Firefox 3.6.13 has a terrible memory leak

When I first start up Firefox it consumes < 100MB. After a few hours of browsing and other work it's over a gig. If I leave it up all day it's almost 2 gig - and my PC has only 2GB, which means everything starts paging like crazy. The only way to release it is to shut down all instances of the firefox.exe process. And when you do that it takes a long time because firefox has to release all that memory back to the system.
People are complaining about this all over the web and some people say "it's not firefox, it's the add-ons" but that's a cop-out because it's the firefox.exe process that's taking the memory. This means firefox provides the sandbox for the add-ons to run in so it can control their resource allocations.

I have also noticed this memory leak. To be sure it wasn't my extensions, I launched Firefox with an profile with no extension. The memory leak was still very much present.

Funny, as soon as the project people started getting so much money from Google that they had to restructure to avoid losing its non-profit status Firefox developed an insatiable thirst for RAM that has only gotten worse in the YEARS since. They won't fix the problem, they won't acknowledge the problem, the ignore every post about it . . . . So, is killing FF's user base the price for the continued Google money that they so quickly whored themselves out for? Has FF been run by Google these last few years? They certainly couldn't wreck any better.

Nobody wants to admit it exsists on the Mozilla side must less fix it. Firewalls , etc do not cause the leak. You can remove all your ad-ons and leave firefox open and it will suck memory. Every tab you open drains your memory and continues to climb without opening any more. You can then close all your tabs and Firefox will not release the memory. When returning to the Profile Manager, you might be tempted to use the Delete Profile button. But... it's a bit too easy to accidentally delete your "real" profile, so I recommend resisting the temptation. If you do want to clean up later, I suggest making a backup of all your profiles first in case something were to go wrong.

Firefox 4 still suffering from a serious memory leak, ends up using 2GB of RAM on 5 tabs and a few plugins?!!

Why does even Firefox 4, which was supposed to have this issue fixed by now, still suffer from memory leaks?
I opened up 4-5 tabs, enabled Firebug to tweak a few pages, and an hour later Firefox usage is up to 2GB of RAM?

Now, seriously, if you run to suggest that it is most likely due to add-ons and that I should disable them all and start Firefox in safe mode, let me just cut you off right there and ask you this - out of millions of people who downloaded this browser, who the hell uses it without any plugins and/or in safe mode?
If you're gonna make a browser, make it so that it's lean and free of these issues to begin with, out of the box AND in case an addon or something else is added to it - can't they protect the core files and libraries from being victims to this, in case the addons are to blame?
And in case it's a Firefox issue to start off with, seriously, can you get a dedicated developer to look into this alone and get it fixed, once and for all?

I have six tabs open and generally have 3-5. It's been sitting here since last night. I'm using 296Mb ram which is high for me on Windows. My wife and son both use FF4 also and, having just checked, are between 210 and 268Mb respectively.
No one I know ever complains about high memory usage in FF4 and neither have I experienced it since FF2.5 when memory leaks any user would notice were all fixed.
So my advice is the same. If your add-ons aren't causing you problems, fix your system.

AME has a massive memory leak

I have the most recent version of AME CS6 (6.0.3.1) and I have 64GB of RAM installed which once I start encoding any source my RAM will be completely filled within 10 minutes of starting the encode. This is even with my allocating only 10 GB for CS6 through AME. I would like to know if a solution is in the works since this seems to be a common issue. Feel free to ask me any questions as I would love to see this truly fixed.

I did it in order to test that there was indeed a memory leak, I had intended on given CS6 50GB or so, though when I could no longer do anything because of all of my RAM was being USED I started to investigate. The other interesting thing is that the memory simple "disappears" as in no program claims to be using it, even though the system reports that all 64GB are in use. Also the "remaining" timer continues to increase in length even though AME is making progress with the file.

Yosemite Memory Leak Solution

I have had terrible memory leaks with Yosemite since installation and it comes and goes with a number of different programs including Mail and Chrome.
I went to visit the blue shirt guys and the only thing we could think to try was to reboot the Macbook air and reload the Yosemite using the recovery instructions here OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support.
So far 24 hours later this worked. One word of caution it took almost 29 hours for the recovery program to reload Yosemite I don't know why but just let the computer run it will say 55 hours to completion and it took about 30 hours to complete

Mail has a known problem with mailing attachements. It will go crazy after sending an attachement. You should be able to quit Mail and until the next attachement is sent it should be good.
Any Chrome issues should be reported to Google.

Memory Leak in Adobe Premiere CC on Windows

I installed Premiere CC on Windows 7 ( Intel Core i7-3770K [email protected] GHz, 16GB RAM). Software has a serious memory leak. After less than hour working on a very simple project (no rendering, no effects) memory usage reached 15 GB, at which point Premiere stopped responding. After closing and reopening software memory usage again started to increase. I was testing it by just scrubbing over timeline, no editing, memory usage still slowly crept-up. I called Adobe technical support, they tried to tell me, that this is normal. Right! It is normal to be forced to close and reopen application every hour? I do not think so. I have Premiere CC also installed on my MAC Book Pro, checked memory usage on much bigger project, it was steady, not creeping up, using beween 1 and 2 GB. I checked forums for this problem, there are several posts, but have not found any response from Adobe regarding this.
Update:
Tonight I continued working on same small project, within 2 hours I had to shut down Premiere 3 times. I also limited in setting memory Premier can use, that did not make any difference, usage by Premiere went to maximum - total 16 GB with about 2 GB taken by system and other stuff running. I am monitoring memory usage on resource monitor. Used Physical memory went 100 %, Commit Charge about 60%. This so far happened three times in a row.

Having said that, this is not a problem I see on any of the four Windows machines I work on. And it's not a problem commonly reported here. So my inclination is to suggest that something may be funky with your install.

Memory leak with NSZombie_*

Hi, Performance tool shows that my App has numerious small memory leak(120byte) with the name NSZombie*, such as NSZombienot_Atype, NSZombie_CFString, NSZombie_Pathstore2. What are they? They came from something like UIKit or CoreGraphics so I do not know how to fix them.

Memory leak with 1.6.0_07 in applet using Swing

I have a commercial application that has developed a memory leak with the introduction of the latest plugin. The applets chew up memory and eventually freeze. They did not before. Using jvisualm I see a build up of native arrays, primarily int[][] and char[]. I'm still investigating. Anyone have a similar experience?
The Applet uses a swing interface, uses buffered images and swing timers, and regularly performs http connections to the server which result in actions via the SwingUtil.invokeLater() method.

I am Using Internet Explorer Browser Version 6.0.Huge security hole.
Its not throwing Error / Exception Wrap a try/catch at the highest level possible.
Catch 'Throwable'. And log/display it somewhere.

Safari web process - memory leak?

Mac Pro seemed to have slowed to a crawl.
Safari 5.1.2 on SL 10.6.8
Activity Monitor showed I was low on memory - over 7GB was being used by 'safari web process' - slowly close all open pages until only left with two - one was simply the 'bing' home page, the other a page that had failed to load.
Anyone else had this kind of thing recently?

Safari has a known memory leak. Open teh Activity Monitor, sort the list of apps by Real Memory column. You will find one called Safari Web Content. This is the cause. If you are running an safari extensions, they use SWafari Web Content to run, you can try turning off your extensions to see if that helps. About the only know fix now, is to close safari regularly. 5.1.2 was suppose to close some leaks but has not. There are reports you can run safari in 32bit mode but I haven't confirmed if this helps or not.

Crystal report XI makeas memory leaking

My application use vs2003/COM+ with independ crystal report XI and it has a serious memory leaking issue. After I generated the report, the memory grew twice and then soon the application is crashed after it is up to the maximum memory.Microsoft helped me to look at the dump user file and their concusion is that the Crystal report was build with Debug mode and not release mode. I never heard it before since I only add module to my deployment project and never know it has debug and release module version. So Can I please get help and how can I get the release crystal report module?

You can not. The memory will never go down to zero - at least not as long as the app is running. There is a number of files, assemblies, etc. held in memory by the framework until the app is shut down. This behaviour is by design, and is actually quite important. First with an application more then one report can be loaded at one time, so the underlying dlls couldn't be unloaded until all reports for that application were closed. If we behaved this way, everytime a new report was opened we would need to load all our core dlls, search for optional dlls and read all the registry keys over again. This would be a performance hit in the speed of the report being viewed and on the entire system. By leaving our core engine open after the report is closed there is no longer this bottle neck, and really if we changed this we would get lots of complaints.
Now in general this is not that big of an issue for Windows applications as it is usually one user on a system at a time and 40 MB for a user is not much. For web applications I can see this as a potential issue, however if you are having 100 users at a single time running reports from your web application I might suggest that Crystal Reports may not be the best solution for you. I suggest you look at Business Objects Enterprise where you can offload the report generation from your Web App server to the Enterprise server to see if this would benefit you.
A memory leak would be if you see this number increasing for ever - unitl you run out of memory and the mchine become unresponsive.

Is anyone having problems with a bad memory leak once iOS 6.1.1 was installed?

My phone has a bad memory leak and after about 4 hours of being on the memory will be so low that ir resets the phone.

There are a number of reports from people with VW vehicles. Try removing the phone from the list in the car. Then, remove the vehicle from the list in the phone. Do a reset on the phone, hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. After the phone reboots, put the devices into discovery/pairing mode and see if they will connect. Otherwise, you might do a search of the forum looking for issues with VW vehicles.

Firefox has a memory leak and I need to update it, but I want to keep 3.5 because I don't like how the newest version of Firefox is set up.

My computer is running low on RAM, and when I look at what processes are using the most memory, firefox is the number one using between 28,000 to 93,000k, so I'm guessing that it has a memory leak.
And because of that memory leak I have to update firefox, however I really dislike the newest version of firefox and I'd prefer to stick with the version I have, which is 3.5.

Often the memory problems are not just from Firefox in isolation, but partly relating to all the extensions available for it and then the videos and animations it runs on media rich sites.
The first thing to do is to upgrade to firefox 3.6 which is at least a supported version (Maybe not for much longer)

Next version after 3.6 is 4, you should avoid that, it did have some memory problems, that were worse than 3,6 and firefox 4 is no longer secure or supported.
The techies at Firefox have been working on memory problems recently and have made many improvements, but some of these improvements are only seen in the trial versions of Firefox.
I would in fact suggest you upgrade to Firefox 5 the current release version (soon to be replaced with Firefox 6)
I am able to run Firefox v3.6 to v8 on legacy XPs with less than 1GB RAM. Firefox in itself is not necessarily very demanding in terms of RAM. I am not sure what the figures are you are quoting, or whether they are high. ( Note 1Gb is in the order of 1 000 000 k )
As for not liking the set-up of new versions of Firefox, there is quite abit that can be changed, maybe you would be able to configure it more to your liking with little effort.

Firefox 6.0 has memory leak

Firefox 6.0 (release) has a memory leak.
Tested with 5 windows and 43 pages loaded and left overnight, it crashed after several hours. Able to fully repro this every time.
I left it for 10 mins after all pages loaded. I opened Task Manager and I can see the Memory (Private Working Set) increasing every few seconds.

Well I'm using 7 beta and my memory usage is just short of 600,000k with plugin container using another 220,000k. There is a massive problem with this!

Firefox 21.0 on OS X 10.8.4 still has a memory leak that occurs with no Add ons, 1 tab and leads to 3GB of memory usage in 10 minutes.

While using Firefox 21.0 on OS X 10.8.4 with 4GB RAM, Firefox memory usage marches up and up until at 3GB (on my iMac) Firefox hangs and is 100% non-responsive and must be killed with Force Quit. It takes 10 minutes to occur.

Unfortunately, the problem was WORSE in FF 22.0. I regressed to FF21.0 and shut off automatic updates. I may even go back to FF3.6, which is the last one where I didn't see this problem.

Firefox 4.0 RC has huge memory leak + slow down problem

Firefox 4.0 RC Seems to have a huge memory leak issue. After leaving the program open for around half an hour the RAM usage climbs to over 1 gb.
However, I have 12 gb of physical ram, so firefox staking 1 gb for itself is not too big of a problem (and is probably a blessing as it means it's caching more data), but the problem is that the UI begins to slow down and become clunky after about 30 minutes.
Browsing, switching tabs, even typing becomes jittery and not very responsive.
This happens regardless of how many tabs I have open.
Now it's also crashing every once in a while.

Even with Firefox 4.0 (Release) running in Safe Mode, with all add-ons and themes disabled, I'm still inclined to think there's something screwy going on here.
I was watching Page Faults/sec, Page File Bytes and Working Set in Performance Monitor and tailing the Privoxy log for requests. Even with Firefox minimized and "doing nothing" (making no requests, anyway), over the space of a 10 minute period the Working Set grew from 244,375,552 bytes to 274,939,004 bytes (averaging 50,939 bytes/second). This behaviour doesn't seem consistent though - sometimes it doesn't seem to grow at all.
Additionally the Page Faults/Sec went nuts, accompanied by a step in Page File Bytes and Working Set, whenever a request got made to http://safebrowsing.clients.google.com/safebrowsing/downloads which seems to happens on a regular basis (approximately every 30 minutes).
