Finished project, where to keep it

so i have finished my project and now i have GB's worth of the original files on my MBP along with presumably a ton of render files (what even are they and what happens if i delete them)
so my question is, would it be ok to move my original quicktime files (which were used in the project) over to my external HD and if i ever wanted to bring back the project could i just locate them again?
if this is possible, where should i put the actual sequence file?
and do i move, delete or leave be the render files? alsom where are they on my HD
thank you

If you use the Media Manager to copy the files, you'll have the best results I think. Select all the files in your Browser (cmd+a) right click on one, and choose these parameters in Media manager which is selected from the right click menu on any clip.
Copy, Turn OFF delete unused media (to save just what was used in your sequence, select the sequence only in the Browser, and turn on that "delete unused media" option.) Include the render files. And then choose the external drive for the copies. Turn on the new project file option near the bottom of the window. What this does is summerized in the top area of the media manager.
Click OK, and FCP will ask you to name the new project file that will be created... After you've checked out the new project file that will open, delete the original media. Select them all again, but this time choose "Make offline", and delete them from the disk.
Render files are quicktime movies created when you rendered any effects or audio files. Like a title or color correction etc... they replace the original files during playback of sequences, i.e. instead of playing the original files, FCP plays these render files. They will delete all by themselves when they are not found in any sequence in your project, so you get them managed automatically by FCP.
Backup your project file on a CD or DVD... get it off the computer. From it, you could recapture if you lose all the media that came from tape. But you can't recapture things like photshop files or stills ,imported CD files (things not from timecoded tape)... so put them on the DVD too. This DVD backup should also contain the new project file.

  • Are there glitches in iMovie or iDVD that would create problems with viewing a finished project on a standard dvd player?

Everytime I render a new project in iMovie and share it with iDVD to produce a video, there always seems to be glitches in the finished project.  I have gone back and tried to recreate the slideshow, but have not had a whole lot of luck.  I am wondering if I need to delete the iMovie and iDVD applications from the computer???  If I do that will it fix my problem or will I even be able to redownload the programs without having to pay for them again?  I have spent more time and $$$ trying to get a viewable disc to burn and am ready to get rid of the computer altogether.  Hopefully that will not have to happen, but this is a constant issue that I go through everytime I work on a project.  Any suggestions???

    Hi
    Yes and No.
There are Bugs and ways to make better or Worse DVDs - see if this can help.
There are two "Bugs" (or at least one)
    • In iDVD - do not go back to video editing program - if You got Chapters set in Your movie - if You try - then now back in iDVD it will ask You to up-date ==> all Chapters will point to Chapter one. Medicine - create a brand new iDVD Project.
    • There MUST NOT BE any Chapter mark set in very beginning of the Movie - or in any transition or within 2 seconds from them.
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2. Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser ( AND AS MEDIUM - not HD etc as DVD then will suffer in quality ) or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
to get this to work I
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk
    • Use Verbatim DVD-R (absolutely no +/-RW)
    • Set down burn speed to x4 - less burn errors = plays on more devices
    • No other process running in background as - ScreenSaver, EnergySaver OR TIMEMACHINE etc
    • and I'm very careful on what kind of video-codecs, audio file format and photo file formats I use
    • and I consider the iDVD Bug - never go back to video-editor to change/up-date - if so Start  a brand new iDVD project
    • Chapters set as they should - NO one at very beginning and no one in any transition or within 2 sec from it
    • Lay-out - Turn on TV-Safe area and keep everything buttons, titles etc WELL INSIDE not even touching it !
Try to break the process up into two stages
    • Save as a DiskImage (calculating part)
    • Burn from this .img file (burning stage)
To isolate where the problem starts.
Another thing is - Playing it onto a Blu-Ray Player. My PlayStation3 can play BD-disks but not all of my home made DVDs so to get this to work I
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk
    • Use Verbatim DVD-R (absolutely no +/-RW)
    • Set down burn speed to x4 - less burn errors = plays on more devices

    • Lay-out - Turn on TV-Safe area and keep everything buttons, titles etc WELL INSIDE not even touching it !
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show
    • No File Vault on - Important
    • NO - TimeMachine - during iMovie/iDVD work either ! IMPORTANT
    • Lot's of icons on DeaskTop/Finder also slows down the Mac noticeably
    • Start a new User-Account and log into this and iMovie get's faster too - if a project is in a hurry
    • And let Mac run on Mains - not just on battery

  • Storage on finished projects?

I have several Macs (3 G4 and 2 G5). I plan to remove all G4s. I try to look all files I have. Some of projects that we already put on video distrubtion which we finish that project. I am not sure what I should do. Keep project file and capture scratch? It will be big than fit in one DVD-R. Should I put in portable hard drive? or DLT? or ???? Same thing for DVD Studio Pro. I plan to move those unfinished projects in external hard drive until I am ready to work on specific project and will use on my G5. Any suggestions? Thanks

my vote is to keep all of your media where they originally came from. the original tapes(if you are working with tape). these will last a long time. use media manager to consolidate your project and store all your project and source files for every program you used onto a data DVD. SO if you have to revisit a project and make changes, just grab the data off the DVD, open the project file and recapture your data on the original tapes.
I always make a 2 copies onto tape of the finished project one with the completed edit and one without the music track. (in case of a re-edit)
Drives are cheap but they don't last forever.

  • CS3 How to archive finished projects and erase all draft materials without losing final versions.

I have two questions, both related to system management. The first is simple and the second is more complex.
First, I hate that every time I open a Premiere Pro project I have to remember to reset the scratch disc settings because they are carried over from the previous project rather than being project-specific.
Is there a workaround so that the scratch disc settings can be attached to each project so they don’t need to be reset each time one reopens a project?
Second, I presently distribute my work over four (4) 1-TB drives as follows.
Drive D contains my Premiere (prproj and related) files as well as Encore (ncor DVD/BD burn files).
Drive E contains all captured files (transferred from tape).
Drives F and P are scratch drives where all the preview files are stored, both audio and video.
Presently, scratch drives F and P are full, project drive D is nearly full, and I am finished editing the projects which occupy these drives. Drive E, however, still has plenty of unused space.
What I want to do now is to archive the finished projects, along with associated preview files, source clips, and burn files on the E drive, which has plenty of free space remaining. Then I want to delete the project and associated assets from Drive D and erase both scratch drives F & P so that I can reuse those drives for new work.
To do that I have tried using the Project Manager to “collect files and copy to new location” to collect and copy each project to its own folder on the E drive.
The problem is that, having done that, and removed the preview files and project files from their original locations, when attempting to open the now relocated projects from their new locations, the relocated projects continue to look for the associated preview files in the old location (drive F or P), even though all the files associated with each relocated project now reside on the same drive in the same folder. It appears that the Project Manager does not associate the preview files and source clips that it relocates with the project files that it relocates.
Can someone explain this and how best to accomplish my goal of relocating and archiving finished projects along with their associated previews and source materials so that the originals can safely be deleted?
    Thanks.

Is there a workaround so that the scratch disc settings can be attached to each project so they don’t need to be reset each time one reopens a project?
Yes.  Upgrade to CS5.5.  (This feature first showed up in CS4.)
What I want to do now is to archive the finished projects
You can safely delete everything on the F and P drives.  Previews can simply be rebuilt.  No need to waste space trying to save them.
Save the project files on the D drive.  Delete the media on E (you can always recapture if you need to rebuild).
Do not use the Project Manager.  Premiere Pro is an NLE.  Use it for it's intended purpose.  Use a real file manager (Windows Explorer on the PC, Finder on the Mac) to execute file operations.

  • Saving finished projects?

I'll apologize in advance if this is covered somewhere else but I did a fair amount of looking and found nothing.
When I'm done with a project I need to be able to burn all images and data to a DVD and an archive hard drive. I thought that binders were going to be the ticket. Now that there are no binders, what is the process.
I've been using 4.1 and really loving it. But if there is no way to save off finished projects in an way that will be useful in the future and also keeps my working library manageable, I can't see how this software can work for me. I am certainly willing to change my workflow but forever growing one library containing all projects is just not reasonable for me. Does each project need its own library?
    Thanks.

    Morgan,
I've been using separate libraries for each project as a guard against the flakiness that emerged (for me at any rate) when the libraries got big.
My basic plan (I've tried it on a small three day job with a separate library for each day and it seems to work) is thus:
    * Make a "master library" but don't work directly with it just yet
    * Make a separate "project" library for each job - import images, develop, print, galleries, whatever
    * At some (any) convenient point, write XMP files for all relevant images (still working to understand the "no JPEG XMP" impact on my keywording, rating and the like)
    * Cleanly import the images into the master library (it reads the data from the XMP and so all the LR work comes in with the image)
    * [ Updating XMPs in the project library and reading across the changes seems possible but I haven't quite cracked it yet. For those inevitable "oh I've just noticed that..." moments. ]
    * When the project is archived, open the master database and re-connect the entries for that project with the archive medium (eg DVD)
This gives me (I think) everything I want:
    - small, robust libraries on a per-project basis, can be archived with the project. When the files are reinstated to their original location, LR never knew they were gone.
    - a large, overall library (that may or may not be so robust) that can be reconstructed by re-importing images and XMPs held on backup media if required - a lot of elapsed time but not much interactive time (presumes the database has become corrupt rather than a disk crash or something).
    - a reference in the large library to exactly which archive medium contains which project without the need to mount it in order to browse previews.
I reserve the right to be wrong about some or all of this, I'm still thinking it through.
    Damian

  • My elements 9 and 13 are giving me an unknown error message when I try to publish or share a finished project.

I have a finished project that I want converted to AVI or downloaded on DVD. My elements 9 would just shut down when I attempted this so I upgraded to elements 13 in hopes this error would be fixed. In 13 I get an unknown error message and then it shuts down. I need serious help.

Important. This is not Adobe. Rather user to user. So, we have no control over or insider contact with Adobe on how it deals with its products or support for them.
We are fairly successful in what we do to share our work with others. If you wish to continue here, we are glad for the opportunity to be of assistance.
    If moving forward...mini test run....
    1. Move your source file which you describe as AVCHD.mts to a Local Disc C location like Video.
    2. Open a new project to the Expert workspace, and import that AVCHD.mts file into the project with the project's Add Media/Files and Folders. When the video is
in Project Assets, drag it to the Timeline Video Track 1 and Audio Track 1. Is there an orange line over that content or no colored line?
    3. Up to this point, have you gotten any Unknown Error message(s)?
If you are OK up to this point, I will ask for more details to fine tune the project settings. What I am presently not on firm ground with is the details of what you are trying to
import. In one instance you talk about AVCHD.mts file as the source and in another instance you talk about converting a project to .avi or a burn to disc product.
I am not 100% sure if you mean video file (likeAVCHD.mts) when you write project (meaning to me project file..prel). The difference would affect the troubleshooting plan.
Please review and consider. We need to be firm on the properties of what you are trying to import and from where in order to gain success. So, that is why I do not want to take
    anything for granted.
    Thanks.

  • How do I package a finished project to a client?

How do I package a finished project to a client.  She insisted on having three name logotypes with different effects and three monogram logotypes with different effects.  The finished name logotypes are on one artboard/file, and the finished monogram logotypes are on another artboard/file.
Should each logo have a separate file when I package everything up and send to her?  Thank you for your help.  I'm new at this.

    Venita,
This is how I usually do this. I create design framed in a artboard and when I want to create a modified version of it I duplicate the artboard with the artwork next to it. You can do this by choosing Duplicate Artboard from the Artboard's panel flyout menu or by using the Artboard tool holding Alt and dragging an artboard. The currently active artboard indicated by darker outlines and also highlighted in the Artboard panel is the focus of certain input such as (Ctrl + V) pasting coordinates, saving for Web with Clip to Artboard option, and some of the zooming methods like Ctrl+0 to fit in window. You make an artboard active by selecting something in it, selecting it in the Artboard panel which has higher priority, or using the Artboard tool. When you save your document the default preview that appears in programs that can preview Illustrator files such as Bridge use the artboard with ID 1 at the top of the list in the Artboad panel where you can rearange the order by dragging the artboard items.
Now, what I give to a client depends on how the client is advanced in using files. My prefered method for advanced clients is Save as PDF with the Illustrator default preset which saves the same thing as .ai file but has the advantage of displaying a preview of each artboard as a page using things like Windows Explorer windows. For less advance clients for ease of previewing or when comparing all versions of the design outside of Illustrator is preferable, I also can save a pdf version of the same file with each artboard being the default preview by moving it at the top of the list in the Artboad panel or a jpg file of each artboard using Save for Web.
    Hope this helps.

  • RH7: Project Manager Tab keeps refreshing continuously

I have upgraded my project from RH5 to RH7. There were in all 65 projects (.xpj) files that I upgraded. However, i have this issue with some of the files. When I open the xpj file, the Project Manager tab keeps refreshing. I cant scroll and select the files that are towards the end because the moment I click the scroll bar, the the tab refreshes and I cant click on the file.
Most of the files that I upgraded work fine.
    Please suggest a solution. Thanks.

Have you tried renaming the CPD and reopening RH to make it create a new one?

  • How can I export a finished project from iMovie when the "share" function will not respond?

Hopefully someone might have an answer for me. I am trying to export a finished project to You Tube. However, when trying to choose the file, it does not show up in the finished project list. I have gone back to iMovie to see if I've made a mistake with finalizing it. It seems to be finalized, but I cannot share it to anything (You Tube, Facebook, iTunes). I click on share and it does not respond. I click on File, scroll down to share, it does nothing. Has anyone else had this problem? How did you reslove it?

I experienced the same problem as mreingrover. The Share features of iMovie appear to be completely unimplemented.
I had had MacKeeper installed for a short while on my previous Mac; never on my new MacBook Pro. I could not find any trace of it in Application Support, Launch Daemons, or LaunchAgents, in either my user Library or the root Library. But I figured maybe there was some trace somewhere that had been copied over from the old system, so I deleted iMovie and went to reinstall it from the App Store.
Now the App Store wants $14.95 for an app that has never worked right, and which is (I think) supposed to be free with my new MacBook Pro Retina.

I have 3 i phones.  Can I have multiple accounts on one computer where it keeps the contacta and calendar for each?

My daughter and I both have iphones. I created an account (not separate itunes) for her on my computer so she could sync her phone/itunes but not have it interfere with mine since we have WAY different taste in music. Creating a different computer profile should work if you have separate itunes accounts, too.
If you all use the same itunes account, you can turn on Home Sharing. That way you can all download the same content without having to pay for it again. Not sure how or if that works with separate itunes accounts.
    Hope that helps!

I have always paid for apps with a credit card and now need to use an app store card but I can't get past the point where it keeps wanting my credit card updated.  And can't used the app card number.  Any advice???

I do NOT like using my credit card if I don't have to, and I went out of my way to go buy an Apple gift card, which I successfully redeemed into my Apple account. However, when I use the Apple "Cards" app, it will not let me use anything other than my credit card. I tried purchasing a card, hopefulling it would come out of my Apple store balance, but no such luck -- it came out of my credit card.
Apple is becoming more like Microsoft every day.

  • How do i save a finished project to a thumb drive (IDVD)

I am very new to Mac and it may be simple but i cant figure it out. I want it to be on my thumb drive so i can plug it into another mac, go the the thumb and press play. again in the IDVD editing screen it works fine, but i cant get it to save to the disk drive or thumb as a finished project. any suggestions email me at hooziz2005 at gmail dot com ( that i how new I am to mac....i dont even think i could figure out ho to read any answer you guys may post to this question of mine!!! Hello, hooziz,
    Welcome to the discussions.
iDVD should be thought of as a container that is used temporarily, just when you burn a DVD or encode the projects' data. The media is not stored within the project the way it is in iMovie. All the media used in iDVD are represented by a kind of alias, referring iDVD to actual file when the project is burned. So, if you move any media or even rename a photo, iDVD will not be able to locate it to burn your disk. Obviously then, if you move your iDVD project only, take it to another computer and expect to find all your photo, music and movie files there, you will not, because they are 'at home' on your computer.
If you want to be able to take your iDVD project to another Mac, you need to create a disk image file of your project. You do this in iDVD, by selecting 'save as disk image.' This process looks exactly like the burn process, but the end result is a disk image file, not a burned disk. The media information is encoded onto the disk image file, making it a self-contained file, so that all the media information is in that file. Now, you can transfer the disk image to a thumb drive and move it to another computer with all the data intact. You can burn a DVD disk from the disk image file using Disk Utility or Toast.
Many of us routinely create disk image files of our iDVD projects as a way to save the projects without having to save the original movies. iDVD disk image files take up less drive space. A disk image file can be used to burn DVDs. It also is a good way to determine if you have any problems with the encoding process.
