Flashlight mask with radial blur question

I have a circle mask over a photo. I'm trying to get it so the edges fade out to black. Currently, it just is a solid white circle. It's a movie clip and has a radial blur and is motion tweened. The alpha channel on the radial blur is 100% on the first point and 0% on the last. Can a spotlight with radial blur/fade be done without adding code or actionscript?
I've attached a photo of what I have now along with what the movieclip I'm using.
Thanks in advance for any help!
I'm on CS5, but can only use AS2, if actionscript is necessary.

Create the circle with a radial fill (any color) and have the inner fill 100% alpha and the outer fill 0% alpha.  Convert that to a movieclip, give it an instance name (say you use "msk").
Convert the photo to a movieclip and give it an instance name (say you use "mc").
Place the following code in the timeline...
mc.cacheAsBitmap = true;
msk.cacheAsBitmap = true;
mc.setMask(msk);

  • Radial Blur Smart Filters Change when I drag in a new layer - whats going on?

I've got a pretty heavy document; an architectural CG composite type image, Renders, Passes, Masks and People. The people are smart objects.
I've got a couple of radial blur smart filters running on these object, to blend them in, everything is looking ok.
So I open up a new file of a person I'd like to drop in, and when I do - the smart filters rearrange (even though the new layer I'm dropping in inst smart yet) and is no way near the smart objects in my layer stack.
I cant quite work out whats happening, and why its happening. Frustrating, as I have say, a 99% fine image, I just want to add someone else - and then suddenly the radial blurs have shifted direction.
Can anyone explain? I'm currently rasterizing as a workaround, though this negates the whole point really, many thanks

Just to be clear, we here are users like you.  We're not employees of RIM nor can we make any decisions to exchange your handset.  What we CAN do is offer solutions to make your phone run as you want it to run.
That being said, the Torch 9860 is a fine phone, in fact it's the best phone I've ever owned (and I've owned a few from many different manufacturers).  Plain and simple, you got a lemon.  Then another one.  And perhaps a third one.  What are the odds?  I know of other people who own this model and they are quite happy with it.
All I can say is to have a look at your phone and see what is not right about it.  Write us back with specific details, such as what happens when you see an error message, what you were doing right before an app doesn't work, what apps you  have running, etc.

I've only been using Premiere for a single project as my university specified we should use it, I'm not used to such a complex programme, or even video editing to be honest, so bear with me. (I'm following that guide on what information to add to questions on this forum)

I'm not actually sure what a codec is but my source material is just one .jpg image, I put effects on it in one project then imported it to another project though

  • How do I select an image with motion blur so that I can put it onto a different background ?

How do I overlay a image with motion blur on a white background (like the first image) onto a different background (to look like the second image)? any help would be greatly appreciated, many thanks ,ed

I’m afraid you may have bitten off more than you might want to chew.
The resulting pixels of an in-camera-blur combine information about the color/brightness of back- and foreground (edit: the result of surface properties and lighting conditions) with motion (basically transparency for this task) in such a way that it seems exceedingly difficult (maybe even improssible) to isolate the foreground in a »pure« form.
One may get a halfway decent mask (as the backgound is at least almost uniform and brighter than the foreground elements) but you may have to manually decontaminate the transparent areas, otherwise the masked object in front of a dark background would have a bright edge.

  • Issue with Gaussian Blur and Spot Colors

Wondering if anyone has a solution to this issue.
Setup: We are using CS4 + CS5 Illustrator on Mac OS 10.5.X and 10.6.X
We created a spot color radial gradient filled circle over a background of the same spot color. The gradient went from 100% of the color down to 2%. We then applied a gaussian blur set to 50 pixels so that we had a nice smooth transition from the circle blurring outwards over the background with the blur blending into the spot color background.
The problem arises when we select "Retain Spot Colors" on the blur. It fills the gradient circle with 100% solid color (but at the 2% range of the gradient so it appears white) and deletes the blur effect. If we don't select "Retain Spot Colors", it converts the blur to process and we get a banding on our printouts where the spot background and CMYK gaussian meet.
We tried the gaussian blur set at 5 pixels all the way up to 55 in 10 pixel increments but nothing worked. We tried different spot colors, same issue. We know we can do the background in Photoshop and import it into Illustrator as a workaround, but we are constantly editing and changing files and would like to keep everything in Illustrator.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this or if there is even a solution. We have not tried Illustrator 5.5 and do not want to invest the money in the upgrade yet. We would prefer to stay with both CS4 and CS5.
    Thank you for any input.

    Hi Mike,
Okay, I have some new information that changes things. I misunderstood what the issue was from the designer. My apologies in advance for the confusion. There are actually two issues but they are somewhat related.
    Issue 1:
We are concerned with banding on the outside of a spot color gradient with a gaussian blur over a patterned background of the same spot color.  We do not  know if this is becasue of the number of pixels on the blur, the version of Illustrator, the blending of the blur into the patterned background, etc... While the banding looks slight on screen it is more pronounced when printed. There are many variables and we have tried everything we can think of to create a smooth transition but we keep getting some banding.
The first image shows what happens when the Preserve Spot Colors in the Raster Effects Settings (found under the Effect menu) is unchecked. We believe that the spot color is being treated as CMYK and causing the blur to be a slightly different color than the spot color background thus causing the banding.
The second image shows what happens when we select Preserve Spot Colors. We lose the blur.
The third image is what we are trying to achieve over a over a patterned background of the same spot color. This was achieved with the Preserve Spot Colors unchecked and also unchecking Overprint Preview in the Separations Preview Palette. However, this brings us right back to the issue with the Preserve Spot Color being unchecked.
    Issue 2:
The issue is that we want to print a spot color gradient with a gaussian blur (over 50 pixels). In order to preview the blur effect correctly we have to uncheck the Preserve Spot Colors in the Raster Effects Settings (found under the Effect menu). However, we have recently found out that this will not work with the software our printers use to do separations. If we check the Preserve Spot Color for the separator, it turns the blur into a large square of color (see screensnap below). We have played around with the Add: x Around Object setting in Raster Effects but it has not helped.
    3. If we do not select "Preserve Spot Color", the blur looks correct but it is no longer a spot color but CMYK when separated.
I hope that isn't too confusing and makes sense. Again, apologies for the mixup on my part originally. Thanks again for any help.

  • Radial Blur on Smart object

This is an issue I have encountered in CS6 & CC since I've been using a slightly different workflow on a few projects.
I create a smart object, say a coposite of a landscape with a road in it. I add a Radial Blur (zoom) to and move the origina point, file looks great and is adjustable as a smart filter.
Problem occures, if I use Radial Blur (zoom) on another image and change the settings and vanishing point. - When I return back to the image with the blur as a smart filter, the zoom origin point has reverted back to be centred.
If anyone has a workaround for this, please let me know.
On the subject of Radial Blur (zoom) a feature I would like is to be able to set the origin point of the zoom to be outside the canvas area.

Sorry. No answer for you, but I certainly sympathise.  The inability to preview the focal point for radial Blur > Zoom is one of the great Photoshop mysteries IMO.  Maybe the team thought that the introduction of Smart Objects in CS2 was the answer, but it still annoys me that I have to resort to trial and error.  Something else that I can’t work out, is why the Alt (Opt) key while in the Zoom Blur panel, changes Cancel to reset, as with other panels, but clicking on Rest only takes the focus back the position it was in when the panel was opened.  This seems pointless to me as you have no idea of the effect of any move without committing it — at which point that position becomes the new default.
Is there a way to preview the focus point?  If not, can we add that to the wish list?

  • Soft Mask with Type 1 (Function-based) Shading

I want to use a custom function as the soft mask - Type 1 (Function-based) Shading
But a function, does not generate alpha to be used with SMask, so my questions are
Is there a way to make a Type 1 (Function-based) Shading to return alpha?
Is there a way to transfer R, G or B layer into alfa?
If not, sould I use Soft mask with Luminosity?
Any examples somewhere of using functions as soft masks (with alpha or luminosity types)?
      Thank you!

You should be able to do that just fine by using a standard alpha-based soft mask.   Use a DeviceGray-based shading and you should be fine.

  • My CS5 doen't have radial blur. How do i get it?

I have a new mac and downloaded CS5 and there is no Radial blur. Someone help me. i need that option.

Chris has it right in post #1.  Clearly you're missing a LOT of filters normally supplied with Photoshop.
Did you fool around in the installation area?  Maybe remove or move files from a folder called Plug-ins?
In any case, removing and reinstalling Photoshop to restore the missing files will likely be what's needed to fix that.

You need to use the computer's install disks to repair the hard drive or install a new OS.

My MBP (mid 09) is showing a folder with a flashing question mark. I tried the usual things like PRAM Reset and booting with a external drive. I also changed the hard drive and could use it as a external drive on an other Mac - so this seems to work. Another drive could not be used too. The Apple Hardware Test does not work - my Superdrive is broken. Any ideas?

  • Creating a symbol from shape with gaussian blur = problem

I am trying to create artwork to map to a globe using the 3D revolve effect...the problem is the shape/layer I'm using to create the "glow" effect (compound path filled with white and a gaussian blur applied):
When I create a symbol out of this, here is the problem (note the "excess" areas on the top and right):
...resulting in this messed up globe...
Doing an outer glow effect instead of gaussian blur results in the same thing (its definitely the blur causing this, deleting the shape fixes the problem).  Expanding the shape with the blur results in an image the same size as the bounding box in image 2 above. Any ideas how to address this?
    thx

Yep, that did it! (something strange going on now with the longitude/latitude lines going thru India, but I'll work on that later)...Thank you!

Click here and follow the instructions. If the computer originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, when you reach step 5, insert its original disk, restart with the C key held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the internal drive, and install a fresh OS.

  • Upgraded to ios6 on my iphone 3gs and email is not displaying images. It has a blue box with a blue question mark inside

I just upgraded to ios 6 on my iphone 3gs and I noticed on a couple of incoming emails that the images and information are not being displayed. There is a blue square box with a blue question mark inside. I already tried to press the home key and power key to restart. The email still does not display correctly. I went on my laptop to retrieve that same email and I was able to see the graphics and information, so the problem is on the iphone. I received two emails like this, so I'm missing all the important information. I also tried to retrieve my email through the internet browser and I still have the same problem. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I forgot to mention that I have an Ipad 2 also and I can view the email information on there also. I received an email from Party city and it said to click here to print out the coupon. So I click the coupon and there is the little blue box with the question mark. This is the first time I've seen this happen, as I have printed out the coupons before. Maybe it has to do with the IOS6 update, because this just started to happen right after the update.

Which version of the OS is installed, and which version are you trying to install?
You could try starting up with Startup Manager and see if it will allow you to select the OS X install disc as the startup disk. If so, maybe you can proceed from there. I would recommend repairing the hard drive first since you are evidently having a bit of a problem with it.
