Finder preferences sidebar

Under Devices, I see Computer, Hard Disks, etc.
I notice that the Hard Disk has a slash (not a checkmark) and is collored blue. I thought this was a checkmark or no checkmark area.

no. if you check that box and then drag one (or more) hard drive off the sidebar you'll get a minus sign in that box.

  • Finder - Preferences Sidebar checkbox bug in OSX 10.9

In Finder - Preferences > Sidebar in the latest OSX 10.9 on a Macbook Air 2011, none of the checkboxes are showing checked or staying checked after Itry to hide or show different favourites and places.
Is anyone else having this problem or is it only on my Macbook Air? or does anyone one know how to fix it?

The Finder preferences may be corrupted ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.finder.plist file to the Trash

  • Weird behaviour in Finder Preferences

I have just set up my brand new 27"iMac and i was in Finder Preferences setting up the items I wanted in the Sidebar.
I clicked on the various items I wanted in the Sidbar Preferences list but after clicking and ticking them I noticed that  the ticks then disappeared. Relaunching Finder did show the desired items were now in the sidebar so my choices were picked up. However I examined the Sidebar preferences again and found no items were ticked. Clicking on an item which was in the Sidebar again briefly showed a tick which disappeared and then on relaunching Finder that item had been removed as desired.
Obviously my choices are being dealt with correctly but the Sidebar Preference list shows nothing ticked.
    I find this very weird.
Has anyone any explanations or is this "normal" Mavericks behaviour?

Finder preferences can become corrupted. It's not an unusual.
    Try this..
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.finder.plist file to the Trash
Then go to Finder > Preferences > Sidebar and try again.

  • The favorites disapeared from finder's sidebar. The checkboxes on preferences do put them back won't work

The favorites list disapeared from finder's sidebar. The checkboxes on preferences to put them back won't work. What should I do to have them back?

Nope... the word "Favorites" doesn't even appear on the sidebar. As I mentioned, I went to <preferences><sidebar> and all the favorites are unchecked. I tryed to check them but it looks like the checkboxes are disabled.

  • Finder Preferences for Sidebar will not allow me to select any Favorites

Finder has been closing and restarting unexpectedly. Just repaired disk permissions using Disk Utility and now Finder Preferences won't allow me to set any Sidebar Preferences for Favorites i.e. Applications, Documents, etc. Any suggestions?

Try using a different browser. If it works, then the problem is most likely Safari. If the other browser doesn't work, perhaps it is the web site.

  • Finder preferences: How do I just DBL click folder to get a new window

I don't want to have to push cmd and click folders Every time I want a folder to open in a new window. I want a New Window EVERY time I dbl click a folder, as I have done for as long as I can remember in Mac system. I like multiple open windows, and don't like being Forced into having to take extra steps every time just to do this task I do Hundreds of times a day.
Thanks for any help, which these Help screens were Not.
Open a folder in a new tab or window
When you open a folder in a Finder window, the folder’s contents usually replace the current contents of the window. If you prefer, you can open a folder in a new tab or window.
To open a specific folder, press the Command (⌘) key while you double-click the folder. The folder opens in a new tab or window, depending on your Finder preferences. To change the preference, choose Finder > Preferences, click General, then select or deselect “⌘-double-click opens a folder in a new tab.” (Deselect the option if you prefer a new window.)
To open a new Finder window without opening a specific folder, choose File > New Finder Window or press Command (⌘)–N.
If a Finder window’s toolbar and sidebar are hidden, then double-clicking a folder in the window (without pressing the Command key) opens the folder in a new window.

Helgason: Thank you so much for this solution. I have been using it since March. But I just upgraded to Yosemite. And as you have noted on your website, it breaks the functionality of typing Command-Shift-A to go to Applications and such. Now that Yosemite has officially been released, are you going to create an update?
Also, an update that returns the green button to being maximize instead of full screen (without having to hold down Option) would also be welcome!

  • Folder in Finder's Sidebar that I can't remove/delete?

I have tried go to Preferences-->Sidebar in Finder and deselect everything but the folder remains in my sidebar.  I am unable to select/highlight the folder in Sidebar.  I have tried to drag the folder into the trash or to my desktop, but nothing happened.  I just remains in Sidebar.  I have also tried to locate the folder anywhere on my computer/HD, but it's nowhere to be found.  Any advice?

LOL!  I just found out how to delete it.  Another discussion here said I should press option and command and then drag it to desktop to make it disapear into a puff of smoke.

  • Finder window sidebar font size

    W.W.,
Finder>Preferences...>General>Sidebar icon size: (Choose)...but it also changes the icon size, and it also applies to other applications such as Mail.

  • Weird name under the "Shared" of the Finder's sidebar

I have a macbook pro which is just upgraded to Lion.
It was going fine but few hours ago, a weird name that I don't know showed up under the 'Shared" of my Finder's sidebar. When I cliked it, it said "Connection failed" and disappeared. Now there is no "Shared" in the sidebar at all.
So first of all, what is this "Shared"?
And if there is another computer under "Shared", does it mean that computer can see what I'm doing or something?
Also, since it said it failed to connect, that computer wasn't connected to mine, right?
    Am I being hacked????????????
Thank you, I'm just a bit concerned with this... odd predicament that I never encountered to during my macbook experience.

So this unknown is using my network because of my insecure wireless router, but it's not like that device can look into my account?
Yes, that's a possibility.  If your wireless network does not have a password, that's the most obvious explanation.  I live in a suburban area, houses close but not too close, and I can see up to four of my neighbors' networks, depending on the day and what part of the house I'm in.  The ones that are open, I could join if I chose to.  In an apartment building, you're going to have many more people close to you, while if you live out on a farm somewhere, you probably have nobody living in range.  In any situation where you have people living (or commonly travelling) nearby, you should lock down your network with a password.
And no, that device can't hack your computer unless you have a service open in System Preferences -> Sharing.  You won't by default.  Of course, an untrusted person on your network could potentially view all your network traffic, which could be a problem.  All the more reason to lock down the network.

  • Mac OS Lion::Finder left sidebar...

I realise that, after removing the 'Data Center' shortcut from favorites sidebar, it reappears on every system startup. It seems to me that is a bug...

    Rebuild the Finder's plist file
    1. In the finder, hold down the option key and select Go/Library
    2. In the library folder open the preferences folder
    3. Move com.apple.finder.plist to the desktop
    4. Select Apple menu/Force Quit from the menubar
    5. Click Finder/Relaunch button
com.apple.finder.plist will be automatically rebuilt.  You may have to reset any Finder preferences that you changed.  The Data Center favorite should be history.  If not, try to remove it.
You can then trash the com.apple.finder.plist icon on your desktop
    Good luck.

  • HT5839 Need more colors for tags than the 7 colors in Finder Preferences

Is there a way to  get more colors than the 7 colors now standard in Finder? I have nearly 12 categories and I would each to have a distinctive color.
There could be more than one shade of each color, for example.
    Thank you

You can't select a color at all in the File Save/Get Info dialog. You have to set them in the Finder Preferences as I showed above. You can choose from the list of already defined Tags, or you can type in a new one.
If you want that new tag to have a color associated with it, go to Finder Preferences and select the color like I displayed (and you also did).
Here is a link to lots of You Tube videos on using Tags. I looked at the first one from iMore and she demonstrated one way to change the color of a Tag by using the Sidebar. You can also change it in the Finder Tags Preferences as I've already stated.

  • Yosemite no finder preferences

I have just installed the Yosemite upgrade on both my iMacs. One is working fine. However the Finder preferences box on the iMac 3.5 GHy Intel Core 7 is now blank. The General. Tags, Sidebar and advanced are all missing. Have I deleted something by mistake? I tried reloading the upgrade but the same thing happens.
I don't think I need the functionality immediately, but it would be good to get it fixed.
However I also have lost the small window that shows the status of finder copying files. It does copy the file and there is a sound when the action is complete. But there is no widow showing progress or showing when there is a duplicate file etc...
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Jason
Thank you ever so much. Yes you solved my problem. Firstly creating a new user made everything work OK. Then I realised from what you said that there was a rogue app causing a clash...and that the app had to be something  connected with Finder......So I went back to my originasl log-in deleted one app called thumb creator, or something like that, and all is fine again.
I am so relieved and happy
    Thank you

  • How do I find Preferences on Itunes?

I am trying to Convert MP3 or M4a from Itunes to planning Center.  The directions I have say to go to preeences but I can't find preferences on the most recent Itunes.  Please help!

The main differences between iTunes 11 and earlier versions are the loss of coverflow and ability to have multiple windows open.
In Windows, you can restore much of the look & feel of iTunes 10.7 with these shortcuts:
ALT to temporarily display the menu bar
CTRL+B to show or hide the menu bar - allowing you to access Edit > Preferences
CTRL+S to show or hide the sidebar
CTRL+/ to show or hide the status bar (won't hide for me on Win XP)
Click the magnifying glass top right and untick Search Entire Library to restore the old search behaviour
Use View > Hide <Media Kind> in the cloud or Edit > Preferences > Store and untick Show iTunes in the cloud purchases to hide the cloud items. The second method eliminates the cloud status column (and may let iTunes start up more quickly)
If you don't like having different coloured background & text in the Album (Grid) view use Edit > Preferences > General and untick Use custom colours for open albums, movies, etc.
With iTunes 11.0.3 and later you can enable artwork in the Songs view from View > Show View Options (CTRL+J) making it more like the old Album List view
View > Show View Options (CTRL+J) also contains options to change the sorting of grid based views

  • Finder  preferences do what they wanted; plist eliminated also, no help

My finder is not working correctly. I have used preferences...made changes and then, they change back to what they were originally. I want to see in the left panel my files and connections.
*Problem 1*: I want to see my hard drives connected and view in the left finder pane so..... I fix preferences. it works. Then it works maybe a day. The next day, it is no longer selected in preferences.I did not change anything.
*Problem 2*: I can not slide over folders I want to be in the left finder pane. I used to be able to. It just stopped. No new software added.
I have deleted the plist as I have read others do in this discussion- that DOES NOT work.
    Any help appreciated- Thanks

How are you "fixing" the preferences? Via Finder Menu->Preferences->Sidebar?
*Problem 2*: I can not slide over folders I want to be in the left finder pane. I used to be able to. It just stopped. No new software added.
I'm confused on what you mean by "slide over folders". Do you mean you can't add folders to the "Places" section of the sidebar?
I have deleted the plist as I have read others do in this discussion- that DOES NOT work.
Which plist did you delete? Did you logout/login or restart or force quit the Finder? Force quitting the Finder is the proper method after deleting com.apple.finder.plist. If you deleted com.apple.sidebarlists.plist, you need to restart.

  • How do I fix finder preferences?

I just downloaded moutain lion and now finder does not have "home" in the sidebar.  I tried to go to the finder preferences and put "home" on the sidebar, but whenever I checkmark the little box it automatically unchecks itself.
Does anyone have any idea on what is going on?

Back up all data, then boot into Recovery (command-R at startup), launch Disk Utility, select the startup volume, and run Repair Disk (not Repair Permissions.) If any problems are found, repeat. Then reboot as usual.
