Firefox opens new windows instead of tabs on my mac laptop not on my PC

Firefox 3.6.8 opens multiple windows instead of new tabs no matter how I select the options in preferences. This happens on my Macbook Pro but not on my Windows PC.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

You can also try "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults" on the [[Safe mode]] start window.

Why is firefox opening new window instead of tabs?

Until today when I clicked on a link it would open a new tab. For some reason when I click on a link now it opens a new window. I'm not sure why. I check my options and it's set up to open tabs. Yesterday it was opening in tabs. I just don't know what's going on, hope you can help.

No matter what settings I change Firefox opens new windows instead of new tabs. How can I stop it?

After the last update when selecting a searched item a new window opens. Then when you select an item in the newly opened search window, it takes you to the item in another new window. It will continue each time you search and select. Very frustrating. Like Firefox better before the udpate.

My firefox opens new window automatically, how can i change this?

ok, since 3 or 4 days, my firefox opens new window automatically. it happends at lease 20 times a day. sometimes it happends after i open some webs in new tabs, sometimes it just happens..without doing anything...and the new window often times show the homepage of google...sometimes there were other shopping-web. i try to block them unter "options-content-block pop-up windows"...but it doesnt work. and sometimes the normal webs are redireckted to some webseits...i never had this before. i didnt open some untrustable webs....so...what's going on? how can i change it?

Do you mean you have created A NEW Apple ID...
If so...
It should be Noted that anything Downloaded with a Particular Apple ID is tied to that Apple ID and Cannot be Merged or Transferred to a Different Apple ID
If not..
Settings > iTunes and App Store > Apple ID = Sign Out... Then Sign In using the preferred Apple ID.

Firefox homepage button opens new window instead of new tab

When I hit the homepage button on the Firefox toolbar, it now opens a whole new window instead of a new tab. It used to work until I upgraded to Firefox 9. Any suggestions as to how to fix this?

Firefox 4 new tab opens new windows instead

After upgrade to Firefox 4, the feature "mouserightclick-open new tab" opens a new window, instead.
From then on, all "open new tab" operations open new tabs in the other window, the second one created.

Thanks for the hint, cor-el , but problem persisted even with all Add-ons disabled.
But after some 8 days and several O.S. reboots, the problem disappeared .
No action was taken, I suppose that it was some bug that the developers corrected.

Some programs open new window instead of new tab in open window

Firefox 17.0.1. I have the option "Open new windows in a new tab instead" set, I use the Tree Style Tab 0.14.2012111201 addon (and others unrelated to tabs or windows), and I have multiple profiles. It seems that since I started using multiple profiles some programs (MediaMonkey's help, for example) insist on opening a new Firefox window. If I select any of the one or more currently open profiles it says "Profile in use". Some programs that want to open an internet site to show their help files do open a tab in the current browser window, as expected and desired. But more programs cause the Choose a profile box to display.

Make sure that you do not start Firefox with the -no-remote switch or have set the environment variable MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1 (Control Panel > System > Advanced > Environment variables).
If you need to have more than one profile open at the same time then start subsequent instances with the -no-remote command line switch. 
You can not send links from other programs to a Firefox instance that is started with the -no-remote switch.
In such a case you need to drag links in a Firefox window or paste the link in the location bar.

Unable to open link in new tab in same window; opens new window instead. Preference is checked correctly. Is this new to version 3.6.11?

Before I updated to the latest of Firefox 3.6.11, I would click on a link in the window and it would open a new tab in the same window. Now whenever I do the same thing and entirely new window is opened. In preferences "Open new windows in a new tab instead" is checked. I'm using a Mac OS 10.4.11. Should I downgrade to an earlier version to solve this problem?

After clicking the preference on, off, then on again, the tabs feature has returned to normal upon a restart.

that's pretty much it - when i want to open a link and i right click on it and select OPEN IN NEW TAB, firefox opens a new window instead. this started quite recently and i have not made any changes to cause it.

I had this problem too. Inspired by cor-el's suggestion, I just disabled Tab Mix Plus 0.4.0, and the problem went away.
What is a little weird about it is that for me, all new tabs opened in the '''same''' windows. I could have several windows open, but every new tab opened in just one window, and always the same one.

When browsing the internet, if I'm using a browsing session from a previous day, when I select to open a new link as a new tab, it will open in a new window instead.
In my case, I put my work computer to sleep yesterday evening and started using it again this morning. Now all my links try to open in a new window even if I specifically choose to "Open Link in New Tab".

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
* Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
In Firefox 4 you can use one of these to start in [[Safe mode]]:
* Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
* Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)

Why does firefox opens new window/tab when i click on a link

if I click any link in Firefox it will open another blank window in addition to the link clicked, blank window opens on top. how do I stop this

If a website codes its links to open in a new window, you can divert that to a new tab.
The basic setting for this is here:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Tabs
The first checkbox: "Open new windows in a new tab instead"
In some cases, a website uses a script to launch a new window with special features, such as a set height/width, or with one or more toolbars removed. To avoid breaking sites that create dialog boxes this way, Firefox does not normally divert this kind of window to a new tab. If Firefox is sending ALL links to new windows or new tabs, you might have an extension like Tab Mix Plus or Tab Utilities which changes the built-in tab handling features. You would need to explore their settings to get it just the way you want it.

Firefox opens a new window rather then tab from any other process calling firefox. Example screen grab utility needs to load a new url. FF opens a new instance of firefox. It use to open a new tab.

Always enjoyed being able to open new windows in a tab. However, after upgrading found I was no longer able to do this.

Have search all over web and tried every solution I could find; explored addons, restored, even reinstalled 19.0 but I am still unable!
It is very frustrating.
Would appreciate suggestions (never thought I'd say this but Safari is looking good!).

Let me see if I understand the original problem. You can checked the preference on the following tab to divert new windows to tabs instead:
Firefox menu > Preferences > Tabs
And that was not working correctly, either on all sites or a few particular sites.
Note that by default, sites that open a new window with particular specifications, such as the size, bypass that setting. To force even those windows into a new tab, you can use the about:config preference editor.
In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
In the filter box, type or paste '''link.o''' and pause while the list is filtered.
Double click these and set the value as desired:

Searches pop up in new window instead of tabs now

In the last couple weeks, if I do a search on my homepage MSN, the results show up in a new window instead of a tab like they used to. It doesn't happen with any other page, ie Google, Yahoo, AOL, etc. I contacted MSN and they say it is a Firefox issue.
I checked in my options and I have the option set to open new windows in tabs instead but it still keeps happening. It wasn't doing this a couple weeks ago when it didn't before.

Firefox opens new window mouse down

I asked about this a few years ago but don't remember the solution. With a newer version of FF it's back again. If I move the mouse downward too quickly after a new tab appears, the new tab becomes a new window instead. I'd like to stop this highly annoying behavior please.

Firefox lets you "tear off" a tab into a new window. It should only happen if you happen to click and drag down on a tab; just moving the mouse shouldn't do it, at least in theory.
There is an add-on named [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/bug489729-disable-detach-and-t/ bug489729 (Disable detach and tear off tab)] that you might have been using. Has it stopped working?? You could check with it was disabled during upgrade here:
Tools menu > Add-ons > Extensions category
