Finder forces use of Network Applcations on Airport home network

Our network is having a weird issue. When another computer wants to use an application that computer looks for my computer's applications. Even my own computer seems to do this now. The Applications are listed under the Network instead of under my hard drive.
My Airport setting options only show "by default join a specific network." There are no other drop down options available.
If my laptop is not up and running the other computers can't use their applications without repeatedly canceling out of finding the Network Applications. Any ideas?

I have a similar problem... My Boot HD is replicated under Network Icon on one machine, but the APPs are still usable with either the Dock Application folder icon, or openimng the HD on the desktop and going to Applications.
Yours can't do that?

    Settings for wireless network connections are actually stored in two separate places on your Mac, so in addition to the correct advice offered by Jolly Giant, you will also need to delete old network listings in KeyChain Access.
    Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > KeyChain Access
    Locate the name of the wireless network that you want to delete and click it to highlight it
    Click Delete on your keyboard
    It would be a good idea to go ahead and also delete the current connection as well in case it has become corrupted. This will clear out the old settings and when you next connect to the network and enter the password, the new settings will be preserved.

    Change your router channel.  Sometimes this is all you will have to do.
    Power cycling the router.  Read the router's user manual or contact their tech support for instructions.
    System Preferences/Internet & Network/Network
    Unlock the padlock
    Locations:  Automatic
    Highlight Airport
    Click the Assist Me button
    In the popup window click the Diagnostic button.
    System Preferences/Network- Unlock padlock.  Highlight Airport.  Network Name-select your name.  Click on the Advanced button.  Airport/Preferred Networks-delete all that is not your network.
    Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined."  Click the OK button and lock the padlock.  Restart your computer.

    Check to see if an extra entry is present in the DNS Tab for your wireless connection (System Preferences/Network/Airport/Advanced/DNS).
    Delete all extra entries that you find.

  • How do I find out who is connected to my airport extreme?

    I have a motorola WPS870G wireless printserver that has an old HP LJ4 attached via parallel. I had a netgear router and all was good. I had it set up so that the router always assigned the same IP address to the print-server, and then I had my G4 set up to print to that IP address - then shared the printer to my MBP along with the other two printers attached to the G4 which is really now just a server in the closet. Anyway, when I switched over, I can't figure out how to find what IP address is being assigned to the printserver now nor how to make sure it's fixed. I've logged onto the printserver and set it to ask for the same IP address every time from the extreme and it does show that it's connected (based on the lights that are lit). I should also share that I first had to change the network SSID and the WEP pw to match the new network. I first tested to make sure it disconnected from the old network, then made sure the lights came back on for the new network. But now I cant figure out what IP address it's connected to. Ultimately, I need to be able to hard code that into the shared printer on the G4 to get everything back in working order. Any suggestions on how to get this printer working?

    I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but you can find out who's connected by using something like Airport Monitor Utility (3rd party software) or you can use Apple's Airport Utility. Apple's Utility will also let you change settings if you don't like what you find, so we'll use that for this little example.. Please read through this whole thing before you attempt it so you know what to expect at each part and how it relates to later information. Note this will only work if the parallel print-server is connected directly to the AirPort router by wireless or wired connections. If there are any in-between routers, these directions may fail to help you and you should consider reconnecting the print-server directly to the AirPort base station.
    First, write down the MAC address of the print server (or ANY other device) you need to configure for a "static" address. In this case, I mean static address not by the sense that we are not using DHCP to assign it, but in the sense that ultimately it doesn't change so your Macs and other computers/devices can always find it on the network.
    * If you can't find the MAC address of the print-server or other device in question, then the only other way to go about assigning it a non-changing address will require that you can access that devices internal network setup configurations (some helpful directions on that at the bottom of this text) and set the device's DHCP Client ID to something that you will set the Airport to look for later when it assigns the print-server its connection address. MAC Address is probably easiest to use because you may be able to find the MAC Address of the device on a sticker on its case. If you can't see a MAC Address listed on the device or it has been altered through settings and you can't access the device's setup configuration pages over the network to find its current Mac Address, you may still be able to figure it's MAC Address out by following the monitoring directions immediately below.
    Using Airport Utility v5.3.2, here are directions for monitoring and assigning addresses, etc:
    * How to see who's connected....
    1. Open Airport Utility.app
    2. Select the appropriate Airport base station.
    3. Click "Manual Setup" at the bottom.
    It will read settings for a moment, then you should see info on the station itself. If not, click the Airport logo on the left side of the top bar of icons to take you back to this top menu page and click the "Summary" sub-tab on the left below it.
    NOTE: A lot of people don't realize the fact that this "info" is actually a menu with hidden shortcuts that lead to a lot of advanced useful features that otherwise you might take a while to hunt down navigating icons and tabs above. You have to actually mouse over each line to figure that out.
    4. To find out who's connected, mouse-over the entry that says Wireless Clients until it has a right-pointing arrow in a circle appear to alert you that it's now a link. Clicking "Wireless Clients" will be a shortcut that saves you a lot of time and clicking that would equate to clicking the obvious controls above in the order: icon "Advanced", then tab "Logging", then page link "Logs and Statistics" then tab "Wireless Clients".
    Note: This info is not a static display, but an active charting of who's connected, at what speeds, with what signal to noise ratios. It updates very quickly.
    5. From here, you can click the "DHCP Clients" tab to see all the devices connected to this basestation by either wireless or wired connections and their relevant MAC addresses, etc. This page unfortunately has no direct quickly like its neighboring tab for Wireless clients, but at least you have a shortcut now to get you to this pages nearest neighboring tab which does save some time.
    Note: This info will be helpful to figure out what's going on with your print-server or other routers/devices if you know their MAC addresses. You can find the MAC address on most devices on a sticker somewhere on the bottom or back side of the device if you can't pull up a configuration page on it to tell you. Some devices can have their MAC addresses reprogrammed through their configuration pages. Be aware of that possibility if you can't find the expected MAC address connected in this list. If you can't figure out which MAC address is your print-server, disconnect it from AirPort and see that a device disappears from the list. Then reconnect it and the device that is added to the list again is the MAC address you are looking for. Write this down for the next section. If it doesn't appear in this list, then we have a real problem with the connection like possibly the print-server device's internal networking settings are messed up and need to be reset to defaults. There is some info on how to go about that at the bottom of this text.
    Now, on to forcing a DHCP device connected to AirPort routers to always use a particular address:
    Once you have an idea what the MAC address is of the device you want to force to use a static address, you can go about it two ways. Either you assign it an address permanently in its own configuration page (if accessible) after turning off its DHCP setting to static, or you can use its DHCP setting to set the address with the Airport Router automatically to the same address every time it reconnects to the network or is turned back on, etc. The steps with Airport need to start the same way in either case.
    1. Same as before, if you haven't already, open Airport Utility, select router, click "Manual setup"
    2. Click the "Internet" icon at the top. Then click the DHCP subtab.
    3. To keep other devices from "Stepping on" your address that you want to assign permanently to the printer or other device, make sure the static address you choose is outside of the range of DHCP addresses setup on this page. If not, other devices could take the address away from time to time and it will cause you headaches.
    Once that's set so you have an address protected from other devices getting assigned to via DHCP by limiting the DHCP address range not to include it, here's where you must choose which route to use to assign the address. You can either assign it in the printer's web-reachable configuration page (if you can figure out how to get to it and have the passwords, etc to do it, and its configuration is capable of accepting static addressing etc.. ) OR you can assign it directly from Airport's configuration (recommended). This is how to do it in Airport Utility from the DHCP controls we just opened:
    1. Under the "DHCP Reservations" section, we want to click the add "+" button to set up your printer or other device for a static (but assigned) address that won't change..
    2. Enter a description like "printer" or "print server" or what have you.
    3. Select reservation by "MAC Address", then click "OK".
    NOTE: You can use the reservation by "DHCP Client ID" to set this up as well, IF the device has a unique Client ID set in its configuration settings. I don't recommend doing so for two reasons. MAC Addresses are more hardware based, and thus, a more stable method of identification that isn't likely to change and cause you grief later. DHCP Client IDs are software-set and more subject to get wiped out if the device is reset than its MAC address as well there is the potential for two devices to be set to the same DHCP Client ID if one isn't careful, which would also cause confusion for AirPort. Most networking devices won't let you "fake" their MAC address using software settings, so MAC address can be considered the most stable and desirable method of identifying a non-computer on your network. Computers are the most likely culprits for spoofing different MAC addresses through software, so likely you don't have to worry about that with your print-server, although it's dependent on the manufacturer and what they gave it the capability to do.
    4. Now here you enter the MAC address (or DHCP Client ID if so directed) of the print-server or other device you want to permanently assign the address you've chosen.
    5. Lastly, enter the static IP address you want it to take on each time it is reset and requests and address again from AirPort and click done. This address will always be held available and assigned every time by Airport each time the device with the MAC address you gave it asks for a DHCP address assignment. Thus, while the device thinks its being assigned dynamic addresses, its just using the DHCP process to be assigned the same address every time by AirPort..
    6. Save the changes you just made to your Airport configurations for DHCP assignments and reservations and then after Airport restarts, power-cycle your printer or other device you just setup by matching MAC address in Airport Utility and it should be assigned the new address you just specified.
    7. AIRPORT TEST: Go back to the first directions in this piece to check the DHCP device connections. You should see the Mac address of the printer show up with the correctly assigned "static" IP address now in this list. If you don't, then perhaps the printer or other device assigned isn't set up for accepting an address by DHCP in its own settings. Usually this is a default behavior for any device connected to a network. If you can't open the configuration settings, at your option, you may find a pin-hole reset switch on the device you can use to reboot it with original hardware configuration settings that probably are set to DHCP.
    8. Don't forget to go change your print-server settings in System Preferences of all Macs connected (and printer settings of any PCs). Your Mac needs to know the print-server's new 'permanently' assigned address in order to find it.. Be sure to save the changes..
    ** Be careful that you know what you are doing if you have a device that doesn't want to cooperate the way you think it should with your AirPort router. If you can't access the devices internal configuration settings in your web browser by typing its current IP address in the URL format http://.xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, you should lookup the device manufacturer's website and search it for their support info on the device for its setup, default user-name/password and default network configuration and IP address settings to understand why you are still having trouble before you resort to resetting it by hardware reset switch. Hardware resets can sometimes have very bad results. Avoid this until the software configuration route can't be achieved by any method you try.
    If you have any PCs that need to find the print-server and that setup proves to be too difficult, sometimes it helps to install Apple's Bonjour software for PCs (running Windows 2000, XP, or Vista only).... It will try to automatically locate any printers or print-servers on your network, but also makes the set-up a lot easier in general in most cases...

    Previously I was using OSX 10.8 and Web Disk was working great.
    Since I upgraded to OSX 10.9 Web Disk Dont Attach to my compputer and give me this ERROR:

    What the command does:
    Creates a file called nsmb.conf  in your  home directory at the path ~/Library/Preferences/nsmb.conf.
    Adds directives to force SMB connections to use the SMB1 protocol.  This is slower but stable.
    Then I could use Web Disk on OSX 10.9 after executing this command in Terminal.
    But now I restarted my Macbook and now Im NOT able to connect to Web Disk and get the same ERROR.
    FInder got an error: Network file permission error
    After trying 100 times it attaches 1 time but then show this ERROR:
    Can't get <<class cdis>> "my.server.com/2078" of application "Finder".
    If this happen then I can see the files in Finder and see the Contents and Size of files but if I open a PHP file in BBEdit then it shows BLANK.. But actually it is NOT blank.
    Now Im stuck How can I solve this? All help is highly appericated..

    (in my case the CPanel provided the app for my OSx version.)

    What kind of wireless router are you using? more importantly which protocol are you connecting with? Are you and wife connecting using the 2.4Ghz band? or do you have a dual band router that offers the 5GHZ band?  Are you both connecting vie 802.11 a/b/g or n?
    The best thing to do is to go into SYSTEM PREFERENCES and select NETWORK, then select AIRPORT and click on the ADVANCED button.
    Under the AirPort tab you should delete all the preferred networks and only add back in your network with the proper security settings and passwords.
    If you hold down the option key on your keyboard while clicking on the airport icon at the top on your macbook pro. you'll seesome data that will tell you what band and mode you're connecting at, as well as in an indication of signal strength (RSSI) if you write down and post back that information it'll tell us what's going on.

    Is is possible to have my iPhone 6's wifi hotspot used to provide Internet to my wifi network on time capsule? Has anyone else had success doing this? I'm not a tech head and really know very little about things like this. Thanks. Jen 

    You can have a go using a wireless bridge.. eg the airport express will do this.. you can join it to the iphone wireless running as a hotspot.. and then plugged into the TC wan port.. the TC has to be setup in router mode.. so this is going to give you double NAT errors.. and of course errors for all the time the hotspot is turned off.. but it can work. However you might find it requires you to manually connect up each time.. If you are really going to try and do this you will manage it.. but how fiddly it becomes might put you off after a week.
    You will chew up your 5GB very fast using any streaming media even radio. So be very careful to track the usage.
    Apple should have built in the TC the ability to plug in a wireless 3G modem.. via the USB but Apple have ceased to do adventurous stuff.
    If you give up the TC as main router there are plenty of better products on the market that will handle multiple wan connections.. !!

    There are a number of posts related to copying issues between Windows Vista / 7 and AirPort Disks. Two potential solutions being forwarded are: 1) Changing the LAN Manager authentication level, and/or 2) Disabling the Windows Search feature.
     To change the LAN Manager authentication level:
    From the Windows Vista / 7 desktop, click Start
    Search for: security
    Click 'Local Security Policy'
    Goto Local Policies > Security Options
    Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level'
    Change level to: Send LM & NTLM responses
    Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients'
    De-select 'Require 128-bit encryption'
    Click OK
     To disable Windows Search:
    Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
    On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
    Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
    Press OK, close all windows and restart.
     A third "solution," that has worked for me, is verify that both the AirPort base station and the Win7 PC are using the exact same Workgroup Name. In my case, I use "WORKGROUP" (without the quote marks) for this name. From the AirPort Utility, you would enter this value on the Disks > File Sharing tab. On Win7, Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Change Settings > Change > Workgroup

  • Cannot load webpages. Using a PAC file under Airport Proxies?

    Hi,
    so I got home today from work and now I can only load certain webpages. I can load the apple homepage, and google, and also google search results will appear, but if i click on any of them, or try to enter another website Safari will say 'cannot find server'. I have compared my Airport settings with my brother's Macbook, also running on the same home wireless network, and the big difference is that whereas his 'Configure Proxies' setting under the 'Proxies' tab in Airport is set to 'Manually', mine is set to 'Using a PAC file'.
    Of course I have tried to fix this problem by setting mine to 'Manually' as well, but even if i click 'OK' and "Apply', it seems to instantly revert.
    In the meantime, skype is working, as is my RSS reader. Please can somebody give me some ideas as to what could be going wrong?

    Alternatively I set the router not to make its own connection and then make the PPPoE connection from the mac.
    That is not the best way to use a router. It is better to use the router to make the connection and then let your mac and pc just get an ip from the router using dhcp.
    Set your router to use alternative dns servers if your still having issues such as opendns.com

  • One computer can use the network while another can't even see it?

    Hello helpful people...
    I have a MacBook Pro (original release) and my roommate has an iBookG4. I have had a two-airport network system for years and never had a single issue with connectivity. About 2 months ago, my roommate's iBook started having trouble finding not only our network, but any network... now three shipments to Apple later, they have changed the airport card twice, the logic board, the RAM, etc. All other aspects of the computer seem to be working fine now, except that when I click on the airport icon at the top of the screen, it pulls up no networks. On my MacBook (sitting side by side with the iBook), I usually hit about 10 networks in my condo. Naturally, this would mean that there must still be something wrong with the airport card... but wait... it gets better.
    When I take the iBook to the Apple Store... it works PERFECTLY. And I feel stupid. What the ****? Do any of you have any clue as to what is going on?
    More specifically, if I type in the name of my network so that it can try to join. It keeps telling me that the password is invalid (and trust me... it's the right one). Also, if I EVER get it to connect to the network (it's hit or miss), it will self-assign an IP address and will never hit the internet. All of this is happening as I use my MacBook Pro on the same network and type this. I am so frustrated (as is my roommate).
    Any ideas would be much appreciated.

    Yes, you can do this. The registration doesn't have to be done on the same system the iPhone is going to be used with.

  • Mail.app and Airport home network

    I have DSL connected from modem to Ethernet on my iMac desktop, and I share its Internet connection using the built-in Airport with Personal Web Sharing activated. I can use the Internet connection flawlessly by connecting my MacBook to the iMac home network. However, I can't receive or send e-mail with the Mac OS X Mail.app using the network connection. If I plug in the Ethernet cable from the modem directly to the MacBook, I have no problem with e-mail.
    Is this situation normal? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

    I believe you must go to System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall on the computer that shares its Internet connection and enable the ports needed by Mail by clicking on the New button, choosing Other from the Port Name popup menu (so that you can name that setting however you wish), and specifying the port number(s) there.
    Also, go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list on each computer.

  • WHo uses my network?

    I found a Mac address that I cannot trace to one of my wireless devices that is connected to my network. It could be my TP linkpower network adapter, but I don't know how I can find out.
    In the past I could use Airport extreme utility to find wireless clienst in manual setup mode. But since airport utility was updated I no longer have that option. In other words I no longer can control who uses my network.
    Can someone please tell me how I can use airport utility 7.6.1 to find out and to control who is using my network?

    Looks like everything is all mine. One thing I noticed is that apu5.6 gives MAC addresses for currently wireless connected devices, right? How can I see what IPs are connected? apu6.0 gives me one IP address, but I would expect at least 3: one for my NAS, one for my TP-Link power adapter, and one for my ADSL Modem.
    Any idea how that works?
    As a side question (and maybe I should post this as a new question...): I'm in China, and recently they upgraded the apartment block to 10GB infrastructure (glass fiber). They gave me a new modem (China Telecom) and now I got problems that almost every day I have to reset the modem (not the AEBS!) because my mobile devices (phone, ipad, ipod, android tablets, etc) cannot connect to the internet anymore. Sometimes the iPad can connect, but I cannot run my Webex app on my ipad (meaning I cannot connect to the meeting, which is resolved by resetting the modem). My iMac always remains connected via wifi. I suspect it is related to my devices being away during the day, and something in my system (the modem?) refreshes something, and as a result any devices that are not on my network, are not allowed to use the internet until I reset the modem. ANy idea what's up with that?

    I apologise in advance if this is the wrong section to be posting this question, but I am very new to Mac's and I am not even 100% sure which part of the whole setup is the modem!!!
    I have a shiny new iMac which is running through a Time Capsule wirelessly, both working fantastically, along with a netbook PC, AND the wireless printer, but I just want to make sure we are the only ones using my network. I have password protected it and made it secure.... I think, but would be happy to be able to visually identify who is actually surfing my net

    Welcome to the discussions forum Blundery.
    If you've password protected your wireless network, the only people who can use it are those who know the password, so rest easy. Use WPA or WPA2, since the older WEP encryption is no longer considered secure - hackers can determine your WEP passwords given a little time and effort.
    If you're still paranoid, read on:
    The easiest way to determine what equipment is piggybacking on your wireless network is to use Airport Utility. Select your Time Capsule and click on the button "Manual Setup". Then, click on the text "Wireless Clients". This will bring up a chart and table with the MAC (Media Access Control) addresses of any wireless equipment on your network. The MAC addresses are in the table under the heading "Client". MAC addresses look like 64:23:A6:B4:2C:E5 or something (I made that one up). MAC addresses are as unique to their equipment as your fingerprints are to you.
    The MAC addresses will correspond to your iMac, your netbook PC, and your wireless printer, assuming they're actually running at the time. Write those down someplace so you know what they are.
    You can determine your equipment's MAC addresses in various ways. For instance, if you go to your iMac's Apple menu and select "About this Mac", then click "More Info..." then click Network, then click AirPort, scroll down near the bottom and you'll find the MAC address of your iMac. You're on your own finding them for your netbook and printer, but in many cases the MAC addresses are printed on the equipment case, or the box it came in.
    If you can't account for a MAC address you're seeing in the "Client" list, you have a piggybacker. But you protected your network with a good password and WPA or WPA2 security, so there won't be any

    The modem is the box found at the other end of the wire connected to your Time Capsule's WAN port. Depending on how you get your Internet service, the box may or may not be in your home.

  • Migration Assistant - won't find other computer on network

    I have a brand new MacBook Air, and I am trying to use the Migration Assistant to transfer data from my old MacBook Pro via wireless network.
    Both computers don't get any further than "looking for other computers" and they just sit there for ages looking but don't find anything. Both are connected to the same network.
    Any suggestions?

    Rather than connecting "on the same network", use Create Network from the airport menu icon and connect the two notebooks directly and thus get an "N" connection. Ensure that you turn on file sharing, turn off the firewalls on both computers on this singular network you have created. Then you should be able to migrate if you are the "owner" or administrator as set up on both computers. Follow the directions... post back if this does or does not work.

    Is there a way to connect an old Sunflower iMac (OSX 10.4.11) to a new Time Capsule?  It used to work with old Airport Extreme network, run from a intel iMac with updates thru Mavericks but now seems to only allow WEP encryption instead of WPA and can't connect to Time Capsule.  Airport Extreme Base was controllable from either computer up through Snow Leopard (I didn't do any of the Lion upgrades).  Then when I upgraded to Mavericks I lost the ability to use Airport Utility with this hardware on the Sunflower but could still connect wirelessly to network without any problems.  But now with the Time Capsule upgrade the Sunflower is blocked from network by a dialogue that requests ony WEP password, not WPA pwd used by Time Capsule.  Neither can I use the old airport extreme base to extend the time capsule network since I can't input the correct password/encryption approach to join it.  Is there a work around?  Would a newer but old Airport Express be able to extend network to Sunflower?  Or maybe a third party wireless (such as Netgear, Dlink, etc) that has browser type control rather than special utility?
    Another question--before I used MAC addresses to control who could access network.  Now on Time Capsule I don't see anything about this--so is it true now that the only access control is via WPA2 pwd now (which appears to be the encryption pwd and not the time capsule pwd)?

    I can’t claim to completely grasp the issue(s) you’re describing, but the underlying problem is presumably your iMac’s obsolete AirPort card. Whatever the case, an obvious (if not particularly helpful) answer to your stated question would be to connect your iMac with an ethernet cable, using powerline adapters as an alternative if you don’t want to have wire running all over the place.
    My still fully functional clamshell iBook, with an original AirPort card, connects wirelessly to my 4th Generation TC network by means of a cheap 802.11b/g/n USB Wi-Fi adapter. This might be an option for you too.

    When you edit your TC's settings the access controls appear under the Network tab, don't they?
