  • Flash Font Problems

    I'm using Flash CS4 and have wasted--over the course of the past 18 months--at least three days of work time trying, in vain, to make Flash fonts work completely consistently.
    Problems: 1) Fonts don't appear after FontAgent activation (must copy to Adobe/Fonts folder), 2) Bits of styled type totally disappear on compile (haven't figured this one out and try to avoid certain faces), 3) and most recently, totally bizarre font display (looks like egg thrown against the wall), which, despite verifying the fonts, replacing them (even though they checked out fine), cleaning the font caches (with Font Finagler, nee Font Cache Cleaner), doing a million restarts and praying, are still screwed up.
    One possible common thread is that these seems to be OpenType fonts. But the errors are totally inconsistent -- for example, the font with #3 above had worked fine for nearly a year before becoming hopelessly destroyed in the past five hours, and only *some* characters in #2 disappear.
    I'm posting here mostly out of frustration, since previous posts on similar issues haven't yielded decent (working) solutions and Googling these problems (ad nauseam) mostly shows people using either different font managers (or none at all) or working with dynamic text. (Mine is static text.)
    But perhaps someone has a definitive resource/recipe for troubleshooting and solving these font problems?
    Or perhaps someone could shed some light on why Adobe uses separate font folders and caches?

    OK, well! It seems that I'm **not** crazy. I just read in TidBITS today that what I saw last week was related to a bug in Mac OS X 10.6.7, which apparently fixed some font security problems, but broke something having to do with OpenType fonts. I guess I made the mistake of being on the bleeding edge.
    http://db.tidbits.com/article/12078
    I stick by my general complaint, however. Adobe or some good member of the community should create a definitive resource for understanding and solving font problems in Flash. I've spent a lot of time looking for answers to my questions in Adobe help docs, in questions posted on these forums, and Googling for solutions -- and have seen many, many others expressing my same frustration of wasted time and so-so answers. Since fonts are critical to pretty much every Flash project, this should be information that is **easy** to find.

  • Blurry flash fonts under Firefox 6

    I have problem accessing a streaming website ( http://www.hkadr.com/stream.php ) that shows flash fonts. OK no problem with FF5, Chrome, IE.
    For FF6, it is OK if I disable Aero Theme (transparent mode). Or, it is OK also if I turn the monitor resolution to 16 bit high color (from the default setting of 32 bit true color)
    I have tried: disabling hardware acceleration, reset Cleartype text, upgrading the graphic card driver to the latest version - all cannot help FF6 read the problematic flash font website clearly.
    My system is Win7 64 bit, AMD 6670 graphic card, CPU Q9550S, and I am running 2 monitors of 1920x1080 under 32 bit true color.
    I read from another help thread that FF7 may have solved this, but I still cannot read the website under FF7.
    Anyone can help please ?

  • Font showing in photoshop font list but not showing in the flash font list

    Hi,
    I have some issues with fonts. I am using a Mac OS X and i have installed the fonts into font book.
    The installed fonts are showing up in my Photoshop CS3 font list but are missing from my Flash CS3 and CS4 font lists.
    I am using .otf fonts.
    Any help will be really appreciated .
    Thanks,

    Jude,
    I don't know what the problem may be, sorry.
    Since the fonts are not from Adobe, you'll have to either contact the foundry from which you've licensed them or post this issue on the Flash forum at http://forums.adobe.com/community/flash/flash_general

  • FLASH FONT UnicodeRange

    Hello,
    I'm recently trying to develop a flash website that requires Russian, Polish and Korean fonts.
    There are two movie clips. One is directly drawn in flash IDE the other one is created through a class file. In the one drawn directly in IDE I define the text field font in properties panel linking to a font shared in library. I define that all characters must be embedded, but it still doesn’t work.
    On the movie clip created through a class file I is this code:
    [Embed(source = 'fonts/YanoneKaffeesatz/YanoneKaffeesatz-Light.ttf', fontFamily = "light", fontWeight="light", advancedAntiAliasing="true", mimeType="application/x-font-truetype",  unicodeRange="U+0000-U+000c,U+0013-U+007f,U+0127-U+024f,U+0558-U+02db,U+0562-U+03a1,U+057 9-U+03a9,U+0586-U+03c1,U+0603-U+03c9,U+0610-U+044f,U+0674-U+11f9,U+0924-U+1eff,U+1180-U+20 6f,U+1292-U+2084,U+1296-U+20cf,U+1344-U+2183,U+1476-U+2199,U+1486-U+2203,U+1488-U+2208,U+1 490-U+221e,U+1492-U+222c,U+1498-U+2235,U+1500-U+223d,U+1502-U+2261,U+1504-U+2265,U+1506-U+ 226b,U+1508-U+2283,U+1510-U+2287,U+1512-U+246e,U+1527-U+2482,U+1542-U+24b5,U+1568-U+24e9,U +1594-U+2503,U+1598-U+2549,U+1660-U+25a1,U+1662-U+25a9,U+1669-U+25b3,U+1671-U+25b7,U+1673- U+25bd,U+1675-U+25c1,U+1677-U+25c8,U+1680-U+25d1,U+1684-U+2606,U+1686-U+260f,U+1688-U+2661 ,U+1690-U+2665,U+1693-U+266a,U+1697-U+266d,U+1699-U+303f,U+1763-U+318e,U+1857-U+321c,U+188 6-U+327b,U+1914-U+3384,U+1919-U+33ca,U+1986-U+33d0,U+1988-U+33dd,U+1991-U+d7a3,U+13163-U+f f60,U+13259-U+ffe3,U+ffe5-U+ffe6" )]

    It looks like only polish characters are not inlcuded. Try this link http://www.google.com/webfonts/preview#font-family=Yanone+Kaffeesatz with these texts:

  • Vista and Embedded Flash Fonts are missing?

    I Just upgraded to Vista with a new development machine. Have
    everything installed and good to go.
    I open a previous Director File that contains swf assets and
    static fonts. The fonts are simply missing. When I view the swf on
    it's own... no problem and text displays perfectly. swf in Director
    in Vista, no go. It worked perfectly in XP.
    The files that are published with XP, the fonts in Flash
    assets are all okay. Publish the exact same file in Vista, Fonts
    are missing.
    Any ideas?

    Fixed it by installing the latest Flash8 Xtra. Wish adobe had
    an installer that could just "update" the software rather than
    manually replacing files... Ah well, all good now.

  • 10.6.3 upgrade ruins Flash font spacing

    I've been using Flash since '99 and every now and then a Mac OS update will ruin the files, completely changing the font spacing inside Flash. Anyone else have this and know of a fix? If not, it means spending an unbelievable amount of time re-typesetting potentially hundreds of documents.

    1. Apple supplies developers with new systems before you ever see them.
    2. They (the developers ) make adjustments( or not ) to their programs to work with the new systems.
    3. Adobe is famous for not keeping up.
    Adobe isn't happy with Mac for not including Flash on the iphone system and the new iPad.
    Can you say HTML5?

  • Missing fonts in flash menu

    i'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this issue. i've
    got a collection of fonts in various formats all installed on my
    pc. several key fonts however, are not included in the flash font
    menu when i launch flash. they range in format (truetype, opentype
    and type 1, etc..), so i don't necessarily think it's a
    compatibility issue, but i've noticed that the fonts being left out
    seem wildly arbitrary. even amongst fonts within the same family.
    The prime example being an assorted library of helvetica neue font
    faces that i have. I've got around 40 or 50 different variations of
    this typeface and only about half of them show up in flash. i've
    tried overwriting the fonts and restarting my machine and then
    flash with no luck. i've even tried renaming the fonts, etc, and
    converting formats. i have no idea what's going on.
    i should mention this has been somewhat of a problem for me
    even from within previous versions of flash. is there some
    technical aspect of flash with regards to how it displays and
    utilizes font files/families that i should be aware of? ideally i
    would think that the font engine for future releases of flash would
    more closely mirror that of adobe aps such as illustrator and
    indesign. does flash treat fonts in more or less the same way
    currently though? for instance, if i enter some static text, choose
    helvetica neue regular (55 roman or what have you) and then make
    the text bold, is that simply an approximation of bold that flash
    is applying, or is it actually referencing by proxy, the
    corresponding "bold" face in the helvetica family (75 bold)?
    at any rate, i'd really appreciate if anyone could shed a bit
    of light on this subject. hopefully this makes sense.

    I'm having a similar issue with the Avenir font family
    (PostScript). First it wasn't showing up in Flash at all, then it
    was and I was able to get some work done.
    I've got a PowerMac G5, and I'm running Flash 8.
    Then I was gone for the holiday weekend, and when I came
    back, not only is it saying that I don't have the fonts again, but
    they are actually still there, listed under slightly different
    names in Flash (12 Avenir 95 Black 09173 became Bl Avenir Black,
    for example). If I try to change the font links in Flash to the
    ones with different names in the Inspector or in the Font Mapping
    dialog box that comes up when I open the file, Flash 8 crashes
    completely.
    I've installed and run the latest version of Extensis
    Suitcase, and I don't have any corrupt fonts, so I need some help
    figuring out what to do!

  • Fonts in flex/flash

    I posted this question over at actionscript.org but It might suit this forum more:
    I'm trying to create an application with AIR but there is one thing that keeps bugging me and its the vector based fonts, even though I select arial 12px font-weight normal it still look different than the font in the browser and everywhere else.
    In the application I'm building I will have a textarea so I tried to import a html textarea (in flex using <mx:HTML location...) and the font in that textarea look like it should but the flex textarea looks like the flash font, heres two images illustrating my point:
    Is it possible to change the font in flash so that it look and feels like normal or do I have to load an external html textarea every time I need a textarea?

    Сode hinting in Flash Builder 4 code editor for global style, e.g.
    global {
       font-family : Arial;
    works for me.
    Also in @font-family style declarations, I can code hint for "font-family", "embed-as-cff" styles property too.
    Although, it is true you do not get code hints for values for those particular properties, I think that CSS editor could support it too, but it does not.

  • Photoshop fonts not listed in flash

    Hey, I've designed the graphical interface for a website in
    photoshop and now i'm trying to create animated buttons in flash.
    trouble is, the font i have used to design the site in PS is not
    listed in the flash font list. This is the case for lots of
    different fonts in PS. The original font was TTF so i converted it
    to OT1 and i've dropped a copy into all the adobe font folders I
    can find but its still not picking it up. Does flash load its fonts
    from a specific folder and if so, does anyone know which? I cant
    figure out why both TTF and OT1 versions of this font are listed in
    one CS3 app and aren't listed in the other. I've also tried image
    drag and drop from PS to flash but it just imports the text as a
    gray box. i'm really stuck here, if anyone has any advice i'd be
    really grateful. thanks.

    In my own experience, Flash takes it fonts from your system
    fonts. So you probably need to install the fonts in your system
    (Windows) as opposed to installing them in specific applications.
    I'm uncertain on this one, so if someone else has better
    information to offer, please do.

  • Certain installed fonts not appearing in flash

    This has become a pretty frustrating experience. I'm running
    XP and have installed 6 .otf fonts, from the Avenir family. Flash
    MX 2004 and Flash 8 don't see all but the Light and Roman versions
    of the font (they are the only ones that appear in the font menu).
    Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop display all the fonts, however.
    An associate suggested that sometimes Flash doesn't like the
    names to be non-standard; in other words, it doesn't like "Heavy",
    but prefers "Bold", etc. This seems to support the fonts not being
    displayed in the Flash font menu, as they are
    AvenirLTStd-Heavy.otf, AvenirLTStd-HeavyOblique.otf,
    AvenirLTStd-LightOblique.otf and AvenirLTStd-Oblique.otf. The only
    two being displayed in the font menu are AvenirLTStd-Roman.otf and
    AvenirLTStd-Light.otf ("Roman" and "Light" are pretty traditional
    names).
    I've tried renaming the fonts to "Bold" and "italic", etc.,
    but Windows still sees the original names. I've tried opening the
    fonts in Notepad and changing all references (for example, all
    "Heavy" to "bold"), but saving the font file (even if I add and
    remove a space) makes it unreadable as a font (security issues, I
    think).
    One reason I think it's a naming issue, is I did try renaming
    Heavy to Roman, and installed it, and Flash saw it as Roman, but it
    had the Heavy characteristic. This work-around doesn't work,
    however, as I need Roman, too (and renaming it Roman2 doesn't
    work).
    Is there any solution for this? I need access to all of the
    Avenir font family, as it's for a branded project that uses Avenir
    specifically.
    Oh, and last but not least, I have the fonts installed on my
    Mac, and Flash 8 and CS3 both see all the fonts, no problem.

    It has nothing to do with font name itself. Also, by the way,
    font being a system component,
    can't be easily renamed in NotePad. You will need dedicated
    font editing tool like Macromedia's
    Fontographer.
    Anyway, Flash simply does not support some fonts and font's
    families. Unlike Other tools you brought
    up, Flash is vector based and not catered to handle all kind
    of fonts, but specific groups only. In
    fact if you deal with more applications, you will realize
    that it's a common issue. CorelDraw supports
    literally any font, half of which won't never shop up in
    Photoshop, then these that show up in photoshop,
    half of it won't show up in Flash, and so on. You just can't
    use all the fonts and it won't matter
    whatever you change their names. It's all about the font and
    its outlines and the way it is made.

  • How to embed an OpenType font in Beta 2?

    Hi Folks
    I'm trying to embed an OpenType font into a Flash Builder Beta 2 project and haven't been successful yet.
    What I've tried so far:
    1. changing the order of the font managers in the flex-config.xml file, to put the one that handles OpenType first:
    <manager-class>flash.fonts.AFEFontManager</manager-class>
    2. in the .css file for the main mxml file, changing   embedAsCFF: true;  to embedAsCFF: false;
    3. embedding the font using a .swf file containing the font made in Flash CS3, and referencing that in the .css file
    4. embedding the font in <fx:Script/> using [embed]. Got an error message on the src line (Embed is only supported on classes and member variables.)
    [Embed(source="/Library/Fonts/CalliopeMVBStdRg.otf",
             fontStyle = 'normal',
             fontName='Calliope MVB Std Regular',
             mimeType='application/x-font',
             embedAsCFF="true")]
    Any ideas on what my mistake is?
    Thanks for your attention
    Kearney Buskirk

    It should just work in CSS with @font-face.  What error did you get?
            @font-face
    When you tried #4 did you add the in front of a member variable?
    [Embed(source="/Library/Fonts/CalliopeMVBStdRg.otf",
             fontStyle = 'normal',
             fontName='Calliope MVB Std Regular',
             mimeType='application/x-font',

  • Textfield bug in Flash CS4 and Flash Player?

    Hi there,
    I'm goning mad about this, hope someone can help. What's the problem..
    I have a textfield on the stage (100% view). When I place a vertcal line at the end of the text and I zoom in to 200% the text in the textfield is somehow smaller!
    How is this possible???
    This problem doesn't only occur in Flash Pro but also in the Flash player in the browser.
    I tested this with Flash Pro on my Macbook Pro, and on serveral browsers (mac and windows). All the same zoom problems.
    You can find an example here: http://www.ninos.nl/flash/flash-fonts.html
    In this example you can zoom in from the flash context menu and you will see the problem.
    It looks like this strange zoom in 'bug' only occurs with textfields. Not with other elements on the stage.
    Am I doing something wrong here?
    I noticed this when I tested for a collision between a dynamic textfield and an object. On screen I saw the text overlap the object so there must be a collision. But there wasn't. After a zoom in in I saw a different thing. The text didn't overlap the object!! After a zoom out the text overlapped the object again.
    Very weird!
    Hope someone can help here.
    Thanks!
    Peter

    Hi there,
    I found it!
    I never thought that this would solve my problem but here it comes..
    I used this setting for my textfield: AntiAliasType.ADVANCED.
    I must say that it looks great on screen, but that generates my problem when zooming in and test on collision.
    When I changed this setting to AntiAliasType.NORMAL it all works like it should be. The text looks less nice but I can live with that..
    Very strange.. but solved Hope this can help someone else. Still think that this is a bug
    Cheers Peter

  • Ant, mxmlc and font managers

    My team is building an AIR application and we are using SVN and a Flex Ant task to compile it on a staging server.  I have a decent understanding of what each piece of the compilation process needs to run and got the AIR application compiled and packaged without too much hassle.
    We recently switched fonts and require the command line switch '-managers=flash.fonts.AFEFontManager' in Flex Builder.  I've been reading about how to get this done and have found two solutions:
    1) Edit the file frameworks/flex-config.xml and change the order of the font managers.  This isn't a great solution because every time we upgrade the SDK on the server we'll have to go through and make this change again.  This process is described in the adobe livedocs http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/3/html/help.html?content=fonts_06.html
    2) Set it as a managers attribute in the ant build file as described here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/610386/how-to-include-additional-compiler-arguments-whe n-using-mxmlc-ant-task I can't seem to get this to work, I end up with an error like this:
    src/build.xml:75: The <mxmlc> type doesn't support the "compiler.fonts.managers" attribute.
    I get the same error when I use the "managers" alias.
    My question is what is the preferred method of reordering the font managers?  Thanks in advance!

    I forgot to attach the relevant section of my build.xml, here it is:
        <target name="compile.release"
            description="Compile swf modules and main swf" depends="clean">

                optimize="${OPTIMIZE}"
                link-report="${out.dir}/swf-report.xml"
                locale="en_US"
                configname="air"
                compiler.fonts.managers="flash.fonts.AFEFontManager">

    Log Message:
    Adding a LRU cache for the transcoding results of a CFF based DefineFont4 tag to avoid transcoding the same font description twice.
    Also we now throw a better error when CFFFontManager is asked to embed a local font by name as this is not yet supported.
    QE notes: Please test that the same font embedded twice does not take twice as long as a single embedding.
    Doc notes: N/A
    Bugs:
    SDK-23966 - Compiler should generate a warning or error when embedAsCFF is true and src:local is used for font embedding
    SDK-23806 - OEM compiler appears to transcode embedded fonts twice
    SDK-23788 - Search fonts recursively
    Reviewer: Paul
    Tests run: Checkintests, bug test cases
    Is noteworthy for integration: Yes
