First beta prototype of e2publish

e2publish is a sophisticated AIR application that uses the Text Layout Framework.  I've just made the first beta prototype available of my website.
http://www.e2easy.co.cc/e2publish.html
An ambitious project such as this relies on the feedback of test users.  Comments, suggestions, recommendations, ideas, and bug reports.  Let me know what you think?
A video presentation about this project can be found here:-
http://e2easy.wordpress.com/2009/10/19/announcing-an-adobe-air-publish-application/
The most novel feature is way the text arranges itself to warp around the pictures, wherever they are placed on the page.

Thanks for feedback Richard.  Your comments are very useful for me.  And my replies are useful to me too - as they help me to revisit, rethink, and crystallise my ideas and vision for this project.
>I wanted to draw more boxes and connect them with arrows.
In layout mode, you can use the Layout drop-down menu.  It allows you to Create (add) new text boxes, Split an existing text box, or Remove a text box.  It's my fault you didn't see these - and I was already thinking that I should put some buttons next to the layout view, where users will notice them.  UI design is an iterative process.
There are three pre-set layouts.  One, Two, or Three columns.  I'm not sure about the same layout on every page?  Magazines don't tend to do this. On some pages, text boxes are arranged around images that feature more prominently than the text.
Soon, I'll add a feature to create text boxes that aren't connected to the flow.  With optional big quotation marks for pull quotes.
I was thinking of allowing the user to save layouts, so that they can then apply a saved layout to any page.
>Is the undo stack integrated?  The UndoManager is designed with the hope that other clients can use it and stack their own operations.
I already have my own undo manager class that I've been using and refining for years.  It works well with my own custom components. Unfortunately, Adobe's UndoManager assumes it runs the whole show.  This frustrated me.  It's a pity that it wasn't designed with adequate hooks to play second fiddle.  In the end, I devised workarounds, and implemented a scheme so that Adobe's UndoManager is controlled from my undo manager.
>It'd be nice if the ctrl-z and ctrl-y keys worked everywhere and not just over the TLF area.
I'll get around to it after Christmas, when I'll have access to a windows PC for testing.  Everything works as it should on a Mac.  I just need to implement naive PC menus.  They'll handle keyboard shortcuts properly, and channel everything through my undo manager.  (e2spreadsheet and e2vector also require this.)  Currently, the ability to do ctrl-Z or ctrl-Y inside a text box on a PC causes a problem.  Because it bypasses my own undo manager.
>The scrollbar doesn't indicate there are more pages or provide a way to switch pages - that's annoying.
I attempted to write this application prior to the Flash 10 player (before flash.text.engine), with my own textflow mechanism and TextFields.  (I actually made a request to Adobe for a "textflow" mechanism about six years ago! - at least we got there in the end).  TextFields just weren't powerful enough.  I battled against performance issues, and this page-by-page scheme was a compromise at the time to reduce computational complexity.  TextFlow seems powerful enough - I should go back to scrolling over the entire document - you're right.
>Not sure if your goal is to demonstrate knowledge of TLF and Flash, or to make some sort of word processor.
This is definitely a conversation I want to have.  This is the first prototype, warts-and-all.  My vision is more than just a word processor.  I want to create a publishing application capable of creating stylised and captivating e-magazine pages.   I wrote something on my blog yesterday, where I called it a potential tablet magazine 2.0 solution.  I made comparisons with "Web 2.0" that allowed non-technical users to collaborate write to the internet, not just read from it.  My vision is to allow enthusiasts to collaborate on their own magazines.  Not just read them.
So I definitely want to know what you think is missing that would make this more like a real word-processor?  I'm hoping that Squiggly will soon be integrated with the TLF, and I'll be able to put spell-checking in quite effortlessly.
Bear in mind that I'm working on this in my spare time.  This isn't Buzzword.  Nobody is throwing huge amounts of money at me to do this.  In fact, every day that I work on this, I'm losing money because I could have worked that day for one of my commercial Flex project clients.  So while I want to this project to aspire to a professional standard.  It might take a little longer - I still have my day job.

Anyone knows where to get full list of all release changes between first beta version and version 1.2? Even better if anyone has done such an upgrade before. Please advise time frame and points to note. Many thanks!

This is exactly the same problem I have had, despite down loading several times (just in case), and even using a different machine (again, just in case). Needless to say, the query I posted on the Apple Logic help site has not been responded to!
Fortunately, Logic Express still works but it would be nice to be running the latest (functioning) version

  • WIndows beta won't install / deinstall / repair after bookmark import crash

    All,
after installing the first beta on my (international) Windows XP system, Safari crashed when importing Bookmarks.
    It would not start thereafter.
I tried to de-install, which failed for some unnamed reason.
I now am unable to install beta 3.0.2, which aborts the installation process and instructs me to try later again.
Nothing, including none of the "repair" switches of msiexec, either removes the remains of the old Safari, nor allows me to install the new Safari.
Any help how I could force installation of the laters Beta, regardless of pre-requisites or checks?
    Greetings,
    - Thomas

    Hi Thomas,
Ths installer cleanup tool is not the best as depending on your user rights on the system and a few other factors it will only show a subset of the programs installed (as you've found).
In order to perform a full cleanup (detailed repair) of Safari you can try this from a command prompt:
    msiexec /fausmv {3F9EFA28-D2FE-44B7-8896-0B0FF8DF5517}
    or to remove completely use:
    msiexec /x {3F9EFA28-D2FE-44B7-8896-0B0FF8DF5517}
The top command tells Windows to Fix All files rewriting User files, Shortcuts, Machine files and rebuilding the Windows Installer Cache (the v option).
More detail can be found at Microsoft's website if you're interested: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314881
Feel free to post any error messages you may receive. It might also be a good idea to update to the latest version of Windows Installer (3.1 v2) from: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=84088
Having said all that, I cannot get Safari to even start once under Windows Vista ... It installs without event but when double clicked the disk does some whirring then the standard "Your application has crashed" dialog appears. Seems Apple are a long way off perfecting Safari on Vista.

  • Thai language support on Safari 3 beta

I just try Safari 3 beta for Windows. Its speed is impressed so far but big problem with Thai language.
    - Thai word break is OK.
    - Thai Tonal Marks and Vowels which display on the top of normal Thai character are still incorrect. They float improperly.
    - Text smoothing is not so impressed when display Thai language.
    Hope to see improvements.

Good to know. Arabic does not work properly either. And if one uses a Japanese system no Japanese text is visible.
I think Apple simply has left any support for foreign (non-English/non-European) languages beyond very basic unicode out of the first beta.

  • IOS 9 Beta 2

So, I installed iOS 9 Beta 2 last night. I had originally installed the first beta, but reverted back to iOS 8.4 as I couldn't cope with the ridiculous battery life! I'm happy to report that the battery life in iOS 9 Beta 2 is MUCH better. There are a few more new features too: 1. iOS will now temporarily delete apps to make room for the firmware upgrade. So, if you're running low on space, the phone will be able to remove a few apps, and then restore them once the new firmware is up and running. 2. There is now a 'News' toggle in the iCloud settings, although there is no News App yet. I'd presume that this would be included in Beta 3. 3. The Search function is much better, and now pulls information from a wide variety of sources and third party apps. You also have the option to toggle apps on/off in the search settings menu. 4. The Podcast Logo has been tweaked slightly (wow!). 5. The description for low power mode has been tweaked slightly (it still does the same thing, though). 6. Handoff has now appeared in the multitasking view. Basically, if you're doing something on your iPad/Macbook/iPhone etc. and want to continue where you left off on another device, this is how you do it. The Handoff tab appears as the first option in the multitasking view. I've not had much chance to have a proper play with the phone yet, but what seems most striking between this and the first beta is the battery performance which I'm very pleased about!

    Just another little battery update:
    11hrs 27mins off charge. And I'm at 82%.
    Very impressed
I have noticed a couple of little niggles however:
    1. The Twitter app does NOT play nicely with iOS 9. The buttons along the bottom do not respond and I quite often have to shut down the app and restart it to get it to work.
    2. The multitasking panes will sometimes freeze or stutter. This is something which I presume is to do with the new layout, and something which just needs a bit of a tweak.
Apart from that, all is well on the good ship iOS 9

  • Beta 2 Extension Key?

Is there an extension serial number for Flash Builder 4 Beta 2 that I can get if I own Flex 3?  The one I received for the first beta does not work.

After I installed the 60 day trial I recieved my beta 2 extention serial number. I'm having difficulties finding the gui for inserting the serial number. Please Advise. Thank you.

    Hi Sam,
First off, I wanted to say THANKS to the whole Bug Search team for their
continued hard work in making BST a great online tool!!
I wanted to add a couple of further observations on BST in addition to my
    buddy Paolo's initial comments (+5 "P")
    - Version choices in Communications Manager and Unity Connection are not honored.
For example, if I go through Voice & Unified> IP Telephony> Unified Communications
Platform> Communications manager> Cisco Unified Communications Manager Version 9.1
There will be 44,535 results (????) then I have to input 9.1 again in the "Releases" box and
I then receive the correct 754 results. So BST is not honoring the original choice of
Cisco Unified Communications Manager Version 9.1. This is the same for all versions as well
    as Unity Connection choices.
    - IP phone 8900 series bugs are actually all listed under the 6900 series (????). If you
don't know this trick you can never find any bugs related to the 8900 series. These are two distinct
product lines and the bugs should be sorted accordingly.
    Cheers!

  • Error 0x80248014 on Windows Update on Windows 10 Technical Preview Enterprise beta build 9926.

    Hi
As I download the new ISO and do a software Windows Updates.
I cannot seems to get any software updates at my end. Windows update cannot find any updates for Windows Defender.
My latest Windows 10 Technical Preview version 9926 cannot seems to find any software updates.
    I keep getting this error.0x80248014!
I keep getting this error since I have the first Beta Build 9841 and 9879. I did not have the download of 9860.
I wonder there is a missing Windows Update at the Control Panel.
I have to search all over the place where is the Windows Update??? The GUI is very confusing for a First Timer like me!
    See my screen capture.

    mrdbeta,
Click the Retry button > if you have a Windows defender Update available, it will show up on the list together with a new build such as 9935 Professional. (See my screenshot at the end of the post.)
The system will start installing and when it finishes, it will give you the same error message. That's OK. It shows the error message because it is unable to install the new build which is NOT applicable to
us, the general users. Those new builds, 9931, 9932, 9934, and lately 9935 are meant for MSFT only.
Click Advanced options > click View your updates history. Your most recent Windows Defender update should be listed. If yes, you are OK. Nothing to worry about.
MS is well aware of the mistake. They will get it fixed soon. Please read the excerpt below from Inside Hub......
Windows Insiders who have installed KB3035129 may see reports in the Settings app under Update & recovery that a new preview build is available. Attempts to download the new build result in Error 0x80246017.
KB3035129 included a code change which unintentionally had the side effect of changing targeting for builds, allowing builds that are exclusive to Microsoft employees to appear available. No new builds are available which are newer than 9926 at this point.
We will issue another update shortly to correct the issue and ensure that Windows Insiders are able to successfully get the next build which is made available to you. We apologize for the confusion and thank you for your continued participation
    and feedback.
***** In the web, there is a registry modification dealing with this issue. I would suggest that you just wait for MS to sort it out. If you want to try the registry hack, google for it. Use it at your own risk

  • Can't install beta 2 as a trial version

When I launch the installer, it goes to the Welcome screen. I click Accept. It goes to the Serial Number screen, but the "Install this product as a Trial" radio button is disabled. (See attachment) I had the first beta installed and uninstalled it before I tried to install the beta 2. I tried rebooting the computer and running the installer again. Same issue.
    Running:
    Windows XP SP3
    Dell Optiplex GX620
    3 GB RAM
I also have Flash Builder 4 beta 2 installed. That installed without any issues.

    serial number required!
Important: In order to activate the Flash Catalyst beta and use the product beyond the default 30-day trial, you will need the appropriate serial number:

  • Lightroom 4 Beta Initial Reactions

First: Congratulations to the team for the proposed changes.
Thanks also to the beautiful Julieanne Kost who, once again, has made such an excellent video series. She makes a difficult method of presentation look both simple and smooth - unlike many of the UTube videos. I am never sure whether the occasional errors are not deliberate to reassure and teach those, like myself, who are less adept. It certainly works for me.
I like the new Develop module layout and logic, particularly the adjustment brush new features. It is very helpful to reduce noise in the specific areas whiche one has just lightened. The added selection control within the histogram is welcome.
I would buy Lightroom 4 purely for the brighten facility in the Print module. I use Spyder software to co-ordinate my screens and printer profiles but have NEVER been able to produce prints that are not darkened, despite profile editing. I have always had to arificially lighten the pre-print photo. Now I apply +50 and bingo.
I am currently unsure about the soft proofing - more below.
Unfortunately there are serious snags in the beta program.
The Develop module is unstable, frequently unresponsive to keyboard, brush movements or slider changes. With two screens in use I get alternating black screens and history showing random non-selected actions. There is a slight improvement when using only one screen in that the black screens do not occur but blank ones do. Reaction can be painfully slow.
In soft proofing the Paper White border appears virulent yellow, while the 100% White is fine. I have never used soft proofing before and am therefore unsure of the benefits. I experimented with a few photos with some strange results. For instance a photo of a dandelion head with a range of yellows showed in printer profile, and slightly less marked in RGB, to be out of gamut until saturation had reduced all yellows to white. (An action known in the culinary world as blanching).
I have been involved with Lightroom since the first beta trials and am impressed as each new release gets better and better. I look forward to this one doing likewise.
    IntelI7 980X 12 GB RAM ATI Raseon HD 5800 Win 7 64 bit

If the dandelion yellow has to be reduced to white to get them into gamut by adjusting the saturation it seems obvious that adjusting the hue rather than the saturation may be needed.  Sometimes a mix of both is required.

  • IBM's WSAD 5.1.1 now shipping with beta JSF IDE

I'm installing WSAD 5.1.1 right now, and am reading the release notes. It ships with a beta version of "JavaServer Faces Tooling." The release notes discuss its limitations briefly, but I haven't seen anything outlining it's capabilities. I suspect this is an IBM implementation of Faces...anyone out there know more about this?
I'm very curious to take it for a test drive. IBM seems to have been much more quiet about their IDE plans for JSF, unlike Sun and Oracle. I know they've been working on it for quite a while now.
I suspect it wouldn't be wise to build anything serious with this at this point. With Faces at EA4 still, there's undoubtedly substantial changes in store for the spec before it goes final.
Has anybody had a chance to give this a try?
Incidently, WSAD 5.1.1 also includes the WebSphere 5.1 test environment.
Btw, I apologize for not posting links to info on it. I haven't seen anything on their website about 5.1.1 at all. It was just released today, so they must be a little behind on their website.

Just searched the web about this topic and found:

The announcement of WebSphere Studio 5.1.1 is anticipated for late November. This presentation will review the overall announcement and go into detail concerning the development tooling for JavaServer Faces (JSF) (JSR 127). JSF provides a developer interface framework for building J2EE applications and rendering the user interface in a Web browser. Using the Studio's JSF tooling, an example of accessing a database and rendering the results will be examined.
The JSF builder in Studio 5.1.1 allows quick development of robust Web Applications: * drag and drop of rich UI controls, for example, a data grid * validation either on the client or on the server * data objects to bind UI component to database access The administrative considerations for deployment of a JSF application will also be reviewed.
Chris Bosman-Clark is a WebSphere Platform Specialist working with IBM customers in the Central United States. Before IBM he was an application developer. At IBM he has held positions in software research, management and technical sales, He has worked with WebSphere since the first Beta and is actively engaged in understanding and explaining this Platform.
    Hope To See You There!!!

  • Cannot Update From iOS Beta 1 to Beta 2?

Well I've got the iOS Beta 1 Software on my iPod Touch 4th Generation and I know it's the first Beta. It's great but when I go to software update, it says it's up to date on iOS 6.0 without offering me an update to Beta 2. I am positive it's the first Beta. Is there any other way of checking which Beta I have just to be sure or another way i can update without restoring? In General Settings under about I get this for the version: 6.0 (10A5316k)
I'm pretty sure that is Beta 1. So how come I cannot update?!?
    Thank You for any help.

Pls. use the confidential iOS 6 beta forums, thanks.

  • WMP11 beta 2 reports outdated driver for Zen Mi

I've been running WMPb, primarily for playback on my desktop, since the first beta was released and have had no problems with either my Zen Micro or my Zen NX. I use Notmad for synching so problems there don't enter into it.
I installed WMP beta 2 a few days ago and now get an "outdated driver" message when my Zen Micro is connected. Have (re-)installed the September 3, 2005, driver, which appears to be the most recent available but still get the error message. Again because I use Notmad, I'm not sure this has any real impact; I haven't discovered any other than that the error dialog gets a little annoying. I'm throwing the experience out hear mostly as an FYI and for any follow-up others might have.
    Tim

Thanks. I'll consider it although since everything has worked to my satisfaction for a long time and, other than the error message, seems to continue to do so with .., which Creative continues to make available for download, I may decide just to li've with the error message rather than installing the PlaysForSure-enabled ver. 2.x firmware. Ignoring the error message seems, at this point, preferable to inviting problems with the firmware "upgrade", at least until other problems with ver. .., WMP and/or Notmad manifest themselves. (I'm kind of surprised my Micro doesn't already have the PlaysForSure firmware since I only got this from Creative, on a warranty exchange, in April.) Anyway, thanks for suggesting a solution. I can't tell from your message whether it's a documented fix to the error message or simply a WAG but I've downloaded the firmware and will hold it in reserve until I decide to use it, or not.
