Finder help menu

I find my finder help menu running too slow. This only happens to the help menu found in the desktop/finder. The help menu doesn't act as slow as long as I open it from any application other than the one for finder.
After a while it "unexpectedly quits".

Hi Bustamante
Do try sleonard's suggestion to repair permissions, but if that doesn't improve things, there is a small procedure outlined in this Apple document:
Mac OS X: Can't access Help content, or content is blank or missing links
If that doesn't work, then have a look at Dr Smokes extensive examination of your help system in this FAQ:
Troubleshooting Help Viewer
I hope one of these provide you with a solution to your lazy Finder.

  • Does Leopard have a FAX? I read the Help menu and....

About the FAX capabilities in Leopard: The Help menu for the FAX says: “Requirements:
    - Mac OS X 10.1.3 or later, including Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar)”
It says JAGUAR. Does this mean that there is no FAX for Leopard? This may sound odd to you, but I have NEVER used a computer FAX and am exploring this possibility since my stand-alone FAX won't work.

This seemed to work for me, up until the point you need a modem that is:
From the 10.5 finder help menu:
You can fax files directly from your computer to any fax machine or computer that’s set up to receive faxes. If your computer has a modem connected to a phone line, it’s automatically configured to send faxes.
    To send a fax:
Choose File > Print, and then choose Fax PDF from the PDF pop-up menu.
Type the fax number in the To field, or click the Address Book button to the right of the To field to select a number.
If you want to paste a number into the To field and the Edit > Paste command isn’t available, hold down the Control key as you click the To field and choose Paste from the menu that appears.
If your phone system requires you to dial a prefix for an outside line, type it in the Dialing Prefix field.
If you want to include a cover page, select “Use Cover page” and enter a subject and message.
Make sure the correct fax device is selected from the Printer pop-up menu.
To change your options, choose the option category from the print options pop-up menu.
For example, to choose your modem’s behavior when faxing, choose Fax Modem. You can choose whether to dial with touch tones or pulse tones, whether to listen to the modem as it dials, and whether to wait for a steady dial tone before dialing.
    Click Fax.
The fax is sent as soon as your modem is available. For example, if you’re using your modem to connect to the Internet, the fax is sent after you disconnect from your Internet service provider.
The top of every page has a header that contains the date and time the fax was sent, a page number, and the fax number of the sender (from Print & Fax Preferences.)
If you include a cover page, it has a heading that contains fax’s recipient (from the To field in the Print dialog), the fax’s sender (the name of the logged-in user), the date and time the fax was sent, the subject line (from the Subject field in the Print dialog), and the number of pages in the fax not including the cover page. The body of the cover page is the Message field in the Print dialog.
If you have a set of options that you frequently use, you can save it as a “preset.” After you set your options, choose Save As from the Presets pop-up menu. To use this set of options when faxing another document, choose its name from the Presets pop-up menu.

iPods (except for iPod touch) are not linked to any iTunes "account."  They are associated with your iTunes library. The account in iTunes is your Apple ID, and that is used to buy and download content from the iTunes Store.  It is not required to use an iPod.
The 1st (and 2nd) gen shuffle can only be used with one iTunes library at a time.  When you connect it, iTunes should prompt you to start using it with your iTunes library, and warn that the shuffle's existing content will be erased.  Have iTunes erase the shuffle, and it will be associated with your iTunes library going forward.  You can then add content to your shuffle.
The need for the previous owner's Apple ID and password should only come up if you are trying to transfer existing content from the shuffle to your iTunes library, AND the previous owner had content purchased from the iTunes Store.  Just cancel out of that step, if iTunes asks.

  • Error when opening Find Examples under the Help menu

Today when I tried opening the Find Examples under the Help menu in LabVIEW 6.1, it would not open correctly. The Find Examples window appears and then an error window appears on top of it with the following description -
"Error 1 occurred at open or create file (function 1)."
Then ther is a list of possible reasons.
I have had this version of LabVIEW installed for over 6 months and had no problems until today. I tried running the installation program for LabVIEW and repairing LabVIEW but had no success.
What should I do next? Is there a file/s I can delete and then install manually?
    Thanks,
    Rodney

I've never actually heard of this error ocurring with the Examples Finder before. If it continues, I would probably just reinstall LabVIEW. That should clear up the problem.

  • "Help" menu in finder is not working correctly

My "Help" menu in the finder menubar is not working correctly. If I type in a query that can't be found, instead of telling that it can't be found, underneath the search field it just displays "Searching..." indefinitely. This is no matter what application I'm in when I access the menu. I have tried the advice in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6389569&#6389569 and that does not work. Using OS 10.5.1

I'd like to add that when I search, it will find menu commands (highlight relevant menu commands) but not return any actual help results. To clarify, this is when searching directly from the "help" menu bar item. Searching from within the help window seems to work fine.

In iTunes you use the Authorize This Computer or De-authorize This Computer option under the Store menu in iTunes' menubar. For Windows use the ALT-S keys to access it. Or turn on Windows 7 and 8 iTunes menus: iTunes- Turning on iTunes menus in Windows 8 and 7.
More On De-authorizing Computers (contributed by user John Galt)
You can de-authorize individual computers, but only by using those computers. The only other option is to "de-authorize all" from your iTunes account.
      1. Open iTunes on a computer
      2. From the Store menu, select "View my Account..."
      3. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
      4. Under "Computer Authorizations" select "De-authorize All".
      5. Authorize each computer you still have, as you may require.
You may only do this once per year.
After you "de-authorize all" your authorized computers, re-authorize each one as required.
If you have de-authorized all computers and need to do it again, but your year has not elapsed, then contact: Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us.

  • Help menu in finder not working

I select Mac Help in the help menu in finder and it tries to open and fails. Does anyone else see this problem? Any fixes?

    Garret,
Although I am not using Leopard, and Troubleshooting Help Viewer, by Dr. Smoke is current for all OS X versions except Leopard, if it was my problem I would experiment with "Reset Help Viewer." Since my reply is pure speculation, experiment at your own risk.

  • "Find Example..." missing from the help menu

    Both the files:
    C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 7.1\help\_exfinder.llb
    C:\Program Files\National Instruments\Shared\Example Finder\1.0\BIN\NIExampleFinder.exe
are in place and functional but the menu item is missing off my v7.1.1 help menu.
Any idea how I can put it back?

I would agree with tst that a repair or uninstall and re-install would be the way to go.  Before you do that though, just make sure that it isn't one of the hidden menu items by clicking on Help twice, or the double arrow at the bottom.  I can't tell you how many times I go looking for Save All and have a moment of panic when I can't find it before I remember those seldom used menu items get hidden.
    Hope this helps!

  • Insert Symbol, finding Pages Help Menu and Set Default Print Size

I'm having a hard time doing the following:
    1. Inserting a vertical line that I used to find in Word by going to Insert > Symbol
    2. Preventing Pages from defaulting to #10 Letter (which I used recently) but seems to be the default size (but not the default Pulldown page type for some weird reason). I guess I'm just not sure how this is all working.
    3. Where do I go for the Program's Help Menu in Mac? I seem to go to the Help Pulldown at the end but when I type in a word I seem to get answers for Mac as a whole and not just for Pages, which is what I want.
    TIA.

On French keyboards, we get it with option + shift + l
It would be a good idea to enter the System's Preferences Pane entitled "Language and Text"
Then trigger the newly installed menu item in the menu bar.

  • Find/search doesn't work in Finder - help!?

I go into finder and I type in a file name to search my computer for. No matter what volume or folder I select, nothing pops up in the search window - no files, no folders, nothing. Finder just sits there. The find command doesn't seem to work. Can anyone help me fix this? I really need to find files on my computer and don't have time to sift through every folder one by one. Thanks!!!

    Hi, Todd —
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I'll assume that you're talking about using Spotlight via the Finder »» Find (⌘-F) command. If I'm wrong about this, please post back to clarify the specifics.
If nothing at all can be found, it's possible that you have inadvertently included your HD (or a significant Volume, your Documents folder, etc.) in the Privacy tab of Spotlight's preferences — which keeps it from being indexed. If the "metadata" associated with a file or folder aren't included in the indexing, they can't be searched and included in results.
To check this, look first in System Preferences »» Spotlight »» Results — are any of the boxes checked? Only those that are will be searched. Are they in the order you'd like to see results reported? Next, look in System Preferences »» Spotlight »» Privacy. Does anything appear in this window? Anything that does will not be indexed, and thus won't be included in a search. If it is the Volume (or folders, etc.) that you want to be searched, select its name and click on to remove it.
Spotlight will then begin to index whatever had been set as "private" — which essentially means "don't search." Note that this may take some time. The Spotlight icon at the far right side of your menu bar will show a tiny "pulsing" dot while indexing is ongoing.
You may want to go to Finder »» Help »» Mac Help, type in "Spotlight find," and hit return. Several useful articles on this subject will appear that will help to explain this. Here is a list of corresponding Apple "Help" articles online.
    Does this help?
Please post back to share your progress, and discuss other possibilities, as appropriate...
    Regards,
    Dean

    Hi!
I was trying to learn how to use Automator, in the web page
    http://www.macosxautomation.com/automator/examples/ex03/index.html
and I realize that I can't access in Finder Contextual Menu the sub-menu named More for choose Automator > Create Workflow... from the sub-menu.
Someone can help me to configure the finder in order to

That page is out of date since it doesn't reflect the change in Snow Leopard that did away with the More contextual menu. Try this. System Preferences->Keyboard->Keyboard Shortcuts->Services->Development->enable Create Workflow. Close the prefPane, select the object, CONTROL-click->Services->Create Workflow.
If that solves your issue, then send a message to the page's developer and ask them to update it.
