Filtering a drop down list

Hi,
I am very much a novice and got through by trial and error so far.
I am creating a form in which I want clients to select (in the first column) the type of product they own (lets say A,B,C,D,E....etc)
In the 2nd column is a list of solutions so prod 1, prod 2, prod 3 etc
Based on what they enter in column 1, I want my list in column 2 to be filtered to show only the solutions applicable to their product.
If they enter product 'G' : list in column 2 filters to a choice of prod 3, prod 5 or prod 7.
If they enter product 'D' : list in column 2 filters to a choice of prod 1, prod 3, prod 4.
Can this be done? If so, is it possible for anyone to explain how to do it...bearing in mind my novice status
Would be hugely grateful if anyone is prepared to give it a go.
Thanks in advance.
Peter.

One way to do this would be to only add items to the 2nd dropdown list after (and depending upon) the selection from the 1st dropdown list. Using Javascript to find the selected item (selectedIndex) then using addItem to only populate the 2nd dropdown with the items you want to appear there for selection.

  • Columns in af:table rendering multiple times when filtering drop-down list

    Technology: JDeveloper 10.1.3.0.4 SU5, ADF Faces/BC
    Page design:
    Master-detail jspx.
    Each section is an af:table.
    Drop-down lists created using instructions from http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/tips/muench/screencasts/editabletabledropdown/dropdownlistineditabletable.html?_template=/ocom/technology/content/print
    Requirement:
    Data in a drop-down list on a child record needs to be filtered based on data from one or more columns in the currently selected row of the parent record.
    Issue:
    Drop-down lists have been successfully filtered using a couple of different methods, however, any time the data from the parent record is used to filter the data the columns in the child af:table begin to render multiple times. Navigating through the parent rows may cause the child records to have the correct number of columns displayed or multiple copies of the columns displayed.
    Removing any reference to the parent view object and hard-coding values instead causes this behavior to disappear.
    Each of the following methods has been tried. Each filters drop-down list data correctly and each causes apparently random extra column renders.
    1.     Cascading lists as per: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/tips/mills/cascading_lists.html
    2.     Drop-down list based on view object that takes parameters.
    3.     Set where clause for drop down list in a method on the app module.
    4.     Set where clause for drop-down list in a new selection listener method for the af:table.
    Question:
    Is there a solution available that will filter the drop-down lists correctly and prevent the extra columns from being rendered?
    Thank you for any help that you can provide,
    Joanne

  • Filtering in excel - not all options display in drop down list

    I have found an issue with the filter drop-down list in Excel 2010. I have now been upgraded (by my employee) to Excel 2013 and same problem still exists.
    Problem: I highlight the row containing the column headings; then click on filter (available via the Home tab); then click on the down arrow in the column of interest (in this case "Council Names" column); the drop-down window appears but not all
    council names are displayed in the selection list, even though those council names are still in the list. I am aware of the 10,000 option limit with the selection list, but my spread sheet has well under 10,000 rows (unless there is something hidden that I
    do not know about).
    I have found work-arounds for the problem by searching google for answers to similar problems. I have also spoken to my employee's IT HelpDesk. I will explain the work-arounds I have found below. However, my main concerns now are:
    (1) What is the cause of the problem? Is there are better fix that addresses the cause, rather than having to use work-arounds?
    (2) Is the issue an indication that the spread sheet has been corrupted in some way? - I need assurance that this is not an indication that the spread sheet is unstable and such problems could multiply or already be existing. (The reason I ask
    this is that I had an earlier version of the same spread sheet where the problem did not occur, but it appeared in a later copy - could the copying of the sheet/workbook have caused the problem?)
    Workarounds found:
    (1) Select the entire sheet, then select the filter button in Home tab
    (2) select all the columns manually (click in top left cell and drag down until all data selected), then select filter button
    (3) Ensure all rows in the column of interest are filled in, then select filter button
    I would really appreciate any answers/assistance.

    Hi Jan,
    Thank you very much! Yes you are right - I have looked at the Current Region and the Council Names within that region match those in the filter list. The Current Region does not contain the entire sheet.
    [By the way - there were some errors in my original post: employee should be employer and in my description of the problem the following should read
    "...even though those council names are still in the spread sheet". I assume that this would not change your response?]
    Further questions
    (1) It is odd, though, that an earlier version of the same spread sheet had a complete list of council names (the current range on this sheet contains all of the required rows of the sheet). How did the current region change between versions (I did not knowingly
    do it)?
    (2) Does the above mean that the file, workbook or spread sheet is damaged/corrupted in some way? If yes, can this be corrected and how?
    (3) In addition to (2) above - what is the safest way to copy an excel workbook to minimise risk/avoid future corruption? [I have been copying and keeping earlier versions, partly for testing reasons, but also as a safety measure for the project as
    we are making changes all the time and may decide we wish to go back to the previous version(s)].
    Regards and thanks again,
    Bea Rogers.

  • SAP Design Studio 1.2 sp01 Filters logic is required for drop down list component

    Hi all,
                   I am working with sap ds 1.2 sp01,In dropdown list, assume it has X,Y,Z. So defaulty it shows first  "X' value in Dropdown list , but in Croos tab from DS_1, it is not related to "x" value, it shows overall Values In formation,but i want "x" value Information.. How can i get in DS?, PLEASE HELP ME OUT.
    .below logics i applied in drop down list component.
                 DS_1.setFilter("Dimension Name", DROPDOWN_1.getSelectedValue());
    and below logic in Application on Startup event:
    DROPDOWN_1.setItems(DS_1.getMemberList("dimension name", MemberPresentation.INTERNAL_KEY, MemberDisplay.KEY, 10));
    Thanks
    Thiru.G

    Hi,
    Try adding "DS_1.setFilter("Dimension Name", DROPDOWN_1.getSelectedValue()); " after
    "DROPDOWN_1.setItems(DS_1.getMemberList("dimension name", MemberPresentation.INTERNAL_KEY, MemberDisplay.KEY, 10));"
    on startup event too.  You should tell the application that you need to filter the data, even if you don't select it manually from the dropbox, in other words ; on startup.

  • Trying to get Pivot table drop down list to affect bar chart below it

    Hi,
    In BI Answers I have a pivot table and a bar chart below it. At run time, I can choose a value from the
    drop down list for the pivot table, but the bar chart below it doesn't react to the new value chosen
    from the pivot table.
    Does anyone know a way to get the bar chart to receive new values, permeating down from a table view
    pivot table above it on the same report (apart from using prompted filters for the whole report).
    Many thanks,
    Jake

    you may want to try this...
    in you bar chart criteria, set prompted filters of all the dimension fields u want from the pivot table.
    in the pivot table, set action links on these dimension columns and loop it back to the current dashboard page.
    now, when u click on a value on the pivot table, the dim values of this will be passed as a parameter to the the bar chart filter set and your bar chart will change accordingly...

  • How to get Date value from database and display them in a drop down list?

    Hello.
    In my Customers table, I have a column with Date data type. I want to create a form in JSP, where visitors can filter Customers list by year and month.
    All I know is this piece of SQL that is convert the date to the dd-mm-yyyy format:
    SELECT TO_CHAR(reg_date,'dd-mm-yyyy') from CustomersAny ideas of how this filtering possible? In my effort not to sound like a newbie wanting to be spoonfed, you can provide me link to external notes and resources, I'll really appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Rightbrainer.

    Hi
    What part is your biggest problem?? I am not experienced in getting data out of a database, but the way to get a variable amount of data to show in a drop down menu, i have just messed around with for some time and heres how i solved it... In my app, what i needed was, a initial empty drop down list, and then using input from a text-field, users could add elements to a Vector that was passed to a JComboBox. Heres how.
    package jcombobox;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import java.util.Vector;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class Main extends JApplet implements ActionListener {
        private Vector<SomeClass> list = new Vector<SomeClass>();
        private JComboBox dropDownList = new JComboBox(list);
        private JButton addButton = new JButton("add");
        private JButton remove = new JButton("remove");
        private JTextField input = new JTextField(10);
        private JPanel buttons = new JPanel();
        public Main() {
            addButton.addActionListener(this);
            remove.addActionListener(this);
            input.addActionListener(this);
            buttons.setLayout(new FlowLayout());
            buttons.add(addButton);
            buttons.add(remove);
            add(dropDownList, "North");
            add(input, "Center");
            add(buttons, "South");
        public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
            if (e.getSource() == addButton) {
                list.addElement(new SomeClass(input.getText()));
                input.setText("");
            } else if (e.getSource() == remove) {
                int selected = dropDownList.getSelectedIndex();
                dropDownList.removeItemAt(selected);
        public void init(String[] args) {
            setSize(400,300);
            getContentPane().setLayout(new BorderLayout());
            getContentPane().add(new Main());
    }And that "SomeClass" is show here
    package jcombobox;
    public class SomeClass {
        private String text;
        public SomeClass(String input) {
            text = input;
        public String toString() {
            return text;
    }One of the things i struggled a lot with was to get the dropdown menu to show some usefull result. If the list just contains class references it will show the memory code that points to that class. Thats where the toString cones in handy. But it took me some time to figure that one out, a laugh here is welcome as it should have been obvious :-)
    When the app is as simple as this one, using a <String> vector would have been easier, but this is just to demonstrate how to place classes in a vector and get some usefull info out of it, hope this answered some of your question :-)
    The layout might have been easier to write, than using the toppanel created by the JApplet and then the two additional JPanels, but it was just a small app brewed together in 15 minutes. Please comments on my faults, so that i can learn of it.
    If you need any of the code specified more, please let me know. Ill be glad to,

  • Drop down list based on log in username - php mysql

    I have a drop down list of client names on a php page that filters a second drop down list of site names.
    At the moment, any user who logs in can see the entire list of clients, however I want to filter the list based on their username log in.
    This is the entire page code, the section in bold is the drop down list in question:
    <?php

    $MM_authorizedUsers = "asguser,admin,member";
    $MM_donotCheckaccess = "false";
    // *** Restrict Access To Page: Grant or deny access to this page

      // For security, start by assuming the visitor is NOT authorized.
      $isValid = False;
      // When a visitor has logged into this site, the Session variable MM_Username set equal to their username.
      // Therefore, we know that a user is NOT logged in if that Session variable is blank.
      if (!empty($UserName)) {
        // Besides being logged in, you may restrict access to only certain users based on an ID established when they login.
        // Parse the strings into arrays.

    I think I need to amend the sql statement to something like this - but I haven't quite got it right:
    SELECT DISTINCT * FROM qry_test WHERE username = colname GROUP BY client_name ASC
    Where do I drop the code for the colname info?
    name:colname
    type: text
    default value: -1
    run time value: $_SESSION['MM_Username']
    Thanks!

    I don't do PHP but it would be something like:
    $sql = sprintf (SELECT DISTINCT * FROM qry_test WHERE username = %s GROUP BY client_name ASC, $_SESSION['MM_Username'] );
    or you can just embed the session variable into the sql string.
    But why are you using the GROUP BY clause? If you just need a distinct list of names, use the DISTINCT keyword and reduce your select list to only the needed column.

  • Display look up column as drop down list in a web part in SharePoint 2013

    Hi,
    I have a look up column in SharePoint 2013 calendar list.I want to show that field with values in the page as drop down list to filter the data based in selected value.
    Is it possible through OOB or javascript.
    Please help .
    Thank you.

    Hi  ,
    According to your description, my understanding is that you want to  filter a calendar based a look up column in SharePoint 2013.
    Calendar View not support OOTB filters connection. it is disabled for calendar view, you need to change view(not calendar view) so OOTB filters works and get connected to your view.
    You can achieve this using combination of jQuery and SharePoint OOB techniques.
    For jQuery filters refer to the  blog: enter SharePoint List Filters using jQuery
    Also you can filter Calendar View Web Part using JQuery and SPServices:

  • Refreshing drop down list in a web template based on a query view

    Refreshing drop down list in a web template based on a query view
    I have just developed my first set of portal pages displaying the results of Bex queries and query views in the SAP Netweaver portal. I developed the pages using web application designer. Each web template created with W.A.D is using a query or query view. In one template I have that is using a query view I am using a variable in my Bex query. This variable is of type customer exit, is set to variable is ready for input and calls some ABAP code which returns the current fiscal week number and year. When I run the query or query view in isolation through Bex analyzer the variables gets populated correctly. In my web template I have associated my variable from my query view to a drop down list box. However when I run the Iview created from this template the query results get refreshed but my drop down list box does not, it still shows last weeks week number. How do I get the drop down list box to refresh with the latest result from my customer exit variable?

  • Prevent Identical Selection in Drop Down List in an Expanding Table

    Hi All,
    I have a 2x2 table in which the top row is a header row and the bottom row 'Row1'. Row1 Cell1 has two buttons in it, one to add a new Row1 using Javascript click instance script:
    this.parent.parent.instanceManager.addInstance()
    ...and one to remove any Row1 using Javascript click instance script:
    var rowNum = this.parent.parent.index;
    this.parent.parent.instanceManager.removeInstance(rowNum);
    Row1 Cell2 contains a datadropdown object.  Basically, when a user adds an extra Row1, I need to prevent them from selecting a previously selected item from the dropdowndata list.  I'm having trouble figuring it out because I'm trying to put together exit instance script (or should it be validate script?) that is trying to reference Row1[*].  In simpler situations where I have two fixed objects, I have just been doing this as a FormCalc exit script:
    if (Object1 = Object2)
    then xfa.host.messageBox("You can't select the same thing again")
    and xfa.host.resetData("Object1")
    endif
    ... which prevents the user from selecting something with the same rawvalue by alerting them, then clearing the field.
    Hope this makes sense and that someone can help!  Thanks in advance to all the adobe gurus out there

    Hi,
    Would it be possible to filter out the choices in the drop down list that have already been selected.  If so you could try something like this JavaScript in the preOpen event of your drop down.
    var dropDownItems = [ "abc", "def", "hij" ];
    var rows = Table1.resolveNodes("Row1[*]");
    for (var i = 0; i < rows.length; i++)
        var row = rows.item(i);
        if (!row.DropDownList1.isNull)
            dropDownItems = dropDownItems.filter(function(element) { return element !== row.DropDownList1.rawValue});
    this.setItems(dropDownItems.join(","));
    The first line initialises a variable with all the possible values and then we go though each row filtering out the ones already selected.
    You will probably have to change the form object names to suit you form, but here is my sample to test the code, https://files.acrobat.com/preview/eb0256dc-af30-4f7c-9187-469ba84464a4

  • How do I pass a username form variable from a drop down list/menu to another page?

    Hi,
    I have a login_success.php page that has a drop down list/menu (which lists usernames). I want the user to click on their user name, and when they click the submit button the username information to be passed over to the username.php page which will contain a recordset, sorted by username.
    How do I pass the username info from the drop down list/menu to the username.php page?
    The drop down menu is connected to a recordset listUsername, I have filtered the recordset with the Form Variable = username, and I have used the POST method to send the username to the page username.php. I'm not sure how to structure the php or which page to place it on.
    <form id="form1" name="form1 method="post" action="username.php">
         <label for="username_id">choose username:</label>
         <select name="username_id" id-"username_id">
              <option value="1">username1</option>
              <option value="2">username2</option>
              <option value="3">username3</option>
              <option value="4">username4</option>
         </select>
         <input type="submit" name="send" id="send" value="Submit" />
         <input type="username" type="hidden" id="username" value="<?php echo $row_listUsername['username']; ?>" />
    </form>
    Could somebody help me please?
    Thanks.

    I would not post the variable over, In this case I personally would send it through the URL and use the $_GET method to retreve it. For Example.
    <html>
         <head>
              <title>Test Page</title>
              <script type="text/javascript">
                   function userID(){
                        //var ID = form1.userIDs.selectedIndex;
                        var user = form1.userIDs.options[form1.userIDs.selectedIndex].value;
                        window.location = "test.html?userID=" + user;
              </script>
         </head>
         <body>
              <form id="form1">
                   <select name="userIDs" id="userIDs" onchange="userID();">
                        <option>Select a User</option>
                        <option value="1">User 1</option>
                        <option value="2">User 2</option>

  • Direct Database Request - Add Drop Down List

    Hi,
    I have created a direct database request and would like to represent the output in table format. How can I add a page drop down filter, I would like to move two columns as page drop down lists and also be able to view the columns in the table.
    I know how to acheive this with a pivot table, but can this also be done with a table layout?
    Thanks

    Here is the answer to your specific question: No, you can't do "page drop downs" in Table View. You will have to use Pivot Table as described in previous posts.
    You will have to use dashboard prompts to get your choices. You are probably saying, "but dashboard prompts must be built on a Subject Area column and I can't select it because I am using a direct database as my source. So how do I create the prompt?"
    Good question. My question is, on the columns that you need as the "drop down filters," are those columns in any existing Subject Area? I know that your request is built by direct database, but if the specific column you need for your dashboard prompt can be found in a Subject Area, then you can use that Subject Area on which to build your dashboard prompts.
    You can add a WHERE condition in your direct database to receive the presentation variables. Read below to learn how:

  • Drop down Lists problem

    Hi
    I have two drop down lists.
    One called P2_PRODUCT_GROUP which has a LOV.
    Also another called P2_PRODUCTS which has another LOV.
    I want P2_PRODUCTS to be filtered based on the selection I make in P2_PRODUCT_GROUP.
    I've used the following SQL statement for the P2_PRODUCTS LOV:
    select     PRODUCT d, ID r
    from     PRODUCT
    where ID = :P2_PRODUCT_GROUP
    When I run the page, it doesnt display anything in the P2_PRODUCTS drop down list at all, even after I select a PRODUCT in P2_PRODUCTS nothing shows in P2_PRODUCT_GROUP.
    What am I doing wrong?

    Hi Adam,
    that's the classical cascading lov problem. It's not necessary to do a page submit roundtrip, you can use AJAX instead.
    Have a look at Carl Backstrom's AJAX example at http://htmldb.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=11933:37 or have a look at my generic cascading lov which is part of the ApexLib Framework http://inside-apex.blogspot.com/2006/11/generic-solution-for-depending-select.html
    BTW, my solution also can handle a popup lov as a master.

  • TextBox does not update when drop down list selection changes

    I have drop down list the user can select a client name from. Once the client is selected and the "view report" button is clicked it the report has a textbox that displays the Client name or it is supposed too.
    The report will display the first client name but any subsequent client name does not display on the first. I am pretty sure that is because I have chosen the "Dataset" where the both the "values' have "first" in front of the field.
    How do I get the textbox to update to match as each client is chosen from the drop down list? I cannot use the report "parameter" I am passing to the stored procedure because the drop down list's parameter is the database name not the client
    name.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Sue

    Okay, sorry but I am just getting back to my report. I still cannot display the Client Name in a text box at the top of my report. The textbox must be dynamic because my client name can be one of many that is picked from a drop down list box.
    I added a textbox and tried to use the "join" with my Parameter - clientname.
    In the textbox expression I used the following:
    =JOIN(First(Fields!ClientName.Value,
    "GetDatabaseName"),",")
    I got this error message:
    [rsRuntimeErrorInExpression] The Value expression for the textrun Textbox1.Paragraphs[0].TextRuns[0] contains an error: Overload resolution failed because no Public 'Join' can be called with these arguments:
        'Public Shared Function Join(SourceArray As String(), [Delimiter As String =  ]) As String':
            Argument matching parameter 'SourceArray' cannot convert from 'String' to 'String()'.
        'Public Shared Function Join(SourceArray As System.Object(), [Delimiter As String =  ]) As String':
            Argument matching parameter 'SourceArray' cannot convert from 'String' to 'Object()'.
    Preview complete -- 0 errors, 1 warnings
    I also tried setting up a "filter" on the clientname using these instructions
    Right-click the dataset (GetDatabaseName) to open the Dataset Properties.
    Click Filters in the left pane, add a filter like below:
    Expression:[DBName]
    Operator: In(multiple-parameter) or =(signal-parameter)
    Value:[@DBName]
    I get an error message too which I am not even going to display.
    I can set it up and run it as long as I don't want to change the value in the "textbox" to match the value in the drop down list. I am totally frustrated at this point. Why won't it work?
    Simply put - I want the value selected in my drop down list box to match the value in my textbox at the top of my report if drop down list says "Susie" then I want "Susie" in my textbox or if drop down changes to "Bobby" then I want Bobby to show up in my
    textbox when I generate my report.
    Any suggestions of what else I may need to try?
    Thanks for the help.

  • Is there a way to filter a drop down list by using the result main data display from"GetUserProfileByName" when open the form.

    Hi
    Is there a way to filter a drop down list by using the result main data display from"GetUserProfileByName" when open the form?
    The second source has a huge list of company names that can be narrrow by email work.

    I'm not sure if I understood your question clearly but here is a good resource on how to get attributes from "GetUserProfileByName" web services:
    http://blog.mangroveweb.com/pre-populating-an-infopath-from-with-mysql-data-using-a-net-web-service/using-sharepoints-getuserprofilebyname-web-service-to-retrieve-ad-account-information/
    Regarding filtering dropdown list then this could be done by applying form on-load rules.
    Hope this helps
