Finger Friendly

With the advent of Windows 8 tablets, (Specifically, the smaller 8" screened iterations) Wouldn't it be prudent to update Digital Editions to make it more finger friendly? e.g: getting rid of the tiny "next" and "previous" page buttons at the bottom and make the app turn pages by the swipe of a finger or by holding the finger on the screen and dragging up or down to scroll thru the pages? This one change would make this the perfect epub reader for so many who use epub books to study and highlight and annotate (already available in this app).
You could set it to where the select text feature is available after holding the finger on the screen for a determined length of time (not a long time, mind you, maybe 1-1.5 seconds) or perhaps by tapping or even double-tapping a word and expanding the select window with draggable bars (like what is on so many phones).
I tell you, this would make this the perfect epub app.
I want to start a petition to have this feature added. I think it's that important.

  • [AS3 AIR] 2880x2880 Size Limit, Camera, Filter, CameraRoll Issues & Finger Friendly Components

    AS3 AIR ANDROID
    I started playing with this Adobe AIR for Adroid by building an app that would let the user take a picture using the mobile device's native camera app.  Then, I'm applying filter effects to make the image look cool.  Then, I'm allowing the user to save the image back to the camera roll.
    Here are some questions that I have:
    KEEPING UP WITH CURRENT TECHNOLOGY
    Are we limited to the 2880x2880 stage size limit?  Although, this dimension does yield 8+megapixels, it's not in the ratio that most camera sensors are built (widescreen).  Plus, you can bet that newer cameras will have even higher dimensions.  Will this be updated to keep up with current technology requirements?
    IMPORTING & MANIPULATING CAMERA DATA
    Code
    var bmpData:BitmapData = new BitmapData($loader.width, $loader.height);
    bmpData.draw(DisplayObject($loader));
    bmp = new Bitmap(bmpData);
    bmp.width = Capabilities.screenResolutionX;
    bmp.height = Capabilities.screenResolutionY;
    if (CameraRoll.supportsAddBitmapData) {
        var cameraRoll:CameraRoll = new CameraRoll();
        cameraRoll.addEventListener(ErrorEvent.ERROR, onCrError);
        cameraRoll.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onCrComplete);
        var savedBmpData:BitmapData = new BitmapData (bmp.width, bmp.height);
        savedBmpData.draw(DisplayObject(bmp));
        cameraRoll.addBitmapData(savedBmpData);
    } else {
        trace("~" + "Camera Roll not supported for this device.");
    addChild(bmp);
    When you capture an image using the mobile device's camera app, you have to use the Loader object.
    So, here, I am doing just that with these steps:
    First, I'm creating a BitmapData object and sizing it the same as the camera image.
    Pass the camera image into the BitmapData object.
    Create a Bitmap object and pass in the BitmapData.
    Resize it to fit on the stage.
    Check for Camera Roll and then create a savedBmpData BitmapData object at the size of the screen.
    Pass in the bmp.
    Save it to the Camera Roll.
    The problem is that when the image is displayed on the phone, it shows THE ENTIRE (uncropped) image.  However, the image that is saved to the phone is only the top 800x480 corner of the image.  What is wrong?  How do we save an image to the Camera Roll that is larger than the display area of the phone.  It seems like the only way to save the entire camera image is to resize it to fit the stage and then capture the stage into a bitmapData object.
    FILTERS
    If you apply any filters to the bitmapData object, the filter effects will display on the phone, but if the image is saved to the Camera Roll, then all the filters are lost and it only saves the original (unfiltered) image.
    FINGER FRIENDLY UI COMPONENTS
    Do they exist?
    ADDITIONAL NOTES
    The max image size that can be saved is 2039x2039 pixels on the HTC Evo.  Anything bigger than this resulted in a CameraRoll Error #1 (which there is no documentation for what that means ANYWHERE on the web).

  • [solved] XFCE - Help customizing for touchscreen / finger friendly UI

    Now that I've managed to get the touchscreen installed and working on my daughter's xmas gift I need some help with making it a bit more finger friendly.
    1) I'm looking either for a theme (or just a setting somewhere) to make the window/title bar larger.  She needs to be able to close windows easily.
    2) I'm using wbar and can't get the settings to stick.  I've increased the icon size (both manually and with the gui from AUR) but when I reboot it never seems to stick.
    3) Is there a setting somewhere to make all programs open full screen?
    Thanks all.
    **edit: I've got it figured out.
    1) I just went to the .gtkrc file of my theme and changed the settings of the following lines:  GtkRange::slider_width & GtkRange::stepper_size  (both are 30 now)
    2) You have to start wbar with a command to change the default icon size
    3) devilspie will work, thanks for the heads up.

  • I can't get my windows 8.1 tablet to run a tablet friendly version of firefox. Does one exist?

    I have bought an asus transformer book t100 and set mozilla firefox as the default browser but when used without the external keyboard the tabs and close buttons are too small for my fingers. I assumed there would be a tablet version similar to that on my smart phone but I can't seem to find/activate this if it exists. some comparison websites seem to have reviewed the big browser companies and review firefox for tablets using a touch/metro version but when I downloaded the most recent beta version i still cant find how to switch modes.

    It's possible that someone has created an add-on to tweak the interface of regular "desktop" Firefox to be more finger-friendly. Or you could consider one of the extensions that lists your tabs vertically in a sidebar where they might be a bigger target.

  • N97 or N97 mini?

    Im planing to buy a phone but dont know which to choose. As i know, the functions for both n97 n n97 mini is actually same. The different between them is the size, keyboard and fm transmitter i think. Any one can suggest which one i worth to buy? Im interested in n97 mini because of the improvement on the keyboard design but it took off the fm transmitter. Any one can suggest me? Thanks..

    I am very happy with my N97 and prefer it to N97 mini, a work colleague just got one (Vodafone sent it as a substitute for N97 he had ordered) I helped him set it up, and found the smaller onscreen keypad less 'fat finger' friendly, and obviously, if media is a priority then the extra storage and bigger screen are favourable. I know there are many bad reports on N97, but you tend to find people go to forums with problems and complaints, not to praise phones. That's not to say there are no problems with the phone, but you will find problems on any forum for any make or model. I've been very lucky with my handset, I've spent many hours using it, adding apps, music, films etc and it is by far THE BEST PHONE I'VE EVER HAD !
    Nokia tend to improve phones with software updates (N95 8Gig got better and better) and the N97 is already much better with V2.0. You pays your money and makes your choice, if you want minimal problems, get a really simple basic handset, if you want a really clever and entertaining smartphone I love my N97. Iphone aint perfect, omnia isn't and new sony ericcson has its faults, but the more complex a machine the more chance of problems !
    Hope you enjoy whatever you choose.

  • What do I need to learn to make a responsive website?

    Hiya
    Haven't checked in here for a few years.
    15 years ago or thereabouts, I learned HTML4  (from Castro's book) and hand-coded a website. I managed to create one CSS page.   Whoopee!
    Then I got DW4, and later an update. and that was SWELL.  And there's my level.  I'm not cutting edge, am I?
    These days I maintain a site for some friends, and they'd like to upgrade it.  Half an hour on Google learns me the term "responsive."  Looks like y'gotta be good w/CSS, and be doing HTML5.
    First question, is there a DW update, or any other WYSIWYG program that will convert an existing site into Responsive, or build one more-or-less the way DW does the HTML4 ones?
    Second question, if there isn't, what's the list of things I'd have to learn to reboot myself?  And any suggestion as to where/how?  Remembering what my level is....?
    Thanks
    denno

    Responsive Web Design (RWD) has some limitations.  Honestly, some web designers just can't do it because they're not willing to abandon old-school tables and/or compromise on their design ideas.  But if you approach this with an open mind and don't try to build anything too fancy or restrictive, RWD can be very rewarding.
    Always consider your mobile users first.  They interact with their devices differently than desktop users.  For example, mobile users need less content and bigger, finger-friendly menus, buttons and forms.  There are volumes written about this subject on the web.  Spend some time learning the theory as well as the code before you dive in to your first RWD project.

  • Controls on tablets

    I've successfully ported a Labview application onto a windows based tablet, but the biggest issue I'm facing is the size of the controls on the UI. Some, like buttons are no issue, but others, like numerical edit controls, are. I can make the font bigger (not really the issue), but i can't seem to change the size of the increment/decrement control to the left. As is, it is too small to be operated with a finger. Drop down boxes and lists can also be a pain. Is there a way to make these bigger so they are more tablet(finger) friendly?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Good suggestions and the little wrench solved the immediate issue (more or less). It would be nice to have tools to help with the tablet transition. I designed my app on a laptop (as I suspect many would do) and then copied it to the tablet. I thought I had taken into consideration the tablets smaller screen size, but obviously there were some issues there. The biggest is the concept that there is no mouse, so you have to make controls big enough that they can be readily used by big fingers. It would be handy to have an app that showed you how things would look on your standard tablet screen. I was going to Windows 7 and I suspect that some of these things will change with Windows 8 tablets, How will labview deal with swiping and other standard tablet motions as opposed to mouse operations? Having to go to custom controls for all your tablet controls does not seem like a great way forward. Anyway, I'm off to browse through the WIndows 8 stuff. Thanks again for your comments above.

  • Good bye

    I had the pleasure (and pain) to use the z10 for a few days.
    But because of two absolutely no-goes I changed to another device.
    1. No-Go:
    I have to communicate via text-messaging (sms) with customers and need very basic functionality like word-wrapping. Not possible on z10. Input-Field too small and a stupidly placed send-button.
    2. No-Go:
    When the device is secured with an only number-pin there is no possibility to get a num-pad instead of the hole keyboard to unlock. Not user and finger-friendly. So I never secured the device.
    All the other bugs (Problems connecting to AccessPoints, not properly working Notifications and so on) would have been tolerable for me until they would have been fixed, because...
    ... I WILL MISS the great User-Interface and the Hub - brilliant work and gets my biggest respect. A completely new experience. Compared to the awful UIs of iOS or Android it was an enjoyable time for me with the z10.
    The most beautiful piece of hardware, replaceable Battery, good Screen and a simple but great music-player with the possibility to skip via Volume-Keys (Best thing to have while driving).
    Thanks to all here in forum for the tipps you gave me regarding my requests.
    I hope blackberry would get more involved to your requests and will give up their non-presence here.
    Have a good time
    Many Regards
    Chris

    In relation to #1 he is actually complaining about the lack of carriage returns, not auto-wrap.
    That is something that I think we all want, but certainly not enough of a reason for me to return the phone, simply too much other great stuff.

  • X6 setting default messaging application

    Hey,
     I am a brand new X6 user, I am not event very familiar with Symbian S60 OS. I recently purchased the application known as ThreadedSMS because I like to see my text messages threaded as in conversation form. After I installed it, the original messaging application still pops up notifications in addition to ThreadedSMS. Also when I click on a contact and wish to send a text message, it uses the original messaging application instead of Threaded SMS.
    Is there a way to set the OS's default messaging application to be Threaded SMS so that I don't get double the notifications of incoming text messages, and so when I try to send a text message via contacts it doesnt pull up the original SMS application.
    Also, does anyone know a more finger friendly Contact Manager application (similar to iPhone ) ??
    Thanks,
    JKDManoj

    Hi, you can't change the default messaging app, and for managing contacts Ovi suite is the easiest way ! Sync at least once per week

  • Openbox Theming Questions - ( titlebar button size)

    I'm trying to tweak an openbox theme that is finger friendly for my daughter's touchscreen and I've run into a question:
    I know we can change the image of the .xdm for the titlebar buttons but can we change the size so that it fits a taller titlebar?
    I can't see anything in the .themerc, obconf, or obtheme to do so but I hope I'm just missing it somewhere.  It seems weird that I can easily increase the size of the titlebar but not the buttons.
    Thanks.

    I have solved moving a window by dragging the title bar with the following openbox configuration, which is located in ~/.config/openbox/lxde-rc.xml on my machine:
    <context name="Titlebar">
    <mousebind button="Left" action="Drag">
    <action name="if">
    <maximized>yes</maximized>
    <then>
    <action name="Unmaximize"/>
    <action name="MoveResizeTo">
    <y>0</y>
    </action>
    </then>
    </action>
    <action name="Move"/>
    </mousebind>
    <mousebind button="Left" action="DoubleClick">
    <action name="ToggleMaximizeFull"/>
    </mousebind>
    </context>
    After holding down the left mouse button on the title bar and moving the mouse, the window is unmaximized and moved to the top of the desktop with the actions Unmaximize and MoveResizeTo. Unmaximizing and moving to the top is only done, if the window is maximized. Then in each case the action Move starts the modus for moving the window with the mouse. This configuration simulates nearly the same behavior as in Windows 7 while dragged the title bar with the left mouse button.
    After a left double click on the title bar, the action ToggleMaximizeFull switches the window state once between maximized and unmaximized.

  • 5800 case and screen protector

    I bought my 5800 a week ago to use as a music/media device in addition to my n85. The 5800 came wit a nokia branded caseand the 5800 has a thinly striped screen protector on it. I have found that i can listen to my music whilst the phone is in the case without it affecting or muffling the sound. Great construction/invention there nokia.  The screen protector does have a cut-out for the sensor and the front camera usage.  Funnily enough i cannot actually feel the lines on the screen protector via my finger but i can if i use my nail or any of the provided stylus. Anyways, i digress. Can i keep this protector on the phone or will the ridges that are within the screen protector affect my phone's screen ie making scratches on the screen via my use either by the back of my nail or the stylus' and does anyone else have the problem i do that the screen doesnt seen particularly finger friendly to my touch, it likes to sit their looking at me or is it a case of my touch being too light? And is it easier to use for the majority of you with the tactile vibrate on or off? I have it on at the moment as i cant recognise whether  my touch has actually been recognised or not and lastly does anyone know if there is any rhyme or reason that would tell me when a menu or option requires two clicks or one. Its driving me mad. I wish it were all one way or all the other way.  I am running v20 by the way and looking forward to a version that has a faster ui recognition of my touch.  Many thanks.

  • Nokia N8 / Symbian^3 not up to the job compared to...

    I purchased Nokia N8 couple of weeks ago. Expectring that it will be really good and transformed ways of doing things however it is very disappointing that it is still lacking so many features and things which makes it easy to use compared to iOS/Android.
    1) Many Apps for iOS / Android which are also Free. Long list of apps which is not same for Ovi Store.
    2) Other than Typical UI elements, which are typical of Nokia, Nothing different in UI elements.
    3) Symbian^3 still ways behind other OS in market. Slow in response and lag in the Apps.
    4) Still no One touch menu access like iOS and Androids. Have to touch/tap many many times in the menus to get the job done like Messaging, Texting etc.
    5) Camera still have high Noise level however images are good quality.
    6) Games load slow. e.g NFS, Pro Golf still gets stuck in response many times.
    7) Good part is Symbian^3 is more finger friendly than other Touch screen Nokia Devices on Old Symbian Platform.
    8) Widgets, Shortcuts , Customisation home screens are really good features but have limitations.
    9) Connectivity still requires lots of improvements. Each app decides it's own way of connecting. Not like iOS/ANdroid. where if you are connected or known Wi-Fi Available it will only attempt to connect that connection. Some apps, Browser decides automatically to pick up mobile data over Wi-Fi etc.
    Bluetooth is no good either. any Bluetooth headphones you use with this including NOkia's own, Not giving consistent connection and while listening music etc. it keeps breaking up the sound.
    10) Texting , if you select "Save Sent items" NO. It still keeps saving them many times.
    11) No Straight forward one tap menus in Messaging / Calling where you select your contact and you can straight make Call /Text. Or when you Type Text, unlike other OS like Blackberry OS, iOS, Android you have to tap many times to reach desired contact/function.
    12) Camera quality , HDMI, USB on the GO are really good features
    13) Honestly Symbian OS still requires lot work which will make it very light weight OS and gives you Fast/Smooth interaction with OS/UI.
    Keep up the good work Nokia.
    Thanks.

    I hope Nokia stick with the Symbian 3 what they are using in my Nokia N8.  I don't want my phone to be out of date after a few months with newer phones using different Symbian versions.
    I hope they just update this version so I can use mine for many years. If they go for a newer version, then there won't be much support for the people that bought these phones, and that would be terrible.
    I had the Nokia N82 before this phone and it was great because there were many phones out using the same Symbian platform. That mean there were heaps of APPS and GAMES around for the life of my phone which was about 3 years.
    I really hope Nokia just UPDATE this version of Symbian instead of bringing anohter new one out, otherwise I would be very dissapointed as I just purchsed my phone a few days ago.
    If they do do this, I think I will be going to a more stable company that use the same stuff and is very popular like Iphone. I bought this phone because of the camera and features, plese don't let me regret the decision nokia.

  • Is it possible to move or swap channels?

    My elderly father has trouble pressing the channel buttons especially when 3 digits are involved, he just can't do it quick enough, and I fear that he won't manage when the new BT Sports channels come in (which I understand will be channels 943 and 944 ?). Is there any way I can move these channels or indeed any other channels to a lower number? It sounds simple but I can't find anything on how to so it!

Is there any way I can move these channels or indeed any other channels to a lower number? It sounds simple but I can't find anything on how to so it!
    From what we have been told so far the numbers for the BT Sport pack channels are as follows.
    941 - ESPN
    942 - ESPN HD
    943 - BT Sport 1
    944 - BT Sport 2
    945 - BT Sport 1 HD
    946 - BT Sport 2 HD
    or if using a viewing card
    41 - BT Sport 1
    42 - BT Sport 2
    However, today I got a message on my Vision+ box saying that the channels from 851 - 998 and Sky Sports (currently on 41 and 42) will be moving in July. It doesn't say what the new numbering will be so we will have to wait and see.
    I too find it annoying the the BT box won't let you reorder the channels. Every other Freeview box or TV I have owned allowed me to do this.
    Personally, on the BT Vision+ box first I go into the channels management option (press Guide then Yellow) and hide a large number of the channels. I then just use the channel +/- to scroll through what's left. Alternatively I just press Select to bring up the programme bar and use the Up and Down arrows to choose a channel and then Select to select it. On the newest version of the software Info then Up/Down/Select works in a similar manner and there is no pressure that way as it doesn't time out after a few seconds. Again only the smaller number of channels that I haven't hidden are shown when using Up/Down in this way. I never type in actual channel numbers.
    One last point. Do you have the newer bigger remote that has bigger buttons? If not then ask BT for one as it's a bit more finger friendly. See my previous post here.

  • Menu bar wont scale with site correctly, please help!

    Word everyone!  This is my first project dealing with Edge Animate but its rather important that I get it working ASAP and the menu is just the start.  For some reason I cant get the animation to stay inside the bounds of the aside its in and I have tried just about every trick I could find and most do nothing while a few (like the one here -> Are Adobe EVER going to make Edge Animate scale... | Adobe Community) cause the animation to vanish all together.  I am pretty sure that I have everything set correctly from what I learned in class recently, as far as the actual Edge Animation goes, so it may come down to my site's HTML / CSS.  Below you can find a .rar of all the relevant files (I hope) so if anyone has the free time to take a whack at it I would greatly appreciate any help or pointers that might lead me to the right path.
    Thank you for your time!

    I don't use Animate for menus.  I'm just not hard wired to work that way.  I've always used Responsive CSS menus that break into a finger-friendly, stacked menu on smaller viewports.   See this example with the Bootsrap framework:
    Tryit Editor v2.5
    #1 Your Edge Animate composition needs to be built on a responsive stage area.
    #2 When exported, you'll need to put your animation into a properly coded HTML5 document.  Use the W3C validation tools to check your code for errors.
    CSS - http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/
    HTML - http://validator.w3.org/
    Finally, you'll need a bit of JavaScript to control the white space around your responsive composition.
