Flash question (if / else)

Hey guys,
I just found a video tutorial online that was kinda helpful for my homepage.
I want to change one thing though, (and tried for the last 2 hours) but I don't really (or at all) get it to work how I want it.
http://www.republicofcode.com/tutorials/flash/video/countdown.php
This is the tutorial and it creates a countdown timer in flash.
Following the Actionscript, what I want to accomplish is that the timer actually stops after the event has happened and displays some kind of a text.
I tried playing around with an if statement (the last line), something like
if (counter > 0) {
     time_txt.text = counter;
} else {
     time_txt.text = "Random Text";
but that did not work for me, and I honestly don't know why.
Attached the entire Actionscript if somebody wants to help me.
Thanks in advance.
Don

  • Flashing Question Mark on Boot-Up

Any help would be greatly appreciated with a problem I am having.
I have a Mid 2009 2009 MacBook Pro that is showing a flashing question mark against a grey background when I try and start it up.
If i remove the HDD and place it in a USB caddy the system boots and runs just fine but the same drive does not appear in the list of bootable drives (in fact no drives appear)
I have tried with several known good HDDs from other Macs.
I have tried resetting the NVRAM with Command-Option-P-R but each time the same grey screen and flashing question mark remains - no options appear.
I have tried to resting PRAM via Terminal - refuses to recognise command.
I have removed hardware password using System disk.
I have pulled my hair out.
None of the above have worked.
Does anyone have any clues as to anything else I can try?
    Many thanks.

Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by:
Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD:
    Boot From The Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Flashing Question Mark Folder Everything I Am Trying is Not Working!

A few days ago my iMac gave me the "pinwheel of death" so I cold shutdown and rebooted. I heard the chime and then I got this flashing folder with a question mark on it. I quickly jumped on my Macbook pro and researched what it meant. I tried booting while holding the option key and would get a blank white screen with a mouse pointer and nothing else. I tried resetting my PRAM and still nothing! Then I saw someone say to restart my iMac while holding down R to start into disk utility. It worked! I went through the repair disk process and it said there was nothing to repair. I then repaired disk permissions, and bingo it had to repair a few different things that needed to be repaired. Once the repair process finished I rebooted to my main drive and everything worked fine. That night I shutdown my computer and the next morning I got the flashing folder again. This time however, after shutting down and rebooting everything worked fine. Now today my iMac froze and I cold shutdown and rebooted. I got the flashing folder and question mark again. This time nothing is responding. I tried rebooting while holding the option key, tried booting into disk utility and still nothing. The only thing that the iMac will recognize is when I reboot while holding the 'option' key and put in the Mac OS X Lion install disc It lets me click that disc and it starts the install cycle... I really don't want to do this as it would wipe everything on the drive and I do not have a lot of documents backed up. What do I do? Am I screwed? Help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks much!

I think the HD has crashed. Run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode at least 3x back to back. If it reports errors, next step is your local Apple Store or AASP. Also carefully read and apply Apple's advice in Flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac. If you had been backing up it would have been a simple matter of replacing the HD, restoring from the backup and you're back up and running. Considering you said you don't back up you're about to learn a very painful lesson on why backing up isn't something you should do it's something you MUST do.
Good luck and sorry for the bad news.

  • TS1440 A flashing question mark appeared when I started my MacBook Pro, I've tried all the suggestions and nothing has worked. How can I back up my current files so I can reinstall Mavericks?

I recently did a manual reboot after my MacBook Pro had frozen, and instead of the usual Apple and loading icon, it gave me the flashing question mark on a folder, which I've never encountered before. I looked up some possible reasons on my PC, and after reading that there's a problem with my HD I tried looking up how to back up my files so that I can do a clean reinstall of Yosemite (latest ver.). However, I've never used anything like Time Machine or anything else that could back up all my files, so it didn't sound like I could do anything about that at this point. I've also tried going into Disk Utility and attempting to repair the disk image. There was only 2 available, disk0 and the base system. I verified the base system, and told me there was nothing wrong (it didn't give me the option to repair anything either, on both available options). I don't think this is the right thing though, since my drive was called MacBook Pro HD. So basically this is the point I'm at now. Is there anything I can do that will repair my HD without erasing all my files?

I've tried all the suggestions and nothing has worked.

  • IMac DV SE 400 chimes, gives flashing question mark. Hard drive bad?

My G3 iMac DV SE 400 will not start up. This is what happens:
    1. Startup chime
    2. Hard drive starts to spin
    3. Hard drive "clicks" once
    4. Flashing question mark on screen
I tried resetting the PRAM and disconnecting everything like it says in the manual. I have booted up from CD and used Disk Utility (OS X) and Disk First Aid (OS 9) to find out if the computer "sees" the hard drive. No luck with either one - the drive does not mount. I have also tried System Profiler and the computer does not recognize the presence of any hard drive there either.
Is the hard drive really "dead?" Can it be resurrected - at least to the point where I can retrieve my files, pictures, etc.? I'm confident that the drive is receiving power because it actually starts to spin up (see #2 above). Am I overlooking something easy here? Could it be as simple as replacing the battery? I haven't tried that because the hard drive does "attempt" to start up.
Failing all else, is it possible to retrieve the data using my other Mac even though the hard drive will not boot?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well if it spins up you might be able to salvage your data with Data Rescue II (free demo) or Disk Warrior. You could also try Target mode but if disk utility didn't see it then that's probably not going to be any better.
If those two don't see it then your only option is data retrieval via a pro company but that will be very expensive.

  • Flashing Question mark: New hard drive not working Macbook Pro late 2008

After following several peoples advice on this forum I decided to upgrade my Macbook Pro late 2008 with a Seagate (1TB) Solid State Hybrid Drive 2.5 inch.
    Heres the device.
    http://www.morecomputers.com/spec.aspx?pn=ST1000LM014
After creating a mountable boot on a External hard drive with Mavericks install I removed the current hard drive and replaced with the new seagate drive. However it didn't seem to recognize the external hard drive (it is quite old but works perfectly) and went to a flashing grey question mark screen and wouldnt do anything else. Ive tried holding down command-r and option-r but I get nothing. Its just the same flashing question mark. I have done this several times and the same result.
I put the old drive back in and it works fine.
I am trying to work out is the problem with the mountable external hard drive OR is it the hard drive is not compatible with my computer?
    Appreciate your help
    Gary

Sorry I think you may be confused.
I am trying to install the new Seagate hard drive to my mac (not as an external hard drive).
I replace the macbook pro hard drive with the seagate drive:
    http://www.morecomputers.com/spec.aspx?pn=ST1000LM014
I then started up the machine with a usb external hard drive with a boot copy of mavericks on it. However, it just displayed a flashing question mark and wouldnt start booting the osx.
I am trying to work out is the problem with the mountable external hard drive OR is it the hard drive is not compatible with my computer? Im guessing it must be hard drive. Would it be better to use a USB pen drive as the external hard drive is quite old?
Does anyone know what the problem could be as the hard drive is brand new.
    Appreciate your help
    Thanks, Gary

  • Macbook has the folder with flashing question mark

Yesterday as I was watching Netflix my Mac froze. I was skipping around an episode and then started opening a folder to do something else while it loaded and then it just froze. I thought maybe I was clicking on too many things at once or whatever and it got screwed up a bit so I closed it for a minute or two. When I opened it back up it had a (light) blue screen that wouldn't go away so I shut it down with the power button. Then when I turned it back it just had a white/gray screen for like a minute before the folder with the flashing question marked appeared.
I've googled possible solutions but nothing seems to work. It won't boot up in safemode. One answer suggested trying to do comm-opt-P-R (can't remember what that was trying to do) and that didn't work. The screen would just go black and then start up over and over. When I just press the opt-key it takes me straight to Internet recovery. However, none of the options available work. I don't have the TimeMachine thing, I don't have a disk to reload the Lion software, and there's nothing to click on at all in the disk utility. All that's available in that is a disk0 and the Mac OS X Base System and I can't click on First Aid/Erase/Partition/Restore. I've opened up the startup disk and there's nothing that shows up.
Is there something else I can try at home or should I just go ahead to the apple store? My Mac is under a year old still, but I spilled soda on it back in like October and had to get all the parts replaced so I don't know if that would do anything to the warranty....And if something does have to get replaced will I lose all my stuff? It was bad enough losing four months worth of data, I don't want to lose seven.
    Thanks for any help.

As long as the parts were replaced by someone authorized to do the repairs, you should still be fine. This error indicates that they computer isn't able to find a disk to boot to.
The "disk" to reload Lion is that internet recovery (also can be launched from command + r).
Seeing as how you don't have the startupdisk in Disk Utility, I would recommend getting it into a store to see why that drive isn't detected. It could be something as simple as a loose SATA cable, or as catastrophic as complete hard drive failure. While you're at the store, I'd look into investing in an external drive to start running Time Machine...

  • Blank screen flashing question mark/finder, weird sounds

I read some other discussions about the flashing question mark, and restarting the system with the restore disc, which intend to try when I get home, but it is also making clicking sounds. When the power is turned on, it sounds like the disk starts up, but then clicks about 4 times at a slow even meter, then turns off. Then the screen goes black, it swipes blue top to bottom, then the flashing ?/finder over a file folder appears. Is this indicative of anything worse? Also, I tried holding down the option key during start-up, but all I got was an icon with a circle arrow and another with an arrow pointing right. All I got when I clicked on these was an hour glass for a minute then nothing.
    Thanks!

Update on the problem: Took the computer to the Apple store and the Mac Genius was very helpful. I got mad for a second when he told me that it is policy for warranty items to be UPS delivered for service, all expenses paid by Apple, if you are 50 miles outside the radius of an Apple store. I specifically asked the Apple care customer service person about this before going to the store, and I was told that they only allowed laptops to be shipped in. They probably prefer to sell me something else to allow that. Back to mac genius: luckily, I brought my external hardrive, something I probably would have been told to do if I had paid for Apple care and was able to talk to someone, which the tech people will install Tiger on, run a disk repair program to try to salvage the data on the harddrive, and then drop to the external. If not, data is lost. Either way the harddrive is indeed kaput and will be replaced under warranty.
I called Apple care again and walked through the whole scenario with a rep (not disclosing the info from the mac genius) and she agreed that if I had bought Apple Care, I would have had to go through the exact same excercise. So, phone support is a rip off - the forum is way better. I will be buying the extended warranty, though, due to obvious fears for future problems. Dollars to donuts the red carpet will get rolled out for the next problem considering I paid up.

  • HELP PLEASE-- flashing question mark on startup, none of remedies working

I'm using my Powerbook one night, everything is working fine. I wake up, go to use it and I get the spinning color wheel; tried to close an application by force quit and I get no response, so I restart using the power button, and the flashing question mark / mac OS icon pops up.
I immediately did some research on what to do; I put the OS cd in, tried restarting holding the C key and later the X key; nothing. Tried resetting PRAM, didn’t solve the problem. Tried holding command-S to check disk/repair, didn’t work. I then held the option key to choose the location to boot off: and neither the HD nor cd showed up: just the circular arrow to re-scan, and the straight arrow to enter the selection.
I have 2 install discs: I'm not sure if they are the same or not; I may have put the wrong one in. So I tried to eject it and now it wont eject.
Firstly, how to eject the cd? I tried holding the eject button, F12, command + . , as well as the trackpad. I don’t see a place to put a pin or paperclip in like some cd drives have to force it open.
Secondly, what else can I try to get my computer working? I'm no expert, but it sounds like this might be a hardware problem aside from the HD, being that the computer is not recognizing neither HD nor cd. However, the cd I have is a copy of the OS disc I made, and it may or may not be the right install disc, or properly made copy.
How difficult is it to open up Powerbooks and replace the HD? I'd like to have it up and running as soon as possible, but most importantly I hope that my data is still safe. And no, unfortunately I hadn't backed up my data. Please advise.

Maybe the copy of that disk is not bootable. Do you have the original or can you get it?

  • 2 Flash Questions

    Hi Everybody,
Could you please help me with 2 Flash questions I have:
1.) When I add the Flash show to my website...the site seems to slow down considerably:
    site
Does anyone know why this is?
2.) Does anyone know how I can avoid that extra white space on the actual show so it fist into the table cell without showing any whitespace? I bought the FLA and have tried playing with it but to no avail.
    Thank you!!!!

    1.  any performance problems beyond any other page-turn flash would be caused by poor coding.   there's nothing else going on there.
    2.  the white space problem is also a flash problem.  either poor coding or incorrect image sizes.

  • Wet iBook G4 and flashing question mark

    Hi there!:)
I have a 12" iBook G4 with Panther. Yesterday accidentally it got soaked due to a flooding...
I've opened it and dryed it..
Today I see a flashing question mark when I start the Mac.
I've started up from the system software CD.
From the Apple menu I've choosen Disk Utility, but there were no hd seen...but the disk utility could see the external hd.
I've tried to reset the parameter RAM (PRAM), but nothing changed.
I've done the Apple Hardware Test and the result was that all is ok.
I've tried to install the system on an external hd but, in the pane where you select the destination disk, there were no disk seen,no internal and no external (even if connected).
Is this only an hd problem?Or something else?
Can I solve it by changing the hd?
Thanky so much for your help in advance!

Unfortunately, that external drive won't help you, even if you install OS X on it. An iBook can't boot from USB. Additionally, the drive needs to be formatted using the APM partition scheme as Mac OS Extended (journaled).
If you're game for tearing down your computer once more, pick up an external enclosure that uses Firewire (you can get them at http://www.macsales.com), remove the drive from the computer and place it in the enclosure, then see if the computer can see it. If not, the drive is dead and needs to be replaced.

  • Why won't my MacBook Pro start up? White screen and flashing question mark.

    Hi,
I've had my MacBook Pro for almost 2 years now and I installed OS X 10.8 about 4 months ago.
Today I turned the MacBook Pro on and a white screen with a flashing question mark appeared. I tried then getting the startup manager up: turning on the laptop and immediately holding in alt (option). But nothing appeared for about 25 seconds until a rotating Earth labelled 'Internet recovery' appeared that gave me options to join wireless connections. However, my internet wasn't in the options and when I tried typing in the information required to join my internet the laptop would just load and never find it.
I then tried putting in my Mac OS X install DVD (10.6.7) and help in C until the apple logo appeared on the screen and the little rotating loading circle appeared. That then disappeared and a cicle with a cross through it appeared (similar to a no entry sign). Then after about 30 seconds a blue screen followed by a grey screen appeared until eventually the disc ran properly. I then went into Disk Utility but there was no option called Macintosh HD, only the discs content. It wouldn't let me first aid, erase or repair anything.
I'm totally stumped and have 4 exams at university within the next 2 weeks. I'd really appreciate it if anyone could help me out here?
    Thanks,
    Best wishes,
    Connor

The support article linked below is somewhat outdated. Where it refers to starting up from an installation disc, you should instead start up in Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
If you don't have a current backup of all the data on the startup volume, and you want to preserve that data, then you must try to back up before you do anything else. Ask for instructions if you need them.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to reinstall OS X from Recovery, if necessary. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.

  • GSoD, flashing question mark folder

Okay, after reading here a bit the suggestions aren't fixing my particular issue. We have a black MacBook running 10.3.
On boot, the GSoD comes up, and then the flashing question mark folder.
Tried putting in the Install CD and pressing at various times S, C, Apple, Shift, and Option. The Option gives a cursor but nothing else.
Pulled the DIMMS, cleaned off a white dust, and then installed them one at a time. No luck.
Wife had reported slowness during the evenings but she attributed that to me being on my computer.
    Thoughts?
    Leam

    Hi Leam,
Are you sure it's running OS X 10.3? Reason I ask, is because the MacBook was released with 10.4.6 (May 2006). So if it's running Panther then the unit was downgraded. Matter of fact, I don't even think you can put 10.3 on an Intel Mac. Not to mention, OS X 10.3 doesn't offer Rosetta support so you wouldn't be able to install Intel applications on the machine.
Regarding the flashing question mark/folder icon, that's indicative of a missing, bootable OS. Which can translate into some of the following scenarios:
1.) The OS is corrupted and needs to be repaired or reinstalled
2.) The OS cannot be located because the HD is failing or has failed
3.) The HD's connection to the logic board has been lost or damaged and thus a proper boot sequence cannot be performed.
I'm unsure where you read about the "S" key on startup, the "C" key makes sense to try and boot off the disc drive. I take it that didn't actually occur, though?
I've seen scenarios where a HD can lock up the system bus and cause boot issues, like you're experiencing. Basically it prevents the optical drive from being accessed, despite valid startup keyboard commands. If you can't boot normally or off the installation disc, the next scenario would be the following:
1.) Remove the HD from the unit, mount it into an external enclosure and attempt to boot from a CD and repair the external HD.
2.) Bring the unit into a service provider / retail store for further diagnostics.

  • Help! Flashing question mark on G3 Imac

I just picked up a Lime G3 Imac 333Mhz. 128 mb Ram, 10G hard drive. It has System 9.2 loaded. We got it this week from a private party (not a school machine) and it worked great for one day. However, next day, we tried to start it and got the flashing question mark. I tried starting it off the Imac install disk and the restore disk but it didn't switch over to the CD when I held down "C". I tried starting with extensions off too, and even tried zapping pram. All to no avail.
I'm stumped here. Any ideas what else to try?

Solved!! I finally tore into the case to look at replacing the battery. On the way in, I discovered that the hard drive cable thumb screws weren't snug down. I screwed them in all the way, tried it again (cynically, but just on the off chance that something had changed.) and Voila! Back to original working order. My kids are so pleased.
    Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

  • Flashing question mark during start up

    Hello,
I have a mid-2007 mac mini and recently I upgraded the RAM to 2 GB from 1 GB (two flashes of 1GB each). When I open the mac mini, a flashing question mark appears.
I' ve read the support thread from apple, but nothing helps. The only progress that happend is that when I pressed the Option key, the mouse appeared on screen, but nothing else.

It didn't start right after the replacement. The first time I tried to open it, the question mark appeared.
I have tiger installed by default on the mac mini and I don't own the installation dvd because it was already made by a person who didn't want the mac mini and gave it to me.
I cannot use my dvd driver because is not working anyways (before the replacement). What I wanted to do after the installation was to go to 10.6 and then to 10.7 mac os. That's why the upgraded ram memory.
I guess, from what you said, that the most likely is to have done something to the hd. I followed the instructions by the book, although. How can I figure out if there's something wrong with my hd (it's the one that mac mini had by default) ?
