'Firefox' pulldown menu button (Orange one) very unstable

When I click on the orange 'Firefox' button (or any button in Firefox 4.0 for that matter) 90% of the time the menu appears on the mouseDown but disappears on the mouseUp. After the menu disappears it leaves a shadow box where the menu used to be. The menu does not wait for the user to make a selection from the pulldown before it disappears. It works for a very short time after a Firefox restart...maybe a minute or two

I have encountered similar (maybe identical?) menu problems. And I have stumbled upon a two stage procedural workaround that works reliably for me. First stage is to open a second firefox window as soon as firefox starts running. Then, each time a menu pull down (or pop-up) goes dead, I click on the non-active firefox window. I then immediately click to reactivate the window that had the menu problem. And the menu operation that had stopped working will then have normal functionality (at least until its next random malfunction)!
It looks like some unknown amount of firefox idle time is the key to creating the menu problem. And my procedural workaround gives me the impression that it is "refreshing" something that is needed by pull-down and pop-up menus.

• Can't find Firefox Android menu button in Jelly Bean

I always keep Firefox for Android current to the latest version, but since I upgraded my Android to Jelly Bean 4.1.2 in a Samsung Galaxy S2, I now cannot find the Menu button for Firefox anywhere. I am trying to bookmark a page and your instructions say to press on the Menu button and then on the Star button, but though I've done that in the past in ICS, those buttons apparently do not exist for me now.
Your pictures on the Web show a bar at the bottom of the screen with a Menu icon, as well as a popup menu that shows the Bookmark Star as one of the Menu options. I don't have a Menu icon or any other icons at the bottom of my screen. I have the phone's physical Back button on the lower right below the screen and the <phone's> physical Menu button on the lower left below the screen, but when I tap the <phone's> Menu button while I have a page showing in FF, all I get is a long menu of choices beginning with Share, Find in Page, Request Desktop Site, Tools, etc. There are no choices that give me a Star with which to bookmark a page.
Please advise how I can find the Bookmark Star or change the Settings to make it reappear.
Thank you.

Hi, Swarnava,
Thank you for your prompt response. Unfortunately, however, the "3 dot" icon you outlined in red at the upper right of the FF screen in the screenshot link you sent simply does not exist on my screen. If it did, I would long ago have tried it and all would be well.
Using your image as an example, the "3" that indicates the 3 open tabs is all the way to the far right on my screen, under the time ("5:19"), and the white Search bar (which in your image shows "Add-ons") is wider, taking up all the space to the left of the "3." That "3 dot" icon for the menu just isn't there (or anywhere else that I can find). That's why I'm going crazy trying to figure out how to get into the menu.
I really appreciate your response and hope that you or someone can come up with a way to make my FF menu key reappear. If no other solution is available, I guess I'll have to uninstall FF, then reinstall it and hope for the best.
Thanks again for your help.

• Spry, horizontal menu, need all menu buttons on one line

hi in DW CS4I would like to understand why the spry menu that I have doesn't line up on a straight line horizontally. sometimes it lines up correctly in DW, but when I either go to live view or publish it, one of the menu buttons goes on the next line. If they are all on the same line, sometimes the menu does not go to the end of the other side of the div tag that it is inside of. If you have an article or any tips that you may have, please do share as i am going insane. I guess I should stick to CSS, but I often have the same problems as well.
Thank you.
I currently do not have  URL for this website.
Please see the code attached to this post.

Simply, your menu list items are too wide (altogether) to fit on the same line.
I see that you have defined your div#container as 1000px, and your div#nav_bar as, well, it will default to 1000px. Then you have set your MenuBar to 80% of that width, and your list items as 16.8% of that.
So far, everything is flexible.
When you get down to ul.MenuBarHorizontal a, however, you have set padding: padding: 0.5em 0.75em; If you change your padding units to percentages, you should be able to find acceptable measures that will allow your list items to remain on one line.
Keep in mind that, as the following references notes, in some browsers padding is measured in addition to the stated width of your element:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Explorer_box_model_bug
So make sure ALL your percentages add to 100%...including the horizontal padding (for both sides!) and the width (don't add in the vertical padding...that could be left as is). Actually, add them up to slightly less than 100% for comfort. If you get a gap at the end of the menubar, center the menubar and apply a background to the containing div.

• My Firefox 8 Menu button doesn't work and neither does the right click in the firefox window

It seems that all the drop down buttons in the browser, including the bookmarks dropdown menu in the toolbar and the main menu button (firefox button), no longer work. This happened after i upgraded to firefox 8. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times while also deleting user preferences and stuff but that doesnt work. But everything seems to work in safe mode properly. So i disabled all my addons in the normal mode but it still doesn't solve the problem. My right-click doesnt work anywhere in the browser window either. And also, although the menus are not showing, it seems that they are still there because if i click in the area that a button would be in the function activates, this is how i was able to disable the addons.

Perhaps, it's a multi-monitor setup issue. I noticed that the problem happens on my right monitor, but it doesn't happen on my left monitor! I have an nvidia card.

• I have a little white block on the bottom left corner of the firefox dropdown menu button that has no function. I have checked with friends and other computers and they don't appear to have the same issue.

the button is still functional it's just a small white square with a black dot in it. I can't really say any more

I had that problem too. The square went away when I disabled the FoxTab (v 1.4.1) extension. It says on the website that its for Firefox 3, but other than the white square it worked fine on my FF4.

• On Windows 8, some widgets, such as the menu button near the upper right, stop working after some time, and functionality is restored by rebooting the PC.

I use the latest releases of Firefox as they become available on a Windows 8 PC. Firefox works properly, usually for a few hours, before annoying problems manifest. The problem I'm addressing here is some widgets, including some Firefox widgets and isolated widgets (such as buttons and pull-down selectors) in some websites stop working. In Firefox, the Menu button (the three stacked dashes icon) stops working. And the Download arrow sometimes stops working also. Sometimes, sub-items such as Print stop working. For some pull-downs, the up and down arrow keys might still work even though I might now be able to select with the mouse. Closing and reopening Firefox usually restores some functionality. However, I usually have to reboot the PC to restore all functions which stopped working. Then I am good for usually a few hours again. Another annoyance, which others have addressed, is the eventual appearance of Chinese-looking characters on the tab labels bar across the top. Restarting Firefox gets rid of these for the time being. Thanks for investigating.

hello, maybe that's an issue with hardware acceleration - please try updating your graphics driver, or in case this doesn't solve the issue or there is no new version available at the moment, disable hardware acceleration in the firefox menu ≡ > options > advanced > general (that setting will take a restart of the browser to take effect).
the oriental characters are a displaying flaw caused by the mcafee site advisor extension - please try to disable or remove that in case you have it present until there is an update by mcafee that can fix the problem.

• Keep Orange Firefox Menu Button in Fullscreen

When I use Firefox in Fullscreen it get rid of the Orange Firefox menu button how can I keep the menu button in fullscreen

If you want to keep the Firefox menu button then your only option is to maximize the window.<br />
That should place the menu bar and tab bar in the title bar.
It is possible to have the menu bar showing in addition of the Navigation Toolbar and Tab bar if you hover the mouse to the top with code in the userChrome.css file.<br />
This only works if the menu bar is visible in normal mode (View > Toolbars / Firefox > Options)
Add code to the userChrome.css file below the default @namespace line.

I have reset Firefox and also re-installed it without any joy

Hello,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
#*Windows:
#**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
#**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Installing Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!
Thank you.

• When using a website's pulldown menu (i.e. Facebook), the text is not visible. I have already reset Firefox/

I go to facebook and click on one of the toolbar options like messages. The drop down window opens but no text is visible. If I click on a region of the open window, sometimes it will take me to a message. This also happens on yahoo.

Have you noticed any other problems with the colors or styles on these or other sites?
If you use command+a to Select All text on the page, can you see content in the blank box?
Here is some general advice:
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
(1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Command+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
"3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site:
* right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
* Tools menu > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
* click the padlock or globe icon in the address bar > More Information > "View Cookies"
In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

• I have downloaded updates for Firefox but my browser doesn't look like it should, no single menu button etc, how do I get it to look like your demo?

The last few times I have been prompted to update my firefox for desktop, my browser has not looked any different even though I get notification to say updates completed successfully. When I update firefox gives a demo of new features and how my browser should look, mine has not looked like the demo for the past few updates. It's annoying because I really like the look of having just one menu button. How can I change the look of my browser?

The Firefox button displays by default only in Windows Vista and Windows 7. You can have it display in Windows XP
Menu Bar<br />
*right-click empty space at the end of the Tab Bar, click "Menu Bar" to place a checkmark
*Menu Bar checked = Menu Bar on; Firefox button off
*Menu Bar un-checked = Menu Bar off; Firefox button on
*Other methods of doing the same:
**click Firefox button > Options, click Menu Bar
**Quick toggle Menu Bar on/off: ALT+V+T+M
To have the Menu Bar temporarily display when the Firefox button is on, press the ALT key or the F10 key to make the Menu Bar appear and use your mouse to make selections from the temporarily displayed Menu Bar. Why would you want to do this? The selections available are different.

• Firefox opens but nothing shows/load in the window, not even menu buttons

I open Firefox & a window opens but nothing loads or shows up, not even menu buttons. Occasionally when you blindly click around some menus will open but options beyond that don't produce anything.
I have (not necessarily in this order):
Uninstalled Firefox, deleted all remaining folders, then reinstalled (twice).... didn't help.
Reverted PC back to before Firefox updated... didn't work.
Uninstalled, Debugged my PC, reinstalled.... didn't work.
Turned off firewalls & switched settings to make sure nothing was blocking it from working.... didn't work.
At this point, after surfing Mozilla support site & not finding anyone else having this exact issue I'm not sure what else to do. I love Firefox & want to keep using it (I HATE using Internet Explorer) but the only other solution I can think of is use Google Chrome or IE.
I have Windows 7, use McAfee, & SpyHunter. My laptop is less than 5 y.o. & I keep thing updated reg. so I don't think anything should be out of date or incompatible.
Thanks!

Hello,
Currently in version 33, Firefox has implemented a new, faster way of loading webpages. This new feature is called OMTC. However, there are still some tweaks Mozilla developers are making to this.
There is a known issue that Mozilla works on very hard to fix: if you are experiencing black webpages on some sites, here's what you can do to avoid the problem in the meantime:
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
* Click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".<br>

To disable Hardware Acceleration
* Click the menu button and select Options.
* In the Firefox Options (or Preferences) window, click the Advanced tab, then select General.
* In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
Now, exit Firefox, wait a few seconds, and then start it normally.
Please let us know if this solves the problem. Engineering is also gathering more information about the issue would request that you fill out this survey
I should also mention that other users with this problem had an embedded intel hd graphics card with an old driver present. Until Mozilla comes up with a fix, if you want Hardware Acceleration in Firefox, you can try to update your driver through the appropriate link below to see if that helps:

• I installed Firefox 4 and the Orange App button plus the reload and stop are not showing

I installed Firefox 4 and the Orange App button plus the reload and stop are not showing.

You see the orange (on Linux gray) Firefox button if the Menu Bar is hidden, so you need to hide the Menu bar to get the new appearance.<br />
If you need to access the hidden Menu bar then press F10 or hold down the Alt key to make the Menu Bar appear temporarily.<br />
You can also place the Tab Bar on top.
* View > Toolbars : [ ] Menu Bar
* View > Toolbars : [X] Tabs on Top
Firefox 4 uses a combined Stop/Reload/Go button that is positioned at the right end of the location bar.<br />
During the page load process it shows as a Stop button and after the loading has finished the button is changed to a Reload button.<br />
If you type in the location bar then that button becomes a Go button.<br />
You can middle-click that Reload button to duplicate the current tab to a new tab.
To move the Stop and Reload buttons to their position to the left of the location bar you can use these steps:
* Open the "View > Toolbars > Customize" window to move the Stop and Reload button out of the location bar.
* Drag the Reload and Stop buttons to their previous position to the left of the location bar.
* Set the order to "Reload - Stop" to get a combined "Reload/Stop" button.
* Set the order to "Stop - Reload" or separate them otherwise to get two distinct buttons.
