"Find" process is running every morning for five minutes

Hello,
I upgraded to Leopard about a month ago. Not sure if this has been going on the entire time, but for at least the last two weeks, I have noticed that the "find" process is running pretty much every morning when I wake my MacBook Pro from sleep. This is really annoying because it runs for about five minutes as I'm trying to load up apps and get started on work. It brings things to a crawl because of all the disk activity is creates.
As I understand it, the find process should only run very briefly as part of the daily maintenance script. The amount of time it takes for this process to run (again, about 5 minutes) makes me think it's the weekly maintenance script that's running. But then why would that happen daily?
Finally, why is this happening in the morning at all? I thought these scripts were made to run themselves at 3am or something like that. I used to just run them manually from Terminal because I knew my laptop was never awake at 3am. Did the timing get changed with Leopard?
If anyone can shed some light on this, I'd be grateful. It'd be nice to just be running the scripts manually again.

I'm going to guess that the find is simply part of locate's periodic update process - it takes an inventory of files on the disk so that you can find them easily using the locate command.
It might not be, though - there are many other reasons why find may be running.
The trick is to use ps in the terminal along with a couple of switches to reveal the true cause.
In this case ps -axjw is probably what you're looking for. The -j switch tells it to print the processes' PID information, including its parent. You should see something like:
# ps -axjw | grep find
user 22423 22420 22420 44c4618 1 R s003 0:07.27 find -s /
In this case you can see one find process running, PID 22423, launched by user user. In addition, it's parent process is 22420 (the third column), so now you re-run ps asking for that PID via the -p switch:
ps -jwp 22458
USER PID PPID PGID SESS JOBC STAT TT TIME COMMAND
user 22420 21324 21324 44c4618 1 S s003 0:00.03 /bin/sh /usr/libexec/locate.updatedb
So putting this together, the first ps finds the PID and the Parent PID of the find command. The second command finds out what that parent command is. You can repeat the second command to work all the way back up the process tree if you like.

  • Used phone outside for five minutes in thirty degree fog! screen seems slightly washed out!

I know this phone is rated as ip 65 and 68 but I used this outside talking for five minutes in the cold fog. Note the screen seems slightly washed out and blurry, like light/dark gray text on white background like this site is especially harder to read now!
Is my phone permanently messed up? Should I let it dry overnight? Or am I just being a hypochondriac when it comes to this? Thank you all very much!

  • IPhone 4 turns off EVERY morning for about 30 minutes

Every morning on my drive to work, my iPhone 4 turns itself off, and it turns itself back on after about 30 minutes.
No matter what combination of buttons i press to reset it or turn it on, nothing happens until it decides it want to come alive again.
When i plug it into the computer during this 30 minute window, iTunes tells me that the phone is in restore mode.
Then between 8:55 and 9:05 it just turns on.
    What is this all about!!!

You plug it into the computer during your drive to work? Scary
Take it to Apple or call Apple tech support. Something is amiss and it may be unique to your iPhone.

  • Wicd locks up my computer for five minutes before connecting.

Hello, a few days ago wicd-curses just inexplicably stopped working properly. I can use it at both of my houses with no problem (for both wired and wireless connections), but when I try to connect at school or any other place except for my two houses, nothing will happen, my keyboard will completely stop working for about five minutes. Then things work again and wicd connects me to the internet. This all started happening around the same time as the kernel update a few days ago, although I don't know that it's a problem with the kernel or how it was installed or being used or whatever. I've also noticed some considerable performance decreases since the wicd problem that weren't there before. Somethings will freeze for a few seconds then come back online.
Whenever I try to use wicd to connect I get the following error message. I've tried to restart the daemons (both wicd and dbus) but to no avail. Any help is appreciated. If you need more configuration information I can provide it. Thanks.
DBus failure! This is most likely caused by the wicd daemon stopping while wicd-curses is running. Please re start the daemon, and then restart wicd-curses.

Hello, It's been a little longer than I anticipated but oh well.
I turned off the wicd daemon and that solved all the slow response/performance decrease problems I'd had before. I suspect that when the kernel updated, wicd hadn't been properly equipped to handle certain software on my computer, and this in turn caused dbus to act all wonky, and making some applications slow to respond. I would bet it was my wireless driver (the broadcom wl one) that was the problem, but I doubt i'll ever find out.
For now I'm going to try a different networking client, probably networkmanager although it seems a little tricky to try and get that to work in xmonad. If wicd ever updates and fixes itself, I'll probably go back to it.
    Thanks for all your help.

  • I suddenly get this connection is untrusted after being on website for five minutes with it working perfectly I want to turn this off.

I was on the website like five minutes with it working perfectly. My firefox install is new as of two days ago. It suddenly decided the website's certificate is not updated. It wasn't updated five minutes ago, but was working perfectly then. I do not give a ''durn'' what firefox thinks. I want to see this website. There is no ignore this BS and take me to my website button. I want to know how to turn this off permanently. I tried updating firefox and I still have the same issue. Make it stop. My firefox is updated as of five minutes ago to the very newest version. My windows version whatever is also automatically updated so that's not it. I do not use any local antivirus because I am behind a firewall. It can't be the firewall because other computers in my network not using firefox have no problem with the website. Also cannot be my windows because other computers which are just ghosted over copies of the same as this one one my network with same exact default settings also with no changes to them just like this one but using another web browser have no trouble at all with this website. Seriously, nothing is different on the other computers on the network except the use of firefox. They work fine for this website. Firefox brand new update even does not work. Tell me how to fix it. I tried to do the stuff listed in certain other posts here. Apparently this version of firefox is different from the versions talked about when I google because certain parts of the answer don't fit what I see when I try to follow them with this version.

Make sure that the system time and date on your computer are set correctly.
If "I Understand the Risks" is missing then this page may be opened in an (i)frame and in that case try the right-click context menu and use "This Frame: Open Frame in New Tab".
You can retrieve the certificate and check details like who issued certificates and expiration dates of certificates.
*Click the link at the bottom of the error page: "I Understand the Risks"
Let Firefox retrieve the certificate: "Add Exception" -> "Get Certificate".
*Click the "View..." button and inspect the certificate and check who is the issuer of the certificate.
You can see more Details like intermediate certificates that are used in the Details pane.
Note that some firewalls monitor secure (https) connections and send their own certificate instead of the website's certificate.

  • Connection goes on for five minutes / off for five minutes

I connected a new Airport Express today. Using Safari or Firefox, I have five great minutes with no problems whatsoever, then five minutes off. But the interesting fact is, iChat and Mail keep on working. It's just the browser. I tried with and w/out OpenDNS, and it's the same. Sometimes Mail stops as well, but iChat or Skype are always connected... Help!

One interesting thing to mention is that, when I run the diagnostics, all the lights are green and it says it appears to be working properly... but I can't surf the web.

  • ICR Process 003 - Running Data Selection for Accounts without a Group CoA

    Hi Everyone,
I am getting an error "Account 'CoCode'/xxxxxxxxxxx: Group Account Number could not be determined" on the reconciliation of some accounts when I run FBICS3.
Currently, the operating chart of accounts is not assigned to a Group Chart of Accounts.  This may change after Go Live u2013 for instance due to consolidation requirements. But for now we are without group CoA.
I am wondering if this is a requirement for the ICR program to have this field active on the GL master data and populated?
If not, is it possible then to  switch off the error message or change the settings somewhere so that the error is not generated?
How will this effect accounts without a group account number?

  • ISync seems to run every 10 or 15 minutes, and every time it asks for my keychain password.  Can I either change the rate or prevent it from requesting the password?

    Help!

    Your keychain is probably locked.
Open up your Applications folder and then go into Utilities. Open up Keychain Access. Click on Keychain Access at the top beside the Apple then click Preferences. From there go into the First Aid tab. Make sure "Keep my keychain unlocked" is checked. You may have to unlock the keychain one last time by clicking the lock at the top left of Keychain Access.
That should take care of it. If not, you may have a deeper issue.
let me know what happens and I can advise where to go from there.
    Regards,
    Britt.

  • After installing 10.5.6, finder and quicklook server hog cpu for 10 minutes

I installed 10.5.6. Now upon every restart the Finder and Quick Look Server use 60-80% of my cpu for 5-10 minutes. This means that I can't really do anything until these processes are done because they cause constant delays. This did not happen in the previous version of Leopard, and if it's intentional on the part of Apple, it's a mistake. Very very annoying. Any ideas how to get this to stop?

    stuartwgibson,
    How did you install 10.5.6?
If you used "Software Update," you might want to try installing the Mac OS X 10.5.6 Combo Update.

  • 8800 GTS 512 OC - Runs in 3D for few minutes then freezes

    Hi there.
I just got an 8800 GTS 512 OC, upgrading from a Radeon 1950 XT. The card works fine in 2D (it's in the machine as I type this). But when I try to play any game, it works fantastically for a few minutes (or seconds depending on how intensive the game is), and then freezes completely, with sound looping endlessly. I have to reboot to get out of it.
I got the latest WHQL driver from Nvidia, 169.25, but that didn't help things. Oh, and don't worry, I removed the old ATI drivers and ran DriverClean Pro to remove any hidden remnants before I installed the card and drivers.
I cannot use MSI Live Update, because as soon as I install it, I get a BSOD after rebooting:
    flashsys.sys,
    page fault in non-page area
    0x00000050 (0xBAB78000, 0x00000000, 0xBADF71B0, 0x00000000)
Thinking it might be an OS issue, I then reformatted the system and ran a clean install of windows, but the same thing happened again. Makes me suspect that this is a hardware issue, since it seems the new WHQL driver is working jsut fine for other people.
My system has worked fine until this card was installed, but here are my system specs for reference:
    System specs:
E6600 at stock speed cooled by Zalman 9500 mod with Noctua 120mm fan
Asus P5K-Deluxe, with P-ATA, Firewire, LAN og WLAN controllers disabled.
    2GB Corsair Dominator 8500 @ 1066 v/ 5-5-5-18, 2.2V
Corsair HX-620W PSU (should be more than enough juice)
D-Link DWL G510 PCI Wifi kontroller
NEC Optiarc 7170 Sata II DVD burner
    Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500MB Sata II (houses C: partition + E: storage)
    Old Maxtor 320GB Sata I (storage, D:)
Gigabyte 3d Aurora case fans: 1x120mm front, 2x120mm back
    and of course:
MSI 8800 GTS 512 OC, ved 730core 1944 mem, with Forceware 169.21 WHQL
Running legit Windows XP Professional SP2, fully updated.
    other processes:
    ESET Smart Security
    Logitech SetPoint
    Soundmax panel for onboard sound
The card also fails while testing with ATITool artifacts scanner. A worrying thing I have noticed is that the fan speed does not adjust as temperature increases. Instabilities while running ATITool start when the card hits around 75C, and gets worse and worse as it passes 80C. Fan still runs at same speed. Might be a fan controller issue, but this card should not be having problems at 75C-85C.
I should specify, that it does not actually fail the artifact test...it just starts freezing, then going again, then freezing, then going again, until it freezes completely.
I really do not know what to do next. I think my card is just plain faulty, so thinking of RMA. If anyone has any ideas or advice, please please help me out.
    Best regards,
    Mikkel.

Setup VGA mem. freq. to 1872Mhz and re-test.
OK, I just tried out your suggestion, but sadly, the same thing happens. I should add that it does exactly the same thing when just running the 3D view
Also that the card emits a high-pitch modulating whining noise (it is not bearing noise from the fan, it sounds more like a high-pitch capacitor buzz), is that supposed to be there?

  • How to run a BPEL process once every morning?

    Hi All!
I am working on a BPEL process which will send email greetings to one/group depending on the day it is, like birthday/national festivals etc. I want this process to run by itself every morning once, and do the work.
But I don't know how to make the process run once every morning? Please let me know how to schedule a BPEL process to run every 24 hours.

  • Is it possible to write a report that calls a set of pages every morning?

    HI
I have a short question concerning the report engine.
Is it possible to use the EP report engine in order to write a script that would execute a certain set of iviews each morning?
The idea is that the iViews in question always take a lot of time when called in the morning. Once loaded into the cache they load fast. So I would like to find a way of taking the burden to wait from the first user by implementing a report that runs every morning.
Is this possible? If yes, where can I find some further information on that issue?
    Thanks for your help,
    greetings,
    Mingolo

    Hi,
Don't know of any easy way of doing this internally,  but it should be little trouble to execute a browser script every morning.
Basically you can create a link to the page(s) in question using the NavigationTarget url parameter. Then it is just to call iexplore.exe <url> . If you don't have SSO you need to automatically submit the login form but this is also possible (search for j_user on SDN).
The browser script is then called from a scheduled task

  • Using windows 8, firefox 16.02 freezes for 5 minutes on every page

using windows 8, firefox (16.0.2) freezes for about 5 minutes on every page. Problem started two days ago. suspected Adobe flash, downloaded latest adobe update (Windows8-RT-KB2770041-x64.msu), fixed the problem for one windows 8 session.
Have reset firefox, default home page is the only page that does not freeze for five minutes.
Looking at task manager, firefox is sitting idle during the crash, it not using excessive memory.
My firefox is submitting crash reports about every 5 minutes.
Firefox is unusable in this state, I am resorting to using IE.

Looks like a problem with the Flash plugin or the plugin-container process.
You can check for problems caused by recent Flash updates and try these:
*disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
*disable protected mode in Flash 11.3 and later
*disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin
*downgrade the Flash player to version 10.3 or 11.2

  • Settings open automatically every five minutes

This is a strange one.  About every two to five minutes the 'Sound' settings window opens and becomes the active window.  It happens when I am typing, using the mouse, or even doing nothing at all with no programs open.  When I just leave it open, it will come to the foreground with the same regularity.
It is annoying and counterproductive but the biggest concern is that this is evidence of something hostile--perhaps some malware.  ps -a does not show anything weird but I might not know it when I see it.   There must be a process that is doing this, perhaps there is a way to debug and log that?
This has been happening for two days.  No new software, updates, or hardware in that period.

I've never had this problem before but u might have something in your preference that does this so next time u can look in every single file on your computer because as well as i know, the preferences have alot of wacky things or it could be some code your typing on your keyboard that does this because command has alot of weird codes.
