First Book experience. ??

I sent in my order on Oct 13 05. Apple sent me a shipping notification on Oct 17 05. Now it is Nov 04 05 and no book.
They gave me a tracking number but I do not believe that USPS has picked the book up for shipping. This is what their tracking tells me:
The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper or shipping partner on October 17, 2005 to expect your package for mailing. This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date. Delivery status information will be provided if / when available. No further information is available for this item.
Anyone know what is going on?

Jack,
If I understand USPS correctly, they only update the information after it's actually delivered or if a delivery attempt has been made. It costs extra to track the package like UPS does.
My book came from California to Virginia in 4 days. Could it just be that it takes longer to get to Hawaii?
Good Luck. I hope you get it soon.

  • Problems creating my first book in iphoto

I'm just getting started with my first book - of my children's easter holiday. I'm having a few problems...
    1. I have typed text onto the bottom of some pages but when I print or preview, you can't see the text.
    2. Is there any way to alter the layout of the text - eg to centre it at the bottom of the page? I can only work out how to left and right align.
    3. Every time I want to print out a page or to preview it, the whole book has to be assembled again - this takes ages! Am I doing something wrong.
    4. I've read a couple of the other discussions and there are warnings about how you crop your photos and making them in the ration 4:3. Am I being naiive, but don't you get a book that looks like the thing you see in front of you? Doesn't lining up the photo in the 'frame' mean that the photo is cropped like that? (I'm using the large softcover crayon template)
I'd be very grateful for any tips from anyone with more experience as I don't have time to go through all the other messages (3 children under age 5 you see!)
    Helen

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
1 - Have you changed the font in the Setting pane for any of the text boxes? One possible reason you don't see the text is that you have more text in the box than it's designed to hold. Do you have any yellow triangles in the text boxes? What page layout are you using, one, two, three...?
2 - Right now there's no way to center text. If it's just one line you can add some spaces at the beginning to sort of center it.
3 - Unfortunately that's how iPhoto works. Do a Print to PDF and then you can preview the pdf file outside of iPhoto and print only those pages you want to check out.
4 - The reason for the suggested crop is that the frames on the pages are in that ratio. If your image is a different size ratio it will not fill the frame are completely or it will fill it in the smaller size and cut off some in the longer dimension if you try to snap it to the frame. Cropping beforehand just insures that you'll be able to get the entire image in the frame at the maximum size possible.

I have downloaded several books into ibooks.  Started reading one and closed it when I was done reading for the day.  Now I want to access other books and when I open ibooks it goes directly to that first book.  It does not give me the shelf to choose what book I want to read - goes directly to the first book. What can I do? Help please.

There should be a Library button on the top left. If not ap the middle of the screen to get it to appear.

  • My first book

I am starting my first book and iPhoto has a row of pictures at the top but it doesn't have all my pictures.  How do I get it to put all or maybe change to another event along the top bar?

Try drag/drop from the album/event your wish to use.
And/or select 'Photos' bottom right, then choose your source in 'Show:' top right.

  • Two ipads/One Apple ID - don't want second to see first books and emails. Suggestions?

Two ipads/One Apple ID - don't want second to see first books and emails. Suggestions?

If you don't want them to have access to the same books and other purchased media, they would need to be signed into a different Apple ID in Settings>iTunes & App Store.  If you don't want them to see the same iCloud email, they would need to be signed into different iCloud accounts with different IDs, or have Mail turned off on one of them in Settings>iCloud.  If you want to migrate one of them to a different iCloud account to accomplish this, reply back and I'll explain how to do this.

  • I downloaded my first book on iBooks and says its downloaded but its not there

I downloaded my first book on iBooks and it says its downloaded but its not in my library.

Did you check on the device you downloaded it on?  Did you actually purchase and download the book on your iPad?  If so, did you check in the iBooks app?  If you downloaded the book on iTunes, did you sync your iPad using iTunes and then check the iBooks app?
You did purchase the iBook at the Apple iBook Store, right?

  • I use podcasts all the time but downloaded my first books from the istore this morning. how do I get them to my ipod?

I use podcasts all the time but downloaded my first books from the istore this morning, I can't get them synced onto my ipod. What am I doing wrong?

the audiobooks I purchased show up in itunes under books and under purchased items but i cannot make them sync to my ipod. I followed your directions but it did not help. I have drag and dropped to a playlist which shows up on itunes but not on my ipod even after repeated syncs. when I try to drag and drop to the books or audiobooks in the itunes list it gives me the NO symbol.

  • Slow name completion on any but first book in selected list

Just upgraded WA App (web) piece to HP3. All other agents, etc. on HP2. This was done because we're having WA agent connectivity issues (known issue apparently), plus we run BES and RIM has not tested HP3 yet (so they say).
Anyway... prior to HP3 patching, we had to type first name (space) and then first initial for name to complete. This seems to have been corrected in HP3, as I now can down arrow through list after typing part of first name.
Problem is, while it quickly searches/lists whatever happens to be in the first book in search order, the other books take 30-60 seconds to 'wake up' so I can scroll through.
    Any way to correct/speed up?
    thanks

  • Ordered First Books

I ordered my first large hardcover books. The seemed to be printed in one day and shipped the next. I'm very interested in seeing the quality. I have scanned the threads and can't see too much feedback on quality. As soon as I get mine I'll post my thoughts. One odd thing occurred with the second order. It got canceled for some reason. I didn't do it but for some reason the folks at Apple seemed to think it wasn't worth printing perhaps they are right but i think i should be the judge of that... I just reordered it and this time it seems to have stuck.

I second your opinion on the professional quality of the Aperture books.
I use them for sample books for clients to browse, just to get ideas and see samples. While I do offer the Aperture books, I don't push them. I rather see them purchase a professional quality book from Asuka Books.
For real professional quaility books look at Asuka Books. They are very stunning. You create each page layout in CS2 with their templates. The books are significantly more expensive than the cheapo Aperture ones, but inline with other professional level providers of flush albums and books.
The range of sizes, aspect ratios, materials, and binding options allow you to get creative with what you can offer as final output to your clients.
To see a price list you must apply for membership. You receive your first book at half price.. use this for a sample book.
Asuka takes 4-6 weeks to complete the books as well.
BTW, I do not work for Asuka Books... I am waiting for my sample book

  • First book up and away, the Australia experience

I don't wish to give the impression that this is the first iBook to appear on iTunes from Australia, because it certainly isn't. But thought putting Australia in the title of this post might help others in Australia trying to do the same.
A book I created using iBA on behalf of a client has just been placed on the store (8 stores). As this is my first ebook ever it's an occasion for me. My client had a few hurdles to jump, given that he's an Australia-based self publisher who'd never been involved in this sort of thing before. He had to get an EIN (done, over phone), then, as we discovered late in the process, an Australian Business Number and apply for Australian Goods and Services Tax collection status.
I uploaded the book package on Wednesday 08Aug, from the client's home while we both went through the process of trying to find our way through the maze of unfamiliar terminology which we faced. At the time of upload, the client still did not have a contract with Apple, due to misunderstandings and cryptic messages while trying to fill in the various forms. We were sorting these problems out together as we worked our way through the system, using my MacBook Pro. My first upload was unsatisfactory and I received a strangely worded ticket the following day informing me of this.
Eventually I figured out the problem: I'd inadvertently uploaded the sample book into the space provided for the real book (this is easy to do, so be careful). My second upload resulted in no message from Apple, just removal of the ticket and visibility of the book as an uploaded asset on iTunes Connect. It took several days for my client to arrange the final bits and pieces to clinch the Apple contract and he informed me yesterday that he'd got the necessaries and had submitted them to Apple. Just out of curiosity an hour or so ago I checked through iTunes Connect and blow me down, there it was "On 8 stores".

    On to the next book!

    G'day Michi
Nice weather we're having right now, eh?
    Yep, pretty bloody nice!
I must say I was amazed to find that I knew something about iBA that you didn't.
I only know those bits of IBA that I've actually used. For example, I don't know anything at all about 3-D widgets because I haven't used them. But thanks anyway!
Yes, as others have mentioned, I illustrated the Glossary, which is an amazing improvement over the old style of Glossary. I had read somewhere that images could be included in the Glossary and just dragged and dropped from Finder and this worked first time, for me, although sometimes iBA seemed unwilling to accept but eventually it capitulated. I don't know why iBA does this and I've found it quite frequently being unwilling to accept a dragged and dropped image, including directly into pages. Mostly I drag from iPhoto and I'm unsure whether the problem is iPhoto or iBA, or perhaps the amount of RAM at only 4gb. Yet often it works easily and quickly. Puzzling!
It's weird. I haven't had a chance yet to get back to this and experiment. From memory, the images I tried with were 1024x768. I guess it's possible that image size has something to do with it. How large were your images?
The amount of RAM in your machine won't affect functionality, but it will affect speed. For memory-hungry applications, such as iPhoto, IBA, iMovie, Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver, and so on, you are going to be a lot happier with 8GB. Heck, while you are at it, make it 16GB. Memory is ridiculously cheap right now. I just bought 16GB of very fast (2.1GHz) memory for $160!
After upgrading memory, consider using a solid state disk. That's the biggest bang for the buck you can get in terms of performance improvement (but you will need to physically install it, and re-install the OS).
Thanks for all of the help you've unwittingly provided over the last six months through this community.
My pleasure. Share and enjoy! When I started, I learned a lot in this forum from other people who knew more than me, and I continue to learn here (such as when it comes to adding pictures to glossary entries )
    Michi.

  • My first book from Aperture

I was curious about the book feature in Aperture and decided to give it a try. My previous experience with books is with WHCC, so I will use them as a comparison.
It was extremely easy to make the book. Apple designed this process very well and it is easy to go from book view to edit mode and back. It is also easy to change page layouts, swap pictures, etc. To create a book from WHCC, you must download a template from their website and make it yourself in Photoshop. This is much less user friendly.
The pricing was fair for what you get. I ordered the 8.5x11 20 page softcover book for $20. I can't remember the last time I paid sales tax for an online purchase, but Apple charged it. Shipping was $6 which I also found to be fairly expensive. I ordered the book on 9/24, got shipping notification on 9/28, and received it on 10/2. This is a little slow for my tastes, but I wasn't ordering at the last minute so it didn't really matter. WHCC processes all orders the same day, includes shipping in the (higher) tax-free price, and gets it to your door in 2 days. That is a much more satisfying experience.
I was completely satisfied with image quality. The images in the book were just as I saw them on the screen. Color reproduction was accurate. The book was of family photos that I will be giving away to a family member. It was more than adequate for this purpose. If I were to rate the print quality of WHCC products at 10, this book from Apple would come in at a 9.
This was a good first experience for me. I won't stop using WHCC because I love the quality of their products, but I certainly see myself creating more books in Aperture.

Thank you for posting about the books.
I placed an order for a book yesterday (also using Aperture 2.1) and am expecting it any day now. I'm happy to hear things went well.
I hope I will be able to post a similar entry as yours soon (i.e. happy customer).

  • First Calendar experience

My first experience with Calendar was that the program wasn't ready yet and that it was unstable.Yesterday, after several learning attempts and two crashes, I finally produced a Caledar 2006 and sent it to Apple for printing.
I couldn't use pictures smaller than 1MB because they had warning about printing poorly even if they were 800KB. When I wanted to put two pictures in one page I had to be careful to crop them properly so they would show what I wanted. The window wouldn't adjust the pictures to fit. For unknown reason some pictures big enough wouldn't be accepted and only white window appeared.
Are there some competitive Calendar publishers which would use pictures from iPhoto? $20 for a Calendar 10x8 is pretty steep. We'll see how's the quality of the print.

If Keith's suggestion doesn't work try this:
Backup the library and launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #1, #2 and #6.

  • Trying to create my first book using Apple pre-dos .. is there a discussion about this?

I'm attempting to use the 'make a book' feature for the first time -- is there a discussion going on somewhere re: details of this application?
My first question is - can I save a book and complete it over time? (Oh, and it looks like I may have just answered that question myself, since I see that projects appear in the source list - I just can't seem to find a 'save' command anywhere .. guess I'll just try the hotkey and trust that either that works or that Apple does an autosave) ..
Then I'm wondering about margins -- any hope of bleeding a page off the margins?
And format - I'd love to make boardbooks (this first one can have paper pages) but don't see that option. However, there is a reference to a "small" book although I don't have that option on my 'create a book' screen ..
Thanks ..  (hope I can find my way back here again ..)

iPhoto behaves like a database -all changes are immediate and will take effect automatically without saving.
So, you can quit iPhoto and continue to work on your book later.

What is your iPhoto version? The available book templates change d between the versions.
