Firefox's kerning is so bad that it ruins text alignement?

Here, I made an image of my issue, http://i.imgur.com/gv9jXnY.png
Firefox on the top, IE10 is on the bottom
As you can CLEARLY see, the repeat kerning failures in Firefox are so bad that they throw off the entire alignment of text, I searched for atleast six hours on how to resolve this, I could not find an answer
Could you tell me how I can tell firefox to display text in the same way that IE does?
I'm a DieHard IE fan who finally decided to stop using IE, I find Firefox (Personally Waterfox) to be a good alternative, the issue is that the text Literally Hurts My Eyes to read and look at, on Every webpage
What the hell do I need to do to Force firefox to render text the same way as IE?

Okay, so for example: http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf4/forum/threadview/2955064785067990285/2/
What I notice is that Chrome does not break the URLs and Firefox does: Firefox breaks by moving the / to the beginning of the next line. (I can't test IE newer than 8 on this system.)
That forum has a typo in its style rule for that signature block:
word-break: break-word;
break-word is not a valid value for the word-break property, so it is ignored and the browsers are using their default rules. If the site intended to use
word-break: break-all;
then the [https://developer.mozilla.org/docs/Web/CSS/word-break MDN article on word-break] suggests that all browsers would display that text like Firefox does.
You can override what Firefox is doing in that signature block with a custom style rule:
.forum-threadview-post-signature {
word-break: keep-all !important;
(Demo of the change attached.) Custom style rules can be applied to a page automatically each time you load it in Firefox by creating/editing a userContent.css file in your settings folder, or by using the Stylish extension.
But it depends on how motivated you are... also, I might find time to research why Firefox and other browsers have different defaults when it comes to breaking words at slashes. Aren't we all supposed to follow the same standards??

OK it's now fast............but for me that's all at present.
I tried all browsers, ended with firefox & chrome, preferred firefox but it is updated badly too many times causing me to have to re-install on many occasions, very time consuming.
The last update also hanged my PC resolution viewing type, it became even more blurred on every program on my PC.
The previous version was acceptable. I now intend to use chrome more often & maybe uninstall firefox for good.
?security updates, are these likely to affect my PC performance in any way?

  • I am running mac osx 10.5.8, but FireFox is giving me a message that it is not compatible with my version of osx and will not let me install. The web site says it is compatible with osx 10.5. Am I missing something?

I was able to download the current version of FireFox but when I tried to install, I got a message that FireFox is not compatible with my current os. What else should I consider or try doing to get FireFox to work?

Beginning with Firefox 4, Macs must have an Intel x86 processor (which you do NOT have; yours is a PPC Mac) '''''<u>and</u>''''' OSX 10.5 or higher.

  • Is Firefox working on the OS BADA for the Samsung Wave II GT- S8530?

I posted this 3 months ago in your Mobile forum: Hoping for a feedback from someone at Firefox. So far nothing. Can someone respond? Is Firefox working on the OS BADA for the Samsung Wave II GT- S8530? Any guess if there is something in the works for completion? Thanks
I recently purchased a Samsung Wave II GT-S8530 mobile phone while I was in Thailand. It is a great phone and I would like to use Firefox on it. I was just asking if there was anybody working on this new OS called BADA? If so, I would really like to find out if it will be available soon? Thanks for your help and you guys have a wonderful product. I put it on everyone of my friends PC as it is soooo much better than explorer.
I really would appreciate if someone from the Tech/engineering/or anyone in the know, side of Firefox that would respond to me on this issue. BADA OS is a growing platform serving more and more mobile styles. This OS could really use a Firefox browser.
    Thank you for your time!
    Wader

Sorry, we don't have support for BADA. There are no plans to support it at this time.

On every web page, the cursor flickers on and off so badly that it is difficult and sometimes impossible to select anything - button, checkbox, whatever.
And, with reference to the pasted information below, I did not change or update any preferences. I simply had 2 add-ons disabled at installation of the new version of the browser.

i cant access firefox, everytime i try i get that windows can't find the file, i tried downloading it again but it still gave me the same message. the problem has nothign to do with my internet because it wonks on internet explorer and everythign is fine, my computer just can't access firefox for some reason. i tried uninstallign ti adn then installing it again, but that didnt work, i tried installing a different version and it still didnt work.
okay the exact message is" Windows cannot find 'C:\Program Files\Mozilla Forefox 4.0 Beta 1\firefox.exe'. make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.
Nothing happens after i install is the "Launch Firefox now" checkbox set, the same message comes up.
i usually start firefox from the shortcut i have on my desktop but when this happened i thought that the shortcut is the problem, but i went to the Mozilla firefox folder and tried it from there, but it didnt work. i also tried downloading different versions of firefox but that didnt work either.

can you tell me the solution to "windows cant find firefox" error. thanks.

When I try to download applications such as Internet Explorer, Yugma, and iTunes in Firefox, I just get a window that says "save" or "cancel", but never one that says "run" so I don't think it's actually installing anything. It shows up in a "download" window, then the icon shows up on my desktop. When I click on it to launch it, it says "open with" and I get the same "save/cancel" window. It's a continuous circle. What am I doing wrong??

What application are you choosing to open the files with?
Because of how integrated it is with windows IE should work. If it's not working, something more widespread could be wrong with your computer that would also prevent other browsers from working properly. Of course we'd love you to stick with Firefox, but you should get help with IE, too.

  • When I put a website Icon on my desktop, how do I make firefox use the Icon native to that website instead of the default Firefox Icon?

When I drag and drop a website onto my desktop, how can I make Firefox use the icon native to that website instead of the default firefox icon?
I have even gone painstakingly (SEVERAL TIMES) to the sites with IE, dragged the site onto my desktop in order to obtain the site native icons for my desktop (and deleted the ones with the Firefox icon) .... but they all soon revert to the default Firefox icon.
    E X T R E M E L Y F R U S T R A T I N G !!!!!!!!!

I don't want icons from the Firefox library.
I want the icon that comes from the website I'm making the shortcut for.
(If you go to a site in IE you will see the site generated icon at the left end of the URL in the address field.)
If I make IE my default browser I am able to get (and keep) those icons as shortcuts on my desktop without a problem.
I want to keep Firefox as my default browser.
So I want to know how to make Firefox accept the icon that comes from the website like IE does.
I have even gone to the trouble to use IE to create the shortcuts with the site specific icons.....but after I do that...... FIREFOX CONVERTS THEM TO THE FIREFOX DEFAULT ICON as soon as I re-boot or refresh my desktop.
I generally prefer Firefox as a browser....but If there's no fix.....I'm going to dump Firefox.

Are you really using Windows ME?<br />
Your More system details list shows an IE8 user agent
You need to do a clean reinstall and remove the Firefox program folder before installing a newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • When Firefox last automatically updated, it suggested that Adobe reader needed updating, now, with Adobe Reader 8, I can no longer print from the internet, only to file. Help please.

When Mozilla Firefox last automatically updated, it suggested that Adobe Reader needed updating. After updating to Adobe Reader 8, I can no longer print from the internet, only to a file. I know the printer and its interface must be OK because Word prints normally.

Problem solved, it was my oversight, I had not removed the check from the Print to File box in the print set up.

  • When I tried to download the new version of firefox I get an error message that says "you computer must be restarted to complete an earlier upgrade" when I restart it says the same thing. I cannot use firefox at all at the moment.

When I tried to download the new version of firefox I get an error message that says "your computer must be restarted to complete an earlier upgrade" when I restart it says the same thing. I cannot use firefox at all at the moment. When I try to uninstall in the control panel, the same message pops up.

If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
    * Firefox 5.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder], so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data.

  • I can't uninstall/install FireFox due to a pop-up that says: Your computer must be restarted to complete a previous upgrade of Firefox..."

This problem arose when I attempted to upgrade my existing FireFox browser to the new FireFox 7. I clicked through the auto-update, but didn't think that anything changed, as the browser didn't look like the image in the feature explanation image I was viewing. I then tried to download Firefox 7, and when I tried to instal it, this process began.
I can't uninstall/install FireFox due to a pop-up that says: Your computer must be restarted to complete a previous upgrade of Firefox..." When restarted and attempted again, the same pop up appears and I am stuck in an infinite loop.
I cannot locate the Mozilla file within my program files to try and delete cantankerous upgrade components, which seems to resolve this issue for many people. See: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/796566
I also tried completely deleting Firefox, which didn't work either-- I ended up doing a system restore, only to be met with the same infinite loop.
Now, when I click on the Mozilla icon, nothing happens. No window opens, no error message, nothing.
Why can't I find the Mozilla folder in my Programs File but can see it in Control Panel "Add or Remove Programs" (though I can't uninstal due to infinite loop)?

It is probably because you are not properly closing Firefox. Restarting your system would make sure that Firefox had terminated, but you do not have to do that.
To properly close Firefox on Windows systems, use
:File > Exit or "Firefox:" button > Exit
When you get the message "Firefox is already running" it is too late, and you must force termination of Firefox through the Windows Task Manager before restarting Firefox. Windows 7 has a keyboard shortcut to save you a step "Ctrl+Shift+Esc" then on "Processes" tab, select "firefox.exe" and use the "End Process" button. More thorough would be to right-click on the "firefox.exec" and choose "End Process Tree".
You would find firefox.exe in a Mozilla folder in your program files, but y0u would not want to delete it there, you would need to use the Control Panel which you have already identified and do it from there -- but generally you would not need to do that, and there is nothing in what you have posted to indicate that you should. But if you did do that, then don't let the install start Firefox for you as you would want to use you existing desktop icon or method of starting Firefox, and should decline having Firefox install start Firefox for you. When the install starts then invoke Firefox in your normal manner. This should eliminate problems of creating a new profile rather than using your old profile.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Iphoto hangs on start up so bad that it crashes other applications and the finder

    OK here goes.
I had several applications running and everything froze so badly that I had to reboot. I eventually worked out that the problem was iphoto. If I leave iphoto closed everything seems to work fine. When I launch iphoto the ap starts to open but no photos appear just a wheel which keeps going round. I left it for a bout an hour but no joy. It seems to mess everything else up including the finder.
I deleted the ap and all the pkg files as per another discussion and reinstalled but the problem is still there. I seemed to get a little further when iphoto said it had noticed some discrepencies and asked me if I wanted to repair. I said yes it did it and showed percentages up to 100% but then just hung again.
I started the ap again holding down the option key, created a new library, imported a couple of photos and it seems OK but when I switch back I know the problem will not have gone away.
I have time machine but I dont really want to go back as Im not sure how long the problem has been there.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Again, your point is? Do you think Apple (or Microsoft or Adobe or anyone) makes perfect software?
And you realise that about 99% of apps on the App Store are 3rd party apps, right?
How on earth can an extra tool be a bad thing?
iPhoto has tools to tackle some database damage. It can fix some problems. But sometimes the corruption is too serious. So, If those tools don't work: then restore from back up.
There. That's the Apple way. Fixed. Restoring from a known-good back up will fix pretty much anything.
However, not every one has a back up. Everyone should. Everyone should always wear a seat belt too. But they don't. They meant to but never got around to it...
So what then? Well no back up, you option is to recover the Master files from the Library, make a new one and start over from scratch. Lose all your edits, all your albums, keywords and so on. But at least you have a new uncorrupted database and your photos as imported from camera.
However, one guy noticed another way of doing this. He noticed that you could leverage the sharing system and make a new library but not lose as much data. If the main db has gone west, but the sharing system is intact, then with a bit of luck and his skill in scripting you get a new uncorrupted Library, preserve all your edits and albums and keywords.
Don't want to use it? Don't. But there's nothing wrong with using a third party app. It's not immoral. It's not an indictment of anything. It's just an opportunity.
