First Development-Easy?

I apologize if this isn't the appropriate board for this. I have never developed software for anything. I know HTML, CSS, XHTML, Actionscript, PHP and MySQL. I am putting together a portfolio and am considering trying to develop my portfolio into an iPhone app to allow clients to download. Having never developed anything, would it be easy enough to figure out, or would it not be worth the time? Note, the portfolio as of now includes photos, videos, websites, and flash SWF files. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

It's an interesting thought although you will have issues. First some of your content will not work on the iPhone. Flash is not available. Movies would need to be in a format that the iPhone would do. Your biggest issue would be how you would expect to get this iPhone app to your clients. It would have to be in the App Store, available to everyone. This requires approval by Apple for your app. There is no guarantee that an app that just sells your skills to potential clients is one that Apple will allow.
If you want to write an iPhone app you should be writing one that is of use to people other than advertising yourself and include that in your portfolio, which would be available on the web. If you want, you could perhaps tailor your profile's web site so that it is more appropriate for viewing in Safari on the iPhone, realising the limitations of Mobile Safari. Highlight on your web site that there is a mobile version available. This would show you know how to build a mobile web site. You should check out <https://developer.apple.com/webapps/>. It may require free registration to view.

  • Flash Developement (easier to maintain)

Hi guys, I have several questions in which are not quite
answered in my searches. I am a web designer for a marketing firm.
Recently I was asked to create a flash animation for one of our
departments. As it turned out, they liked it too much. They are
taking it to a show, but now they are having all of the departments
use it. I am the only one in the company that has intermediate
    knowledge of flash.
Anyways, with this animation and all the departments that
will be using it as a standard, each will want to have changes
according to the department. Unfortunately, the way the animation
is set up, it would require me to basically re-animate each frame
because some frames are using distort or shaping. Then most of the
rest is simply swaping instances of videos and other images, though
they might want to add more videos to the original which in turn
would force me to make yet another animation to compensate for the
    new videos.
My supervisor is now also asking me to find an easier way to
maintain the animation for other future changes and uses.
Basically, my first question is where can I find info and tutorials
on creating components and so forth, programming my flash file to
simply switch instances of images with same positioning, shapes,
and size. This also goes with adding videos and new animations just
to maintain it, like drag and drop using containers or something.
Maybe, something like using a text file that can swap instances of
images and so forth. I just don't know where to start.
I've seen a source file of JW FLV MEDIA PLAYER. He seems to
use containers. Where can I find info on how to create them, and
program them to do what it needs? If successful, I can foresee the
company asking me to do the same with their main web product so
they can save money from using a third party tool.
My second question is not so technical as developement. I've
been trying to export my movie to .avi and .mov but neither works.
I use CS3, and the only possible explanation I can think of in why
they don't work is because I only have one frame in the scene. I'm
using movie clips in the main scene. I've tried third party tools
for swf to video conversions, but most lose quality in both image
and animation. The best I've found was Sothink's swf to video
encoder. But is there another way around using 3rd party tools for
file conversion or export? I've tried screen capturing tools as
well, but I get the same poor quality, even after I try to improve
the quality back by another conversion.
Sorry for the long stories, just makeing sure there's enough
information there to understand what I'm talking about and so
forth. Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for
your time in reading. I look forward to hearing some answers.

  • Enterprise App Development, easy as Core Data?

I took Apple's Core Data tutorial and loved it. The ease of creating machine-local database interfaces similiar to what I've done in FileMaker over the years is awesome!
However, I'm ultimately wanting to create a database back-end that sits on a server in the closet and a front-end made in xCode that could be installed on client computers around our office. I don't want to make a web app with a browser interface. I want to make a rich desktop interface for accessing our data.
Is there a way to do this as elegantly and painlessly as Core Data? I've read about WebObjects and EOF but can't get a definitive sense that it is what I'm looking for. WebObjects is so "web"-centric that I can't tell if I can develop a desktop app using it.
    Anyone know what I need?

    Hi Ryan,
I've read your three threads and have been idly thinking about them for a couple of days. I know nothing about this really so forgive the musings and thoughts. I read this one first so I chose it to reply to.
When I first read it I initially thought "what's stopping you use CoreData?". It certainly easy enough to alter the location of the data file (and the datatype it's saved as), so presumably it would be possible to locate the data on an external volume somewhere and incorporate some form of mounting and error checking routines before the file is committed.
Then I realised the obvious problem with this relative to what you're actually trying to achieve; namely multiple access by multiple people on various machines, presumably often at the same times. How do you manage simultaneous concurrent access to the same file? I started to then think that this still might be possible with CoreData but by taking a slightly different view. Perhaps implement the application as a desktop app that uses it's own data file on a local volume (probably the normal location ~/Library/Application Support/xxx) to keep changes separate from other users working at the same time and then write other code that manages synchronising with the main file(s) on the server volume. Perhaps using a versioning system like svn for this part. The app could then checkout the master datastore from the server, alter it, save it locally and then when the session's over call the versioning system to update and compare the changes.
This might work if the situation fits but there's obviously large problems with users working on differing data in realtime and other such clumsiness.
On the other hand, I think Cocoa can be used in the manner you want using NSConnection and Distributed Objects. Have a look at this tutorial at CocoaDevCentral about writing a client/server app. It also links to this article at Stepwise which also may be of some use. A must read would also be Apple's docs on the topic of Distributed Objects which are here.
A well known app that offers multiple simultaneous user access to the same file is SubEthaEdit which might also be worth a look.
I'm sorry I can't be any more help and hopefully someone more knowledgeable than I will chime in with better observations/solutions, but no matter which way you choose to approach the problem I think there's going to be some serious coding involved.

  • Hi there! First post (easy one I hope)

    Hey Archers!
First time on the forums New to Arch and Linux as a whole--loving it though!
Just having one issue that's really giving me a headache: whenever I open a window in GNOME the greater portion of the window spawns above the top panel making it difficult to view/move.  Just wondering if there's a way to change to default spawn location of a window.  I tried the window behavior under system settings but I couldn't find any relevant options.
Does that make sense? Let me know if you need clarification.  Probably a silly question, but I figured the combined genius of the forums would spare me some tears.
    Thanks!

Please post a descriptive title. And do your own searching first, Arch encourages lots of DIY, not asking other people to do it for you. Closing.

  • Full production refresh to development systems and Charm?

    Hi SDN Community,
Where I work we have a policy of refreshing the development systems (ECC, CRM, APO, BI, SRM) on an annual basis with full production system data, HR data is subsequently wiped clean from the development system.
For each of our systems we have a development system, a QA system and a production system.
The decision to do these full refreshes was taken to ensure that developers and configurers can do decent testing in the Dev environments - prior to transporting to our QA system - to ensure that we have a reasonably stable QA system. Prior to the refreshes - QA was considered too unstable by our business to be used as a good test platform - the full D refreshes solved this problem.
We have recently installed SAP Charm (Change request management) which is a solution manager based product that manages the transportation of objects in change requests - attached to maintenance cycles.
During our first development system refresh we discovered that all open Charm projects (maintenance cycles) were placed into an unuseable status due to the refresh. This means we had to rebuild all of the Charm projects after the refresh - which took a considerable amount of time + resources and delayed project work. We don't want to be in this situation again for our next refresh.
SAPs response to us has been that they have no other customer that does full Development system refreshes - and also has Charm. I wonder if this is accurate, I think what SAP are saying is that they don't have many Charm customers... Is refreshing Development so uncommon?
We are considering products like SAPs TDMS - and alternatives (eg gold client) - but most of these appear a little immature - for refreshing complex system landscapes - such as ours and keeping everything in synch after the refresh.
    My questions to SDN -
What do you do - do you do full refreshes to your D systems?
If not - what are the arguments against refreshing D systems (is this considered bad practice)?
Are there any other Charm customers out there in a similar situation to us?
How do you manage the stability of your QA environments and stop the transport into QA systems of untested changes - if your D systems are not similar to you production system
(note we have some 300 active users in just our ECC development system)?
Any suggestions / recommendations as to how to best proceed would be greatly appreciated.
    many thanks in advance,
    Julian Phillips
Edited by: Julian Phillips on Nov 11, 2008 2:33 PM

    Thanks Naushad for your reply,
I wonder if D refreshes are less common - more due to the additional hardware costs incurred (disk space needed to store full production data is usually pretty large) to do them - than due to avoiding disrupting development - probably a bit of both.
I did not mention this - but in our refresh we do reimport all transports that we open prior to the refresh - which used to solve our problems - in terms of restoring active changes - but with SAPs Charm system - this approach does not work as the Charm projects are left in an inconsistent status.
We are now leaning towards introducing a 4th set of systems into our landscape - so that we have the following platforms:
Development --->  Pre QA  ---> QA  ---> Production
This approach will allow us to keep both the Pre QA and QA systems refreshed every 6 months or so - and our new Dev system - we will refresh very infrequently (every 5 years perhaps) if at all. We will tie the Charm system to our new development - and this system will then not be impacted by refreshes. This approach means additional hardware cost - but as it happens we have a few spare boxes - so this maybe our best bet.
The core reason for our refresh is so that we will be able to preserve the stability of our QA test platform - which for us is the critical factor here. If QA has poorly tested work in it - we run a higher risk of disrupting other testing and also of this poorly tested work reaching production.
When we used to have a development system as you described and just the single QA box - we experienced frequent instability in our QA box - due to poorly tested working reaching it - and this delayed numerous projects.
Does anyone else have a 4 box setup like this? Anyone else encountered this on an SAP project anywhere? Pros / Cons of this approach?

  • ANNOUNCE: Visual J2EE Development Environment Released

Roaming Media announces a public beta release of Roaming Studio 1.0.
Roaming Studio is a comprehensive software development environment that
fully supports pattern-driven design, assembly and deployment of Java™ 2
Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE™) applications. It simplifies and
accelerates the delivery of these enterprise applications by providing
visual representations of components and assemblies. It takes care of
the dirty work by generating and maintaining source code while you
concentrate on architectural and business level details.
At the same time, Roaming Studio allows you to work at the source code
level if you wish. Its unique IntelliSynch technology watches you as you
work and provides real-time synchronization with the visual
    representations.
Roaming Studio is also one of the first development tools to support the
development and realization of software patterns. This powerful feature
allows architects to create reusable designs that define objects and
their interactions. These designs may then be used to automate the
creation of J2EE components and application assemblies. The current
support for patterns in Roaming Studio is the beginning of a
revolutionary new way of creating applications via automated
    pattern-driven development and reusable components.
Roaming Studio integrates with popular IDEs and supports any
    J2EE-compliant application server.
You can download Roaming Studio at:

  • ChaRM:Parallel Developement

    Hi Team,
I having the requirement like this. Currently we are having following system landscapes:
    ECC system landscape: ED1--EQ1-EP1
    APO system landscape: AD1-->AQ1->AP1
I am doing the MRP related configuration settings, (for example we consider object X) in ED1 & imported the transport into EQ1.
I am also doing the configuration settings in AD1 in the  same object X  (related to MRP related). if i import this transport request in AQ1, the changes which i have done EQ1 will get erased / affected which affects the business.
In such cases, if the consultant tries to modify the same object in the two different landscape (parallel development) which affects business process, the system should alert or block the second developemt till the first developement hits the production environment. How to activate this functioanlity in ChaRM?
Is it possible to achieve thro customization synchronizatiion? What is the main functionality of customization synchronizatiion?

    Hi Khalil,
I have all the necessary settings in Sol Man & in satellite system as well.
Executed the ChaRM serveices in SE38 "/TMWFLOW/CONFIG_SERVICES"
Conflict Analysis: Cross-Project, Cross-Client (Cross system object lock active)
    Object Reporting Active
    Modification checks active
All the systems are i GREEN color in t.code "/n/tmwflow/cmsconf"
SCC4 settings in satellite systems are perfect. (Client Roles been set as Customizing,TEST & PRD). Apart from client role settings in SCC4, should i need do some other settings in SCC4 in the respective system?
Executed the report in satellite systems "TMW_CONTROL_PROJECT_LOCK" & activated the project lock in DEV,QA & PRD.
SMSY_SETUP is running properly in Sol Man.
But still the CSOL is NOT working Properly.
I have checked the CSOL scenario as below:
In DEV (satellite system), i have changed the configuration settings & stored in transport request & released the transport request thro Sol Man. Now i could able to create the one more transport request to the same customizing object in DEV (satelite system). I was expecting the error / warning message saying that, "Object already locked" (since the first tranport request is not reached production).
    Is my understanding correct?

  • Agile Development in an SAP Landscape

My team is looking to shift from a 'regular', waterfall-type development methodology which delivers 2 large functional releases per year to a more flexible, nimble project based approach based on Agile Development methodologies.
The goal is to be able to treat each project independently from a resource and scheduling perspective - so multiple projects could be underway at any one time but each one potentially running on a different time line.  Of course, life-cycle support for the production environment would be on-going at the same time.
The problem we face is defining an SAP system landscape that supports this approach and that allows for the management of the inevitable conflicts that will arise when different projects require changes to the same development object.
I'm interested to hear feedback from anyone who has implemented an Agile Development approach within an SAP environment ( successfully or not ! ) as well as ideas for what a  possible Agile SAP landscape could look like.
    Thanks
    Tim

Our team has been adopting some agile practices and have seen some great benefits. We have not embraced one methodology entirely (XP, Scrum, etc.).  We're taking bits and pieces that make sense in our environment and adopting them incrementally.
Here's an example of some of the things that we're doing:
    1.  Chunking out development tasks.  Basically working with the requirements or functionality that we know and not waiting until every possible scenario is clearly (or not so clearly) defined.  We try to get stakeholders (business users and BPx's) looking at our programs and prototypes often to ensure that we're on the right track.  This chunking out of tasks has been a benefit in that it is easier to manage (from a manager and developer perspective) and it gives us clearly definable goals for what we're shooting for in a fixed time frame (1 week).  We talk individually every day (short spinarounds) to ensure that we're on track and identify any potential risks.
    2.  Modeling of requirements.  This proves extremely valuable to our developers, functional folks, and business users.  This usually involves grabbing a couple of folks and whiteboarding ideas to ensure that everybody has a clear understanding of what is going on.  I will admit that this  we certainly don't do it as much as we should, but it's something that we're working on doing as much as we can.
    3.  Frequent builds/migration.  We currently transport released changes to test every 30 minutes in the ABAP stack.  This allows us as developers to move on to the next task and allows our testers a quicker turnaround of bug fixes and new functionality.  We move production code twice a week.  For the JAVA side, we do a "JIT" build/deployment.  As fixes need to be migrated, we check in/build and deploy.  Since the NWDI is still new to us, we haven't done much investigation on automating this process, but I imagine that we will do so in the future.
One of the challenges that we ran into was thinking that the code was the only thing that matters (which you might get from some agile camps).  Just because you're modeling and documenting (just enough documentation), does not mean that you're not "agile".  You don't throw out design and analysis just so you can sit down and write code to have something to show somebody.  The collaboration and clarity that agile practices provide is one of the keys to making it successful.
We started implementing some of these practices in the development group about 8 months ago and since then we've seen some interest/adoption in our project management group and functional teams.  I would imagine that we'll continue to pick and choose practices that work for us...try some out, see what happens, adapt, evolve, etc.  So far so good in my opinion.  From a managment perspective, it really has made it easy to know what people are working on and how productive we can be as a group.  From a developer's perspective, it makes development easier and more fun when you have a clear target in front of you and you can throw out ideas in a modeling session.  From the end user perspective, they seem to like that we can roll out production ready functionality in an incremental way so they don't have to wait 6 months to get something that they can see and use.  From my limited experience, it seems to be a much better way to develop applications.

  • Oracle Development - initial platforms?

Can anyone clarify which platform Oracle initially develops it's software on and then ports to other platforms.
We're being pushed by one of our clients to utilise Wintel/Linux as they state that this is the platform Oracle firstly develops their software on and then ports to other platforms.
Can anyone confirm or deny this?
    Thanks in advance
    Pete.

Do you mean Wintel? Or Lintel (i.e. Linux on Intel chips)?
Certainly I know Linux is very popular inside Oracle since someone did the maths on the cost of licenses and performance.
I suspect RAC probably was developed on Lintel precisely because it was aimed at an architecure of disposable blade servers, and Lintel provides the best cost base for such an approach.
Of course, the question then becomes which flavour of Linux do Oracle use? I know they promote both RHEL and SUSE at the install fests.
    Cheers, APC

  • J2EE development methodology

    Hi,
I am preparing a proposal to push J2EE as our enterprise application standard. I don't know what methodology we should use to develop J2EE application, it seems that water-fall is not a good idea here.
Could anybody help? Thanks in advance.

Here is the methodology I used on my latest project (it turned out that by focussing on the first development as waterfall we could produce a set of reusable beans that allow us to now select the most appropriate methodology for future developments).
We focussed on one particular application, used UML to capture the design and then built individual components using a waterfall method.
The design divided the components into a reusable layer, and an application specific layer (effectively a layer that provided various services, and a layer that co-ordinated those services together)
We have effectively built other applications now by using a strong design to identify functionality that can be reused (from the service layer) and functionality required in the application specific layer. Any new service layer components can be built using the most appropriate methodology.
Building a client and the application specific layer we have done using both classical waterfall and RAD approaches, depending upon which is most appropriate. Development times are obviously reduced since we have a pool of service layer bean functionality.

  • Need help on JSF Development

    Hi guys,
I've been used to create web applications by using JSP and Servlet technologies as well as NetBeans 5.5 for business classes development and Dreamwaver for visual web pages development.
So far so good, however, from now on, due to customer requirements, some new small projects must be created by using JSF technologies.
I've already read both JavaServer Faces in Action book from cover to cover and J2EE 1.4 Tutorial chapters which covers JSF, so that I could gain a good understanding and knowledge regarding commmon things needed to start developing by using JSF.
The problem which I need your help guys is regarding which tools you "JSF Developers" use to create your web applications.
Althrough Dreamwaver is a great tool for visual html formatting and I'm very used to, I found very painful to replace the common html tags by the jsf tags right after the page layout is done.
I would like to include such jsf tags in the first time I design the web page layout instead of first develop the page layout and then replace the html tags.
Maybe Facelets could help but I have no knowledge on how to use it. Could you please clarify ?
Trying to solve such problem, I gave a try to NetBeans Visual WEB Pack but I found it poorer than Dreamwaver for page layout design.
What you guys have been using to create your JSF applications.
Could you please give me some light on this ?

  • Track Concept - What do I do with it once finished developing 1st stage?

    Hello,
Suppose I have finished a lifecycle of a certain track, the Software Component I developed is confirmed at the last tab of the track at the production environment in its 1st version.
My question is: What do I do with the track now? Do I delete it? And what do I do if I would like to make changes at the developed SC? Do I open new track for it or can I always use the old track for another lifecycle of the SC, this way it will use as a constant track for this SC next versions?
