Flash Lag
I have been having a serious lag issue with my site http://www.byfchat.com . I run a flash chat application. The server doesn't lag but after users have been logged in for about a hour thier pc's lag bad. Any browser will lag. What is happening is the browser cpu usage increases to the point it lags the entire pc down. The users simply have to refresh their browser to clear up the lag for about another hour or so (depending on thier rig). Does anyone have any suggestions for this? I do not have a cache dump option in my script. Does anyone know if flash player can be configed to dump the garbage files that are building up on the users pc?
Uhh i dont think this is the issue.
It's a very basic flash video. It only consists of 2 layers, a blue background layer and text flashing on the top on the other layer
Like this
Then the text on the top layer flashes to this
So the problem is that when i switch tabs for a minute, then return to the page i get this
for 15 to 20 seconds. Which is strange between it should loop continously and not paused at all. It's as if i need to wait for the start of the movie untill i see the animation. For example .swf is 25 second long, if i switch tabs, i need to wait until the the start of the next 25 seconds to see the animation.

HW acceleration disable/enable makes no difference.
No issues in IE or Chrome.I have this same problem, and have had for months. I am running the latest version of flash player and the latest version of Firefox.
I created a video so you can see exactly what the problem is, notice when the mouse moves, there is constant dropped frames:

This occurs with hardware acceleration (in firefox settings) enabled or disabled. The only other browser I've tried is Chrome, and this lag does not occur in Chrome.

Flash lags when Safari window is not active
Whenever I have a flash video playing in one window, and then the window loses focus (I select a different window to be active), the video lags. I understand this is probably a feature to conserve resources, however I find this really annoying. I was wondering if there was a way to make it so this doesn't happen.
ThanksNope, no way to change it I'm afraid.

When i watch any flash video other then youtube, it lags in full screen mode, the frame rate becomes realllyy slow to where it is more like a slide show than a video, it runs perfectly fine in the small view...this never happened on snow leopard and doesnt happen on youtube whether its a low quality of hd videos.
This resolved the issue on my 2008 20" iMac:
1. Install the newest version of Flash (10.3.183.5)
2. Get Lion Cache Cleaner ( http://www.northernsoftworks.com/lioncachecleaner.html )
3. Use LCC for a Deep Cleaning of all system caches.
4. Delete your browser cache.
Let me know if it works for you too.

Flash Lagging on multiple browsers and multiple computers
I'm experencing sever lagging in playing flash games and viewing flash videos.
Current Flash Player is 11.7.700.169
Operating Systerm is Windows 7
Browsers used are Firefox, IE and Chrome.
All the above experenced on my desktop, my laptop, my wife's desktop and my wife's desktop.
I've used all three browsers on all computers. All computers are running Windows 7 and all are up to date.
I'll play the same few Facebook games and they all lag no matter which computer I'm using or what browser I'm using. Also experencing same lagging conditions when watching Youtube videos and streaming videos that use Flash Player from other websites. Seems like anything using Flash will give me the same results. I never had this lagging issue during Flash Player 10.
I've read plenty of other Forum post and have never seen a definitive answer. Seems like everyone wants to blame something other than Flash.
I've deleted and reloaded browsers, cleared cache, deleted and reloaded Flash. I even went so far reformatting and reloading a third desktop and still experence the same issue with Flash 11.
Just wanted to place my experence on the list of everyone else experiencing these issues.
Also hoping someone eventually finds a definitive fix for this issue.
thanksThis has been an ongoing problem for me as well. I have a tremendous amount of technical experience with computers. The problem is definitely the Flash Player. I have just finished reinstalling windows and after installing the latest version of Firefox and updating to the latest flash player, this problem occurs instantly. Sometimes I will watch a flash movie in a new tab and everything seems to be fine, but then when I am done watching the movie, I will close the tab and my browser instantly becomes completely frozen and I am unable to switch to other tabs or do anything at all in the browser. The only fix that seems to work for me is... I launch task manager and notice that the Flash Player is still running and appears listed on my "Processes" list twice. When I choose to "End Process" on one of the flash players, both flash players then close at the same time and vanish from the processes list and my browser instantly goes back to working correctly.
Another example is when I am currently watching a movie and I hit pause and then do something else on my computer, like check my mail, or play a game, or anything at all - I notice that my computer performs extremely laggy. Again, I choose to end process on the flash player, both instances of flash player then vanish from the Processes list and suddenly my computer is functioning correctly again and the lag disappears.
I know for a fact that Adobe is fully aware of the problem and they basically do not know how to fix it. My guess is that they have incorporated some kind of new functionality to their more recent versions of flash player that makes the flash player perform better, but it also causes lag and lock-up problems. They do not want to remove their new functionality, so instead - they allow users to suffer. I don't really care what the percentage of users are that are suffering from this problem. What I do know is - that nobody should be forced to suffer.
I am a Web Devloper and Firefox user and I am not about to use a different browser. I especially will not use Internet Explorer since using Internet Explorer is like holding up a sign that says "I want a virus". Every large devlopement company I have ever worked for in NYC will not even allow anybody in their office to use Internet Explorer ever because it is considered to be a high security risk. The lock-up and lag problems that are caused by flash player are very well know at these companies. It is very common for an employee to experience computer problems and almost every single time they have a problem - the cause of the problem is the flash player. Everytime an employee has a problem where their computer is acting laggy or locks up, the first thing they are "trained" to do is check to see if their flash player is running in their processes list and in almost every problematic situation - the flash player is the cause of the problem.
Considering that Adobe makes every know #1 Design & Creation Web Design & Editing program and basically monopolizes the market when it comes to these programs, I think that they would be the first company to understand that Firefox is the leading web browser with developers, especially because of all of the web developer addons that Firefox offers. So I really don't understand why Adobe continues to treat Internet Explorer like it should be everybody's default browser. Flash Player should always be designed to work best in Firefox first and it currently does not function correctly in Firefox at all. It is a huge fail. It is an even bigger fail that they have had 2 years to fix this and they have not.
So I continue to use flash player and Firefox despite the problems, I just have to remember to "end process" on the flash player all the time, which really sucks. Flash player is the only thing that causes problems for me on my computer and has been the only problem for almost 2 years now. You would think that Adobe would have fixed this by now. I have searched and found hundreds of users with the same exact problem, and every single solitary time the same incompetent answers are given from Adobe.
I have created a shortcut on my task bar to launch my task manager easier. I created this shortcut for one reason only - to end process on my flash player when it causes serious lock up problems. I suggest that other users do the same. Maybe in 5 years Adobe might finally decided to attempt to fix the very well known problem that they are fully aware of instead of ignoring it completely as they have been. If they have not been ignoring the problem, then they would be honest and tell their flash player users that they are fully aware of the problem and that they are working hard to find a solution and fix the problem, but they have not stated this because they do not want to admit that they have screwed up. Again, I can only assume that they have tried to fix the problem but they don't know how to.
I am a proud user of Adobe products, but I am completely at awe when it comes to how huge a fail the flash player problem has become. I suggest that Adobe work closely with Firefox and other browser companies to find a solution to this problem and fix it. Nobody should be forced to fix the problem for themselves and reinstall a 2 year old version of flash player to fix the problem. If users were to do this, they would then be faced with constant messages telling them that they do not have the latest version of flash player. -
[help] high cpu usage with flash (Hello adobe developer)
Running youtube or facebook games, here's what I found. CPU usage rises to 90-100% or 90-100 % of a core.
Tested in XP32/Win7 64. Clean setups. Tested with Flash 9, 10, 10.1 rc's. Used uninstallers, reinstalled and so on. Googled on this, read many threads, such as granting permission on several files. Tested with IE, Firefox, Chrome. SAME stuff. Tested on an e8400 with P35 chipset, i3 530 with P55 chipset, e7400 with nvidia ion chipset, tested with 7[3|6]00gt's, gts 250.. So yes, I've tried a lot of things. And many different drivers too. I am now only pointing fingers at flash.
PC gets sluggish, laptops run out of battery fast. I can usually fix a lot of technicals issues on my own, but I'm TOTALLY stuck here. I should also add that, cpu usage rises only when there is motion. I can watch an .avi movie or play some 3D game, and they won't suck the cpu totally. I can remember in the past, flash won't do this. Flash won't drag the system down. Something is SERIOUSLY wrong.
Can an Adobe dev comment please?I find it strangely odd that you've never seen this phenomenon, but at least you must have heard of it. Google flash high cpu usage. Facebook games flash lag. Or something alike. Mind moving my thread there? So there won't be a dupe thread.
I posted a similar thread in mozilla forums to see what they have to see, since i notice lag is more apparent in firefox than in ie, although both hog up cpu.
As you can see, I'm not alone.

My installation _of_ what? Let's see, I tried to replicate this in the most bare environment. With nothing else installed, and default Windows 7 drivers, I installed flash from the web, plugin only first, then activex, did the testing, same stuff. Installed OLD 183 drivers, tested with 197 drivers, then 256 beta drivers. Same deal. -

I've been experienceing a kind of "Lag" in video playback.
After about 10-15 minutes into the video, the video playback starts to lag behind the audio.
The audio plays fine, at it normal speed, while the video will become out of sync and you can notice that the mouth of the people in the video are moving far slower than the audio playback.

The issue (lag) is happening in Firefox 8.0.1 and Chrome 15.0.874.121
(I do not have IE installed so am not aware if the issue exist in that browser)
I have tried all the steps here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Flash#Performance_or_display_issues_with_cer tain_Flash_videos
None of those have resloved the issue.
Notes: This issue is occuring on 2 other laptops in home. One running Windows Vista, the other is running Windows 7 same as the laptop from above.
There is a 4th laptop, running Windows 7, which is not experienceing the "Lag" issue: But I believe that is due to Flash 10 being installed instead of Flash 11 like the others.
I will be downgrading the flash version on one of the problem laptop to see if that will resolve the issue.KoolaidJunkie wrote:

Adobe Flash Updated to a x64 but Firefox is not available in x64.
So I just uninstalled the x64 version of Flash, and manually downloaded/installed the x32 version
Videos are play all the way through with No lag that I've noticed as of yet. Have checked 5 videos (each about 30min)
Firefox x64 is currently under development. There's a third party version of Firefox x64 available called Waterfox, download from here: http://waterfoxproj.sourceforge.net/downloads
However, because it's not an official Mozilla release, it might be prone to bugs. If the 32-bit version of Flash works for you, then I would stick with it if I were you. You know the old saying, "If it works, don't fix it". -

I really need to reduce the lag happening in this project. I know practically nothing about action script except for what I've used in this project so please keep that in mind.
Im going to try and break apart the grouped art so its in its most basic form and see if that helps, and also change all my tweens to frame by frame since those two things helped me with an animation I did awhile back that was lagging severely.
But I was hoping someone with more knowledge could take a look and see if there is anything that they know of that I could do to help fix this. I'm working in Flash cs6 and using action script 3.
I have to turn this project in by this Friday (the 20th) so I would love to get this sorted by then but even if I can't I would still be interested in some possible solutions, just for learnings sake.
Thanks.Thank you for yet another cryptic reply, remember I'm the idiot here who doesn't understand this stuff so please can you explain things in a little more detail. Thanks.
I am using the JW Player setup assistant and it lists two types of code
The "Embed code" and the "swfobject 1.5 code" but not an Object/Embed code that you mention.
This is the code that the website is telling me to use.
<script type="text/javascript" src="/embed/swfobject.js"></script>
This text will be replaced
<script type="text/javascript">
var so = new SWFObject('/embed/player.swf','mpl','480','270','9');
so.addParam('allowscriptaccess','always');
so.addParam('allowfullscreen','true');
so.addParam('flashvars','&file=http://web.me.com/nathmac31/Flash/WaineWeddingHD. swf');
so.write('player');
</script>
My movie does play on through the player on the JW site, after about 30 seconds of waiting for the picture to appear. When I cut and paste the above code into my webpage, I don't get anything. I have dropped the "Player.swf" and "swfobject.js" files into the folder containing the contents of the page that I want the player to appear on.
Where is the exact best place to drop these files? -
LONG lag time switching from other programs to Flash
(Intec-Mac - OSX - 1.5 GB RAM)
Has anyone heard of this before? Any time I switch from any
other open program to a project in Flash, I get a super long wait
time before I'm able to work with Flash again. The lag time
only happens when switching to Flash (I get the spinning
ball of death while the Flash menus load again -EVERY time!)
This happens no matter if I have just Flash open and I'm
switching from the finder back to it or if I have 15 programs open
at once...
It is super frustrating and slowing down my workflow between
Flash and any other programs! I just uninstalled and reinstalled
hoping it would help but got same result - Any help?Your best bet at this point in time is more RAM, since the
Flash IDE on
mac is only PPC at this time it runs emulated in Rosetta on
Intel macs,
and I've noticed swap times can be quite slow, this is not
unique to
Flash in my experience, it happens whenever I swap in a
resource
intensive app. Parallels is another prime example - and it is
intel
native.
Adobe engineers appear to have a new found love of the Mac,
so we can
only hope the intel native version ships it will be super
zippy.

Any ideas for reducing lag in my animation (flash cs6)?
I'm creating something for a local college in Flash CS6 and it lags in a couple spots (in the very beginning after clicking enter and after clicking on a location on the map) and it would obviously be really nice to get rid of that lag. The only thing i know to try in order to help with lag is to break down all grouped artwork and to convert tweens into frame by frame. I've done this and it hasn't changed anything so I was hoping someone else would have another idea. Ive uploaded the swf and flash file to dropbox. What is in the dropbox is not the final product I need to add the videos thats are going to be in it (they pop up once you press the play button) but other then the videos that is as complicated as the file is going to get. This lag started happening from the get go of working on this project once I had the barebones of the menu system figured out. It hasn't gotten any worse since then even after all the things I've added.

Let me know if there is more information you want me to provide. Im really willing to try anything to sort this out.
Thanks in advance.the following is an excerpt (Flash Game Development: In a Social, Mobile and 3D World),
Optimization Techniques
Unfortunately, I know of no completely satisfactory way to organize this information. In what follows, I discuss memory management first with sub-topics listed in alphabetical order. Then I discuss CPU/GPU management with sub-topics listed in alphabetical order.
That may seem logical but there are, at least, two problems with that organization.
I do not believe it is the most helpful way to organize this information.
Memory management affects CPU/GPU usage, so everything in the Memory Management section could also be listed in the CPU/GPU section.
Anyway, I am going to also list the information two other ways, from easiest to hardest to implement and from greatest to least benefit.
Both of those later listings are subjective and are dependent on developer experience and capabilities, as well as, the test situation and test environment. I very much doubt there would be a consensus on ordering of these lists. Nevertheless, I think they still are worthwhile.
Easiest to Hardest to Implement
Do not use Filters.
Always use reverse for-loops and avoid do-loops and avoid while-loops.
Explicitly stop Timers to ready them for gc (garbage collection).
Use weak event listeners and remove listeners.
Strictly type variables whenever possible.
Explicitly disable mouse interactivity when mouse interactivity not needed.
Replace dispatchEvents with callback functions whenever possible.
Stop Sounds to enable Sounds and SoundChannels to be gc'd.
Use the most basic DisplayObject needed.
Always use cacheAsBitmap and cacheAsBitmapMatrix with air apps (i.e., mobile devices).
Reuse Objects whenever possible.
Event.ENTER_FRAME loops: Use different listeners and different listener functions applied to as few DisplayObjects as possible.
Pool Objects instead of creating and gc'ing Objects.
Use partial blitting.
Use stage blitting.
Use Stage3D.
Greatest to Least Benefit
Use stage blitting (if there is enough system memory).
Use Stage3D.
Use partial blitting.
Use cacheAsBitmap and cacheAsBitmapMatrix with mobile devices.
Explicitly disable mouse interactivity when mouse interactivity not needed.
Do not use Filters.
Use the most basic DisplayObject needed.
Reuse Objects whenever possible.

BDA Slip De-Framer,0x00600000,1,1,,5.03.2600.5512I noticed the past two days that Solitaire Blitz game on Facebook and Jewel Quest game on Yahoo are flying now. I installed 11.4 a few days ago and still have protected mode disabled, but I didn't notice this change until Tuesday evening. The only thing different about my computer Tuesday is that I had disabled Java. (I received an email tip from Kim Komando saying Java has security flaws and should be disabled until they can be patched.) Could there be a conflict between Flash and Java, with Java causing Flash to be slightly slower? This isn't a real "problem" for me, as I thought both games were working fine prior to disabling Java; but I did notice they were even faster the last couple of days.
-
All the time Flashplayer lags - when I play Fruit Ninja on Facebook, my videos lag, mainly on fullscreen but sometimes it lags not on fullscreen. I'm tired of this. I have these problems since months now...

Flash Player Lag in IE 9 FF and Chrome
For some reason on all 3 of these platforms Flash Player is laggy. I can't watch any type of videos or even play any type of games that require flashplayer with out this lag. Is there a fix to this? It's getting pretty rediculous. This is a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64.
My system specs are
AMD Athlon II x4 630
4GB OCZ Gold RAM
500GB Hard Drive
Geforce GTX 260
This has started when I reformatted. After 3 successful reformats it still lags after installation. I do not know why. I have seen other posts for fixes but they do not work. I have even installed the beta version of flash and the lag got worse. HELP please. They aren't interested in solving our problems unless we are making them money. They don't care about the users who watch videos and play games, they only care about those who will purchase their overpriced software. As long as a certain percentage of users are satisfied, they aren't going to look into making flash what it should be: Something that works. They are going to look at more ways for making money.
