Firefox freezes everytime I try to clear the search history.

It appears I somehow got upgraded to the newest version of firefox. And everytime I try to clear the history it freezes. Then I get errors... Something about a script... or the program will just say "not responding"
Can this be fixed? If not can I download an older version which worked?

Are you clearing the cookies as well?
This problem can be caused by clearing the cookies via [[Clear Recent History]].
* Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history" > [X] Clear history when Firefox closes > Settings
* Firefox > History > Clear Recent History or Tools > Clear Recent History
Try to exclude the cookies to see if that helps.
If you use [[Clear Recent History]] to clear the cookies then Firefox also tries to clear the cookies from plugins like Flash and starts a plugin-container process for each plugin and possibly for each cookie (?) and that can add extra time if there are a lot of cookies to remove and also can cause an unresponsive script error to appear.

In Safari, use the open book symbol to go to bookmarks. At the top of the list is "History", tap history and then tap the clear button on the bottom left of the screen. That clears the search history as well.

When I try to clear the last hour of History, Firefox freezes and will not respond no matter how long I wait for it. Before Firefox 4, it might take as along as two minutes. Back in version 3.6, it only took a few seconds.

Thank you for your detailed question. It sounds like the real issue is pdf files. Are there any antivirus/firewalls that might be blocking this specific file type? or are there any preferences in your control panel that might be blocking this?

If the same website is opening each time you launch a browser (Safari?) hold down the shift key as you launch to prevent previous pages from opening.
Have a look at your settings in Safari > Preferences. Especially General and Privacy.
Reset Safari to remove cookies and other stored data.

I had the same problem yesterday with an application file that was deleted after installation of an update. I used "Put Back" to move it back to its original location, then used "Show Package Contents" to delete/empty trash for small groups of files at a time. I suppose the application file itself may have been too large to empty at one time. I hope this helps.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Where is your library file? If it is on a network share rather than a local disk that can cause a big slowdown.
Every change in the library requires that all smart playlists are reevaluated and the library is rewritten to disc. As your library grows the time taken to perform these actions will grow exponentially rather than linearly.
As to duplicates, I've written a script called DeDuper which you might find useful. See this thread for background.

I'm unable to clear my search history after many attempts with the firefox instructions as I'm unable to check the "Form and Search History" box for some reason

I've tried several times to clear my search history without any success. I've been able to do so in the past, but this is the first time I've tried in a while and for some reason it will not let me check the box for "Form and Search History." Then sometimes it will let me check that box, but when I click "ok" to apply the clearing of the search history, nothing happens and it still remembers all my sites. At that point I try to clear it again and its back to not letting me check the "Form and Search history" box (I've gone through this cycle a few times). I tried looking through some of suggested articles that Firefox sent me too, but I don't know much about computers and just doing the things they seem talking about isn't working either. Thanks for your response. When it comes to computers, I am almost
illiterate. I have a HP Pavillion PC and have used Photoshop Elements 5.0
for a number of years. Computer crashed couple of weeks ago and I sent it
back to HP. They returned it with new guts I think. Had to reinstall my
programs and use my external backup to get all the stuff back, including
about 11,000 pics. Now, every time I try to put the SD card in to download
the pics to the Organizer, it downloads about 4 or 5 pics and freezes.
Have to use task manager to get PC going again. Been doing the same thing
for years and this just happened since I got new PC back. Is that any help?

I haven't installed any software, or made any updates (that I can remember.) When the browser freezes I can't "force quit" them. I have to manually shut the computer down are restart it. I would appreciate any help you can provide.

Safari and Firefox box.... it could be a problem with the hard drive itself, not your browsers.
Just to make sure, boot from your install disc, run Disk Utility to Verify and if necessary, Repair any errors Disk Utility reports.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
(In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first from the installer menu)
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
