Finder crashes in 10.7.5 with sandisk ultra 16GB flash drive
I have tried using 3 different 16GB SanDisk Ultra flash drives, and all 3 lead to a finder crash. When the drive is first put into a USB slot it will appear to mount and the contents are visible. I then eject the drive and put it back in. At that point I may get the message that the drive was not propoerly ejected, or I may not. Sometimes I have received the same message when I try to eject the drive. Under any circumstance, the finder seems to crash (and is listed as not responding in the force quit application) and it will not restart appropriately.
I do not believe this is a hardware issue because if I boot into BootCamp with Windows 7 running the flash drive can be mounted and unmounted without any difficulty. Further, it can be mounted and unmounted on several PC's that I have tested. I also don't believe this is a formatting issue because the flash drive can be mounted and unmounted successfully in another iMac that is running OS 10.6.8.
I have wondered if this is related to some program running in the background, so I have booted in Safe Mode, but when in Safe MOde the flash drive won't even mount. Lastly, I have reset the PRAM and this hasn't helped.
I appreciate your help. Here is the full report:

Issues re: using SanDisk Cruzer Mini flash drives on a Mac
Given some strange behavior, I'm wondering whether SanDisk Cruzer Mini flash drives cause known problems when used with Macs.
Two problems I've had:
1. Not being able to re-save edited Word documents back to the flash drive without first renaming those files. If I try to re-save a document in the normal way (i.e., by just clicking 'Save' to overwrite the existing version on the drive) I get error messages about 'permissions.'
2. Getting 'insufficient disk space' error messages when trying to save to the flash drive, even though according to Get Info the flash drive still has plenty of space left.
Also, does completely wiping a flash drive using 'zero disk' (in Disk Utility or other programs) work exactly the same on a flash drive as on a hard drive?
Thanks. It would seem SanDisk Cruzers and Macs have some compatibility problems. You are the second person with problems in two days. I'm not sure why you should have the problems you describe as USB flash drives should just work. I can suggest you try repartitioning and formatting the drive for the Mac rather than using the FAT32 format that usually is how the flash drives come from the factory. Try the following:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
This may help, but if you plan to use the flash drive on a Windows machine, then you will need to restore it to the FAT32 format.
And, yes, zeroing the disk works the same on flash drives as on hard drives. -
Transfer photos using SanDisk Connect Wireless flash drive
How are photos viewed when transferred from my iPhone to a SanDisk Connect Wireless flash drive and then to my iPad or my PC. Are they placed in the camera roll like all other photos?
are photos transferred from the device directly to the camera roll?
are the transferred photos then native on the iPad? Or only viewed through the SanDisk device?
once photos are transferred from iPhone to SanDisk can I transfer to the iPad and view them as if they were taken on the iPad?
can I select ALL photos from my iPhone and transfer them ALL easily to the SanDisk and the other way around? Then transfer ALL to my iPad?The following quote is from the SanDisk support site: http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10543/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xNDEw NDY4NTcxL3NpZC8xblJUYjkybQ%3D%3D
Photo storage and location once downloaded to a mobile device from the Wireless Media Drive
Where are photos stored once downloaded to my mobile device from the Wireless Media Drive?
You can use the Wireless Media Drive app to download photos from the Wireless Media Drive to your mobile device.
On an iPhone / iPad / iPod touch (photos can be viewed in 2 locations)
1. In the camera roll
2. In the photos section of the Wireless Media Drive app. Select the iPhone / iPad tab at the bottom to see photos that are downloaded to your mobile device. -
Bug report - Finder crashes in Cover Flow mode with large files
I just came back from the Apple store and was told that I have discovered another bug in Leopard. When in Cover Flow view in Finder and trying to browse directories with large ( multiple GB) files, Finder continually crashes and reboots, oftentimes with 2 new FInder windows.
I created a new user on my MBP to remove the effect of any preferences and the problem repeated itself.
Come up Apple... get on top of these bugs and issue some patches...
Not the kind of new OS I expected from a top notch company like Apple.Ah... that'll be it then, they are 512 x 512. well i guess that bugs been hanging around for quite some time now, anyone got any ideas if anyone's trying to fix it? i guess making 128 x 128 icons wouldn't be the end of the world but it does seem like a step backwards.
one thing that still confuses me... an icon file contains icons of all sizes, why does cover flow not select the right size icon to display?
thanks for that info V.K., much obliged.

T400s Linux/Windows dual boot with Linux from Esata Flash Drive
This project is about a dual boot Windows/Linux system without using the normal dual boot changes in the bootloader of the windows hard drive. When I started this I found bits and pieces of information on the web but no complete description so I wrote this post.
I have done a dual boot system on my previous Thinkpad where I had partitioned the hard drive between Linux and windows. For this project I wanted to leave the windows hard drive absolutely intact and unaltered, and boot Linux from a flash drive in the esata port on the back of the T400s. Obviously this uses the F12 boot list function key to boot from the flash. The advantage of this is that Windows is totally unaltered and when I need Linux, I plug in the esata flash drive, hit F12 during the boot cycle and select booting from the esata flash drive. The reason for Esata rather than USB is simply speed. I have a nice fast Linux installation.
I used the OCZ esata flash drive but suspect any of the alternatives will work. It did not need the accessory usb cable because the Thinkpad powered the esata flash directly.
To boot from the esata drive I had to make the following changes in the bios
I left the esata flash plugged in as I went into the bios
Bios>config>Serial ATA and changed the Sata controller mode option to compatibility
Restart and back into the Bios
Bios>startup>boot - in my case the esata flash drive showed up as ATA HDD2 and was excluded from the boot order so I had to un-exclude it and move it to the point in the boot order that I wanted.
Next I downloaded a linux installation iso and put it on a CD - in my case opensuse. Then booted from the CD
From now on this instructions are specific to opensuse and yast but can be generalized to whatever Linux is being used.
In my case yast came up with a good set of suggestions for automatically partitioning the flash drive but then crashed during the partitioning itself. So I rebooted and specified the partitions manually.
A fat32 partition left as a partition which both windows and Linux could see (in my case about 20% of the drive) (/dev/sdb1)
An extended partition with the remainder of the drive (/dev/sdb2) which contains the following logical partitions
A linux Swap partition of 2GB (/dev/sdb5)
A linux /home partition –the remainder of the drive (/dev/sdb6)
A linux /root partition of 8GB (/dev/sdb7)
Yast automatically suggested mount points of C,D,E for the windows partitions. Unfortunately because of the way the Thinkpad hard drive was laid out Yast had C assigned the ThinkPad Service partition and D assigned to the SW_Preload (or main windows partition). However there was an edit function that allows for the reversal of those mount points so that the windows C drive is mounted in Linux as Windows/C thereby avoiding confusion. I had already backed up and removed the Thinkpad factory install data so I did not have to deal with that. Yast suggested Windows/E for the mount point of the FAT32 partition on the flash drive, which I accepted.
The yast install configurator made all this manual selection easy, and after the manual configuration the partitioning worked perfectly.
Next step was Linux user configuration which went fine
Next was booting.
In the section management tab
delete the windows 1 and 2 options (since we are not dual booting directly)
In the boot loader installation tab
uncheck boot from mbr ( this stops the install from installing Grub and dual boot on the windows c drive
check boot from root partition (this installs grub and all associated files in the Linux root partition (/dev/sdb6)
I believe that the correct procedure at this point is to click Boot Loader installation details which will bring up the Grub device map. In the device map there will be a line for the fixed hard drive (aka the windows drive) and a line for the esata flash drive. When the installer started up these were in hard drive and esata drive order. However when we boot directly from the flash the esata drive will be grub drive hd0 and the fixed hard drive will be grub hd1. The device map order needs to be changed to reflect this ie the esata drive should be first not second.
I did not do this and ended up initially doing Grub command line editing to boot and later manually editing the grub files using information I had previously learned the hard way and through google.
At this point let the installer go ahead and install Linux. After doing this it should come back and tell you to reboot. Do not do it yet because we need to install the MBR into the flash drive.
I suspect that there is a way of doing this in Yast running from the Live CD but it was not obvious to me so I used the manual method that I have used before.
Open a root terminal
Mount /dev/sdb6 to /mnt/sdb6 (my linux root)
Touch /mnt/sdb6/boot/grub/flag
The purpose of this is when we go looking later at the grub command prompt we need an easy to find unique file
Start grub and do the following
#grub
grub> find /boot/grub/flag
(hd1,5) -- the result of the find in my example
grub> root (hd1,5) -- using the result of the find in my example
grub> setup (hd1) -- install mbr -- my example parameters - if you get this wrong you will trash some other drive!!!
hopefully grub announces success
grub> quit
Reboot and select the flash drive. In my case I still had the grub devicemap wrong and had to edit the grub commands during boot to tell grub how to find the correct partition and then edit them again after booting
Typical linux install issues that we all always seem to have and can be solved with a little (or a lot of) google research.
As I said at the beginning I now have an untouched windows installation and a nice fast Linux installation. I hope that this will be of some use to someone.Hi chrissh
i tried this exact procedure... on the exact same notebook (T400s). However, as soon as I set the
Bios>config>Serial ATA to "compatibility", I cannot use my default Windows installation! I immediately get the "blue screen of death".
I doubt I did anything differently since this is the first step of your procedure and my laptop is brand new!
any idea? -
Error code -36 with FAT 32 USB Flash Drive
When copying files from my hard drive to a FAT32 formatted USB flash drive I keep getting error code -36 errors. I reformatted the flash drive to Mac OS Extended and the files copied fine. I formatted it back to FAT32 and the error returned. I need to use this drive with PC computers at school and can't leave it in the Mac format. Anyone know of a solution to this problem. It didn't do it with my G4 powermac and OS 10.4 but does with the mac mini with 10.6.
This is a problem I've been dealing with since getting a new Macbook for christmas. In my case I use a Macbook with 10.6.2 at home, networked to a winxp computer, also use FAT formatted USB sticks for backups and taking files to work....and at work I use a mix of winxp machines and older macs running 10.3 and 10.4. I move files around between them all the time, and have had this annoying error -36 file copying problem with the 10.6.2 macbook since day 1.
I did read about the dot_clean solution, and it does seem to work....sometimes. But the problem ISN'T just when copying a folder full of files. I also have the situation where I work on files in InDesign, and then export a PDF directly to the desktop. I then try to copy that ONE pdf file from the desktop to a FAT USB stick OR to an internet-accessed Appleshare volume, and I will get the dreaded error -36. MOST of the time when I get the error on a single file like this, it did actually copy and is useable on the USB stick / Appleshare volume and I can ignore the error. But sometimes not. Either way, it does show that the problem isn't just with folders of files, or even with the situation of copying a file from mac to windows to mac and then getting the error the next time you try to copy it to a win formatted volume.....you CAN get the error with an individual, just-created file in 10.6.2.
I sure wish Apple would fix this already! -
I am considering buying a 27" iMac with the i7 processor, 16GB RAM (I can add another 16GB without throwing out any RAM that came with the machine), and the faster graphics card with 4GB video memory. I am wondering whether I should get the 3TB Fusion Drive (of which only 128GB is flash drive), or whether I should get a 256GB internal flash drive and rely on a Thunderbolt external HD for storage.
For reference, my current Applications folder is less than 100GB, my Library folder is less than 15GB, and my Users folder is almost 400GB. However, almost 300GB of my Users folder are two subfolders: Movies and Pictures. It seems that I don't need to store movies and pictures in the Users folder, and I don't, for the most part. Anything else need to be in the iMac's "home HD"?
I know Apple offers 500GB and 1T flash drives as well, but they are too expensive.
Having the HD outside the iMac would have the benefit of not having to send in the entire computer in case the HD went down.
Would I have a performance penalty having the HD external, even with Thunderbolt? While I generally agree with what Mr. Kaufmann has already said, if you are doing video editing on your Mac, a 256GB system drive is pretty thin and could be a source of future frustration, even trouble. Your system needs disk space (aka virtual memory) to operate in addition to whatever you have stored on the system HD. Various applications also require temporary storage on the system HD ... especially resource-intensive apps like video, photo, audio (media) apps. You already appear have ~115GB between the system, applications & user library. That's nearly half of a 256GB drive ... not much left for working storage.
While editing video, especially anything highdef, you can easily need 50-100GB or more for operation. And while Final Cut Pro X allows you to specify a different hard drive for its render & cache files, etc., if you don't specify an alternate location it defaults to your system HD for that storage. Even so, FCPX and similar apps still need working space on your system HD. I suggest that 500GB is the bare minimum for a system HD on a Mac used for video editing, 1TB would be better.
'Course, if by movies you only meant viewing movies then this is a totally moot point. -
Time capsule with new iMacs plus flash drive
I have just bought a new 2 TB Tme Capsule - but, in setting it up it is not clear if it will backup both the internal 1 TB hard drive AND the flash drive (256GB)
Is this possible? If so how? I have been around in circles with the Time machine settings and they are not clear over this (to me at least!)
Also, I have connected my Macbook Pro to the Time Capsule via Ethernet cable - so, can this also be backed up on the same Time Capsule?
Am I correct in assuming the Time Capsule will arrange three partitions for each of these backups ? If, as I hope - it also backs up the flash drive! Please - can anyone help me sort this out?
I have set up my new 2TB Time Capsule using airport utility. Wireless network is working fine for my iMac, Macbook Pro and iPad2. My iMac has a dual drive - 256 Flash drive and 1TB hard drive
When I open up Time machine on my iMac and choose 'Select Disk' I do NOT see the tw drives as separate drives (to be backed up) - my list shows only iMac i7 hard drive, Data (on 'my name' Time Capsule) and an icon with 'Set up Pther time Capsule.
I get the same list on my Macbook Pro - just Data and 'Set up other Time capsule'
So, my questions are
If I switch on Time machine backup - will it backup BOTH the flash drive and the 1TB hard drive?
Will I 'see' these as separate backup drives - or just a list of files?
Does the same apply to my Macbook Pro?
I have several other external, firewire hard drives - when I attached one to my MacbookPro it apeared on the list - so, would this ne backed up as well?
Thanks Alan
PS I have 700 GB of photos on my iMac Hard drive - so I do not want to start any Time machine backups until I know that it is backing up what I want it to back up! -
Problem with SanDisk Ultra 32gb
Having problems with this memory card. I am unable to download my photos from my Canon Digital camera onto my MacBook Pro into I photo. It comes up as unreadable files. However, I was able to download my first set of photos without a problem. Any ideas?
Hello, you can try to connect the card to a different computer or use the camera as a reader along with the mac and see if you are able to download the files from the card other option is to format the card with the pc and see if it was an error with the card

Camera Connector with SanDisk Ultra II SD Plus USB
Hi,
I recently got hold of this SD card with a USB connector built in, in the hope that I could connect it straight to my iPod Photo via the camera connector. I have been using the camera connector with the Belkin USB2 17-in-1 card reader, but hoped i could ditch the reader and have less to carry.
Basically this SD/USB card does not work.. Fair enough, its not listed as compatible, but the Belkin media reader is not listed either.
The thing that puzzles me, is that the SD card shows as a MassStorage device when connected to the powerbook via its USB connector, the same as the media reader (Apple say check this and it should work) the only other thing is the power maybe, the card says 500mA, so i check the card reader and that is 500mA also.
So, is this something that maybe one day might work as more devices become compatible, or do i cut my losses now, and put the thing on ebay, and just get a cheaper standard SD card, and go back to lugging the media reader with me.
Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Keith.Well now you've got the card in FAT_32 having formatted it in Disk Utility I can't work out what's not working. I suggest you restart the Mac and switch off all your devices and try again.
It may also be worth re-formating the card using the phone or camera (if possible). I suspect the problem here is that you're trying to access a 4Gb card through a camera that may or may not support 4Gb cards. Have a look at this compatiblity list.
It may be worth considering a card reader if this is the case. They aren't expensive and will be much quicker and easier than connecting through the camera. Unless of course it works if you connect your phone via USB using the k750i's USB Mass Storage facility.

Finder Crashes, Restarts, Crashes, etc.
I was coping a PowerPoint file from a co-workers memory stick and Finder crashed. When I restarted, the Apple Menu Bar flashes continuously and my hard drive will not appear. I am able to login into my admin account and the systems works fine. The reason I am assuming the Finder is crashing is when I logged into my admin account and opened up the Console, the console was showing the Finder.crash.log and every time Finder flashed the menu bar in my personal account and entry was posted to the log file.
Here is the top portion of the Finder.crash.log file.

Any suggestions on how to return my personal account to proper operating condition without lossing all of my settings?
JimHi there Jim,
I had a very similar problem. It was actually when I'd just done a security update which clashed with one of my startup apps. I'm guessing that something you have launching on startup is for some reason crashing the Finder, which is why you are getting an infinite loop, where it keeps trying to launch the offending app over and over again... Maybe M$ installed something there when you launched PowerPoint.
Can you gain access to your machine through another admin account? Or can you launch the System Prefs while this crash is happening? If so then make your way to the Users CP and remove all your login items. If this solves it you'll need to add them back in one by one.
I know there's a way of logging in as "root" but I can't remember exactly how you do it so I wouldn't try that unless someone very clever on here can tell you how. -
Mavericks Finder crashes - Without Google Drive
Hi Everyone,
So - I decided to upgrade to Mavericks last weekend, finally sick of being unable to use a couple of apps that I REALLY wanted, which no longer support Lion.
Thinking that I had heaps of time on Sunday, I started the upgrade and left my 2010 MBP to itself - having recently gone through the same process on our 2007 iMac, I figured that it'd pretty much look after itself.
And so it did, so much so that I actually sort of forgot about it and only came back to it late Sunday. Running short on time then, I gave it a cursory glance and confirmed that I could login and see the more important files to be used for work Monday morning, so I didn't worry too much, that is until I had played around a little.
As it turns out, finder crashes relatively frequently, since the upgrade. At first I thought that the problem might be related to permissions, having seen upgrade of other OSs go wrong as a result of such things, however, I noticed that the mainstay of the issues seemed to be tied to my home directory, so that suspicion quickly went out the window again. Basically, whenever I open finder in my home directory, finder crashes... I can use terminal to go to a sub-directory and open it and, most of them, work fine. The biggest culprits right now, seem to he ~ and /Users - both of which cause finder to crash.
So I thought that perhaps, there was an issue with my finder preferences. I did a bit of googleing and found a number of comments suggesting that I clear out .DS_Store and the preference files - I have done this, with and without reboots/logout/restart of finder - none of it made a difference.
Next, I thought that I'd give it a try in safe-mode just to see what'd happen. So I rebooted in safe-mode and logged in - with the shift key held down - I opened finder and had JUST enough time to get excited, before it decided - once again - to crash on me.
Several of the finder crashing articles that I found, seemed to suggest that google drive could be the culprit, but as I haven't got it installed, I figured that it was worth a try to get rid of Skydrive and Dropbox in stead... While I was at it, I cleaned out some old kexts and Launch stuff that I wasn't using anyway - might as well try to clean up and hope for the best. After a reboot, I went at it again, with quivering fingers... Same result, I open a finder window to my home dir, get a flash then a crash.
In a final fit of frustration, I turned off the Spotlight indexer and the Timemachine backups - none of it has made an ounce of difference... Just ot make extra sure, I even created a new user account... The user logs in fine and everything is beautiful, until I go to /Users and get another crash, so it definitely seems to be directory related somehow.
This is the output from the crash - I'm hoping someone can spot something here
Thanks, in advance.

14Hi Everyone,
So - I decided to upgrade to Mavericks last weekend, finally sick of being unable to use a couple of apps that I REALLY wanted, which no longer support Lion.

Finder crashes when previewing videos
I'm at my wit's end. When I click on a video (.mov, .wmv, it doesn't seem to matter), Finder crashes - even in list view with icon preview turned off. I get one of two error messages indicating that it is either Finder or QuickLookDaemon crashing.
I already:
Deleted all user preferences
Deleted Flip4Mac and DivX
Ran a Disk Verify
Ran a Disk Permissions Repair
Ran MemTest86 to make sure my RAM was functioning normally
Dumped my caches

Sandisk Flash Drive Compatibility

I have Sandisk Micro USB Flash Drive, is it compatible with MAC OS?
According to Sandisk, no. While they do make USB flash drives that are compatible with Mac OS, like their Fleur or Crossfire USB flash drives, the Micro USB flash drive is Windows-only compatible. -
USB flash drive 5times faster with ntfs filesystem?
Hello,
I have a weird problem with my USB Voyager GT 16GB flash drive. I formated it in ext2/ext3/xfs/fat32 and then start copying a file >1GB in size. The speed of transfer very quickly drops to 2-4MB/s. That is very slow. And if I format it in ntfs it works as it should be 16-17MB/s in linux with ntfs-3g. I really don't get it. I've been playing with all sort of options all day and is driving me nuts Tried even another kernel with BFS and BFQ I/O sheduler kernel26-ck and the problem is identical. Tried turning of legacy support in BIOS for USB and nothing, the problem is still here. Mount it it with "async" option which gave me speed of 800KB/s... Is it possible that Voyager GT 16GB doesn't work good with any other filesystem? Or maybe I'm missing something... Clearly it isn't problem with usb 2.0 ports because all of them are 2.0 and the ntfs speed wouldn't be that good if the flash was working in usb 1.1 mode. Any thought would be much welcome
Thanks in advance,
Clouseau
Last edited by Clouseau (2010-12-24 02:42:06)I'm seriously thinkg to toss computer out throught the windows cause this problem is driving me insance. I'm loosing hours every day on constat reformatting of my USB drive. In windows no problem, but in linux, it drives me crazy! Slow! Slow! Slow! Its the same on another computer... The problem must be in schedulers, i've tried them all. I'm now on the latest kernel and it's still driving me nuts...
USB Hard disk have lesser problems than this stick... But in windows everything is fine with the stick...
And also when I copy all system slows down, it becomes unresponsive...
I'm on x64 Arch with KDE4, and my system is up to date. The problem is here for couple of years and I'm thinking really to switch back to windows cause I cannot use my computer for basic things... I mean I do not need it for Adobe Premier Pro, but I would like to transfer couple of mkv files now and then I don't want to loose two hours every time I wan't to do that... Damn, I'm mad
This is my cat /proc/interrupts. The rescheduling interrupts are very high.
