Final Cut Pro to Avid for broadcast

Hi,
I use Final Cut Pro to produce 30 TV spots.
I dont own Beta or DVCPro50 decks so i burn QuickTime Uncompressed 8 bit files.
At the broadcast station, they drop the QuickTime movie into Avid media composer v.12.
We had 3 choices for import setting in Avid:
1) RGB
2) RGB Dither
3) 601
601 gave us the more accurate image, better contrast that seemed quite the same as i saw in my FCP editing suite.
What are the best FCP export settings and best Avid import settings to avoid any shift in luma and chroma ?
QuickTime Uncompressed 8 bit is YUV ?
Is Avid able to read YUV ?
thanks

There are currently 3 main television standards used throughout the world:
NTSC - National Television Standards Committee. The oldest existing standard, developed in the USA. First used in 1954. Consists of 525 horizontal lines of display and 60 vertical lines. Sometimes irreverently referred to as "Never Twice the Same Color." Only one type exists, known as NTSC M.
SECAM - Système Électronique pour Couleur avec Mémoire. Developed in France. First used in 1967. A 625-line vertical, 50-line horizontal display. Sometimes referred to by wags as "Something Essentially Contrary to the American Method" or SEcond Colour Always Magenta!" Different types use different video bandwidth and audio carrier specs. Types B and D usually used for VHF; types G, H, and K for UHF; types I, N, M, K1 and L for both VHF/UHF. Different types are generally not compatible.
PAL - Phase Alternating Line. Developed by German engineer Walter Bruch and the German electronic corporation Telefunken. Walter Bruch patented his invention 1963 and the first commercial application of the PAL system was in August 1967. Also a 625/50-line display and variant of NTSC. Proponents call it "Perfection At Last." Due to the cost of the enormous circuit complexity, critics often refer to it as "Pay A Lot". Different types use different video bandwidth and audio carrier specs. Common types are B, G and H; less common types include D, I, K, N and M. The different types are generally not compatible

  • AVCHD to Final Cut Pro to Avid - how?

I filmed AVCHD material using a Sony HDR-SR12E. First, I put the footage in Final Cut Pro via the special logging dialog (is there a way to adjust the codec FCP puts the footage in?). After editing the footage in FCP, I would like to export the material using a codec, Avid can read, because I need to get the material to my editing company, which uses Avid.
    My questions:
    1. What codec uses FCP to import AVCHD and is it possible to change that codec, for example to Avid MPEG 50 mbit?
    2. Which codec should I use to export the AVCHD footage out of FCP in order to import it to Avid again? I want to lose as little quality as possible, of course.
    3. Is AVCHD a MPEG codec, which I think it is (MPEG 4, right) and therefore a upper field first codec? Would it, in this case, be appropriate to export the footage with FCP using a Avid MPEG 50 mbit codec?
Just for info: After editing the AVCHD scenes with Final Cut Pro and exporting the stuff to an Avid codec, I want to import the footage to Avid in order to get the .mxf files which I want to deliver to my production company via external hard disk. Is there a better and easier way to transfer AVCHD footage to an Avid?
Thanks a lot for your kind help.

You won't be able to convert to MXF, but you can download the Avid Quicktime codecs from AVID.COM and then export to those. That will be the best you can do.

  • Export project from final cut pro to Avid

What are my options to create a workflow that implies doing my last trims on Avid (Adrenaline and Nitris?)
My idea is to create almost ended videos on Final cut Pro 5 by myself and expend a last day or two on an Avid Nitris to do the final touches, mixing audio and output the stuff...
the videos are industrial video and small budget commercials that requires more effects that Final Cut can offer me...
    THANKS IN ADVANCE

First off, you'll need PRO EXPORT FCP>AVID from www.automaticduck.com.
Then you'll need to recapture all the footage used in the sequence into the Avid, since FCP and Avid capture media differently.

  • Can I use Motion 5 without Final Cut Pro but maybe for iMovie?

Hi guys, if I buy Motion 5 can I use it to create a project without Final Cut Pro or X or what ever?! And can I create transitions for iMovie?
    Thanks

Stelo08, yes, Motion will export in a handful of formats.
h264 is the most popular, but did not support transparency, which you would likely want if you wanted to do lower thirds (titles).
Motion will export in prores 444 which which supports transparency, but I do not know if it works in imovie.
(I tried it in Camtasia 2.3 and it did not there, but it seemed to work in ScreenFlow 4.03)
Additionally, you can import video footage into Motion, so worst case scenario, you could pull a shorter scene into motion, do your overlays, export that scene and then add it back into imovie.

  • Final Cut Pro logo wanted for end credits

Is there somewhere I can download an Apple Final Cut Pro logo for insertion at the end of my project, in the credits... something to the effect of... 'Edited with Final Cut Pro' in the FCP font from Apple ?
    thanks in advance.

I found the same thing after Googling "edited by final cut pro logo"

  • HT5127 how do i get the final cut pro X trial for an additional 30 days

My trail 30days for Final Cut Pro X expired but I remember reading that you can get it for an additional 30days is this true?

There are 2 ways  .............   you buy a new Mac (or use a different one) and the trial will work for a further 30 days.
This way you can keep using the trial forever, but it will cost you around £1000 every month to renew your computer.
The other  way that is free  ............  at the end of each month you completely erase the hard drive and reinstall the OS and all the apps etc.

  • Proper Motion to Final Cut Pro 5 workflow for highest quality in Final Cut.

I have read several post on Motion 2 to Final Cut Pro. I am somewhat unclear as to how to get the very highest quality Motion 2 project into Final Cut Pro 5. I am currently creating a new DV project in Motion 2, as I am working in DV in Final Cut Pro 5. I notice the Motion 2 files look blurry inside Final Cut Pro 5 when I import the Motion project file and add it to my sequence timeline. Clearly I am doing something wrong. Should I ever export from Motion as a Quicktime movie, and then add that Motion Quicktime movie to the sequence timeline? I know that the Animation codec gives the highest quality from Motion, but what about when you are using the Motion project file in Final Cut Pro 5?
As always thanks in advance for taking the time to read and reply to my Post,
    Sebastian

if you're exporting using the DV codec, Quicktime displays the clip at a lesser resolution than the clip actually is, and it will appear blurry on a computer monitor.
open the clip in QT, go to "Window>Show movie properties". select the video track in the top portion of that window, then the "Visual Settings" tab. Check off the "High Quality" checkbox at the lower right of the window.
this only affects DV codec clips, from what i understand.

I think I am to the point that iDVD and iMovie don't help. Do I have any FCP options available?

Final Cut Studio 2...that includes FCP 6. But finding it to buy NOW will be tricky. Pretty much only eBay at this point.

  • Final Cut Pro or Express for HD DVD???

I have a brand new HD Camcorder (Sony HDR-SR1 - 30Gb HardDisk) and would like to import my HD movies to my iMac/G5/20"/1.8Ghz/Superdrive/1Gb RAM and burn it in a highest resolution, or if all possible in HD format. Also, I have Final Cut Express 2.0.3,Popcorn 2, and iLife 6(all latest version). I'm willing to learn, switch, and purchase any necessary software (with some limitation on hardware) to complete my task. I would very appreciate if you please share your knowledge.

  • Final Cut Pro X workarounds for Final Cut Express users?

I'm new to FCPX after using FCE for 6 years (I don't know if I was the last FCE holdout out there). While there are some neat features of FCPX, I couldn't help but notice some glaring omissions (to me at least), of which I discovered a workaround. So, I'm posting what I've discovered so far:
    1. No text XY coordinates in Titles. FCE let you set the origin of text location by typing in XY coordinates.
Workaround: Don't drag the text's position, keep it centred. Double click the title on the timeline, and under "Video" in the inspector you can adjust the XY coordinates of the entire video.
    2. Titles with transitions latch on to the nearest video. As FCE was track-based, the empty space on the track before it let you simply "fade in" the effect so to speak, so the video remained unchanged while the title transitioned in.
Workaround: Create an empty title before your desired title and use the transition between those two titles. You are essentially "creating" the empty space that was formerly in a track.
Also, if there are official answers to these without workarounds, I will gladly hear them.  I might add on as I acclimate myself to this.  Feel free to add your own that you've come across (I couldn't find a thread like this, even way back when X first came out).

IIf you use the transfirm function in the viewer the XY coordinates appear in the upper left as you drag. Or as you say you can dial in XY values for the title in the video tab. Not sure what the problem is with that as a positioning scheme.
How a transition effects the title is depending entirely on the transition. They are all different and have different behaviors. A fade up using a cross dissolve does not require a blank clip in front of it. Some transitions also have a preset to effect from black which can be overridden by right-clicking on them.

  • Premiere Elements 10 Able to Export XML For Premiere Pro, Avid, Or Final Cut Pro?

Is there a way to XML the projects or timelines out of Premiere elements so they will open in Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro or Avid if I later switch to one of those programs?
I wonder why you can't open a Premiere Elements project in Premiere Pro?

Actually, within a somewhat narrow range, you CAN Open PrE Projects (PREL files) in a contemporary version of PrPro. For instance, I can Open my PrE 4.0 PREL's in PrPro 2.0. When you get several version numbers apart, it might not work. As a for instance, I cannot Open PrE 7, 8, 9 or 10 PREL's in PrPro 2.0, but PrE 9 PREL's do Open in PrPro CS 5.
One thing to remember, however, is that PrE has some features that do not exist in PrPro. Examples will be Themes/Instant Movies, NewBlue FX Effects/Transitions, etc. If you have used any of those features, you will loose them, when you do Open the PrE PREL in PrPro. Note: PrPro Projects (PRPROJ files) will NOT Open in PrE. These same limitations also exist when Opening older Premiere, or PrPro Projects in later versions - some of the older versions had 3rd party features, that do not exist in later PrPro versions, but the program is pretty neat, in that it will tell you of, say a missing Transition, will tell you the TimeCode where that was used, and also give you the name of the missing Transition. Effects can be a bit tougher.
I cannot comment on AVID, or FCP, but I would rather doubt that the PREL's will Open in those programs. Maybe someone with those, plus PrE, can comment.
Now, PrPro does offer some X-program support, with features like EDL's, etc., but PrE does not support those.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Does Final Cut Pro offer native support for DVCPRO HD 720p25?

I would like to online a DVCPRO HD project on a Final Cut Pro suite with an HD i/o card, but I just wanted to make sure that the latest Final Cut Pro offers support for DVCPRO HD 720p25 before making the jump.

Thanks for the info. I will check if the production company's Blackmagic HD card supports DVCPRO 720p25.
Just for your information, we have offline edited on an Avid MC Adrenaline. We have had the biggest problems ingesting the media since we shot on a Varicam at 25p and the Avid wouldn't accept firewire. So we ended up cutting in 30i. Which now ***** since the online is a pain.
It seems like we will export an EDL per video track from the Avid, then hopefully find a company or a person who will convert our 30fps EDL to 25fps via the software EDLMax24. Then import the EDLs into a Final Cut Pro HD suite with a Blackmagic HD card via HD-SDI, and online from the HD AJ-1400 deck. And hopefully that will work.
The only outstanding thing is to find someone with EDLMAX24 since it retails at 600USD.

  • Provide Feedback for the Final Cut Pro User Manual and Onscreen Help Here

The Apple documentation team for Final Cut Pro would like to know what you think about the Final Cut Pro 5 Help documentation (available in the Help menu):
    • How often do you use the Final Cut Pro Help? Under what circumstances do you use it most?
    • How do you find what you're looking for in Final Cut Pro Help? For example: table of contents, index, skimming, PDF links, PDF search?
    • What do you like about it most?
    • What is missing?
    • Are there any particular examples of manuals or documentation that you consider to be good models for the Final Cut Pro manual and onscreen help?
    • By what method do you usually learn a new application? For example: provided tutorials and manuals, third-party tutorials or books, training classes?
    • Did you use the Final Cut Pro Getting Started book to familiarize yourself with Final Cut Pro? If so, do you feel the book provided a good introduction to the application?
    • What do you think is the most difficult feature/concept to grasp in Final Cut Pro?
    • What's the most frustrating experience you've had with the Final Cut Pro documentation?
    • Do you prefer electronic or print documentation?
    • Are there any other delivery methods or media you think we should explore?
    • What size computer display do you typically use to view the onscreen help? For example: 15-inch, 17-inch, 20-inch, 23-inch, or 30-inch?
    • What resolution is the computer display set to when you view onscreen help? For example: 1024 x 768, 1280 x 854, or 1920 x 1200 pixels?
    • Do you use multiple computer displays?

    • How often do you use the Final Cut Pro Help? Under
what circumstances do you use it most?
Often, I much prefer that to the Manual, though the Search function is very clunky. Search for Nest for example and you'll get about 50 listings for the table of contents and indexes alone, when all I would really want is the explanation of how to actually create a Nest.
    • How do you find what you're looking for in Final
Cut Pro Help? For example: table of contents, index,
    skimming, PDF links, PDF search?
    Search.
    • What do you like about it most?
Ease of use to get through the manual instead of going through the books themselves.
    • What is missing?
Better organization of the search results. Again, if I search Nests, make the first set of results the answers that actually show me how to use the tool, not the 50 times it appears in the table of contents and indexes.
    • Are there any particular examples of manuals or
documentation that you consider to be good models for
the Final Cut Pro manual and onscreen help?
Honestly, Apple's is the best I've seen for the moment.
    • By what method do you usually learn a new
application? For example: provided tutorials and
manuals, third-party tutorials or books, training
    classes?
Just crack the app open and start. Use websites like the Creative Cow for more input and ideas.
    • Did you use the Final Cut Pro Getting Started book
to familiarize yourself with Final Cut Pro? If so, do
you feel the book provided a good introduction to the
    application?
I thought the Tutorial that came with my first copy of FCP (Version 2.0) was outstanding at introducing me to the interface and how FCP operated. I came from Media 100 and in particular, the Log and Capture operation was completely different than what I was used to.
    • What do you think is the most difficult
feature/concept to grasp in Final Cut Pro?
Media Manager. Not sure why it has to be so convoluted. Media 100 was too easy with this one. Select the Sequence to be up-rez'd, set your new format and capture.
    • What's the most frustrating experience you've had
with the Final Cut Pro documentation?
Search results using the Help menu.
    • Do you prefer electronic or print documentation?
Actually both. If the electronic search gets too frustrating, I'll pull the print manual out to find what I really need.
    • Are there any other delivery methods or media you
    think we should explore?
Not really. Internet based help is always nice, but I don't keep my FCP workstations connected to the web so that would actually create a bigger hassle for us.
    • What size computer display do you typically use to
view the onscreen help? For example: 15-inch,
    17-inch, 20-inch, 23-inch, or 30-inch?
    17" Powerbook display, 17" 20" and 23" Apple Displays and a 17" Sony Display.
    • What resolution is the computer display set to when
you view onscreen help? For example: 1024 x 768, 1280
    x 854, or 1920 x 1200 pixels?
    Highest resolution for that monitor.
    • Do you use multiple computer displays?
    Yes. 23 & 17" on one G5. 20 & 17" on the 2nd G5. 17" Powerbook
Powerbook G4 17, G5 Dual 2.0, G5 Dual 2.0 Mac OS X (10.4.5) AJA Kona 2 on both G5's, Fibre Channel and SATA arrays in use.

  • 10-bit issues in Final Cut Pro

Can anyone point me to any Apple support articles relating to the issues / problems of using 10-bit uncompressed sequence setting for online editing in Final Cut Pro ?
I know Final CUt Pro is broken for 10-bit in 4.5, 4.5HD and on but I would like to know exactly which filters are broken for 10-bit and which not etc.
I have tried searches to no avail, just getting forum discussions that highlight the topic but do not have much in the way of solid info.

You are like a lot of Avid people I know...hold on to the old old hardware because it still works. Only it doesn't. Or it does with a workaround, in this case. But I know soooooo many companies that are still using Avid 7.5 on Beige Powermacs, or Avid Express, or Meridians.
Why are you insisting on 10-bit? DV50 is 8-bit, so you are gaining nothing by going to 10bit uncompressed. Even going 8-bit uncompressed doesn't really help anything. I tell people to either use DV50 or uncompressed 8-bit if they want their graphics to look good when they edit DV. DV50 is a good solid codec. No need to convert.
If you go back to Avid, I hope it is one of the newer ones...Avid 3.5 or 4.0. Adrenaline killed it for me, made me jump to FCP without hesitation. And PC Adrenalines...the worse. But newer boxes are starting to win me over.
But then that is new equipment...more expensive equipment than FCP.
