Flash Video & XML

I am not a Flash user, but from what I've read I think it
might do what I need.
I have a Quicktime that I could convert to Flash video. I
have jpeg files that I want to show side -by-side with the video at
specific times during the video. I also have an XML file that
defines when to show the jpegs (based on timecode) and which file
to show at that time. I would keep the jpegs on a server. Using
this method, I can update my jpeg graphics without having to edit
the video. Less time consuming to update an element than to update
the entire video. Update the jpeg, and replace it on the server
with the same name.
The user would play the Flash movie. At specific times, a web
browser window would open up to show a jpeg file. And ongoing
points, the web broswer would change to subsequent jpeg files as
defined by the XML. It's basically a power point that runs
concurrently with the Flash video.
Can this be done in Flash? Easily? Expertly? With what
software components?
Thanks for any help or comments.

    flash devs,
    all i'm doing to playin videos from a xml file - (used lots
    of info and code from Lee's XML Video Playlist Tutorial)
    after spending hours getting this to work correctly in AS3
    and how i want it to work i've hit a brick wall
    i've got 2 components on stage - vid_select (List) & vid
    (Player)
    i can load my flv videos from my xml file just perfect but
    after the first video is done it stops.
    i'd like to have my video player play through the xml file
    and then restart at the beginning...
    i've attached my code...
    if anyone could possibly help me so that it "loops" through
    all the video in my xml list that would be
    so greatly appreciated...
    i'm new to AS and am learning alot but some code gets
    complicated and i'm not sure what to add...
    thanks in advance
    @pixeladdikt

    Again thank you for your help in advance...
    I put the script folder into the root. As far as the .flv
    file it is showing up as being "put" to my web server. when i
    checked the root folder it is there. again i am having the same
    problem.. the local view works but when i check it on the web it
    just shows that there should be a flash video there but it does not
    show up.
    i created a new root for this test page the new link is..
    http://www.wfwa.org/TESTindexfolder/TESTindex.asp
    here are the files that are showing up in it...

  • Loading Flash Video through XML

    Hello,
    I have an Flash gallery that loads dynamic content from an
    XML file. I'm trying to display a flash movie in the main display
    section, so when a user clicks a thumbnails the corresponding video
    would play in the main display area. Right now the thumbnails are
    displaying wonderfully but when I try to load an external swf file
    using the loadClip() method, that itself is the the container of an
    FLV(01.swf + 01.flv), the video doesn't play. Nothing loads. But
    the funny thing is I tried to load a simple swf file and it loads
    fine. I'm guessing it has to do with the video. There's some
    drawback to loading flash videos in this manner. I've attached the
    code, and would appreciate any help. Thanks.

    check the path to your video. it should be relative to the
    _level0 swf's embedding html.

  • Flash Video Player, PHP, and XML

    I'm the visual designer for a web site "Global Oneness
    Project" (
    http://www.globalonenessproject.org/videos.php
    ) that's currently "streaming" progressive download quicktime
    movies. The individual video pages (where you view a video) is
    currently a php template that calls a MP4 from an XML file. Our
    goal is to switch the embedded quicktime videos to embedded Flash
    videos that play progressive download movies.
    Ideally I would like to create a single Flash Video player
    (SWF) thats embedded in a single php template (video.php), but will
    play different videos depending on what state of the php is being
    called. Basically, I want the site to work exactly like it does now
    but with Flash instead of Quicktime.
    I'm assuming that this will be created with some combination
    of an external "AS" file, the XML data and the PHP logic but can't
    even begin to get my mind around what needs to be done.
    I found a few examples of how to play multiple videos in a
    single player, but all of the examples use a playlist that's
    embedded in the SWF. The video player will only be used for player
    control and the user will choose the movie by selecting the correct
    PHP page within the HTML.
    I'll be thankful for any direction you all can give or even a
    Flash developer who would be able to take this project on.
    Thanks,
    Shawn

    yes, it's possible.  and there are some similarities with an xml image gallery.  the main difference would be using something like an flvplayback component to display the videos as opposed to using a target movieclip to display the large image in an image gallery.

  • Problem with Flash video/dropdowns in Mozilla

    Am trying to add a flash video to a webpage using a
    Dreamweaver extension called Active Slideshow Pro by DMXZone.
    The page can be viewed: www.faith.org.uk/Testindex.html
    In IE7 it works fine. The video shows and the dropdowns of
    the menu work correctly.
    In Mozilla Firefox the video works but the dropdowns do not
    show.
    If I remove the block of coding which is generated by the
    DMXZone extension:
    <object
    classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="
    http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=7,0,0,0"
    width="514" height="129" id="testshow" align="middle">
    <param name="FlashVars"
    value="xmlFile=testshow.xml&preloaderBackColor=0x0099FF&preloaderBorderColor=0xCCCCCC"
    />
    <param name="movie" value="slideshowpro.swf" />
    <param name="quality" value="best" />
    <param name="scale" value="noscale" />
    <param name="wmode" value="transparent" />
    <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" />
    <embed src="slideshowpro.swf" id="testshow"
    wmode="transparent" quality="best"
    flashvars="xmlFile=testshow.xml&preloaderBackColor=0x0099FF&preloaderBorderColor=0xCCCCCC "
    scale="noscale" bgcolor="#000000"
    type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="514" height="129"
    pluginspage="
    http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"
    />
    </object>
    The page works in both browsers and the menu dropdowns appear
    correctly.
    I would be most grateful for anyone's advice on this.

    A discussion with Adobe support lends the idea that MPEG
    layer 4 might be an issue. That since these videos come from DVD
    perhaps encoded with MPEG layer 4 that that could be the reason tha
    all of them have this problem. (Some were done using AVI - I have
    to check and see if that makes a difference)
    BUT
    According to the PDF from Adobe Design - Flash Video Encoder
    Wizard - By Tom Green and Jordan L. Chilcott
    Flash should be able to convert an MPEG4 file. (Well it does
    but they all stop after 30 sec.) Now how do I solve this problem?
    All the videos still stop after 30 sec.s
    quote snip snip>>
    Flash Video Encoder Wizard
    By Tom Green and Jordan L. Chilcott
    The first thing you have to understand about the use of video
    in Flash® is the original
    video must be converted to a format Flash can read. This
    format is FLV (Flash Video)
    and you can either use Flash, the Flash Video Encoder, or
    third-party software to
    create the FLV file. If you use video-editing software such
    as Adobe® After Effects®,
    you can also export the file as a FLV file. If you are a
    Dreamweaver® user, the current
    version of Dreamweaver—Dreamweaver 8—contains a
    feature that allows you to add
    an FLV at the click of a button.
    The purpose of the Encoder, therefore, is to convert the
    video file to the FLV format.
    When you installed Flash Professional 8, the Flash Video
    Encoder application was
    also installed on your machine. If you also have QuickTime,
    Adobe After Effects,
    Avid Studio, or Final Cut Pro installed on your machine,
    they, too, were given the
    capability to use the Encoder when it was installed.
    If you will be converting a video to the FLV format, the
    video must be in one of
    these formats:
    • AVI—Audio Video Interleave
    • MOV—QuickTime 4 or later
    • MPEG—Motion Picture Experts Group

  • Flash Video Cue Points don't work

    I used the template sample from Adobe named :Flash video

    that I did it all as sugested...In fact several months ago, it

    But this time, when I am testing it, the video appears in the
    screen all right but when I select a chapter for the section of

    you don't need a cuepoint to detect the end of your video.  use:
    var lo:Object = {};
    lo.complete = function(eObj:Object):Void {
    next_btn._visible=true;
    flv_pb.addEventListener("complete", lo);   // <- use the instance name of your flvpb component

  • Help inserting a flash video into my web page

    Hello!
    I'd love some help inserting a flash video into my web page. My web page is hosted by Viviti, templated, and edited online. I can add html to it, and I have the html source for my flash video. I also have uploaded the flash file to the server. Since I am very html illiterate, though, I need some help rewriting the html script so it can be published. There are two problems- firstly, no 'headers' or 'body' allowed in the script- these are already a part of the template. Secondly, I don't know how to rewrite it to refer to the uploaded files. It's also imperative that the full screen mode functions. I've pasted the source code for the flash video here. Please help!!!
    Thanks!

    What you basically need to do is copy the sections of content from the code you show into the template (assuming the template already provides the <head> and <body> sections of the page.  So in the head section of what you show, take everything starting with...
    <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">
    all the way down thru...
    </script>
    , inclusive (in the head section only), and paste that into the head section of your template.
    Similarly, take everything that lies between the <body> ... </body> tags (exclusive of the body tags) and paste it into the body section of your template wherever you plan to display the Flash file.

  • Multiple Flash Videos on 1 Page

    Hi All
    If i were to put 4 flash videos into a page, by using the
    'import flash video' function in DW CS3 - will they all load at the
    same time, or only load when the user clicks play?
    Many Thanks
    JP

    Im not sure I understand, however I have a page up with 2
    flash movies, but
    I timed them by extending the first frame on the one to not
    start any motion
    until the first one is coming to an end.
    So they both in essence start at once, but the one on top
    plays out, as it
    is coming to an end, the one in the body begins to move...

    Dont know if that helps you or not.

  • Flash Video not showing on Server

    Hi, wonder if anyone can help on this one. Going round in circles. Not sure why, should be simple enough.
    I have created a Flash Video in Flash 8 and published and picked up in Dreamweaver 8. Published files were sample.swf, sample.html and SteelExternalAll.swf (skin). Publish settings were: Format - Flash SWF and HTML; default Flash settings with local playback security set to access local files only; default HTML settings.
    In Dreamweaver, sample.html is accessed via an iframe in test.php. In Preview mode, everything is as it should be with the Video showing. The problem is, when I upload all the files to the Server, the video is not displayed including the skin. Instead, all I get is the border of the iframe with a red rectangle showing where the video should be.
    Hope someone can help. Pulling my hair out on this one and get the feeling there is a simple explanation.
    Thank you in advance.

    First get the video to play in the web page that you accessing in iframe;
    http://79.170.40.41/booksat.com/videos/elaine.html
    For testing purposes get rid of all that old, outdated Flash detection code and instead just use:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />
    <title>Elaine</title>
    </head>
    <body>
    <object data="elaine.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="400" height="345"><
      param name="movie" value="elaine.swf">
    </object>
    </body>
    </html>
    No skin but you should at least see the video... worry about the skin later....
    But you also need to make sure that you have all the files uploaded, the .swf, the skin .swf and the .flv video file and that they are pathed correctly. Keep in mind that pathing to the Flash assets need to be relative to the Web page that the .swf video player is on, NOT the physical location of the .swf or the .flv file.
    But get the video playing correctly on the elaine.html before you consider putting it in an iframe.
    For a quick review on pathing Flash:
    Pathing issues
    Almost always when it works on the local machine and not the server, it's a pathing problem.
    You can put your Flash related files in whatever folders you want, they do NOT have to be in the root, they do NOT all have to be in the same folder. But if you have a problem and if sticking them all in the root folder works, then you know that the issue was a pathing problem.
    Just remember that paths used in the .swf become relative to the Web page on which the .swf is placed, NOT it’s physical location.  So for example, if your .swf is in the flash/data folder and you use that .swf on a Web page in the root folder, you are in effect, removing that .swf from flash/data and putting it in root. So if the .swf is loading any related files (xml, images, video, etc), the path used inside the .swf to load the .xml file has to be relative to it's new location in root and then back down into flash/data. This is true even though when testing the .swf by itself, it can be inside flash/data and work just fine, since relative to it's location, the path is just fine, they are in the same folder. But if that same path is used when the .swf is placed on a page two folder levels up, the relative path has changed, the old "same folder" path will not work.
    In fact if you are placing the .swf on a web page in a different folder than the .swf is stored in, and that .swf calls external assets, then direct clicking and opening of the .swf in it’s folder should NOT work! That’s because the paths to the external assets should be relative to the Web page and not the physical location of the .swf.
    So just be sure that you use addresses relative to the final Web page locations (not physical file locations) and you can put the Flash related files in what ever folders you want.

  • Spry with Flash Video

    Is spry compatible with flash video?
    I used the Dreamweaver wizard to insert a flash video. I
    inserted it into a spry region and changed the source of the flash
    video to be:
    src="{link}"
    however, this does not work. I have tried several other
    javascript applications for embedding flash video files, but they
    do not work either.
    Is there a way to build a flv/ajax application?
    Thanks,
    Eric

    I may have found a resolution to your problem. I was having a
    similar problem where instead of the video displaying I would see
    the embedded source code appear. I found that I needed to declare
    the column type for my XML document and once I did the video
    appears correctly. Below is the code I used;
    var myvids = new Spry.Data.XMLDataSet("myvideos.xml",
    "videos/video",{sortOnLoad:"project",sortOrderOnLoad:"ascending"});
    myvids.setColumnType("flashlink", "html");

  • Flash Video Gallery

  • Flash-Video with authentication

    I want to play flash videos from a University that require authentication on my iPad.
    But there seems no possibility because the usual flash player are not capable to do so.

    Hi Geoff,
    If you are using Spry 1.4 you can see this sample page which
    shows folks how to deal with HTML embedded in XML files:
    http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/samples/data_region/HTMLFragsInXMLSample.html
    If you are living on the edge and trying out the Spry
    Pre-Release 1.5 Preview:
    http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/preview/
    We added a new column type "html" which basically tells Spry
    to automatically entity decode your description text before
    inserting so you get what you want ... this means you don't have to
    set up an onPostLoad handler as mentioned in the sample above. It
    basically looks like this:
    var ds_video = new Spry.Data.XMLDataSet("myfoo.xml",
    "/my/xpath/node");
    ds_video.setColumnType("description", "html"); // This
    requires Spry Pre-Release 1.5 Preview
    If you want to try out the 1.5 Preview, just go to the URL
    above and download the SpryData.js.

  • Flash Video with option to switch subtitles live?

    I have a FLash Video (.FLV) and I need to be able to add the option for viewers to switch Subtitle languages on the fly if need be.
    Is it possible to use xml files or txt files with the text, and give the control to switch the text during playback?
    Cheers

    What I would do:
    Set up the subtitles to work off of an XML file.
    Then, add a button to toggle their display, and then, on click, set a boolean value that tells the SWF whether or not the subtitles should be displayed.
    (This code is AS3, so would need converted if using AS2 - also, this code is just to give the gist of the technique, not be refined code that can be copy/pasted)
    var dispSubs:Boolean = false;
    function displaySubtitle():void {
         if(dispSubs){
              //code to display subtitles
    dispSubsBtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,switchBool);
    function switchBool(e:MouseEvent):void {
         dispSubs = !dispSubs;

  • Flash video with captions

    I'm inexperienced with Flash. A client has insisted on a captioned flash video file and we're trying to figure that out using CS5. I've followed the steps outlined in the Adobe help (I think), but when I test the movie, I get no captions. I see an error in the output tab under the stage:
    TypeError: Error #1090: XML parser failure: element is malformed.
    at fl.video::TimedTextManager/
    http://www.adobe.com/2007/flash/flvplayback/internal::xmlLoadEventHandler()
    at flash.events::EventDispatcher/dispatchEventFunction()
    at flash.events::EventDispatcher/dispatchEvent()
    at flash.net::URLLoader/onComplete()
    I have no idea what this means. Here's what I've done: I dragged the FLV Playback component to the stage. I selected a skin that includes a caption button. I associated an existing flv video with it as its source. Than I dragged the FLVPlaybackCaptioning component to the stage. I set the flvPlaybackName to "flvplayback" which is what I named my FLVPlayback component. I set its source to "captions.xml" which resides in the same folder as the project. This captions file is actually Adobe's sample timedtext caption file that I'm using for testing. The first caption starts at 00:00 so I thought it should work with my video.
    If anyone has a surefire method for making captions work with a flash video file, please let me know!
    Thanks!

    Thanks for getting me on the right track, I have posted a request about "what is the best solution for synced caption" here but got no responce.
    I'm new to flash too, I only wanted to do a synced text and sound try, since I already had done it vbscript and javascript I wanted to try flash too.
    Look through your XML because XML is strictly, check that you doesn't have use "enter" in your text too.
    What I did was to write a simple loader and used timer to sync the text.
    I see now that I could have saved me some time, but done is done.
    You can look at the script I wrote here
    http://www.cicyzone.com/Lyrictest/Samples/FlashCaption.htm
    The Xml file that I used:
    http://www.cicyzone.com/Lyrictest/Xmlstream.aspx?ID=51998&T=Running+Up+That+Hill
    Now that flash have a component for captions was it more easy to find samples too.
    I looked at this but it is for CS3
    http://www.digital-web.com/articles/captions_flash_video/
    Thanks again, and I hope that some one here will help you.

  • Adding subtitles to Flash video

    How i can add Subtitles to the Flash Video Player
    I am using my own Flash player , so Caption Component is not working
    but i dont want to use embeded subtiles or captions
    I am loading External video, and i Want to load subtitles as well
    subtiles will be in timed text xml file
    so i can connect my video to the subtitles ?
    and I am not using FLVPLAYBACK component

    open the xml file and look at it.  it should be obvious how it corresponds with the video.
    then read the flash help files about working with cue points.  read the section(s) that relate to your actionscript version and which class (netstream, flvplayback component) you're using to play your flv.
