Finder Crashes on "Get Info" close - plist parse failure

For the past day, the finder crashes (restarts, I think) every time I close a "get info" window. The console shows at the same time a plist parse failure.
A fresh (combo) install of 10.4.5 was done on April 3 - problem just started showing up today tho. One possible culprit is Stuffit 10 which I just recently installed - anyone know how to uninstall it completely?
Here's my console log showing the 2 most recent crashes:

Finally been able to get back to this.
Original problem still there, but new (maybe related, maybe not) problem - I can't open the Trash from the finder (either by double click on icon or by using context menu open - Can't select it so can't use Menu Bar File Open function). I can get it to open by using Spotlight's reveal in finder function on a file known to be in the trash.
Per Baltwo's suggestion - ran preferential treatment - no problems found. Then removed all finder pref file (per Dr Smoke's instructions - problem remains. Then created new user w/ admin priv - problem remains. I also uninstalled stuffit (not much there) - and the problem remains.

  • Finder crashes on "get info"

I have been experiencing a problem where my finder thinks then crashes whenever I try to "get info" for any documents, files, drives etc. This happens when I try to get info via contextual click, command+I, etc. Any thoughts? I recently updated to lates iTunes and QT. This is annoying because I am having trouble maintaining my system without knowing files sizes.
    Thanks,

  • Finder issues and Get Info refusing to show the number of files on items on the main hard drive.

I am having finder issues. Mostly on the main hard drive. It takes ages to find things and I get the spinning wheel every time I open a folder.
So I moved all of my files to a external drive.  When I had finished transfering I hit get info on the files on the external drive and on the same folder on the main drive.  To ensure that it has copied over all the files.  Because it was acting up and not copying all the files.
Get Info refuses to show the number of files within the folders on the main hard drive. It hasppily tells me everything on any of the external drives.
I have reset, the imac.  I have re indexed 3 times.  I have deleted the finder plist files.  I have reset finder using terminal commands. I have moved nearly everything off the main hard drive. But nothing is working.
Can anyone offer any suggestions as to what could be causing my finder and get info issues.
    Any help wpuld be appreciated.

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Back up all data.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -N {} + -type d -exec chmod +x {} + 2>&-
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Finder restarts when Get Info is chosen

    Hi
I bought last week iMac G5 and I have Tiger on it installed. The mashine is great but there is an annoying problem with Finder. When you want to get the info for a file, it doesn't pop up the usual window! Instead, Finder restarts. Strangely enough, this happens only for one certain user. The other 2 users have no such problem. I tried deleting the settings of Finder, restarting, repairing user rights... But the problem is still there! If someone could give me a hint, it will be very nice

You should try to trash "Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist" file then Get-Info again to force the finder to restart, then test again.
Why doing Get-Info after trashing the file ? This will likely avoid the finder to re-write the prefs if you quit it the normal way.

  • ITunes crashed during "Get Info" now the movie won't add to the library

    Hi all,
I've been using iTunes with my Apple TV for over a year now, and this is the first time this has happened, and I'm at a loss on what to do to remedy it.
I added a number of movies to my iTunes (as i have done a number of times before), and selected them all, and clicked on Get Info, to move them from "Home Movies" to "Films", nothing new there, but this time when i clicked ok this time, for whatever reason iTunes stopped responding, and came up with the usual error of "iTunes has stopped responding....", so after I get returned to my desktop I went back in to iTunes and the movies i'd added weren't in "Home Movies" so i figured, "oh well, it must have completed it anyway, and then crashed", so i went and checked my movie list, and they aren't there either.
I figured that it just hadn't saved the fact i'd imported them, and went to add them again, but it just won't add them... i've tried adding them as multiple files, and adding them as individuals, but still to no avail.
Can anyone shed any light, or point me in the right direction for correcting this issue?
Thanks in advance for reading, and any help anyone can offer.

    Hi beau_nidle,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If iTunes quit unexpectedly while saving changes, and now will not import the movies again, I'd suggest rebuilding your iTunes library. See this article for help with this troubleshooting step:

  • ITunes crash at 'Get Info'

    Hello,
I've been using iTunes for awhile now, ever since I got my 5th gen iPod.
Recently I upgraded to windows vista, and I'm having a problem editing any of my song info via right clicking and 'get info'. Namely, I can't edit it. iTunes simply crashes right after I click 'get info'.
I've reinstalled, upgraded to 7.3.1, still no luck.
    Any suggestions? Thank you

  • What events change the Created field in, finder, get info

On my laptop, in finder, in the get info screen there are 2 fields the Created Date and Modified Date fields.
I was looking at these fields for an app that I use on my iPhone, it was listed in finder, so I clicked the get info option.
The created date and modified date were 10/16 both the same.
I have not used this app in a long time, my question is this.
What event changes the created field?  If the app was downloaded on the Iphone will the created field get updated in finder?
or if it was an update on itunes, would that change the created date in finder?
Does the created date mean that the app was downloaded and installed on that date?

Thank you so much.  That works just fine.  However, I also just discovered something.  Evidently, at least some of the fields in list view are editable.  By adding Grouping to the columns shown and clicking on the empty field, I was actually able to type whatever I needed into the field.
I have not yet tried it with other fields, but will do so to see if it works for all fields in the list view.

  • OS 10.6.8 running iTunes 10.4.1 Get Info does not have option to set 32-bit. What now?

When I start my iTunes I get a message, ""To run Ituns in 32-bit mode, select the iTunes application in the Finder, choose the "Get Info' command in the File menu, and check the "Open in 32-bit mode" checkbox in the iTunes Info window.""
There is no "Open in 32-bit mode" checkbox in the iTunes Info window?!!!

  • Finder Crashing, No Dock, Applications Crashing

I'm having serious issues with my Finder crashing. I was having font problems, and my Adobe products (InDesign, etc) would not start up so I removed all fonts except System fonts and restarted. Now the font that is displayed along the menu bar is not the regular system font, my dock is missing, whenever I try to open My Computer folder the Finder crashes (I get this code in Console: Oct 27 17:00:57 Miles-Woolens-Computer crashdump[241]: Finder crashed), I cannot run any of my Adobe products (I get this message in Console: 2007-10-27 17:10:12.703 Adobe Crash Reporter[247] 246), when I click on a menu item in the menu bar the pull down list is empty. I ran the Hardware test and found no problems, so I started up from the install disc and ran Disk Utility which couldn't repair some problems (Invalid file strings, Invalid file numbers... I'll run it again and repost exactly what it couldn't repair). I also tried reinstalling the basic system software by archiving the previous system and I got an error message that said installation failed. Does any one have any ideas on what could be happening and what I can do to fix the problem??
    I also got this message about 10 times in Console while writing this: 2007-10-27 17:16:34.332 SyndicationAgent[249] WARNING: BestCalendarDateFromString - can't interpret: 'Sat 27 Oct 2007 15:07:23 -800'

Here is what Disk Utility reports to me:
After Checking Catalog File it comes up with "Incorrect Number of Thread Records" twice.
    Then, later it says this:
    Invalid Volume Directory Count
(Lists what it is and what it should be)
    Invalid Volume File Count

  • Get Info image data missing

I have used the Finder's Get Info command and accompanying window to determine the height and width of images since the beginning of time. Today that capability suddenly disappeared. When I select an image in the Finder and invoke Get Info, under "More Info" there are two hyphens instead of the dimensions in pixels (e.g. 300x250). I tried a dozen images in various formats like JPG and TIF but the dimension info doesn't appear anymore. I'm using System 10.5.8 on a 2008 Mac Pro. All the other expected info (creation dates, name, preview, etc.) in Get Info is there except for the image dimensions.
I did not do any recent updates and haven't noticed anything else amiss. I played around with Finder prefs, restarted the system, repaired permissions, etc. Nothing brought back the image dimensions. I can use Photoshop or other programs to get the image dimensions but using Get Info via the keyboard command was a nice shortcut.

I don't directly use Spotlight - I prefer HoudahSpot's interface to the Spotlight index. I have not changed the prefs in HoudahSpot or Spotlight itself, and the Spotlight Privacy list was empty when I just now checked it.
But you are definitely on to something because after checking the Privacy List to see if any folders had been inadvertently added, I then tried Get Info again on an image file and VOILA! all the image data had been magically restored. Indeed, Get Info image data is now working for all images I have checked in the past few minutes.
Thanks for the pointer. Apparently something triggered Spotlight to prevent the data from appearing and the mere act of checking the Spotlight settings restored the "missing" info.

  • Can't open latest 64-bit version of iTunes. It says to open it in 32-bit but there is no option in "Get Info" to do that.

I use a MacBook Pro version 10.6.8. The version of iTunes I installed is 10.5.1. When I try to open iTunes, the following message appears:
Running iTunes in 64-bit mode requires Mac OS X 10.7 or later.
To run iTunes in 32-bit mode, select the iTunes application in the Finder, choose the "Get Info" commands in the File menu, and check the "Open in 32-bit mode" checkbox in the iTunes Info window.
I tried going to the iTunes Info window, but no checkbox exists for the 32-bit mode option.
    Help please. :/

Everything installs fine. However, when I run iTunes and view it in my task manager, the process is listed as "iTunes.exe * 32"
    That's normal. iTunes is a mixture of 32-bit and 64-bit componentry on 64-bit systems. itunes.exe is 32-bit.

  • Paste clipboard's contents to selected file's Get Info (Spotlight) comments

    Hi,
Could someone please help me in building an AppleScript that would paste the clipboard's current contents to the currently selected (in the Finder) file's Get Info (Spotlight) comments?
I know this can be done with an Automator workflow or Folder Action, but prefer an AppleScript.
    Many thanks!

The following script will add (a space and then the clipboard) to the comments of the currently selected file. In case there are several items selected it only deals with the first one, and there is also a dialog to edit the final content:
<pre title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor" style="font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; font-size: 10px; padding: 5px; width: 720px; color: #000000; background-color: #E0E0E0; overflow: auto">set TheClipboard to (get the clipboard)
    tell application "Finder" to try
set TheFIle to the first item of (get the selection)
set TheComment to the comment of TheFIle
set TheName to text ((length of (path to home folder as text)) + 1) thru -1 of (TheFIle as text)
if TheName ends with ":" then
set TheType to " folder "
    else
set TheType to " file "
    end if
display dialog ("Change the comment for the" & TheType & return & quoted form of TheName & "?") with title "Edit Spotlight Comment" default answer (TheComment & space & TheClipboard)
set comment of TheFIle to text returned of the result

  • 'Get Info' Bug?

I've never used a Mac before so I may be doing something wrong. I am finding many annoying aspects (normally I use Windows) but this is currently the most pressing. I have a directory where I hold files that are to be burnt to DVD. I think I have a full DVDs worth but I can't find out as 'Get Info' refuses to report the byte content correctly. The content was about 100MB too much so I removed files to bring the combined size down. I checked again with 'Get Info' and the byte count hadn't changed. To cut a long story short I finally removed every file from the directory and checked it again. 'Get Info' still shows the content as 37 files at about 4.37GB!! Is there a fix for this?

It takes the Finder a bit of time to refresh itself. Easiest thing to do is remove the files, OPTION-click on the Finder's Dock icon, select Relaunch, and the try Get Info again.
