downloaded film has a white line at the bottom

My download of Guardians of the Galaxy has a white line at the bottom of the film.
This has also happened with some other rental films recently.
How do I get rid of the line?

    Hello,
If it's still under Warranty have Apple look at it.

  • What is wrong with my phone if it is discolored like a negative film and has flickering lines?

I dropped my Iphone 4 last week, and when I checked it next the screen had severe discoloration, similar to a negative film affect. When I go to the lock screen it is a white screen with flickering horizontal lines on it. On my main screen there are also some lines at the top. I have tried resetting and restoring it and that did not help. And I have also looked at setting to see if that was why my screen was negative, and that was not the problem. Does anyone know what may be wrong with my phone?
When i take a screenshot the normal colors comes back for a second or so and then go away

What's wrong is most likely you broke it.
Take it to the Apple Store along with your credit card. An out of warranty replacement will cost you US$149.

  • Grey Lines appear on my film

Currently i am useing a Canon XL1S witch uses mini dv tapes. I recently went and filmed some more fottage on a tape that i preveiously used and knew was good. After i went to go upload my fotage onto my mac using a fireware to mini dv cable (Witch conected the camera directly to the mac) i found that the fottage contained grey lines takeing up almost half the shot that was not there when i was looking threw the lense filming. The lines are also on the older fotage. I Tried viewing the fotage on another camera and the lines are still there. If anyone knows if this is an issue with the camera doing this to tapes or a way to recover fotage please let me know.

    Hello ASuicidalBullet,
Based on what you describe of this issue, it sounds like the heads on the camcorder need to be cleaned.  You can do this with a dry tape head cleaner.  Typically you run it for 10-15 seconds, but directions per tape may vary so check before using.  This will clean the vide heads and ensure nothing internal is causing this.  After you clean the heads, use a different tape and continue to use tapes that are all of the same brand.  This should resolve the issue you are having.

Is there a phone number to call Adobe.  I go around an endless loop pressing their contact info tabs?  Maybe someone at this sight can help. I am new to digital photo - I have been a B&W film photographer for many years. I have a problem with a Macbook Air.  It was working fine - I was using LR and a message came on the screen that said something like the memory was dangerously low.  I stopped and tried to delete LR files.  I couldn't do it.  I closed the program and tried reopening and got the message that there is not enough memory available to open LR.  I contacted Apple.  They spent a half hour on the phone with me and eventually told me they didn't know how to help. The tech said that LR had gobbled up all the memory and said I should contact Adobe and ask where and how my photo files are stored and to delete them.  I have several back-ups.  Thanks - Arthur

This sort of error message only comes up for Lightroom when your hard disk is full. Indeed this has nothing to do with internal memory as that will be intelligently be dealt with. If you have a mac Book Air that is not so surprising as the cheapest versions come with very small hard disks and if you shoot raw with any recent camera, you'll fill up your hard disk very quickly and you can probably only store a few months of pictures if you are a typical photographer. So the bottom line is that you need to create some room on your hard disk. You should move some of your originals to an external hard disk. You can also delete some of your backup copies of your catalog file that Lightroom automatically generates every few days and that quickly gobble up hard disk space. So first figure out how full your hard disk is. To see that, go to the apple menu, hit -> About this Mac -> More info->Storage. You should see your internal hard disk on top and you'll find that it is almost entirely full with photos. Now find your Lightroom catalog file using Finder. It is usually in a folder in the Pictures folder in your home directory. You should see a Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat file, a previews file and a folder called backups. Inside the backups folder, you'll find a lot of subfolders. They have names that show the dates the backups were created. If you have backups of your entire hard disk, you can delete these backups when they are older than a few months. I usually only keep the last 4 around. Just drag the folders into the trash can on the dock on the bottom of your screen and empty the trash. This will probably free up enough space that Lightroom will already run again. Now start thinking about where you will want to store older images. If you have a good USB3 or Thunderbolt hard disk that is probably the best option. There is a video here by Adobe that has some instructions on how to do this: Is Your Hard Drive Full? Here’s How to Move Images to Another Drive in Lightroom. « Julieanne Kost's Blog If that doesn't work because you don't have enough hard drive space to run Lightroom yet, here is another set of instructions to move your files using the finder to the other hard disk: How do I move only my photos to another hard drive, leaving the catalog where it is? - The Lightroom Queen. If you follow that, as soon as you confirm all your images are on the new hard disk, you can delete them from your internal one. She is not so clear about that part but if you don't delete the originals that you moved off you don't free up space. You should move the folder structure over to the new hard disk and then reconnect the folders in Lightroom. That should make it refind all your images.
That said, if you are uncomfortable with the computer in itself, your best bet is to find a local photography club. There is invariably a Lightroom savvy person in there that could help you move your files. That might be your best bet if you are uncomfortable moving these yourself. A general mac savvy person like you would find at an Apple store or so generally will not be able to help you with this except when they are photographers themselves and know Lightroom. You might get lucky with that.

  • Exported film has ghost like effect on it

    Final Cut Pro X
I've had this problem once before but I haven't found out how it's caused or how to prevent it.
I exported the film using Source - Apple ProRes 422
When I watched the film every time the person moved fast their outline doubled and was made out of lines.
    Any suggestions?

It's interlaced. If you look at on a computer you'll see the interlacing. The format is designed for television display not computer display. You could try copying your edited program into a 1080p project and see how that looks.
