Flash hijacking HTML links while images are loading

I've designed a slide show player using Flash and Actionscript 3.0 which loads several external images. While the images are loading, the HTML links on my page (outside of the Flash movie) don't work. As soon as all the images are loaded, the links start working again. It seems like the Flash player is hijacking the browser while the images are loading which can take the better part of a minute depending on my connection speed. I can click an HTML link once during the loading time and as soon as the images have loaded, the browser loads the new page (the one the HTML links to). Once all the images are in my Temporary Internet Files folder, this problem ceases to exist (since the images no longer need to be downloaded). It's only first-time viewers that will have this problem, but it's a pretty major problem.
To see what I'm talking about, go to:
http://www.ericlindberg.com/indexTemp.html
Click the Images button after the "Loading..." animation disappears but before all the images are loaded. As the images load the thumbnails at the bottom of the Flash player go from 50% to 100% opaque. If  you click the "Images" button before all the thumbnails are 100% opaque, nothing happens. However, once they are all loaded and the thumbnails are all 100% opaque, the "Images" page loads. You can do the same thing with any of the subpages in the Images section of the site and get the same results.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have something similar on my site.

You might try using CSS rollovers instead of MM (javascript) rollovers.  Straight HTML links load fast and work immediately.

  • Onload event after all images are loaded in an updateContent area

    Hi Spry Folks!
I load a template into a page with a lot of img tags inside
    it. Everything works fine.
Spry.Utils.updateContent (...HTML wit lots of img tags...)
But the loading takes a while so I would like to hide it
until all the images are loaded. Now I need an event which fires
after the loading bar in the browser is gone.
The onPostLoad observer fires much to early, cause the code
is long loaded bevore all the images
    (...addObserver({onPostLoad:...)
    Same with the window.onload event (...window.onload =
    showContent();...) fires much to early.
The only thing which is working is placeing the function in
the onload event of the body tag.
    Like:
    <body onload="showContent();">
But there I can't use it. And there is now body.onload
handler as far as I know there is only the windows.onload handler
and I thought always this is the same event than onload in the body
    tag.
Has anyone an idea? Is there a spry event I haven't found for
    exact this problem?
    Thanks for your help!

    Hello,
U might want to look in to the SpryImageLoader.js that comes
with the 1.6.1 download. It loads your images, and allows u put
callbacks on them, and set priority of loading them.
    http://www.dbooth.net/photos/
uses it to (expect don forgot to upload the
SpryImageLoader.js thats why its not really working :P )
But that will give the basic idea of how to use it.
    Spry.Utils.ImageLoader.(url, callback(needs to be a function
    or null), priority)

  • How about a sign that images are loading?

I am a user of Elements 8.0 for image cateloging and some light editing and CS4 for major editing. I think I'm going to switch from Elements to LR 3.
When I try to load existing pictures on my hard drive (about 60 GB), I get no sign from LR 3 that the images are loading. After a LONG time, I give up waiting and close the program. Then I get a message telling me it's still loading pictures. Now I just load them in small batches, maybe 100 pictures at a time. Still no sign the program is doing anything, but the pictures load quickly so I know something is happening. Loading 16,000 some images a hundred or two at a time will be time consuming.
I recommend an hour-glass, or better yet, a bar graph showing something is happeing on how long it may lake to load pictures. Kind of like when you burn a DVD or CD from Elements. At least you know your computer hasn't crashed.
    Program looks pretty good otherwise.

That will require some javascript and depending on the current slide script you use, that may be more difficult than it's worth.
First, make sure your images are saved at their display size. If you have a 3000x3000 pixel image downsized to 150x150 in the html, it still loads like a 3000x3000 image (very slowly on low speed connections). Downsize the image to the actual viewed size you intend to use, you can drop MB files to a couple KB.
Next, optimize the images using Photoshops Save for Web feature Ctrl + Alt/Cmnd + Shift + S or File > Save for Web.
When the SFW dialogue box appears, there will be the options: Original Optimized 2-Up and 4-Up across the top.
Opening the 4-Up tab allows you to have 4 versions of the image displayed. Click on any given image and change the settings on the right of the dialogue window. Reduce the settings to the lowest possible, while still appearing "good" to you.
With that "lowest good" window selected (black outline around it), click Save and that optimized version will be the copy you get. This can drop a several hundred KB file to just a handful of KB, making your images load almost instantly, no more white box.

  • Can I show a spinner when the images are loading

I am now using flash builder 4.5.1 to create a mobile application. there will be multiple images in the view. I want to use  a spinner to indicate the image is loading, and once the image loaded,  the content of each image be replaced by the original mobimage.
    1) For IconItemRenderer, how to show the spinner?
    2) For the Image control, how to show the spinner?
Thanks and hope you can understand my question and also hope some people can answer me.

  • On YouTube, I can't play playlists there. It says I need to update my Java and it is updated already. When I go to different sites like Yahoo! the links and images are all distorted. This is the second time this has happened to me now

    Hello Firefox,
I am having problems with my Firefox's image processor I believe. My web browser is fine but then a few minutes later I get some weird look on my page. It then just stays here and I can't fix it. When I go to Yahoo all the links and images do not look normal. I really cannot explain this and wish I could send a picture instead. When I go to the Log in page for Facebook I do not see the image of the small faces networking around the world. It's blank and the links are widely spread apart. With YouTube the page is also distorted. Nothing is arranged properly. I can watch videos. However when I go to someone's profile or a playlist videos cannot play or show up. It says I need to update my Java player and it is already updated. It still happens when I uninstall and re install back. I was only able to fix this problem by uninstalling everything related to Firefox. I do not know how to solve this any other way. I don't like it when all my information is lost such as saved passwords and bookmarks. If there is any way to solve this thanks. I don't want to uninstall this again.

  • Send variable to Flash from HTML link

Does anyone know if it's possible to include a variable in an
html link <a> tag that can set a variable in Flash. I have
used JavaScript to do this in the past but would prefer not to on
this site. I also would prefer not have to use a server side script
or xml, as all I want to do is set multiple links on one html page
to open the same Flash movie on another html page, but make it go
to a particular frame or load a particular external swf based on
the link that was clicked. Thanks, JD

You need to use them in the object and embed tags.

  • No images are loading in Firefox normal mode.. But I can see all is normal in safe mode

When I open the Firefox in normal mode, no images are displayed. for eg.. in Google, the Google image is not displayed. Also all the other websites are having no colors. But everything is normal in the safe mode.

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

I got a suggestion on the Dreamweaver Forum:
"...You could write some code inside the Flash item, that detects bandwidth and only loads images with delay, when the connection is idle. I'm sure you can find enough examples of such behaviors in pre-loader samples of any kind and some of it is already pre-defined in later versions of Flash..."
Can anyone tell me how to write this code or point me to some examples that use it?

  • Can I link to images using absolute paths in HTML Help and still see them locally?

I'm publishing HTML help pages to a Web server.  All .htm files on the Web server are in their own folder, and all image files are in a separate folder.  Links to images are generally of the form <img src="/images/clear.png" height="14" width="8">.  That is, the images use an absolute path reference from the doc root folder (rather than relative path from the current file folder, such as "../images/myImg.png").
I can modify the HTML for the images to follow this convention, but then I cannot see the images locally within RoboHelp, but must instead wait until the files are integrated with the Web server.  Is there a way to set up a RoboHelp project so that I can force an image path of "/images" both locally and in the HTML?
    Using RoboHelp 9.0.1.232.
    Thanks.

RoboHelp expects the images to be within the project and will need that if you are to see them when working. It then uploads them to the server when you publish.  There is a check box when you publish so that only updated files get  uploaded.
You could point Resource Manager to the server folder with the images and then link to those images. What happens then is the image gets downloaded into your project so that you see it when working. If the server image changes you will see the icon in Project Manager changes so that you can update the local copy. It would be a one-off exercise changing your workflow.

I like to think that it's pretty self explanatory but I know that reading other peoples code can be a nightmare. Have a look at it and if you have any questions then feel free to post them.
What it does is read iView paramaters for image location (URL from KM) and a URL that'll be the link and just displays the images and links to that URL, fading one into the other.
What you should probably do though is ignore the paramter reading and just run the 'test()' method from doProcessBeforeOutput(). Have a look at the HTML and JavaScript that gets written, play with the imagesource and href parameters that are written in the code, see what it does. Then just modify it to use the images/urls' that you want.
Let me know if you need anything cleared up,
    Patrick.
